  1. What’s up with her stupid expression? So you smile when your hair’s straight, then grimace when it’s not?

  2. I just wish that wasn’t her reaction to her natural hair….it’s far more beautiful than the weave she sports ??

  3. Great hair but is she going to poop? I would like to see that hair now on TV and not only her slick weave. Why always hiding natural hair behind the scene?

  4. Props for the photo. Though I wonder why she chose a photo with the expression on her face says she hates her hair.

  5. her hair is like a garden, she shuld mow tht lawn.

  6. Keke Palmer, I see you are a very beautiful lady, singer and actress. The best movie you actered which I like is Akeelah and the Bee.
Are you really a great speller? Please send the answer to my mail.
    Thank you.

  7. I think That these Black women celebs should Be proud of their natural hair… I’m a 13 year old who LOVES MY natural hair, and I am my inspiration, but For those kinky-curly girls who want someone to look up to, These black female celebs aren’t representing us by all of their silky weaves… I haven’t seen enough black Females who show off their kinks, curls, and waves with PRIDE. THAT’S who we are, Kinky-Curly QUEENS, not Blacks who want to fit in with whites. Let’s set our own style!

    1. Awww, you are so cute. Love your black pride. Keep it up! I agree with you. Not enough celebs are repping but if we regular folks are rocking it, the media has no choice but to take notice and catch up.

  8. Love it..

How come we never see most of these celebs with their natural hair on the red carpet? just on IG and FB….hmmm…

  9. I wish there were more black women celebrities like janelle monae and eryka badu who weren’t afraid to wear their natural hair! It’s so inspiring to see them embracing all parts of their blackness instead of showing young black girls that they need straight hair via perms or weaves in order to be pretty or desirable

  10. people are making WAY too big a deal about the facial expression.. she’s being silly, and what she IS: a kid, so leave her alone, and stop over analyzing this!

  11. whether you wear weaves regularly or your natural hair out all the time, we all have days where we feel like this about our hair. it’s just a face. and even if she doesn’t like her hair like that, that’s her prerogative. if you love your natural hair, then yell it to the sky, but don’t criticize someone if they don’t. besides, i’d say she likes her hair since she posted the pic to begin with.

  12. At first I actually felt that she was somehow communicating the words “PRIDE” by making that face…not disgust.

  13. She’s making that face because her hair is hard to manage when it’s like that & she can hardly comb through it. She only wanted to take a silly pic, being that most of her pics are her out on public or on the red carpet & she looks really extravagant in most of them. I hate that people blow harmless, fun pics like this out of proportion.

  14. I love that you post theses celebs with their natural hair. It shows that they go through the same things that we – and our daughters go through daily. Bravo to them for not being afraid to post the pics too!

  15. ilove this young lady very much but i know thats not her hair too different texture i can see from the side and the make believe part i can see the different. still love her

  16. All these comments shows how deep the issues surrounding natural hair are.Until we change our mind and how we view our hair things will not change.

Gen 1:31 “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good”….

Psalms 139:14 “I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.”

Eph 4:23 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.

  17. But why is her face so pale…..thats the only thing i could consentrate on…

And one thing i wish is to see these celebs hair styled…..not fresh out of a weave >_>

    Pretty girl though

  18. sigh. on the one hand i am thrilled to see more and more young black women “revealing” their natural hair. (i would like to see vanessa williams’ hair! the beauty queen not the other one. now THAT would be a major statement to the hollywood crowd.) recently, at a book signing for tanarive due at a local college here in atlanta, the majority of black girls in the audience wore natural hair of all lengths, textures and styles. that was refreshing to see, the hair as well as so many in college! on the other hand all the talk about our hair, which is the only human hair of its kind on the planet, is quite distressing. even when the talk is positive, it still strikes me as a defensive reaction to the common and global belief that our hair (and darker skin colors) determine anything about us other than african origin. i think we will know we are no longer racially obsessed and suppressed, or post racially repressed, i.e. living almost entirely entranced with white (eurasian) values concerning the female form and ideas about beauty, when all of these site and all of these discussions about our hair have so long been discontinued that no one remembers what the fuss was all about. imagine a time when hair has no meaning at all. none. imagine that!

