Angela Simmons Reveals her Massive Natural Hair!

• Aug 9, 2011

I absolutely LOVE this!! Angela Simmons tweeted;

Just took my weave out.. Look how long my hair grew. Its so thick !!

This is particularly interesting because we recently had a discussion about naturals’ hesitance to embrace weave as a protective style.

What are your thoughts on Angela’s hair??

It looks nice. I am happy weaves are working for her, but I’ll hate not having access to my scalp.

Weaves and my hair don’t agree. My hair pops with a quickness and my hairline tends to recede; add to that the lack of access to my scalp, I know I probably won’t weave again. That said @ her hair: shut the front door!

Krys
Guest

Her hair looks good but is she without a relaxer?

I can’t do weave personally and if someone want to do that for a protective style, then do it. It’s just not for me.

lisa

Not sure either…hmmm last time I saw her in person she had pin straight hair. Looked like a relaxer. Yep I know good blow outs can achieve a straight look but not in wet humid weather! lol

Proper weave care does this. No surprise here. I am an avid weave wearer lol

Wow that is alot of hair, and it is so thick and gorgeous. I would be afraid to wear this out to often because of birds maybe wanting to make a wonderful nest in it lol.…..j/k She’s probably waist length if she ever does any flat iron styles :).

I wonder if she is natural or has a relaxer with new growth?

Stacy
Guest

Is she natural? Has she said that somewhere? My hair is down my back and relaxed and when I blow dry it can get this big. I just wasn’t sure if she was relaxed or not.

Hairaddict
Guest

Exactly. A presumption seems to have been made. Relaxed hair can look like that just taken out of braids or a weave with new growth. And, besides this, have we EVER seen her with natural hair? It ain’t like she’s am ambassador or representative or even an advocate of natural hair, especially if you’re always rocking a weave or a press.

Melissa
Guest

Um, Natural Hair Militant much?? Does she not deserved to be featured here because she’s not an “advocate”??

Jp
Guest

Lol. Now I am not one for entertaining this, but both you (Melissa) and Hairaddict have a point. The purpose of this blog can be confusing sometimes. Sometimes it seems to question those who straighten their natural hair and the next minute they feature Oprah’s “natural”. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that but it will attract diffrent types of people to the blog.

Jp
Guest

*different

Melissa
Guest

Um… really?

It will attract different types of people to the blog.”

What ‘types’ are you referring to?? The relaxed ‘types’… basically what ALL of us were before we went natural 2, 3, or 4 years ago??

I’m sorry, but you sound really, REALLY condescending.

Hairaddict
Guest

Sorry, I’ve been natural most of my life. Everyone here is not a newbie and does not need to be schooled.

janelle
Guest

I agree, not everyone “went natural 2,3,4, yrs ago” that’s a huge and wrong assumption.

Jp
Guest

I meant people with different opinions. I apologize for not making that clear to you..it seems you have some hang ups about hair types? This post isn’t even about that so.…

Yahlah Yisrael

Let’s stop bickering ladies. It is SO not worth it. No one is being “presumptuous”, “militant”, or “condescending”. Angela Simmon’s hair is nothing to be so darn divided over. She doesn’t care that much about our hair so why are we cutting each other over a conversation about her’s?? I’m just saying…we really need to not get off on all of this finger-pointing type of stuff. In this case, hair really is “just hair”.

Hello! Im glad to see that women know their hair :-)! IF you take out braids or in this case weaves… relaxed hair can look like Angela’s. Further more, I have been finding that some ppl think that not having weaves in or braids in means you have natural hair. I was watching the tyra show and when she took out her hair(weave) she said this is her natural hair? Yet she said that it is permed. I think that it is a misconception that just because you dont have a wig or weave or braids or something else in… Read more »

Thank you! Her hair is gorgeous and the title of this blog is Black girl with Long hair. Healthy hair is what its promoting so idk know why there are people on here all up in arms wondering whether she’s relaxed or not. But you can’t please everybody (kanye shrugs) I guess thats what it really comes down to.

Not surprised at all! My clients start off as a lil Afro and after wearing it for a year the hair grows long and healthy! All I can say is their husbands are mad because they feel like their hair is long and healthy why do they still wear at this point its about the convenience and being able to work out and have no worries…I’ve put mine up so mine can do the same! Oh Yeah if its done properly then there should b no hair loss!

Why are you getting so upset over whether or not her hair is natural?
Above, it says that she just took out her weave, so, knowing that, at least part of her hair is natural. I’m seriously not understanding your hostility.

Sara

I knew Angela in college…it wouldnt surprise me that her hair is permed. No it doesnt matter if it is or not. Just dont pretend to be something ur not for the sake of personal gain. Thats called fake. But again however ppl want to live their lives they can and should. I come on this site to be encouraged and to see naturalista’s alike.… not to see impostors. Sometimes honesty can sound hostile, id rather that then sweet smelling fakeness any day

exactly…SHE never said she was natural..all she said was she took her weave out, and it had gotten big,Which all seems to be true..when i had perms I would wear my hair like this bc I admired the big hair and loved how it looked that way.relaxed or not I think her hair is gorgeous. My whole point in going natural was because MY hair wasnt able to reach is highest level of health with relaxer. So to those who can perm and still have healthy hair..more power to you..

