Fly Protective Style, Part 3: Retro Braids

We often get questions about how to jazz up protective styles. Over the next several weeks we will be sharing fabulous protective styles to keep your hair stylish AND protected.

This gorgeous style originated with Shanti of A Curl’s Best Friend (pictured above) and was adapted by Monique of SofullSista. (pictured below)

I think it’s so cool how it looks awesome on both textures. Monique also did a video tutorial. Check it out:

So what do you think ladies? Do you like it? Would you rock this look?

  1. Hello There. I found your weblog the usage of msn. That is a really neatly written article. I will make sure to bookmark it and come back to learn more of your useful information. Thanks for the post. I’ll certainly comeback.

  2. Yeah, I rock this and I get sooo many compliments and it’s easy to modify and make it look different. It works with a flat twist too! I think it works best on an old braid out or a blow out’s last leg of the race 🙂

  3. Love love love this! I think it is do-able on any hair texture. Can’t wait to try this out!

  4. If your hair is not long enough for a ‘braid down your back’ or you’re not a great braider I think the front of the style would look great and still retro paired with a french twist or low bun. Even if you can only flat twist the very front bang, you could probably do the sides going back by tucking the hair instead.

  5. Thanks like a lot! It’s so cool, I’m gonna wear this hairstyle for days haha
    Be blessed for that!

  6. Can’t believe I never thought of this! My hubby’s a Motörhead and I rock the rockabilly look from time to time- Ive always straightened my hair to do victory rolls, but this braided style totally rocks!!

  7. Those hairstyles look great on both hair textures.. I also see that tiashauntee aka “herbesthair” blog also did a version that looks really good.

  8. I love this style, but it will have to wait for a few more inches 🙂 I don’t want the braid to be down my back.

    1. Agreed!

I want my braid to be down my back too. So, maybe I’ll try this style next year.