  19. Its a growing trend. Black women are realizing that they are being cast in bad light for never showing their real hair in a time when black women appear to be obessesed with straight flowing tresses & never a curly/kinky hairstyle can you find on a red carpet. They want to show their support and pride they have abt their hair in a small way BUT if they were really proud of their hair, we’d see them out n about with their real tresses. Its a long journey i think before black women with kinky, coily hair will feel like they can or WANT to show their natural hair. Nothing wrong with a straigtening your hair but when thats ALL we see…well it does send a message and now celebs are trying to show they arent what we think. I like her pic, it shouldnt be a big deal but again…it is bc our hair isnt truly embraced in mainstream without boxing us into some ridiculous india arie, eraku badu type of “mother earth” category jbc we wear our natural hair.I never realized how disturbing our hair is to white folks..its kinda funny and yet disturbingly indicative of their mentality. And their mentality has rubbed off many black women bc we are uncomfortable, disturbed or even revolted by our own natural hair. I think we are turning a corner but its still a whiles away. The other sad side is even when some celebs come out with hair pics, haters are the first to jump up n claim “thats not their real hair!”. That saddens me too. The benefit of lying abt the kinky, curly nature of your hair? I dont see the payoff. Its not like Hollywood is chasing us down to show our hair in its natural state so why would anyone bother to lie about it? You dont gain notoriety for wearing your natural hair UNDER a weave/wig 24/7. Whats so great about that?

  20. Young people are not the only ones who makes these faces. I make faces like this whether my hair is in braids, straightened or natural. I will not completely tell my age but I do have a 20 year old daughter. We go to Xmas balls in our pretty dresses & make faces because it’s just fun. Of course we do take politically correct pictures because my husband is an NCO in the Army. We like to mix up our hair styles to suit our lifestyles. When it’s school time because of hectic schedules we rock weaves & braids. When we have time, we go natural. Every once in a blue moon, we put a relaxer in our hair, which is every few years. We like to change up our looks. It’s not that serious. People are taking what celebrities are doing too personal. Who really cares? They have stylist, people tugging & pulling at them all the time telling them what to do that is politically correct for their careers. When they do little things “out of character” we judge them harshly.

Note: For those who do not really know this, a lot of white people wear wigs & weaves too. Wigs, weaves and braids are not just a black thing. Yes I am black but when I saw some stuff that were in these white girls heads, I nearly fell out. Clip ons, weaves, & wigs, some of them even had extensions braided into their heads just to sew the weave in. Now when they took the make up off, I felt as if I were in the room with a bunch of scary ghosts. They always told me how beautiful I was & how I didn’t have to wear make up. I only wear make up to fancy events like the Xmas ball. Other than that I do not wear make up at all.

At the end of the day, love how you look in whatever style you decide to wear your hair in whether it is a weave, natural, relaxed, braided, or wig. Believe it or not, celebrities do not have choices on how they wear their hair. They have to portray an image to the world so when I see them rebel & show a natural, fun picture of themselves, I love it. It is their only time to really be free of the glitz & glamour. It’s their time to be themselves. Let’s stop judging them & love the fact that they had a rebellious, selfish moment of who they really are.

  21. I liked the face. I thought it was just silly until I started reading comments about people saying it was because she didn’t like her hair. If she thought it was that bad she wouldn’t have posted it online. Idk I thought it was funny. Why so serious guys?

    1. No offense, but that’s not the point. I don’t think it’s such a big deal except for the fact that by making the face she is 1. making a statement about how she feels about the hair 2. in publishing it on IG, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t think “it was that bad”.. she is probably a bold person who doesn’t care (there could be a million reasons,.. like she wants to make other people with “African hair types” that she is “normal too”.. whatever)… >> 3(!) BY making that face she is promoting the attitude that natural hair is undesirable (or harder/worse to “maintain”)… >>> 4. THAT does not promote assimilation, but furthers the general attitude of our (American, or Western) culture is a white culture, that anything that is “different” darker (or lighter) than the norm is out of place, that anything TOO curly or frizzy or wavy is, again, undesirable. Disregarding the fact that she’s just 19 (which btw I am too) and cute and sweet, talented, smart (these are my impressions), she is a celebrity. She has the power to help change. Anything celebrity published leaves a great statement, because they are people who are 5. just like us.. and what WE do matters!

      1. I think you’re looking way too hard into this. She’s just making a silly face and posting a photo of her hair.

      2. OR maybe she’s just a young adult & takes stupid silly photo’s like the rest of teens/young adults these days on FB/instagram/twitter.

      3. I agree with that other commenter, you’re looking way into it. For all you know she’s making that face in a sense of “my hair isn’t styled yet, bad hair day.” I mean can’t we naturals have a bad hair day just like everyone else? Or what…? I consider it a bad hair day if I stretched out my hair so much that I lost a curl pattern and I have no time to rectify it. I mean we naturals have amazing curl patterns and its great to show that off. Don’t automatically judge her as a self-hating natural.

