Actress Sanaa Lathan took to her Facebook page Friday morning to post a selfie of her straightened natural hair with the caption:
Hair weave killa. Ha! Au naturel. TGIF.

Love it!

After I went natural, I hated it when other naturals blow dried and straightened their beautiful curls. Now that I’ve been relaxer free for close to 3 year, I know that straightening it temporarily is just another way to wear it. I don’t do it often because I prefer the curls and heat isn’t healthy for it, but far be it for me to criticize someone else for what they want to do with their own locks. Sanaa is beautiful and I don’t believe for one minute that she hates herself. Hair is a big part of who we are as black people, but it’s not the biggest!
Sanaa looks nice and if memory serves me correct, most black women hair looks similar to this before you put the flat irons or curling irons working. Better yet, even white women have hair that is busy or big. Whats the problem? Its sexy looking if you ask me.
I do not know about a hair grading (numeric-alpha) system, care less about relaxed vs natural, but healthy hair is paramount! Weave killa is right, because I see dry, unhealthy looking hair, but perhaps it’s my screen. The article asked what we thought, and I expressed my view.
She looks nice…always does!
Some of these comments are just crazy! Natural Hair thumpers be taking it too far. Just because someone alters they hair doesn’t always mean they hate themselves. Everybody has the right to their own religion in America whether Christian or atheist. If god do exist than he put the person on this earth that invented the hot comb, hair color and relaxer. Far as natural not everybody has kinky 4c hair some black people range between type 3A-3C some 4AB and than you got people like my cousins who have naturally straight or wavy hair and is mostly black. You got Africans who have natural blond hair. I had a school mate who was Dominican and French, brown skin color type 3A natural hair and natural blond hair that grew out her roots, use to dye her hair black all the time just to fit in before embracing her unique hair. Its nothing wrong with wearing weaves, coloring or relaxing it just long as you love yourself and not trying to blend in with others or satisfy someone else. Before the natural hair community comes after me let me just say I have virgin natural jet black 4c hair as you can see in the picture below so please refrain from any negative comments such as weaver wearer or self loather.

Sweethearts!!!! Please… Let’s NOT perpetuate the myth that WE self-loathe as I do not. The subject matter is Sanaa’s hair… And, hers is just as gorgeous as ours. Love who YOU are and what YOU have, and appreciate others for their variety and the richness they bring to the “natural hair” family. Be well. Peace & Light
Well, it seems the “natural hair movement” has created another kind of monster and another excuse for black women to bash one another. Just brilliant. Keep at it, ladies, but stop blaming the white man or any other man for your troubles. This thread right here sums it all up. Now thumbs down that!
Here we go with the HAIR POLICE. Judging others who relax, color, braid, weave their hair. I’m natural but according to the HAIR POLICE, I’m not because I like to color, braid, weave and sometimes straighten my hair. It’s not up to you to judge me. I feel that if you don’t us the creamy crack then your’re natural. And if you choose to relax your hair. Then that’s your choice. Do what makes you happy.
There are so many more important issues in life. You can’t not judge a person’s inward belief system solely based on hair choices. If we as naturals are supposed to be so “pro-black” why are so many people (not all) so hateful in their responses. Another thing is that unless you’ve touched Sanaa’s hair or are employed with the job of caring for it you have no idea what’s going on with it. It’s just a picture one aspect of the primary signal system. It’s unfair to say that her hair is damaged it may appear to your eyes to be damaged but unless you are expert you just don’t know. Also as far as all the nasty disparaging comments by some of us naturals I can only wonder how evil and nasty you were when you had relaxers in your hair. Being natural should be about self love when you are filled with love you don’t have hatred in you to constantly spew out. Some people have been natural for for 4 years, some for 20, some all their lives, some will go natural in the future it doesn’t make one person better than the other person. Especially when you choose to be so rude to another fellow human being.
