For years I used products containing mineral oil to coat my strands. Many manufacturers use mineral oil in a majority of products that contain synthetic ingredients because of its behavior as a preservative. Mineral oil is the result of the distillation of petroleum which acts as a saran wrap against your scalp, slowing down one of the skin’s main job which is to eliminate toxins. On the other hand natural oils are easily absorbed by the skin.
When I used products that consisted mostly of synthetic materials such as Blue Magic I’m not going to lie my hair did grow, but it was not until I switched to all natural products that I began to see the true potential of my growth capability. Before the change in my regimen I experienced a GREAT deal of shedding and dandruff. Now those days are far behind. I’m still fascinated by how are body responds to topical products. Not only is it important to watch what we put into our bodies but what we put on it as well.
My boyfriend’s grandfather is full Cherokee Indian and when we met three years ago he always talked about the importance of what you put on your body, coming from a background of ancestors rich in a holistic lifestyle. But I could not and would not give up my trusty Coconut Blue Magic until just about a year ago. When I finally gave in to the natural “stuff” I was determined that this was just a trial period and I would be back on my good old Blue Magic in no time. Well it’s been a year later and I am still using the natural “stuff”. For years I had been so accustomed to my hair feeling greasy from the mineral oil based products that it took me a while to really understand what my hair felt like with natural oils.
Again I am not here to force you into switching into an all-natural regimen, do what works best for you, but I did come across two interesting articles from ehow.com about the usage of certain natural oils by Native Americans and the distinct benefits the hair reaps from each of these natural oils.
1. Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is an extract of the Jojoba plant found in California, Arizona and parts of Mexico. Jojoba oil has been used for hundreds of years by American Indians to moisturize and grow hair. The molecular makeup of jojoba has similar characteristics to the natural oil the glands of the scalp produce. Jojoba oil can be purchased at herb shops and can be applied directly to your hair or you can add a few drops to your favorite conditioner to promote hair growth. Jojoba is hypoallergenic and will not harm your hair or scalp. Aloe vera is another product used by Native American Indians to promote hair growth and is also an excellent moisturizer for your hair.
2. Wheat Germ/Aloe Vera/Coconut Milk
Mix 1/4 cup of wheat germ, 1/4 cup of aloe vera and 1/4 cup of coconut milk and use this product as a natural shampoo. Aloe vera can be purchased at drugstores and herb shops and can also be applied directly to the scalp as it will open pores on the scalp that may have previously been blocked and will allow the hair follicles to grow. The American Indians also used and continue to use several kinds of oils to promote hair growth such as emu oil, rosemary oil, and mustard oil.
3. Peppermint Oil
A few drops of any of these products can be massaged directly into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles and promote hair growth. Peppermint oil is also a good scalp stimulator but must be diluted before application. Mix 3 drops of peppermint oil with 3 teaspoons of water and massage into the scalp. These oils can be purchased at herb shops and all are hypoallergenic and not harmful to the hair or scalp.
4. Lavender Oil/Lavender Water
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula officinalis), native to the Mediterranean, is now grown in temperate climates worldwide. For centuries, lavender has been used by herbal practitioners to prevent baldness and to encourage new hair growth. Lavender contains potent anti-bacterial agents that soothe and heal scalp infections. It is useful in treating dandruff and adds volume to the hair shaft. Place a few sprigs of lavender in a glass container and cover with extra-virgin olive oil and cover tightly. Place in a cool, dark spot and allow to age for 3 to 4 weeks. Use the lavender infused oil as a daily scalp massage. Apply and leave on overnight. In the morning, wash hair with a gentle organic shampoo and style as usual.
A daily rinse of lavender water (bring water to a boil, add a few sprigs of lavender, reduce to simmer for 20 minutes, then cool) will impart a delightful fragrance and shine to hair. Apply lavender as a daily rinse after shampooing.
5. Burdock Root Oil
Burdock (Arctium Lappa) root oil, also known as Bur oil is one of the most important herbs used to restore hair. Burdock promotes healthy hair by relieving scalp irritations and improving blood circulation to the hair follicle. Burdock root oil supplies natural phytosterols and important essential fatty acids to hair roots, and has been traditionally used to reduce and reverse hair thinning. It is a key ingredient in many hair restoration treatments.
6. Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) has been used for centuries as both a food staple and as a healing medicinal herb. The herb produces a dark red berry which is dried and then pulverized into a fine powder. Saw palmetto is available in several forms including ointments, capsules, tinctures and teas. Recent scientific studies have shown that Saw Palmetto may have beneficial effects for those suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); male pattern baldness and other conditions associated with excess DHT (male hormone) production.
7. Stinging Nettle
Stinging Nettle (Urtica Diocia), found growing naturalized across America, blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT. Excessive DHT contributes to hair loss in both men and women. Stinging nettle can be purchased in either pill or capsule form and is said to be more effective when used in combination with saw palmetto. Nettle can be harvested in the wild (use gloves as the leaves are covered with tiny hairs that cause a stinging sensation upon contact with human skin). The fresh leaves can be submersed in olive oil in a glass jar. Seal and place in a cool, dark spot for 2 to 3 weeks. Apply the oil in an invigorating scalp massage. Stinging nettle essential oil is frequently an ingredient in organic shampoos and conditioners.
8. Rosemary
Used for centuries in cultures worldwide to promote hair growth and delay the onset of gray hair, Rosemary oil stimulates blood circulation of the scalp. A refreshing daily rinse of rosemary leaves simmered in water retains hair color. The rinse is most effective on dark hair. A few drops of rosemary oil can be added to olive oil and used as a scalp massage oil.
So interesting! Ladies, have you tried any of these? How do they work on your hair?

