Nicki Minaj Shows Off Her Natural Hair on Instagram

Back in 2012, Nicki Minaj tweeted a photo of her straightened natural hair. Because her face was not shown in the photo, it sparked a lot of debate (that, weirdly, continues in our comment section to this day) about whether or not the hair was really hers. In March 2013 Minaj did it again, tweeting a photo of her waist length straightened hair, but not revealing her face.

Well, we can put the debate to rest because it is indeed Nicki Minaj’s hair! She took to Instagram today and posted several images (face and all) of her straightened natural hair, with the simple caption “No perm. No extensions.” The photos show Minaj rocking far less makeup than we’re used to seeing, and her natural beauty is astounding. Now, if we could just get some texture shots 🙂

1. I’m English born but my parents are Jamaican. I’ve been natural for about 10 years. I’ve been re-energenised by the whole natural hair movement which has made me more enthusiastic about my hair and healing hair that has had too much heat through blow drying. I see so many natural sisters. I love it!

2. Nicki Minaj is a Trinidadian by birth. If you want to know about her hair texture, look up the term “dougla”. It’s a term used to refer to people who have a parent of African ancestry and one of Indian heritage.
Judging from her cousins and the rest of the “dougla” family across here in Trinidad i would say her hair texture is between 3A and 3B… she’s a mixed chick

3. I’m African. Where u come from we love straight hair. At least ever since I can remember. I’ve been straighteningmy hair with bblow dryers till I was 16 and premed it. I came to the states and I got really bad hair breakage. I did research and I’m now transitioning. Most Africans with natural hair are doing dreadlocks. Only in the us us where people embrace the afro. Otherwise in Africa that’s the seventies.

1. That’s not true actually. U.S. does not embrace afro hair. Yes certain individual love their dreads and their afros but when it falls down to it they get stereotyped and judged harshly by the outside world.( By outside world, I mean US citizen who are not of african descent) Not to be racist because even african american pass judgement and stereotype on to other african americans. I hate to say it, it’s sad but it’s oh-so very true. The thing it is about america, those with Afros and dreads just simply DO NOT CARE about what everyone else perceives them as. They don’t allow someone else’s perception tear them and give in to the very obvious form of peer pressure. And here’s your proof, of all the african americans you see with Afros and dreads, Not one of them are high positions of Executives, CEOs, or Chairmen. When you see an African American with dreads and afros who is doing well and gets great pay, It’s because they work for themselves, They started their own company.

2. You say you are from Africa. Africa is made up of 55 very different couuntries, which one are you from?

In my country, Zambia, most naturals wear afros, and not dreadlocks, although it is true that dreads have become more popular due to more acceptance. Also people are not extremely in love with straight hair there, more and more people are wearing curly weaves and weaves that one would mistake for natural hair. Mostly people keep their permed because they are uneducated on how to take care of their natural hair and find it difficult, not because they are in love with a straight look. Naturals are always complimented and people are always sayin they wished they could do it too.

4. ANYWAAAAYS….Getting back to hair…May I interject? Nikki Minaj looks beautiful indeed. It just goes to show that her methods of keeping her hair healthy under her wigs and weaves actually work for her. I would love if she shared her processes. No matter what her genotype or phenotype ( or anyone else’s for that matter) I thought people here were supposedly interested in hair care for growth and health. ? Maybe it is just me.

5. THERE IS NO PARTICULAR LOOK IN TERMS OF COLOUR OR HAIR TEXTURE WHICH HAS MONOPOLY TO BEAUTY. I am from Kenya, a Country of diversity in hair texture and black African skin tones. Here all women are considered beautiful in different ways – either with long permed hair or short kinky hair, slim bodied or curvy ones, light brown or dark skinned ones, etc. I am light skinned and my daughter (12 years) is dark skinned. She has always told me that she likes her “dark mahogany” look and she wants to be a model. I once had long permed hair and Kenyans loved it. Of late I am rocking my kinky Afro and Kenyans still love it! ALL is beautiful, it starts by you like yourself first.

6. Not convinced. These photos prove nothing. Neither of these photos show her scalp. She holding it up which could very easily have 2 or 3 2 inch tracks at the base of it. The other photos don’t really show the base of what she is holding. To clarify, she should take a photo from the back with her hair parted down the middle and then from ear to ear, starting two inches from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Until and unless this is done, this statement remains questionable.
Signed……….the weave therapist.

1. This was posted two years ago but the ignorance still lingers. Nicki Minaj doesn’t NEED you to be convinced of her own hair. Who cares if you’re not convinced about somebody else’s hair? What’s that gotta do with you??

7. Nikki’s parents are the same as me and my husband our daughter gets asked at least twice a week what her ethnicity is, she has long wavy hair. We live in nashville tn. In the Caribbean we are all mixed with some race or the other so it confuses Americans when you are not put in a certain race or don’t look black enough I have a beautiful daughter.
Nikki is what we call in Trinidad a dougla( do-gla) there so many in our country. Black and East Indian mixed One day we may all accept each other for who we are.

