But they are so darn expensive! What are some cheaper (I’m talking $12 and under for an 8 oz container) that I can use!
Great question, right off the bat I can think of Hairveda, Shea Moisture, Darcy’s Botanicals and Taliah Waajid. They all have quite a few products that are under $12 for 8 oz.
What about you ladies? What are your go-to low-cost brands?

You know what isn’t too bad? Palmer’s coconut oil line. I found it at target and it seems to work pretty well on my hair, which is UBER DRY and one of those more difficult-to-manage curl patterns 😀

I only use Taliah Waajid to twist my locs. I usually buy a big vat for $30 that lasts me about two years. I oil my hair with a mix of oils.

I absolutely live for Giovanni!!! my faves are the Smooth As Silk condish, the Triple Tea Tree line, & the leave in condish spray! Amazing products that last a long time for a great price!
mine would hands down be the giovanni line for my everyday use. i found it at target and everything is under $10. my favorite low cost conditioner is suave professionals shea butter and almond. i love that i got a 32 oz bottle for under $4.

Plain old shea butter and oils work for me and its all I can afford. Johnson & Johnson detangling spray and leave in conditioner are also affordable and work well as long as I am hydrating properly.
Have any of you ladies tried the new line from Queen Helene called Royal Curling Creme?, it’s a knock off of kinkycurling custard but at a reasonable price 7.99 for 15oz. I brought it the other week and really like it, but just don’t go overboard with the application because it will flake, but it really defines and locks in the curl pattern.
While I am a fan of Shea Moisture and Kinky Curly, $10+ is a little pricey and adds up over time. I try to stick to cheaper, more available brands like Tresemme, Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essence, and Trade Joe brand. They work just as well as some of the expensive products I’ve bought in the past.
Shea Moisture, Aubrey’s,Desert Essence, VO5, Suave Naturals, African Royale Hot Six Oil, Garnier Fructis Pure & Clean Fortifying Conditioner (love that stuff!), and Dabur Vatika oil (a great alternative to plain coconut oil).

Just a note- I’ve personally only had 1 problem with a DM product and that was with the Super Buttercreme. The oils seperated on me and I didn’t think to contact them for a replacement. I did buy another jar at a later date and didn’t have that problem again.
It’s usually most cost-effective to make your own stuff. Butters, oils and other ingredients are usually easily obtainable, and there are tons of recipes and ideas for any need you may have (leave-in conditioner, cleanser, styler, etc.) online.
But, I do realize a lot of people cannot be bothered with mixing things themselves, or maybe they simply like buying products that are pre-packaged with pretty labels and such. Aside from the brands already mentioned, Hairobics also comes to mind, which is available locally in some areas, like here in L.A. I’ve only tried their braid spray, which I LOVE and it has fantastic ingredients; plus, it’s only about $6 at my BSS for what I *think* is a 12oz. container. I can’t speak to what the other products in their range cost, but I think they’re also pretty affordable.

and i use Bentonite clay to cleanse, and it’s only $6.
really though, that’s it for me. i don’t really mind paying more for quality, but there are always tons of sales and coupons (on groupon, living social, and kgbdeals) so that i never really have to pay full price anymore.
I also really love the Canadian Live Clean brand. Their Replenishing Mask is the bomb and I get it for 4.99!

I use and love Shea Moisture products… where I’m from all of their products are 9.99 at Target and I don’t have to pay anything additionally for shipping. It is all about convenience for me, plus their product line works well for my hair.
I love Shea Moisture! I use the Moisture Retention Shampoo and Deep Treatment Masque (as a leave-in conditioner). The DTM is my fave because it moisturizes and seals in one step leaving my hair soft and sheen-y for days. I haven’t tried any other product lines specifically made for natural hair and I have no desire to (Why fix what isn’t broken?).
I personally use the Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter shampoo. I’ve been using it for just under a year and I don’t plan on giving it up. I love this stuff. With that being said, I’m not interested in using anything else from their line. I use a different conditioner for my hair and my hair loves that.
It’s all within my budget as well!!!
Oyin Handmade products would fall within her budget (the 8 fl oz Honey Hemp Conditioner is $11 or $12). I love, love, love their stuff. They have great products, good customer service, and fast shipping. Also you can get them on aggregator sites like BGLH Marketplace. Perfect holy grail combination.
Another good one, if Tiki is the patient type, is SheScentit. I have used and really liked the Avocado Conditioner (8 fl oz for $6) and have heard some good things about other products in the line. I haven’t repurchased because it took almost three weeks to get it, the customer service doesn’t seem to be on point yet, and it cannot be found on aggregator sites. I am really trying to cut down on the % of my hair budget that goes to shipping. But, not a bad line.
I also like the Live Clean Argan Oil Restorative and Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioners. These are my staple products. They are about $8 for 12 fl oz. They are currently not in the US so you need to order it from Canada (well.ca). They offer free shipping if you spend a $100 so I stock up once or twice a year.
Also Curls line at Target is supposed to be good.
I love Live Clean prouducts… Try the Bali Oil line too… Live Clean are my holy grail on my 4a/b/c hair…. I used to get so jealous reading about all these products that seemed to work great but were only available in the US (Shea Moisture, Qhemet, Oyin) but now I am glad we have our very own in Canada!!! 🙂
My hair is finicky with proteins, but I think I am going to get the Bali conditioner next time I stock up. I will use it for my monthly shot of protein once my CJ deep fix runs out. I am sure it will work just as well. I really love this line and the cost is perfect. I am hoping it will be in stores here sometime soon.
I believe both Qhemet and Oyin ship to Canada. I know the shipping costs are awful though.

I second Oyin Handmade, especially about their fabulous customer service. I made a mistake with my shipping address on an order and they actually called the post office/shipping company and got it fixed for me. Customer for life.
Plus, I feel really comfortable with their ingredients, their products work well for my hair, they always smell delicious and they are very reasonably priced. Yay for Oyin!

This may not be a natural’s first mind but Cream of Nature has always been good to me and relatively inexpensive. Organic Root Stimulator as well (LOVES the Hair Mayo and Replenishing Condish).