  22. Ummm I’m pretty sure that she was just making a silly face to match up with the wild hair pic. MANY people do poses like this on instagram just to be silly…..definitely do not think its a big deal….FYI many celebrities are natural but HAVE to wear these styles because their schedules are too hectic and a weave or wig is fast and easy. Anyone who is natural, know that natural hair is very high maintenance. Plus with the stress of their lifestyles, a protective style such as braids and weaves is a smart choice.

  23. Her face just looks like faces young people make when taking pictures. It probably has nothing to do with her hair and I know when some of you guys if you wear weave or braids when its off make faces like wow or whoa…. give her a break she’s not immortal just a celebrity

  24. This is generally my face when I’ve been so busy that I have taken proper care of my tresses. She’s just probably having a bad hair day.

  25. It’s all about body language and her face is telling us exactly what she is thinking, whether we want to admit it or not. No celebrity regardless of their ethnicity wants to be caught dead in a picture looking like they just rolled out of bed. She wouldn’t have taken a picture with her weave half falling off her head and looking a hot mess, why would she do it with her beautiful natural afro? It’s great that she is embracing her hair, but she needs to do something with it too!

  26. i don’t think she’s making a face because she hates her hair. . .i think she’s making a face because her hair is A MESS. lol, we’ve all been there. it doesn’t mean she hates her hair, or is even disgusted, but i’ve definitely made that face.

  27. I think it is great that these gals are growing out their natural hair, but why are they always hiding it under weaves? Show your natural beauty!!! Stop hiding and bring it on out, display your beauty naturally!!! I hate to say it, but weaves make many a sister look twice her age (and wigs). I have seen a LOT of young girls looking older than my peers because of those weaves. Don’t get mad, I am just giving my opinion. Viola Davis was stunningly beautiful on the red carpet in her curls. Prior to that I have never seen her look so good and she looked a good twenty years younger!!!!!!!

  28. Ithink many or taking her face wrong, i have a teenager and her and her friends make these type of faces all the time its the cuteugly face #shrug just an expression.

  29. I think she’s just a young beautiful woman making a silly face. The fact that she even posted this picture shows that she is’nt too mad at the way she looks. When I take my hair out of protective styles I’m always proud of the new growth, the texture, and fullness yet horrified because I need a deep condition and a trim. So I get the face.

  30. Happy she’s nappy, but i could’ve done without the Ugh stank face. we all know the face and have made it before so its cool but expressions say a lot! Remember that dr. Miracle lady and her frowned up face? Everyone and their mama knew what that face meant. That she was horrified by her hair being jacked up. Now I’m sure keke loves being natural.. But to make that face implies that she A) thinks she looks like a monster/ beast(even tho she’s taking a fun pic) or B) is thinking ugh we need to fix this.

Even tho she and we love her hair, her facial expression sends signals otherwise. Now if she took a 2nd pic smiling, no one would think she’s not feeling her hair/ natural self. Jmo.

    1. LOL!! I do remember the Dr. Miracle lady! Thanks for giving me a laugh this mornin’ =)

  31. I don’t get it? First we shout at the top of our lungs about acceptance and hair and how we want to be examples for young women. But at the first chance when a young woman reveals herself, we tear them down for making a silly pic. Lol you people are ridiculous and I am not afraid to say it, either.

The face nah, but her hair is full and it’s hers and it’s beautiful. Please stop trying to tear people down all the time, we really need to stop doing it because it serves no purpose and takes away what we are all trying to achieve.

    1. have they not seen how some young ppl take pictures now. we all make exaggerated faces, whether its duck face or a stank face.
she’s trying to look cute. (she always does.lol)

  32. Man, people analyse this natural hair thing so much now that it is beyond scary. Keke, continue to do your thing, it’s your hair and your facial expression!

  33. How do we know she’s making that face because of her hair? Did she say something in her caption or are we assuming? She’s holding her neck how do we know it’s not a sore throat? Ijs.

  34. I understand your statement Tamara, about having good and bad hair days. However, if I know that other young girls who may decide to wear their hair natural sees this picture, it might deter them from doing so. There is a difference when Keke has her hair all done up and this look of OMG Argh!!! on this picture with her hair not trimmed, conditioned, oiled and styled. I too have good and bad hair days, I would be more careful of the pics I post if I was a celebrity such as her.

  35. Her hair just needs trimming, like mine’s does right now. Cut off the dead ends! It could be healthy. Mine’s ALWAYS looks and feels greater after I get a much needed trim.