8. Oh and Nikki who made the comment about the Indians, you go girl with your history!!! I am proud of you! Keep on educating. Whatever the race you speak to. Our people don’t know our history and its sad. We are the originators of this earth. The first people. People in the bible had locks. Jesus is portrayed as a white man. There was a black wallstreet in Oklahoma. There is so much more.

1. I have always understood that the white and Indian race are TWO different races, not from the same stock at all in any way,Dravidians are Asian so they can’t possibly white…some go as far as to say Dravidians have black in them.

9. People come on!!! This is one of the reasons why many of us black girls have such a complex about our hair. People always make it such a big deal. That’s also why we post these pics of our real hair. Not only because we may be proud of “having hair” but because we feel we need to prove this to the stupid judge mental world. I read these comments and sometimes I am afraid what I may read by someone ignorant and uneducated. Black women/girls/men, it’s time to find out who you are if you don’t already know. If you wear weave and have kinky, curly, straight, short or long hair up under, o.k. love thine self! We need to love our girls coming up, educate them on true history(not just what’s in the textbooks) and they will never need validation from the likes of people who only think that everyone should be light skinned and straight haired to be beautiful!! Why is it important to see this girl’s texture? For me personally, if you take care of your hair, you have good hair. Come on people, time for a change. God bless.

10. I love Nikki and her natural hair is gorgeous. Nikki has personal hair stylist on hand & can afford top quality wigs therefore it is easier for her to achieve this. However anyone can have long hair but it take a lot of TLC & patients. A lot of people even I can admit myself I don’t take great care of my hair but it’s on the books, I want to be chemical free and got back to appreciating my natural curls.

11. I am happy that she posted her hair pics. It is always nice to know what celebrities really like like, but on their own terms, no paparazzi pics of them looking crazy. Perhaps she is slowly transitioning to the point where she will begin to rock her natural hair and drop the wigs? If not, we know what her hair looks like now. Her hair is very long, as long as some of the women who have posted on this site. I wish her continued success.

12. What the he’ll do any of this have to do with her revealing her natural hair… any type of black person can grow their hair to any length …with proper care… in her case wear those wigs Help protect her hair. My hair is about that length and have some nappy stuff.

13. girl yes that happen to me when I went to East Africa, Kenya they are so colonized by the British also it scary and sad that as black people we are brain washed to believe only a certain look it beautiful with our race stop the madness cause at the end of the day no matter if u light or dark Africans or African Americans we are all still black ni’ s to them peace

14. She looks gorgeous and has a natural beauty. I like this look. And the whole biracial half Indian debate about her hair should not be an issue when we have full african and full bloodied african American on YouTube by the hundreds with her mid back length and longer Please

15. I don’t really understand why someone’s hair/texture/length/style should be a topic of debate. It’s really not that big of a deal. I refrain from commenting on most of the stuff here cause this is supposed to be about how one takes care of their hair and not criticise someone else’s hair.

16. It’s no wonder we as Black/African American/minorities can’t come together…we’re so divided on something as small as hair and how the next person wears their hair. One picture can produce so much hate and negativity because the person in the picture is not wearing their hair how “you” feel they should wear it. Sometimes it’s almost laughable reading some of these comments and all because of hair.

17. It’s 2014 and sistaz are still having the black vs mixed heritage debate….people of africa and of African descent are the only group who show the greatest genetic diversity. Come to Africa and you will see all kinds of tones , features body shapes etc. but for the ignorant the struggle continues

1. My cousin went to Ghana sporting her natural twists and a local lady looked at her and said girl get you hair done,it looks a mess. She was floored and confused.

1. Depends very much on where she went, too. Places that see more tourism, for lack of a better work, have more Western ideas as far as beauty and appearance. Most Africans don’t really care for African Americans, though. Or rather, the larger groups of Africans that I’ve come across outside of America (a solid portion of them Ghanians), don’t like African Americans.

18. Yay! She did it! Gorgeous as usually. And ladies the whole discussion about her length . . . really ?! #CutitOut There is no need to have excuses anymore to someone else’s hair growth. Learn about your own hair and devote your time and energy to grow yours to lengths you haven’t ever experienced. Anyone can experience breakage. Anyone can experience length! Now back to Ms. Thang! I wanna see texture shot too!!!

19. Trying to generalize people and place them into boxes is such a small minded thing to do. Like America, India has a COMPLEX ARRAY of complexions, features and hair types. From “snow white,” to as “dark as night.”

Also like America, the very dark indians with “strong” features are never represented. Which leaves people to believe there’s only “one look” for a race of people. The picture below are ALL “pure blooded” South Asian or “Indian (red dot)” women. No the one on the right is not AFRICAN or an AFRICAN migrant but she is from the Jarawa ethnic group or “tribe,” have you. Anthropologist have learned that these are the oldest people of “india” and are part of one of the first migrations of people out of Africa.

I won’t go too deep into the history lesson but basically India was once dominated by a people known as the “Dravidians.” They were very dark and probably looked more like the Jarawa woman in the photo than “Indians” of today. All of the mathematics, science and spirituality (Hinduism) was developed by the Dravidians. But india was invaded by the “Arayns” which were a “white skinned people.” they are believed to have created the “caste system” of india, mixed with the native people, and being the dominant culture rewrote the history to have them as the ancestral founders. Between that and being colonized by the British India suffers from the same post colonial white-washing many former colonies have been left to deal with.

