To Slow Aging: Moisturize with Shea, Cocoa and Mango Butter

Yesterday we shared a shocking new report that found that wrinkles aren’t just skin damage. They are a build up of sick and broken cells which cause toxic inflammation, which then spills into other parts of the body, damaging them too. (“Inflammaging” is the medical term.) So wrinkles themselves contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dementia! 🤯

Luckily experts recommend two simple solutions:

1. Stay out of the sun!  80% of visible skin damage comes from the sun. When you do go out, cover up! Wear protective clothing, sunglasses, a wide hat. 👒 And your sunscreen should have ratings for UV-B (SPF) *and* UV-A (look for UV-PF or PPD).

2. Moisturize!  It is — by far — the easiest way to keep your skin healthy. In fact, researchers studied groups of people who did and did not moisturize, and the people who moisturized had significantly better overall health!

After age 40(~ish), the moisture levels in our skin drop like a rock! And, as we covered in part one, when our skin falters, so does everything else!

Replenishing those moisture levels keeps our skin healthy, aiding the body’s natural ability to heal itself and push back against a dreaded cycle of inflammation and decline.

“In one study, an international team of researchers asked older volunteers to apply a topical moisturiser twice a day for one month. Compared to older participants who had not received any treatment, the subjects’ skin was significantly restored, with lower levels of three different classes of inflammatory chemicals.

These promising results were quickly followed up with another study by the same team, which involved treating adults over 65 years old with a moisturising cream twice a day for three years. The participants’ cognitive functioning was measured at the beginning and end of the study – and after three years, though the control group had declined significantly, those who had been hydrating their skin had not deteriorated.”