    1. I got thumbs down for WHAT? Getting your hair trimmed does not stunt hair growth.
I guess some people are misinformed. It’s very beneficial as long as you don’t take off too much.
Or maybe it’s because my picture has me with straight hair but believe me, my hair currently is in afro form. Braided in plaits under my scarf. And I don’t get it straightened too often.

      1. You can take off less than to just an inch if hair. I know I need mine’s. Keep split ends from completing.

      2. Don’t feel like you have to explain yourself to people for why you have your hair straight. It is your hair and you can wear it any way you like. Some people are too judgmental. It is JUST hair people!

  36. If she would take care of her real hair and keep it conditioned she wouldn’t have that facial expression. She is likely caught up in the weave game.

  37. I don’t like the face she is making in reaction to her Natural hair, what is she thinking? If she doesn’t like her own hair that grows out of her head that way, how can anybody else have a positive view on Naturally Curly hair? embracemyhair.com

    1. there is nothing wrong with the face she is making. ive made that same face many times when I’m trying to figure out what to do or what the works its going in with my hair. its comments like that makes people like her and Lil Mama and Ashley Simmons use the weave. they are human just like we are they have bad hair days and good hair days too!

      1. Perfect example of how everyone views things differently. Her facial expression made me think she didnt like her hair as well.

        1. I was thinking the same thing Tasha. The look on her face seemed liked “Yikes, my hair is a mess.” I still say, I see nothing wrong with wearing wigs and weaves as protective styling, but to do it ALL OF THE TIME, makes me wonder if the person is too lazy to do their own hair or somehow ashamed of it.

          1. You are right for example I have an aunt who has indian hair we are black but she was fortunate to have indian roots. Well she only goes outside with wigs because she doesn’t know how to do her own hair. So I would say laziness plus just not having a clue is why some people would rather where wigs and weaves 100%.

  38. So let me get this straight…for the long, straight European look, she smiles and appears confident but for HER OWN NATURAL hair look…she frowns. Wow! Where’s the self-love in that?!

    1. So stupid you are the one that have low self esteem why the hell would she take a pic if she was ashamed or sad about her hair she was just being silly, stop relying on other black women wearing their hair to YOUR preference to make YOU feel good

      1. Harfeffde….wasn’t about ME….but I do recommend that you take your head out of the sand for a minute and see what’s really going on here…WAG THE DOG (look it up)!

  39. Black men have it so much easier than we do. Most Black male actors wear their hair in a short natural and call it a day.

While I think it’s great that Keke’s hair is natural why can’t a Black actress with hair like Esperanza Spalding’s, Kim Wayan’s and Tempest Bledsoe’s get considered for as many roles in film and television with their natural hair styled as Zoe Saldana and Megan Good (whom I love)? Why do we Black actresses have to don wigs, extensions, weaves while many (not all) White actresses don’t have to do that? I know the hair additions serve as protective styles in some cases but we all know that there are still too many casting directors that wouldn’t embrace a natural for a film or television role. I’m hoping that will change one day.

    1. Part of the weave/wig thing for movies and television is that you can guarantee a consistent look. This is important because filming is not done sequentially, and also you have to remember the nature of our hair – which is nature -( humidity, especially) can impact how our looks during the course of the day.

  40. I love everything about this picture. She looks her age. That’s the exact face I make when it’s time to do my hair. Not that I hate my hair, but “good gracious. this is going to be a process.”

    1. Word…. Idk maybe it’s a younger ppl thing because I’m around the same age as Keke ( I’m 18) and on my insta I have me making faces like this when my hair is styled and I look on point and when I look busted just to be silly. I doubt she’s sitting there like let me “smize” for instagram in my pajamas after getting my weave removed! Like sheesh like everyone has their opinion but let’s be real if she hated her hair would she of put it on instagram? And if she hated her hair wouldn’t it of been permed by now? Even though she’s young she’s still semi grown a d can afford a good stylist to relax her hair. But she didn’t! Like again it’s ur opinion but sheeeessssshhhh u guys need to chillax

  41. I wish some of these ladies would incorporate some natural hairstyles into their rotation even if they’re still going to wear weaves for work! I agree that it kind of makes natural hair seem like something to be hidden when it’s only associated with being in your sweats at home, but it’s also nice that people are admitting that weave doesn’t grow out of their head and they aren’t afraid to show what their hair looks like “undone”

  42. I knew this would be on bglh. Keke is a beautiful, well-spoken girl, and one thing I have always noticed is that her hair always looks good! I could care less whether or not she’s confident wearing her natural hair; especially since it appears that she uses weaves to protect it. The industry is different from our day to day experience I suppose. Anyway, I would have to say that there are few women whose weaves look as great as hers! I would love the hook-up 🙂

    1. I thought the same, I honestly feel this is like a venting site this site energy is so negative and self righteous, live n freakin let live..done with this site

  43. that face reminds me of the Dr. Miracle commercials for relaxed straight hair. She is natural, nothing new as there are plenty of celebrity’s who are, but I prefer women who have enough confidence to actually rock the natural look at a major public event like Teyonah Harris at the SAG awards.