So I say all that to say this, East India is a complex place with a complex history, and like us their is no “typical.” There is only what’s represented or NOT represented in the media. People are complex and you do them a disservice when you bring uneducated assumptions and stereotypes.

1. Thank you for sharing this history. I went to college with a lot of Indian people and they did appear to have the same complexion issues that African Americans have. The lighter skinned Indians were seen as more attractive than the dark skinned ones by their own kind. Its interesting to hear other cultures are dealing with the same issues after being “colonized” by British or “Arayn” people. Thanks again for sharing.

1. Every ethnicity have issues with the color of their skin its fascinating that no matter where you go in the world everyone has their own idea of beauty and people are perfectly happy to go through extremes to fit their mold of beauty.

2. I love this website, but really your lack of knowledge about factual history is astounding, and I’m embarrassed that so many people have +’ed this. It’s been determined that Dravidians and Aryans not only came from the same race anyway, but infact neither of these are actually races themselves. You have posted a myth. And citing them as a reason for the development of the caste system is laughable.

20. I am PURE black and I have NATURAL black features which are a narrow nose and thinner lips. I was born and raised in the United States. My sister is PURE black with a broader nose and much fuller lips than min, also born in the United States. We have the same parents, both PURE black. It amazes me things people say and don’t have the knowledge of what they are talking about. Don’t categorize people. Speak of you own experiences.

21. First off we already know her socall image has been thru a great deal of enhancement so I wouldn’t be surprised if she added hair implants like the late king of pop did like she done bleached like him did nose/cheeks like him so whats next like her ass & tits yes typical & only thing typical is she just has a low self esteem like the average female that wasnt fortunate to transform all their natural born features like her. Now I wouldn’t even hate I’m actually proud of her its her money her life & if I had it I’ll repair a couple flaws in a heartbeat… #TeamNickiAllDay

22. But… can we talk about that FREAKING BOMB platinum blonde frohawk in the background of the second frame… and how I need a tutorial… stat… thanks!

23. Why she covering up the part where the hair is tied together. Lol lol then when she pulls it she holding the base. Lol sry guys I’m lol at myself for say this.
I would open up that hair part down the middle and say look haters. Lol. Just saying.

24. I’m surprised she has edges considering all the lace fronts she wears
But she looks gorgeous, I love her this way.. absolutely beautiful

25. I love Nicki Minaj.
She can rock a weave, wig and natural, she can rock extra makeup or no makeup, she can wear lots of funky and different costumes or just a t shirt and sweats and she still looks gorgeous.

26. I think nicki hair is beautiful. Y’all need to stop hatin just because ur hair isn’t that long. For the record her hair is impressive so stop hatin. I bet u wouldn’t say it to her face so don’t post it online. Even though she is mixed she is still considered black. That’s all I gotta say. The end

27. I usually never comment on these but um… Really? “Thin lips and a pointy nose make one less black these days? That’s just ignorant and funny. I have very thin lips and a pointy nose and both my parents and all grandparents are black. I even get asked what I’m mixed with since I don’t have “typical black features” smh. How about maybe… God made us all different and as African Americans we are beautiful and diverse and DONT ALL LOOK THE SAME regardless of what color white America classifies us as. In my family we are yellow to dark brown and ALL black. Who cares. Different is beautiful and different features are too. Nicki has the features she has and regardless of the rooting of her ethnic background whether she’s mixed or not she’s a beautiful black woman just as we all are. The end.

28. Her features are the same features that many black women have who are of any heritage…her features are not specific to Trinidadians. Any black woman you come across could have them, whether they identify as African American or a mixed racial heritage…and what is completely black? Because as Di mentioned none of us are “completely black”…unless you are from Africa. Quite frankly I would not speak to judge a person physical appearance, such as their pointy nose, unless I have known that person all of their life and know for a fact that they were born with that pointy nose. The chick has had a lot of “work” done which may or may not include her nose (also contouring your makeup can make the nose appear thinner), and unless you personally know Ms. Minaj you shouldn’t speak on her pointy nose being in fact hers naturally.

1. Yes she has had a lot of work done because you was there-go and look at her before and after pics-hardly a difference-she was prettier in her younger days.

