3 Secrets to Soft Skin

There is nothing more beautiful than supple, healthy skin. And while some believe soft skin is only a byproduct of youth, that is absolutely not true! These simple, healthy and relaxing beauty fixes will soften your skin over time.

1. Consistent Exfoliation
I have always known that exfoliation — removing the top layer of dead skin cells — was important, but only recently started putting it into regular practice. Many dermatologists agree that daily exfoliation isn’t necessary as it can irritate the skin. And if you have skin conditions such as warts or inflammatory acne you should consult with a dermatologist to determine a proper exfoliation regimen. But once you find a rhythm that works for you, the benefits are incredible. From The American Academy of Dermatology;

results are immediate after an exfoliation treatment, as the removal of dead cells leaves the skin looking brighter. Exfoliation also can improve the effectiveness of topical skin treatments, which can penetrate deeper once the topmost layer of skin is removed. Long-term benefits of exfoliation can include increased collagen production, resulting in younger-looking skin.

I recently purchased an exfoliation glove on Amazon that I use twice a week. It works wonders! (You can find it here.)

2. Steam and/or Sauna

I’ve written before about how I’ve developed a mild obsession with the sauna (read about it here.) Again, you don’t need to be heavy handed. About 15 minutes at a time is enough to have your skin glowing and feeling soft. But how does it work? From SELF Magazine;

“Both steam rooms and saunas make you sweat, which can help unclog your pores and give your skin a flushed, glow-y look, thanks to the increase in blood flow that heat causes… Saunas use dry heat, which makes your pores release more sweat, while steam rooms have more moisture in the air, which can help plump up your skin. Steam rooms can also help acne-prone skin by balancing oil production…

3. Applying Shea, Cocoa and/or Mango Butter
You know I couldn’t write a post without mentioning these, right? Shea, cocoa and mango butter are among nature’s most powerful skin regenerators. A 2014 study in the American Journal of Life Sciences found that shea butter boosts collagen production and elastin which are “the major structural proteins providing skin with toughness and plumpness.”