Wow. The comments on here make me wonder whether I still want to frequent BGLH. I’m relaxed, on a healthy hair journey and generally appreciate the tips and advice that I get here and on numerous other blogs and forums. What I don’t appreciate are that there are women who comment that “It is okay, in my opinion, to judge women who continue to weave and relax all the time”. Like another lady said, natural hair takes a lot of work and personally I do not have time for that at this juncture of my life, which I continue to touch up, or install braids. The fact that you think it’s okay to judge me for a PERSONAL choice I made regarding MY hair and MY lifestyle speaks way more to YOUR issues than mine. In my opinion, you, Miss Joe Joe, you are a natural nazi who doesn’t have respect for those who are different from you and wish to push your beliefs down our throats, thus I shall use the term nazi freely with you. You need to get over yourself and let people live their damn lives. Good for you that you NEVER got a relaxer or a perm or a straightener, whatever you wanna bloody well call it. But get off your damned high horse, look after your own self (and by the way, how natural are you really? Because if you have had a single nip or tuck, get out of my face!) and leave the rest of the world in peace!
Best post eva!!!!
Bottom line? The natural hair journey is just another way from some women and men to make themselves feel better about themselves by denigrate others for their personal choices. My advice? Read the articles and take the comments with an enormous grain of salt.
i think her hair looks fine. y’all are being a lil harsh- not all but some. to me it looks like she blew her hair out and just hung her hair over her head for a picture. in such a case, it’s going to look wild/frizzy/dry and i think that’s the point. her hair doesn’t look unhealthy/damaged- it’s clear that she didnt’ slather a buncha product on it like a lot of you all do in the name of moisturized hair. clearly her hair is cared for. she has a lot of it, and i don’t see any signs of dead ends. her hair’s just not combed into place, and i think that’s where a lot of you guys seem to be getting tripped up. my hair would look the exact same way if i blow dried it.
Beautiful pic; Sanaa is a naturally pretty woman.
With that being said, it’s sad that a picture can’t be shown without it being dissected down to whether someone has single strand knots or needs a trim. This site states they celebrate women who choose to wear their hair naturally — with minimal or no use of chemicals, heat, weave or extensions. This pic definitely qualifies.
BGLH please continue to celebrate and share great pics such as this one.
LADIES, PLEASE. THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. CONSTANTLY PUTTING EACH OTHER DOWN, AND FOR WHAT. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT IS ONLY HAIR, THAT MAY FALL OUT ONE DAY. THERE ARE WAY MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES. DO YOU THINK WOMEN FIGHTING CANCER GIVE A DAMN ABOUT NATURAL OR CHEMICALLY ALTERED HAIR? NEXT TIME YOU SEE A WOMAN WITH NO HAIR OR PATCHES ON HER HEAD FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE, ASK HER WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT, HER HEALTH OR HER GOTDAMN HAIR.
Well whether its permed or blown out she’s got hair. And alot of it.
OMG!!! We as black women are our own worst enemy. What is wrong with her hair in this photo? Her hair looks NO different then any of ours on any given Saturday at the beauty shop, your home, in your friends kitchens, WTH?!?!?!? “It looks dry”,”natural according to who?” “It looks unhealthy”. ARE YOU SERIOUS? I’m all natural have been for 10yrs. I were it curly, but when I do have it ironed out it looks just like that but bigger, but once that iron starts to work it’s magic (without oil) My HAIR IS FABULOUS! Shiny, bouncy, not a split end in sight and without all the harsh chemicals and alcohol that are used to make it shine, just my natural oils. The same probably goes for her. We as black people don’t ever have to worry about otherraces spewing hate and negativity at us, we do a damn good job of doing it ourselves. Black women, WE NEED TO DO BETTER!
Love your response. All of a sudden women forget what their hair looks like before they style it. And in this case, we don’t know what she was about to do with her hair. Just a random pic that a lot people take of themselves and post on social media.
More support and less negativity.
Natural to HER may be synonymous with real. What I don’t understand is the natural hair police condemning every natural who wears a weave as self-loathing insecure beings. I have natural hair that falls to my shoulder blades…and I wear weave! I have no desire to straighten my hair but like the look of straight hair. So weave it is. Does that mean I like myself any less? Chile boo. I’m fabulous with weave, without weave, blown out or kinked and matted to the point that a hairstylist is like ‘extra for you’. What’s on my head does not define me, and I refuse to let someone else paint me with their own paintbrush of insecurity.
BLAH!!!!!