29. I DON’T GET WHY EVERYONE IS GETTING ON HER CASE BECAUSE SHE WEARS WIGS AND LOTS OF MAKEUP? IT’S A COSTUME AND SHE’S SIMPLY EXPRESSING HER ARTISTIC SELF.YOU ALL ACT AS THOUGH SHE NEEDS YOUR APPROVAL WHEN YOU DON’T EVEN GET WHAT SHE IS ATTEMPTING TO DO. it’s FUNNY HOW WE HOLD A BLACK WOMAN TO HIGHER STANDARDS.YET WE NEVER JUDGE WHITE WOMEN FOR GOING OUT IN COSTUME WITH WIGS AND MAKEUP LIKE NICKI DOES. BLACK WOMEN CAN BE SO JEALOUS SOMETIMES…LOOK,MADONNA DID IT, KATY PERRY DID IT LADY GA GA DID IT. THEY ALL WEAR WIGS THOSE CHICKS NEVER WEAR THEIR REAL HAIR, SO WHY DO YOU ALL EXPECT NICKI TO WEAR HER OWN HAIR? SHE IS A PERFORMER FOR GODS SAKES!! WHO WEARS THEIR REAL HAIR DURING PERFORMANCES? AGAIN NICKI DOESN’T HAVE THE TYPICAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HAIR TEXTURE. SHE IS HALF EAST INDIAN SO OF COURSE HER HAIR DOESN’T BREAK OFF LIKE MOST BLACK WOMEN’S HAIR DOES.SHE HAS NATURALLY STRONGER HAIR THAN MOST BLACK WOMEN. AS FOR HER FEATURES SHE DOESN’T APPEAR TO HAVE AN ESPECIALLY LARGE NOSE, SHE ACTUALLY HAS A RATHER POINTY NOSE WITH THIN LIPS,I DON’T THINK SHE IS TRYING TO LOOK WHITE AT ALL? HER FEATURES ARE JUST A PRODUCT OF HER MIXED HERITAGE. AS FOR THE BLONDE HAIR, WELL SHE WEARS PINK, BLUE AND PURPLE HAIR AS WELL.. I DON’T THINK SHE WEARS THE BLONDE HAIR TO LOOK WHITE. SHE JUST CHANGERS HER HAIR COLOR UP OFTEN FOR FUN. SHE’S A KID, AT ONLY 25 MOST OF THE GIRLS ARE DRESSING THIS WAY. WHY DON’T YALL STOP CRITICIZING HER FOR TRYING TO LOOK WHITE. SO SICK OF THE BLACK PEOPLE POLICE.

1. question, what is the typical african american hair texture? because i have been black all my life and i have yet to see anything typical about us. just like our skin shades vary to the most polar extremes, so does our hair… so i just want to know what typical is. as a matter of fact, the average african american is like 65-80 percent white thanks to slavery. this is a fact. so i would say she’s no more mixed than any other black person, from the Caribbean or not. im actually being serious with the question though because im wondering if you really thought that statement through or not.

1. You know good and well that there is a TYPICAL problem with most black people experiencing the breakage of their hair.. I am well aware of African Americans history with slavery and African tribal mixing. However lets face it most black American peoples do have extremely course, damage prone, dry hair. That’s not to say black people can’t have a different texture from another.

I read through the comments every month on here and you can’t tell me that if your hair is slightly less curly than most black people you won’t get the “Oh are you mixed?” from other people. I never said ALL black people have the same hair. I just know that it is pretty typical for the descendants of Sub-Saharan Africans to have courser hair that African hair tends to dominate most black people’s heads. Just like not all mixed people can grow long, flowing curly hair. This is why the weave industry is thriving. What is the article about?? It’s about Nicki actually PROVING that she can grow long hair. Everyone was like, “Oh that’s not her hair” that’s because black people don’t come across other blacks with long flowing hair. Obviously that means most relaxed sisters cannot grow long hair because of problems with breakage. Black hair needs special attention to grow long. Some black women’s hair doesn’t require much work to grow.
I am also well aware that almost 90% of black Americans have a complex heritage and background. I just found out I was related to some Queen in Spain in the 1500’s so guess what I get that too.

However courser damage prone dry hair tends to dominate most black people’s heads whether they are mixed with white or not.

Everyone was worked up over her not having real hair, yes we all wanted proof of h er long hair to prove she wasn’t wearing a weave.. Why because there is an assumption black women don’t have long hair naturally.. There is a reason for that. MOST do not.
I never said NO black woman has long hair. I know Africans from the West who have long hair to their butts and they are PURE African. But lets face it we wanted proof. We would never ask for proof from and Asian or White woman. So that goes to show black women tend to typically have a tougher time growing longer hair.

1. You really need to get past reading about black hair and thinking that you are some type of expert. She’s West Indian and they too have very curly hair textures. Any hair that is not nurtured is likely to be dry and damaged. Do us all a favor and speak for yourself and your hair texture because it’s clear that you are speaking from a very closed POV.

2. Lol she’s not east indian she’s from trinidad which is the west indies… And she does look better without all that make up costume and eye contacts. Lol and jealous of what exactly?

3. I was with you until hair breakage and being mixed, you don’t get out much you racist troll witch. No people should not be riding her junk about what she does to her body and what she would look better as, like their opinions matter. Plus I always disliked people that put black women against each other as if other races of women are perfect.

You need to get real, her hair IS NOT impressive. Seen so many black women with much longer and full hair while permed and her features black people come in different looks, you’re disgusting and anti-black.