WIth the warm weather approaching I am wondering how to modify the use of my products for the spring & summer. I am ten weeks post BC. I use jojoba, grape seed, avocado, sweet almond and castor oils. Which of would you suggest I use as a lighter option for the LOC method?
Lola~sky, the best ‘light oil’ to use is grapeseed. Not only is it light, it combats frizz like crazy! I love coconut oil as well. It’s very penetrating and it also moisturizes. It can get a little heavy if used a lot. I would suggest using it on the scalp.
Do this product work on all types of hair!
I’m a hairstylist with a passion to learn more about natural hair restoration after my own hair loss struggles (I’ve since gotten my hair to return). Just over a month ago I started working with my husband who suffers from low thyroid. He began losing his hair over 10 years ago and it increased dramatically over the last 5. Using natural oils and treatments his hair is returning.
I had thyroid cancer and treatment. My sister, who is a biologist and organic chemist created all natural and chemical free hair products for me using only organic coconut oil and various essential oils and my hair is thicker and healthier than ever.
Hi Mateland, I was hoping you could help me? I to had a similar issue as you, I have been praying for a solution. I use an organic condioner for a year but has done nothing to get my hair back. Can you please send me the recipe you sister made for you. I pray my hair gets better. Thank you
Hi
I’ve been suffering with hairloss for almost 10 years now. I’m 28 yrs old, and it all started at uni. I started to use minoxidil and small baby hairs started growing but when I stopped using it my hair started falling out again a few months later.
My blood tests are ok- such as thyroid, but I’m low on ferritin levels. But I don’t think that’s the only cause.
Anyway it’s nice to hear you and your husband have had some success and I would be grateful if you would be able to share with me how you both managed this. Thanks!
Two great products which do not make it on the list of hair products often are Baobab oil and Mafura butter. Both these products are indegeous to southern Africa and have been used by the women for hundreds of years. Baobab oil is a great hair care product it is nutrient packed and contains essential fatty acids which are key to hair moisturizing and replenishment. Baobab oil has been proven to be more effective than a good number of lipids on the market, including oilve oil and almond oil.
Mafura butter is much less known here but it is an extremely emollient butter which is excellent for dry and brittle hair. It is great as a pre- wash conditioner or as a daily scalp treatment.
Do u knw if these products r available in south africa? I’d like to try them
They should be easy to find in South Africa, Southern Africa is one of the main producers of Baobab and Marula oil, as well as Mafura as the trees grow in abundance in that area.

Adam, who are “your people?”
I wore my hair to my shoulders for years, permed it, it freaked out cut it down to bald. Wore it that way for 13 years missing my hair and miserable the whole time.
A friend noticed my hair attempting to grow back and stated why dont you grow it out.
At this time caregiving for sickly parent and taking care of other parent. Hair was constantly breaking off, a bald spot, now coupled with anxiety is hard on the scalp, hair, and health in general.
Thank everyone who contributed to ingredient research and who posted their triumphant stories to help me on my journey back to a full head of healthy hair