It looks pretty dry, but she’s really beautuful. I love her features. She doesn’look “ratchet” as some ignorant poster said. She can use a good conditioner for her hair and it’ll look good.
I think sometimes relaxers look great on some women. Not all black women of African origin have the kinkiest hair. I know a few with easy to straighten hair.
I noticed the easier the curl is to straighten, the more natural it looks, for example Oprah Winfrey. If you have tough to straighten hair it tends to look less natural, for example Tishina Arnold from the show Martin.
So it depends on how easy it is to straighten. I had a home girl who straightened her long hair and it looked gorgeous! Her hair was easy to straighten. Some people look like they’re wearing a wig when they straighren their hair, it looks like a helmet doesn’t move. Lol
Whew! some of yall can be so judgmental & particular about this natural hair. She’s a groooown woman, she can do WHATEVER she wants ( in my best beyoncé voice!
it may very well be her “natural” hair but man it looks totally unhealthy , i like sanaa she never fell into that Hollywood stereotype so it pains me to say that hair looks ratchet.
Hi
Why are you using the word “ratchet” in this manner? Mimicking or something else? TIA
I used the word ratchet because it means it does not look good,i think sanaa implied it herself when she says”hair weave killa” hey I don’t know where your from but rachet is a fairly popular term which could either mean bad or good, depending on context.now your turn what do you mean by mimicking or tia?
She always looks good. She’s one of those women that rolls out of bed beauitiful. She seriously can make rachet look vogue and chic. Yes it’s dry, but I think it still looks great unconditioned She kinda looks like she’s doing a role here! Yeah it’s real but beautiful… I think it would be exciting to be an Actress! It looks like she was walking on a beach and is tired from the heat, tired, sexy, exhausted, possibly wounded…but oh where is her Knight ready to swoop her up in his arms while she is tired near death? CUUUUT!!!!! I love the whole process of acting! I bet this pic is for a movie or something?
Yeah I get it lol it look full like a weave. But ppl confuse natural. Natural is your own hair is the hair on your head looks no relaxer. Nothing that don’t permanently change your hair texture. I get that nobody ain’t satisfied with the hair god gave them because that would mean no brushing, combing or styling your hair. You can’t touch or manipulate your hair includes no washing which is nasty… But that is real natural hair. Do not style your hair.
what the heck are you talking about? i understood everything she said, unless your comment wasn’t really directed at deedee. also, pls don’t start this foolishness about grammar/sp errors. first, it’s the internet, and in case ya didn’t know- allow me to enlighten you- it’s global. so criticizing someone’s grammar can be an insult to someone who might not even speak english as a first language but yet takes enough initiative and has enough courage to want to try to communicate in a foreign tongue.
second, even within english speaking cultures not everyone operates by the same grammar rules. provided the person’s phrasing be intelligible, that really is all that truly counts, from a linguistic perspective. did you understand her? ok. then don’t worry about how it is delivered, because at the end of the day, her point was not lost.
three, it’s useless to jump down people’s proverbial throats over sp/grammar considering that most people use shorthand intentionally on the ‘net. either that, or even if they aren’t intentionally misspelling things or using what reads as incorrect grammar, don’t assume that we’re all typing on properly functioning keyboard, double-checking and cross-checking what we write, before sending our posts/messages, what have you. some people might be speedy but inaccurate typers. others may type from touch pads or might use keys too tiny to suitably accommodate much text from a perspective of personal comfort, some people might be using just-barely working keyboards, etc.
so don’t assume, and don’t be rude, k, Boo Boo?
well did you ever consider that your nitpicking probably is not doing a “good deed” either? and if you intended that by it, then i hate to have to tell you this, but- no dice.
i’m not “passionate about people who communicate using ebonics”; what i am passionate about, however, is people who bash others for grammar, particularly when it serves absolutely no purpose. except just to make you feel good about yourself, momentarily. save the criticisms of language usage for a thesis, a scholarly article in a journal, or a paper for your master’s program or undergrad program or maybe the writing portion of the SAT. whatever you prefer, but don’t put others down for not prioritizing use of standard english grammar as *you* see fit.