1. First of all, You must often go around making assumptions about people that you don’t even know. Second,I know people from different parts of Africa with a pointy nose and thin lips. She could look like them for all we know. However East Indians do tend to have a different nose and bone structure from black people. Hey, did I ever say that Black people ALL LOOK alike?? No I never said that, however, there is a more typical look that we do tend to have which are fuller features than NIcki has. There are features that we refer to as BLACK American features and you know it The problem is black people like you are ashamed of natural black American features and you don’t want to admit we tend to have fuller features. YEs there are thinner featured blacks , and i t is not anti-black to say so. I am anti-stupid that’s all. If you have ever been to Africa you will see tribes who look Asian or Native American, however they are PURE Black they just come from a different region.

.There has been inter tribal mixing as well so yes blacks in America can look a variety of different ways due to inter mixing of Africans from different regions, not only due to race mixing with white people through slavery.

Tribal mixing went on for 100’s of years so obviously you have African Americans who look different silly. HOWEVER most of us have fuller features which Nicki does not obviously display. Then how do you identify blacks from other races in American if we don’t have fuller features. you may have the thinnest lips in the world, however MOST Of us have full robust soft features.
Thanks

4. I think its fair to say she is a black women but she is of mixed heritage-many Trinidadians, just like St Lucia have an overwhelming influx of coolies-black mixed with Indian people and although Niki is black you can tell from her hair texture, length and features that she has a mixed heritage which is NOT completely black.

1. her hair length and features don’t tell us anything about if she’s completely black or not.

2. I’m from Trinidad and their are many mixed chicks like myself, but many of them have short hair so what are you insinuating?

1. Well maybe your hair just can’t grow some people have a terminal length that is shorter then others but most black women who have a mix in them tend be able to grow hair naturally longer then a full black chick because of the DNA of Caucasian hair.

1. I didn’t say my hair is short lol it long and keeps growing and i cut it frequently, I’m saying that their are some girls mixed with indian genes and their hair isn’t quite the length of Nicki’s hair

2. I am not sure if you are new to natural hair sites or the internet in general, but it has now being proved time and time again that long hair has nothing to do with ethnicity but lack of knowledge about caring for textured hair. With the plethora of information out there it still beggars belief that people can still go around spouting unscientific jargon such “but most black women who have a mix in them tend be able to grow hair naturally longer then a full black chick because of the DNA of Caucasian hair.”
It is no longer a display of intelligence to say anything along the lines of the above.
Kinky hair is naturally dry because sebum doesn’t travel down it well. Moisturise, treat your hair like silk, protect do not abuse. understand it will remain umanageable, short and damaged UNLESS you let go of hair care methods ingrained in you since birth even though said methods are for OTHER textures.
its sad, abandoning the methods deviced for OUR own hair, led to a chronic case of almost an entire ethnicity having stagnant lenths of hair, which they then decided is because of genetics, then they go on to decide long hair is not something they can achieve without a little bit of DNA from others. I’m sorry but maybe our grass would be much greener if we spent as much time watering it as we do looking at other people’s.

1. Its a racial slur to those back in the day who use it that way-just like the rappers call each other niggaz as opposed to nigger-I’m sure their not being racist.

2. In the Caribbean, it’s common to call Indians (people of South Asian descent) “coolies” and Native Americans/indigenous groups “Indians”.

1. True, I have cousins as well as many friends that refer to them sometimes as coolies-we do not use it offend although back in the days the older blacks used it in a derogatory to refer to Indians or blacks with Indian decscent which is why some may take offense if you use it to refer to them today.

2. The natives in the Americas were never Indians, it’s a name which was given to them by Europeans. Hence, there being no such person or place as West Indian/Indies. Secondly the word coolie is highly insulting and racists. Learn about the history of the word. We people really should educate ourselves and stop relying on Europeans to feed us their HIStory.

3. I disagree, they are Indian through and through-their look, their heritage, their bloodline, their DNA is Indian don’t think because they migrated to foreign shores in the Caribbean -they are Caribbean
In fact when I went to Jamaica I saw a big divide between the Indians and blacks-the Indians didn’t associate with them -have their own shops-speak their language and tend to be bizarrely racist towards the blacks lol even though its the Carribean.

4. Don’t know if you’re responding to my post Dionne but just in case you are i wasn’t talking about the Indians from Asia. My parents are from the Caribbean so i know all about the indentured Indians.

5. I’m from Trinidad and i love my natural hair being mixed with African and Latino decent i enjoy when others express themselves through many forms especially their hair. Nicki i love your hair it gorgeous just like you

6. I was with you until you went on Nick Minaj’s hair being stronger than most Black women’s hair and her hair not being typical hair for Black women. There is no such thing as typical hair when it comes to Black women. We come in too many forms to lumped into one category.

I do agree with you about White entertainers wearing wigs, weaves and make up because like you said it’s their job and they are performers. I certainly wouldn’t want to stress my hair from daily performances and having to keep it looking perfect all of the time.

