[Pic] Lupita Nyong'o Wants You to Stop Referring to Africa as a Country

Africa is continent of 1.1 billion people — roughly 16% of the world’s population — and 54 countries. Still, it is not uncommon to hear it referred to as a country, often out of ignorance or even as an insult.

Well, one of the biggest stars to come out of the continent made clear that this isn’t acceptable. Lupita Nyong’o, who was raised in the East African country of Kenya before attending college in the United States, posted the following meme to her Instagram account.

Much of Nyong’o’s family still resides in Kenya. Her father is a Kenyan Senator and her mother is director of the Africa Cancer Foundation.

  1. Yes. Africa is diverse in ethnic groups, foods, dances, clothes, languages, and facial features. I like the Benin, Batammariba, Dinka, Kikuyu, Jolof, Ashanti, Nok, and much more.

  2. Yes Lupita I am sick of it too. I am a Tswana with a mother from South Africa and father from Botswana, and I do NOT like to be lumped in with other parts of Africa. I always say I am Southern African if I want to be vague, I never say ‘African’.
Africa is not a monolith. We have many languages, cultures and food, heck we don’t even look alike!

  3. I agree that it’s ridiculous that some keep acting as if all of it is grouped together in one cultural block. I get mad every time I hear the phrase “African culture”. I think the same applies to Asia and the Middle East.

  4. If I tell someone that I’m Nigerian and their next question is “Do you speak African?” I swear I’m gon hit somebody. Like okay, you’re French, “Do you speak European?” I want people to hear how stupid that sounds.

  5. Lol…thats one of the first things we were taught in elementary school that Africa is a continent. But society or the media i should say always had one narrative for a “country” called Africa at the end of the day 90% of people think that all of Africa is poor, that the people are violent warlords and so on.The media has summed up one continent into one culture. Its up to everyone to really educate themselves.

  6. Yesss!! People need to know that Africa is NOT a COuNTRY. People are so uneducated when it comes to Africa. Some people don’t even know that Egypt is in Africa, they think it’s in Europe smh.