if you want to harp about grammar, then i’ll put it to you in due kind. the reason it’s pointless, ultimately, is because everyone makes mistakes when they type on the internet. no one is infallible, and as an example i could just as easily point out your misuse of grammar as well:
it’s *WHOSE first language is not English* rather than *who’s* (contraction for ‘who is’, if you didn’t know. the correction shows ownership. i’d be doing the public a disservice if i didn’t point that one out, as people, like yourself, abuse this one ALL the time, by the way). and there’s no need for the comma after “one thing i gathered”.
also, there should be a comma after ‘either’ in your sentence ‘my first language is not English either babe’.
and technically there should be one after ‘sorry’ in the following sentence.
the list goes on, and i’m sure you could school me for some misuse of grammar in what i’ve typed as well, but the point, in case it was lost in the sarcasm, is that if you call yourself “schooling someone on grammar”, there’s always someone else that will come around for the sole purpose of schooling in return. it’s a waste of energy, and if you’d love to spend your limited 24 hours doing so, then happily be my guest. frolic in the futility of your pastime to your heart’s content. and yes, another long paragraph (or rubbish, if you prefer) or two or three or however many for you to dissect or not, if it encourages you to leave well enough (bottom line comprehension, in other words) alone.
Again, I can’t believe you write so much? I truly got your point, I promise! Yes younwin and Imsee your point. Who was nitpicking though? Only an English teacher can complain!
I do see some errors with your writings but I think you write well enough. You’re communicating well enough for me and that is hardly nitpicking. I secretly enjoyed reading some of these experiences here from women. I see nothing wrong with imperfect grammar.
Certain things frustrate me. I only have a problem with people who write or communicate in a strange way. It’s not so much about commas and periods for me. There is more to me than commas and periods. I tend to come off rude, when I really don’t mean to be. I’m not about everyone speaking the Queens English deary.
She has a lot of hair that’s or sure. I was trying to understand “hair weave killa” I understand it as “hair weave killer”. Just don’t understand what she is trying o say. Lol. Anyway, I do feel that while I may be healthy, it does not look healthy to Me. About 3 or more inches need to be cut off. The ends look dead. Oh! Maybe that’s what she mean the toll of wearing weaves so much is a killa. If so, I agree.
I personally think the picture is gorgeous. Since when is it wrong for a woman to do what she wants to HER hair. I’m natural, but I am not the type of natural that says everybody and their mama is wrong for not wanting to be natural. Natural hair is a TON of work, and some people prefer to perm that hair. That doesn’t mean that they’re insecure or conforming to the “European standards of beauty’, it simply means, they want to perm their hair or wear weaves. I still wear weaves. So effing what! Who are we to judge anybody? Besides, at the end of the day, it’s still HER hair and she’s free to do what the heck she wants to HER hair!!!!
LOOKS LIKE A BLOW OUT ON RELAXED HAIR. CAN YOU GUYS START VERIFYING THIS INFO BEFORE YOU POST IT
In all honesty (and in my opinion) it looks horrible. Not natural.
I hate coming on here because of the defensive comments. One person stated that there are many ways to define natural, uh no. Natural hair is hair that is untreated that is your own. N-a-t-u-r-a-l! Look it up. As for the person who said that we all have forgotten what a perm is like, well I have NEVER in my life put that craziness in my hair. Yes, I am judging. Black women need to stop perpetuating our hair insecurities. It is okay, in my opinion, to judge women who continue to weave and relax all the time; women who are ashamed to rock their kinky nappy hair. Some say they believe in God or Jesus and yet do not appreciate our natural (hair) blessing. Geez, I am so annoyed. Kudos to the sisters who blasted her unnatural, damage hair. Sanaa is beautiful, indeed, but when talking hair, she needs to go back to her roots – literally.
Saana’s hair is beautiful the way it is,she doesnt need to go back to her roots because hair is hair, natural hair is not better then relaxed and relaxed hair is not better then natural
hair is hair..as long as she has hair on her head and its healthy..that is what matters.
Lets be real, anything that god created will always look better than what man made. So you are incorrect about relaxed hair being equal with natural hair,
Exactly!