7. you stated that Nicki hair is long because she is part East Indian and that her hair is NATURALLY STRONGER HAIR THAN MOST BLACK WOMEN…NO that is a MYTH. Black women can grow long hair. Look at youtube and see all types of black women with long hair. If your hair is breaking it’s because you are not educated about how to take care of black hair. My hair is to the back of my horizontal bra strap. I condition it everyday with oil, not grease, and moisturize it with Nexxus conditioner. It is never dry. These products do not sit on top of my hair/scalp. They immediately sink into the hair shaft. Never use GREASE because it does not sink in and clogs up your follicles leading to breakage.
I always wash my hair every 3 to 5 days because I work out and sweat. I rollerset and sit under the hairdryer while watching tv or on my computer.
Every 6-8 weeks I perm with A mild conditioner perm like Design Essentials.
Every 2 months I trim it 1/4 inch. My hair is full of body and natural swing. I put it up on top of my head to sleep and sleep on a silk pillowcase. I usually do not have to put any heat on it because of the roller setting makes curls last longer.

30. omg im not being a troll and again i know the diffrence between native americans and indians who are from asia, i slightly read her comment wrong but the point of my comment was to say that it does not matter what you’re mixed with, you can grow your just as long as that east asian, white, hispanic, and south asian with the proper care…..and i know what trinidadians are usually mixed with like i said i read the comment wrong. you guys arent even understanding my comment completly you’re just focusing on the negative and not the positives of me saying everyone can grow there hair long

31. yayy she looks great.

One thing I don’t understand is that these celebrities will rather show off their “natural hair” on instagram but will NEVER wear their hair out on the red carpet or on regular outings.

yes you can make an argument that its difficult to style for red carpets and takes time, well the same can be said for weaves.

And we do have other celebrities that wear their hair OUT on red carpets with no problem. Making noise about the hair you refuse to wear in public on a social networking site is kinda meh to me. That is one thing I don’t understand.

but again, individual preferences.

32. I never realized that she was very pretty. she should stop trying to look like a white barbie and flaunt her natural looks. The blonde, blue wigs and overly done makeup aren’t cute especially when you have natural length and beauty underneath..

33. THAT IS CHAKA KHAN’S CHILD!!! LOL! She looks sooo much better without all of the crazy wigs, outfits, and makeup! Simple makeup (well for her)…Simple ponytail…Simple white V neck…GORGEOUS!

34. This just goes to show wigs can be a protective when worn properly and you take care of your hair underneath it regularly!

35. love nicki she looks amazing…

gab union just posted another pic of her hair surprised that’s not on here.

36. ok…? does she go over a regimen? does she disclose her favorite products? does she mention the additional hair they added for her top bun? or is that very thin ponytail magical? and what’s with the overwhelming cat-eye eyeliner? is that a thing now? Frankly, Nicki is very pretty completely fresh-faced- just some mascara & a clear lip — gorgeous… I must say tho, that little black crochet bodysuit is adorable!

37. Personally, I don’t gawk over length. HOWEVER – I do gawk over full edges. 😉 Nicki’s edges look healthy and full so more power to her!

38. Given that her face, ass, etc. are the creations of a plastic surgeon, I can’t really take her seriously as showing anything “natural.”

These celebrity “one photo of my hair between weave changes” photos are getting obnoxious. You want to show pride for your natural hair? Rock it on the red carpet. Until then, spare us these photos and just rock your weaves loud and proud and keep looking good while doing it. (You can wear your hair however you want. No need to post these photos reaching for strangers’ approval- which is what it is.) And spare me the lies about how these women only wear weaves to protect their real hair- b/c their real hair usually looks like an abused wreck. Myth busted.

1. But you don’t know Niki to know IF she really DID have surgery-the before and after pics are more or less the same so if she did it was pretty subtle-and makeup and lighting is excellent in giving you a transformation.

2. The absolute nerve of some naturals. “Don’t be showing us your real hair because you don’t rock an Afro on the red carpet!” Please. It’s her hair, if she wants to show off her hair, which it looks like it’s out for a photoshoot, them she could do that the same way it is her business if she wants to keep her underneath those over the top wigs. And why is it that people feel the need to bring up that she or anyone else has had plastic surgery to try and make their point somehow more accurate?

39. To help lower all the critiques statements. Her hair is gorgeous I do believe it is real. When you have millions it is a lot easier to obtain this length because you can afford an endless amount of wigs and have your hair braided whenever you want. Far as makeup nothing against full makeup such as contouring long as it compliments. Her contouring was never an issue it was the excessive highlighting that was ten shades too light for her skin-tone that was a problem. On the red carpet side by side to Beyoncé Nicki was noticeably lighter which was a huge problem. Now her makeup is far better.

40. The REAL test is actually wearing her natural hair out. I mean, her hair is great, but to me it really doesn’t matter if you’re just weaving/wigging it on the regular. *shrug*

41. She looks much better with dark hair in my opinion, but I’m not sure what the hullabaloo about having longish hair is with these celebrities. Their hair is in completely covered protective styles almost all the time, and every healthy person’s hair grows so long hair just happens when there’s no chance for stress on it.

42. She looks like she could’ve been a model instead of a rapper… like I always thought she was pretty, but she looks amazing here w/ the less make up (let me clarify, I’m not saying she looks better because she’s wearing less make up, I’m saying she still looks good w/ less make up and I can see more of her natural features). Her jawline is also very like idk what word to use – she looks like an Egyptian queen in the 2nd to last picture.