No Prob to the permed women out there. All im saying is stay in your lane! When I was permed I researched Permed hair styles, websites and alike. Yes Angela did say she was natural. Do your research. Rudy Huxtable hair. Probably more “Natural” celebrities out there than we realize but it’s hiding under a weave. Not much of a celebrity but New York (Tiffany Pollard) has a lot of natural hair, too when she takes the weave down. Not just for “neo” soul singers anymore (and some of them are straightening their hair).

Weaves are an awesome way to protect your hair but for me I can never leave them in for longer than a few weaks and that is a waste of money. I did kinky twist last october and they seem to work for me i had acces to my scalp now all i need is to find a product that can reduce the itch and build up( looking at a Darcy’s mint scalp stuff LOL)

Some of the comments posted about Angela’s hair are pure envy filled hilarity. It’s amazing how we as naturals ask of society to judge us by the content of our character and not our hair texture, length or style, yet that’s exactly what some are doing. Really tho, if she has a relaxer what’s it to your scalp? Her hair looks good from the picture and all the haterade some of you are drinking won’t change that. I have only been natural 6 months. If I was natural 6 years I wouldn’t enter a “SOAP BOX DERBY” and try to… Read more »

And if you had been reading this site since its inception, you’d be well aware of its agenda and the readership it has always courted (naturals). It is best that BGLH tells us what the original MO of this site was and is. It seems many haven’t read this site long enough to understand why some people are peeved at someone who is possibly not natural being celebrated here. It is not about militancy. If you were a vegan and a dedicated follower of a blog to a vegan recipe site then all of a sudden a recipe for a… Read more »

I’ve “liked” this site’s group on facebook, and I read articles from this site and so many others like it all the time –and I have relaxed hair with no plans to transition/“go natural” in the near future. I think natural hair can be gorgeous, and I’m glad to see Black people supporting, helping, and learning from each other’s experiences. That’s why I frequent this site. Also, after reading more of the comments towards the top, I’d have to say there is some condescension coming from naturals here, even between so-called “newbie” naturals and those who’ve been natural for the majority of their lives. To make my point of view clearer: I’m actually more of a relaxed “newbie”. I’ve had relaxed hair for about 6 years. Before then, I was natural, when it wasn’t so socially acceptable to be so. Everything I learned about natural hair-care, I learned on my own, or with some help from my mom, using the library and Google to find the… Read more »

I stand by every comment I made above. Your interpretation of what I am or am not saying is interesting. Let me hold the branch down so you can better reach your assumptions. - BGLH since it started has promoted and concerned itself with NATURAL HAIR. The readership has been gathered largely from that demographic. It isn’t rocket science to expect that the same demographic will have something to say about relaxed hair being featured on the site. - People are people, you cannot control how others feel but I am tired of the assertion that a majority of naturals… Read more »

I don’t understand why people get really touchy when it comes to hair. Just because a person may not like her hair or may make a commentary about how it does not mean they are envious and that the natural hair “community” is an elite group looking down at all relaxed heads. I didn’t feel that way when I was relaxed and I don’t feel like an elite because I’m not. I really don’t think it’s that serious. People are taking these comments far too seriously. I’m patiently waiting for the day when my hair shrinks up to that length :-). I agree that there seems to be confusion about what is meant by “natural” hair. To me, it means hair that is not permanently altered by chemicals designed to permanently soften or straighten the texture/curl pattern. Yet the point has been repeatedly raised that some people think that when they undo their extensions, weaves, or whatever other hair add-ins or add-ons, that their own hair is then natural. May I propose a new term: “Actual”, meaning your own hair as it presently is on your… Read more »

I think some naturals don’t embrace weaves as a protective style because if you are in the habit of wearing a weave and others know it’s a weave, when your hair finally does grow long; people won’t believe it’s your hair, as evidenced by one of the comments above. I know there are some people who are always going to believe that a Black woman wearing long hair must be wearing a weave, but people who see you on a daily basis at work, school, family, etc. will know it’s your hair. Its gorgeous. My issue is that ALOT of black women put weaves in and fail to properly care for their natural hair under there. Also Vanessa is rich, she can afford the best weaves, the best styles, constant maintenance from professionals if need be. The average black girl cannot afford that. I also hate weaves that look fake. It makes me crazy. If you’re going to wear a weave, I should have to sit there and guess if its yours or if you bought it. These comments are interesting.…. I have no clue how people predicted that her hair must be permed and not natural because if you know anything about weaves you would know that under all that weave your hair is braided and when you take the braids out that have been in for months what happens to hair???? It’s very very stretched out therefore you wouldn’t be able to tell really if she was permed or relaxed because its coming straight out of braids.… interesting…