But relaxed hair is not man made, the relaxer chemical is..relaxed hair has just been altered, it’s still hair and hair that came from God.
so foolish… its possible to be pro natural without being anti everything else. there are plenty of things that have been altered by man not related to hair that humans would not be able to live without….
It’s shameful the way women choose to tear each other down. You hateful heffas make me want to scream. Nothing is natural enough, you’re making up the rules as you go. Mind your own hair business– health business. I understand BGLH asked what you thought about Sanaa’s natural hair, but I still think the rules of ” if you don’t have something nice to say…” Apply here. Stop hiding behind your online identity. If those of you that know the “real rules of being really natural” are so perfect, then please post pics if your perfect heads of hair, bodies, and faces, so we can rip you physical attributes apart. These celebrities are actually people (gasp!) with feelings and insecurities, just like us.
@Colalover – (in size 500 font) – YOU ARE MEAN. Every post you make sounds like you could reach through the screen at any moment and slash someone’s throat and then laugh about it. Praying, to the God in whom don’t believe, for you. Hate is killing you and you don’t realize it.
Wow, here you are again spitting your atheist bile!!! Get a damn life!!!
@ Maxine
Any hair growing straight from your head that is unaltered in every way( color, texture) will always be 100% better than hair that was put through a chemical process.
True, but we have to stop putting boxes on whats better
The bible doesn’t tell you that natural hair is better it is by our own preferences as human that this color is better and this hair type as better..people alter their self image in many ways
So I guess those who criticize women who wear weaves/straighten their hair do not wear makeup, wear bras, or do anything that alters your appearance because you embrace all that is natural on you, right? If so, then more power to you. Otherwise, I do not see how you have room to criticize people who wear weaves/straighten their hair. I primarily wear my hair natural, but I do straighten my hair on occasion- not because I have self-esteem issues, but simply because I want to. I really do not get why some people invest so much time criticizing other people’s lives (as long as they are not hurting others). The energy and time people spend criticizing others could be used to improve some aspect of their lives or the lives of others. Everyone has room for improvement.
Colalover,
You are a bitch and a bully. Please get a life and quit trying to make everyone’s day as horrible as your personal life MUST BE.
I’m sorry but are you out of your mind? What does Sanaa’s hair have to do with religion? Drop it. Leave.
You sound just as negative as the people you are speaking of.
I second that! 🙂
Well said ! I agree 100%!
So why do you presume we all have the same kinky hair? Some of us don’t have curls in our hair, and therefore choose to style our hair in a way that is most pleasing to us. Sanaa Lathan’s hair is natural because it is not treated by chemical agents that straighten the hair. Blow drying and/or ironing the hair is a personal choice, and doesn’t change the fact that the hair is still not chemically altered. You need to lighten up, Joe Joe. You wear your hair the way you choose naturally, and allow other’s to do the same without judgement.
Very true, her hair is in fact natural if she hasn’t chemically altered it,just like other natural hair sisters she may just prefer to use the old blow dryer after etc now and again ..
I wasn’t sure till your comment if she had relaxed it or not.
Well aren’t you a breath of fresh air? #sarcasm :-
Girl, you are a fresh breath of Porta Potty. I told you before to have some tea. Apparently you never did and you’re still angry :'(
Goodness, you’d think it was YOUR hair she was relaxing! Why do you care what she does with HER hair? How does her hair styling effect you? I mean, I just don’t understand why these crazy, hippie naturals keep talkin’ about natural this and natural that. Shit, ya’ll make people not even want to go natural. Why would they want to if this is how all naturals act?
Mind your own business and be free and self-enlightened all day long. Why everybody else gotta be enlightened with you? You need other people to confirm that what you’re doing to your hair is right so that you feel better about it? I mean damn, go somewhere and love YOURself.
Iduncare
My celeb twin looks gorgeous!
I love how even though she’s a big star, she’s hanging out doing what we all do–playing with her hair. You go, Sanaa!
In her own words “hair weave killa”. That simple means that weaving ruined her natural texture.
WOW there are truly some haters here, Her hair is beautiful and she is too ! BTW her hair is natural since it grows out of her head , if we are going to be so technical on what “natural” is very few of us qualify .