43. She looks so much better without the wigs, warpaint, blonde weaves and stupid youtube on crack contouring.

Who knew underneath all that paint was a naturally beautiful woman.

I hope in 2014 women learn that makeup is to HIGHLIGHT your features not distort your features.

Also what good is it to have beautiful hair if it is HIDDEN! No problem with wigs and weaves but let your REAL light show and not only on Instagram.

1. @maitime

Women aren’t wearing make up for you. Women can wear however much makeup they want. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to wear it.

1. Never said don’t wear makeup but wear makeup on that HIGHLIGHTS your beauty not contouring features that are not naturally yours. You can wear whatever pleases you but IMHO going overboard with makeup HIDES beauty instead of highlignting it.

Cliff notes: LESS IS MORE!!!

1. I kind of agree with you there maitime. But it’s more of a professional necessity. While a young woman here in the real world can get away with a bit of liner and some gloss, she also does not have to sell a brand. Normal ladies can afford a sunspot or blemish or two.

Anika’s Nicki Minaj” Character is just that. A persona, a costume that performs on stage for fans. If she wasn’t unique with her own special brand of cool gaudiness I doubt she’d have such a devoted fanbase. It’s much in the sense that Lady Gaga isn’t really Ms. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta(woah what a mouthful!). I wouldn’t use a stage character comparison for much on the debate of discussing beauty. lol

1. True about the stage persona. But I think you can look professional without the clown makeup. She looks gorgeous in those pics but with the light bright makeup I think it really hides her beautiful skintone. I understand wigs BUT I just find it refreshing to see more natural authenticity every once in a while.

2. at the end of the day, ppl will have whatever style they WANT regardless of what YOU think “looks good”. If they feel good, that’s all that matters.

44. Wow. Her hair is gawjuss, although straight hair bores the heck out of me, it looks nice and healthy. and she’s a beaut. I was explaining to my friend who is apprehensive of wearing her natural hair out why she should, and it is because natural hair does bring out the authentic beauty in a person. I mean it’s just obvious, you are beautiful because well, you look like how you are supposed to look. We can def see that with nicki minaj in comparison to her usual over done costumey look.

45. Her hair is long, and yes its looking like hers, but neither you nor I can tell if her hair is healthy from either of these pictures. Yes with all her money it very well should be healthy. But if she is any busier than me-which she totally is-its hard to maintain some healthy hair. I can tell its fine though. Not sure if that is natural or from years of wigs and weaves. Im just glad she finally got some sense and showed her face. Lol

1. You are right. These pics do not show us a head of full, healthy ,natural hair. All I see is a lot of pulling and manipulation to make it seem as such.

46. If shows you how much, as black women, we either a) damage our hair and/or b) hide our hair, that someone has to scream “it’s natural AND long!” and we get so excited over it and applaud. To be honest, it’s not even that ‘long’, but I guess people see it as ‘long for a black girl.’

This actually isn’t a negative post, but just an observation of what it says when we get so excited over this (me included). On a more positive angel, it’s a way to highlight that we can have (and many do), ‘good, healthy’ hair! Which I think is why we’re eager to ‘show off’ – we want to dispel negative perceptions of black women’s hair.

47. But she’s of Indian descent! It shouldn’t be surprising that it can grow that long. We buy hair from them for Chrissake.

1. Speechless. Have you not seen “full” African people with hair longer than that? o.O The hair’s not even that long compared to the lengths people are now achieving, it shouldn’t warrant an ignorant comment like “she’s got ——- in her”

1. That is a stupid comment for multiple reasons first of all the proper name that you should call cherokees are native americans stop calling them something there not they are not and have never been Indian they are not from India thats like some one calling you the N word ,thats very offensive when you call native americans indians because of the history behind that name, and that is so stupid no one is only black, definitely not African americans we are all mixed with something generally native american or white somewhere down the line, you could have more cherokee in you than her so just like her, you,me and even that random black girl you see walking down the street with damaged, dry, hair thats holding on her head for dear life can grow hair down to her butt its all in how you take care your hair and nothing else

1. Nicki Minaj is originally from Trinidad. Trinidad has 3 main races there: Chinese (from China), Blacks (from Africa via the slave trade) and Indians. And the Indian people that are there originally came from India…in South Asia. I’m not sure whether any of the native Amerinidians (Caribs/Arawaks) survived.

2. If you were referring to me about the “that is so stupid no one is only black comment”. I don’t live in America so not every black person I know could have had another ethnicity in their ancestry. I am talking about Africans (think west Africa), where African ancestors can be traced for a looong generation.
It seems everyone just wants to believe there has to be something other than African in you to have long hair.
Your hardwork and determination are suddenly dismissed when people find out that you are 0.0000000000092% Caucasian, or the more recent phrases “everyone has been mixed along the line”.
I always try and use Nigerians, Ghanaians west African as an example because it has to be that extreme(not extreme for me, but you have to talk at a level that people will understand sometimes) for someone to believe…. But then people still go on about differences in texture or they must be mixed.
Why is everything that people find positive something they want to associate with EVERYONE else but Africa?
In the face of logic, that dry thirsty hair breaks and our hair is fragile and that’s why we have had short hair for so long, people still won’t believe. When someone grows long hair because of care, don’t reduce their hardwork to you must have….. In you (whether they do or not).