  44. So, there’s going to be a post when any black female “celeb” posts a picture of their natural hair on instagram? What else are we supposed to say about it after the first 7 times?

  45. I feel her pain cause when I get my hair taken out of braids I make the same face. I’m not disgusted by my hair its because i know the long process ahead of me with the washing and the detangling. My hair is at a short stage so I also lightly blow dry and that can take some time too, but once its done I’m all SMILES. I don’t think she is disgusted by her hair, butI’m sure she is thingking, “Good Gracious Lordy, Lordy”!! Besides its just a picture and we don’t know what she was thinking about her head, so we should read into the face so much.

  46. I wish her hair was better styled in her photo. Most people have the incorrect perception that natural hair is unkempt and unattractive. This photo perpetuates that stereotype of natural hair.

    1. Her face is hilarious in this and it’s making me smile! But why should she care about what other people say or think about natural hair? It’s HER hair! Let her present it however she wants. If people want to assume that natural hair is “unkempt” or “unattractive”, then let them. If they do their own research, they’ll figure it out for themselves. If not? Oh well. I wouldn’t let someone else’s ignorance keeping me from being myself. I honestly think her hair doesn’t look bad here. Wild? Sure, but not “unkempt” or “unattractive”.

    2. I dont think so. black hair can be sleek and straight or it can stretch to all directions. that’s the beauty of our hair.

  47. I think it’s great that she’s natural. However, the face she’s making doesn’t indicate she’s happy about it. If anything, it looks like she’s disgusted. Maybe she likes being natural, but is just trying to communicate in the picture that she knows she needs to wash her hair/condition it, etc. It would have been better if it was a picture of her showing off her natural hair AND she had a smile on her face!

    1. She’s a teen people, that’s what kind of pic they take nowadays for fun.lighten up and stop over analyzing everything!!!! She looks beautiful!!!!

    2. Really Erica, what the hell, she can make the face she wants, if she smiles does that make u feel better about your hair, and to see all the likes confirm what ppl say about black women, always finding some negative just like y’all did with solange, toya and every other black women that don’t live up to how u feel they should be, live n let live so the f what she is making a silly face she is young if she wasn’t happy about her hair why the HELL woul she tweet the pic, we are our own worst critique smh

      1. you should really stop with comments like “it’s true what people say about black women always find negative things to say” i’m growing tired of reading this. i have witnessed other women being mean to each other and going on enforcing the others’ stereotypes on you (us) won’t help anyone. i have never heard other women or men no matter how mean and critical they can be to each other linking their behaviour to the colour of their skin and using the others’ opinions on them to make their point especially not black women opinions on them. many other women do that and not all black women do that go out of your house sometimes.

anyway as i’m not american i’m not familiar with keke palmer but she’s beautiful

  48. Ha! I was just watching Akilah n the bee today-for the 52nd time. I think it was met with positive comments because she’s universally well liked.. I love it, although I think celebs should get out of being natural undercovers. Its the best time to come out! Everyone is celebrating being different and unique, red hair, pink hair etc

    1. I really admire this young lady natural or not. I don’t see anything wrong with keeping natural hair under wigs or weaves, especially when your in the entertainment industry which requires a lot of different looks often. My thing is this: just because we’ve decided to embrace a natural lifestyle doesn’t mean that we should go around judging those with relaxed, weave or anything other than natural. That’s like the pot calling the kettle black. Most of us, at one time or another we’re there too, so what gives? That’s like the ex alcoholic talking about the drug addict and or another alcoholic even. We should continue to do us, not act high and mighty about our hair. The attitude may discourage those who may want to consider it one day. If we keep take care of our hair like young ladies on this blog then when we can inspire that way. But be critical which is hypocritical is just plain ridiculous and wrong.

    2. True,
now i know her. Last unday my little cousin was telling me how much of a fan she is of Keke.
It’s good to see her with natural hair also