Who is “hating”? We all agreed that this is a beautiful sister. This is a site based on hair. We are entitled to our own opinions of what we think of the woman’s hair. -_-
I may be wrong but if its not relaxed (which she stated in an interview somewhere) this could be a blow out or press, and the light in the pic makes it look a bit straggly. My hair is very healthy but once I add heat it really straightens very straight like perm press straight.
Sanaa is my idol. She is one of the most gorgeous over 40 women in Hollywood, but, seeing this picture of her hair makes me appreciate the fact that I quit relaxing my own.
I bet she would look even more beautiful wearing her hair in its natural texture.
i’ve got some shea butter and scissors for those fly away ends. that’s my girl though.
lol
I just think she really needs a trim badly but her hair is nice with that salt and pepper look. Sanaa is gorgeous trim it up cut the damaged ends and she will kill it.
i don’t think its salt and pepper it looks like the light is just hitting the individual strands of hair. that will make it look like salt and pepper hair.
Her hair looks more like it was blowdried than straighten with a flat iron. Her hair appears to be damage due to it being blown out and her individual hair looks thin but I’m sure in its natural state she probably has a head full of healthy hair. I don’t know of this person at all so I can only make a generalize opinion based on the picture shown above of her.
BGLH be making some women mad when BGLH say a celebrity’s hair is natural or shown natural. Then you got some of those women assuming it’s a weave or relaxed. Who gives a dam! At least the hair looks good.
Her hair looks pretty thick and it’s decently long, so I’d assume it’s not too badly heat damaged to the point that it’s significantly breaking, but those ends definitely need some attention.
Her hair looks beautiful and healthy. That’s what hair looks like when it is straightened. Just because hair is straightened doesnt mean it is fried and damaged. How can you say something like that from looking at just one picture? Why do we naturals feel the need to judge everyone else’s hair? This is such an unfortunate trait that keeps growing in our community. Let us uplift each other and not spread negativity. She seems to love her hair and thinks it is beautiful. That’s all that matters.
Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Does she get a relaxer? Cause if not that ain’t natural.
everyone has a different definition of natural. for her and many others natural means “its my hair” for you natural means “not chemically altered or not relaxed” there is no one universal definition of natural when applied to hair
I am a cosmetologist. If I am doing a consultation and I ask if your hair is “natural” I want to know if your hair has any chemicals altering it’s natural texture or curl pattern. I ask other questions to determine if other products are in the hair (i.e. color, etc).
isn’t she a spokesperson for a perm?
I’m sorry but I do not like this hair style! Wearing hair naturally straight is fine nothing wrong with that, I just don’t care for this particular style. Beautiful girl though.
doesnt look like a style to me. looks like the weave is out. washed and dried, waiting to get styled. ijs….
I see what you are saying. Makes sense.
Her hair looks beautiful it’s odd that because she says she straightened her hair now looks ‘damaged’ in some way,her hair looks healthy period.
ikr. for some reason all these new naturals on her forgot what permed hair looks like before its flat ironed and have become super judgemental. looks like she took out a weave, washed and blow dried her hair. doesnt look flat ironed or curled yet….
It looks like it has a bunch or spilt in and kinda uneven and broken off it spots. Some would consider that damage. She needs a trim.
People seem to have a different definition of what they consider to be damaged.
Gorgeous woman, hair looks a little damaged but still beautiful. Nothing that a good trim won’t cure 🙂
She is very beautiful. But hair is a lil weird and broken. I think she’s the prettiest actress alive though! 🙂
yeah it looks a bit damaged but she is a beaut.
Amazing bone structure! Hair looks fried.
*waits for someone to say its a wig*
anyway I agree this is a gorgeous head of hair =)
Do we mean natural as this is the hair that grows out of her hair natural, or natural as in not chemically processed. Based on the pic, I think Sanaa only fits one those descriptions. Either way, she is gorgeous.
probably as in naturally grown. thats what many consider as natural. many consider chemical free or not relaxed as just that chemical free or not relaxed. everyone has a different definition for the word…
Meaning there are no chemicals in one’s hair.
@ Jeannette I didn’t mean to give you a “thumbs down”, I was trying to click thumbs up but it gave me the opposite and wouldn’t undo.
LOL That’s okay…hope you enjoy this holiday weekend!