3. Hmmmm that’s interesting, I too am a Trinidadian and while mixed with various races not chinese which isn’t prevalent inTrinidad at all. I find it interesting when people think we are all mixed. Being mixed doesn’t necessarily make your hair long. She looks amazing and her hair looks pretty good but I’m not sure it’s because she’s trini.

2. How do you guys not get that the commenter is trolling on all of yall. I mean seriously, it happens all the time.

48. Wonderful results from four years of complete protective styling under wigs. Judging by her hair Nicki’s hair stylist keeps it moisturize under her units. Also her makeup is getting even more better by the day thanks to YouTuber BeatFaceHoney.

49. Sigh. People people. The colorful wigs the different looks and styles. Just imagined if she did all of those things to her real. She would have no hair. The wigs and all if that are apart of her image as an entertainer.

So that my friend is why she doesn’t rock her real hair all the time.

And why do people get so bitter and snippy when celebrities show of their real hair??! Maybe they want to show it off! I know if I had waist length tailbone hair I’d show it off too.

With that being said. Her hair looks REAL and she looks BEAUTIFUL

50. I think she looks gorgeous. She should rock her natural hair more often. She’s really pretty. I’m glad she actually does take care of her natural hair underneath all those wigs

51. This is the best I’ve ever seen her look! I’m impressed. I wished she realized how attractive she looks this way versus the other.

52. Smh I’m tired of the “she’s pretty BUT…” or “I like her hair BUT…” What happened to paying a regular ass compliment and saying nothing else. And what people fail to realize is she is in the entertainment business the wigs, weaves, extreme make-up is part of how she gets paid. It’s sad bc celebs catch hell for being fake but when they get caught off gaurd or are not “working” it’s “OMG she’s not that cute without makeup” or “she aint got no edges” blah, blah, BLAH!

1. I get the entertainment business BUT the world would not stop if she unplugged and showed people her real natural beauty once in a while….mix it up a bit and not just on instagram. I have no problems saying that the showbiz Nikki looks a hot mess because she does.

53. I saw these earlier today and my exact thoughts were “Oh my gosh, she is soooooooo pretty”. She looks stunning without all the make up because like they say less is more. I LOVE this look on her!

54. Is it a trend, game or just straight disrespectful? I spent my whole life as a natural but yet these celebrities who i guess needs more attention can just upload a quick pic of their “temporary natural hair” like its a big deal. How about this, if they walked down the red carpet, went to a big event or uploaded pictures of their natural mane more often maybe then ill hit the “like” bottom but until then i can give two f****

1. Not to be rude, but you sound a tad bitter. How is it disrespectful for a woman to show her actual length underneath the wigs after years of keeping it hidden? That’s her protective style and it works for her. No one has to walk down a red carpet or what have you to get your “like” or to please you. It is not that serious.

1. Funny how the person who says disrespectful chooses to use the word “Nappy” as her name to describe kinky hair

55. She’s beautiful & dark hair certainly fits her better than that damn blonde! Lol I’m really feeling this look on her because not to throw shade but I always thought she’d be bald headed but I guess she just uses weaves as a protective style. I use to do the same, it worked for me & its obviously working for her as well. You go girl!(:

56. It’s good to know she’s taking care of her hair under those wigs.
I like the “natural” look (no colorful hair or white-washed make-up) on her a lot better.

1. Lmfao my boyfriend said the same thing! No one should come at you because everyone has their own opinion that’s why I never understood why some people get so worked up about it sometimes like sit down! I feel the way I feel & you feel the way you feel just let it be that & move on. I personally think that’s her hair and she needs a trim & you think she got that phony tail and that’s fine! haha(:

57. I love Nicki’s hair but sometimes I do wonder why celebrities always feel the need to flaunt their real hair like why.I know they want to prove they have hair. Just a thought I made a video on in it awhile back featuring many other celebs whose done it.

Check out curlskinksfashion on Instagram

1. Celebs like to flaunt their hair the same way how we like to flaunt it when we love and feel amazing about it. Plain and simple

58. She looks nothing less than stunning in these photos. I cant believe that being all that “Barbie” makeup and attitude is this gorgeous woman! She should rock this look more often.

1. You said it,she is naturally pretty with great, healthy hair..her alter ego style is something for her career.

1. Why would people be bitter? Her hair is ok. I always say though, that with these famous black women, I don’t get why their hair tends to be so jacked up at times. If I had their money my hair would be down to the floor. With all the best products and care money can buy. There have been regular chicks featured here who would put these ladies to shame. Nicki’s hair is in much better condition than certain other folks. She could use a trim though.
And she’s not bad looking without all the makeup. why does she insist on it?

1. Please, having money has nothing to do with “hair growth”, taking care of it does and knowing what works for you.

1. Right in most celeb case they the have hair down to the floor because they buy it. If I was a celeb I would probably go the weave/wig route also doing constant photoshoot and appearances with a bunch of different stylist in your head could be damaging