Lot of people have had great success with Emu oil, i strongly suggest your people try that out!
Pardon me, but who are “your people?”
I highly doubt Adam was trying to sound racist, he was trying to help. There was no need to make that comment “who are “your people?”” which would have caused a problem if he was to reply back “black people”. He was just stating that emu oil works great with black people hair. Even if he used the phrase “black people”, you all will go ballistic. He is just a random white guy just like I’m a random black girl who try to help people with oils that could grow our hair.
P.s. This page DOES NOT only target black people. My two cousins are white and mixed and they have found this page VERY helpful.
LOL Adam nice one,
Please I want a good hair growth product that I can find one in Ghana to buy
I can honestly recommend Rosemary and Castor Oil. I’m not sure if it’s in the list. With hair growth, castor oil is surely the best for me since I lost a lot of hair plaiting it and it was always dry.
It’s true about the “A refreshing daily rinse of rosemary leaves simmered in water retains hair color. The rinse is most effective on dark hair”. All I did was buy some olive oil and dried up some rosemary in for a month then I use that on my hair. Then since my garden has a rosemary bush I do a weekly was with rosemary water. 15 stalks of rosemary and 5 litres of water then boil that. Add more water so you don’t burn yourself. And wash your hair.
Very useful article…

I am new to growing my hair my hair is part my shoulders a little amd i want it too grow longer. I have think hair and my hair texture is changing to become softer even when it’s dry. It’s currently braided as a protective style to give me a break I am interested in anything that will help me grow my hair as well as protect it when i do choose to apply heat. I’ve read a few articles in this awesome site does anyone have a good leave in our deep conditioner and everyday moisturizer that would help me grow my hair? I drink lots of water and take my vitamins but i think I’m missing a good product that will help me grow my hair more.
There is a Lasy named MsVon (Yvonne McCoy) located in Chicago, IL who makes an Excellent Moisturizing Whipped Butter. The website to order is http://www.VonzLocsforLife.com

I have a big bottle of Jojoba oil, shampoo and conditioner and scalp grease, that I bought as a set from Amazing (Amazon). I also use on occasion Argan oil as I read that’s good for Black hair as well. The Argan oil makes my hair soft while the Jojoba oil sometimes dries my hair out. Am I using the oil wrong or should I mix it with a water based conditioner and leave it on say for 15 minutes before rinsing? But I think I will try the Peppermint mixture for a week, just to see if that tingly sensation will kick my problem hair into growth mode. If that will work, then I will keep at it with the natural products and just order from Amazon.
Thank you for the wonderful oils and herbs recommendation. You are beautiful in every single way. Keep up the angel work.

My daughter had hair loss at her temples and the nape of her neck. I am having success with using the peppermint oil and lavender oil in olive oil and water. I think when trying to stop hair breakage you have to find a style that will not cause the tension breakage. We have been using these oils since Sept 2013 and have had a little over an inch of growth in those areas.
You may add few drops of Rosemary oil too.

Hello ladies 🙂 I have only recently started taking care of my hair as I should but still feel I need advice! Specifically on how often you put oils on your hair? I have 3C hair – I think! I am also interested in any suggestions for natural styling products/leave in conditioners etc as I find that the oils make my hair look and feel oily if I attempt to style my hair with them,..by style I mean add moisture so I can get some semblance of control in the morning..I usually just leave my hair out or pin it up but have been using sof ‘n’ free products to tame my curls which defeats the object of natural oils xx
My daughter has 3C (I’m pretty sure) hair and it’s fairly long, middle of her back, and I’ve been making an oil cocktail that I have a bit in a spray bottle with water and then in a little 4oz bottle straight (the cocktail). I haven’t tried the peppermint, rosemary, or lavender yet, but I may do that. Currently my cocktail is olive, coconut, jojoba, and just a few drops of orange oil for scent. I get it throughout her hair best when it’s wet. Or mixing with water and spraying on. I’m going to try mixing it in aloe next. I try to keep her hair in protective styles and only flat iron it 1-2x a year to trim it and even up the length. The rest of the year I just dust her ends as needed. She won’t keep a satin scarf on at night, I’ve tried. But that would help you. And I put the oils on her hair daily and try for a weekly deep conditioning where the oils and deep cond go on as well as the plastic cap and I’ll let her go play outside like that all afternoon (I usually wrap a scarf over the plastic before sending her out). I’ve also put a hand towel soaked and squeezed out with hot water over hear hair and under the plastic cap when I only had an hour or so. I don’t put her hair under a heat dryer. Ever. The only thing I’ve found to keep her ringlets from going frizzy when wearing it natural is a flax seed gel I make myself. I add the oils (except the orange) to the gel and it lasts 3 days w/out refreshing.
I forgot, my base includes castor oil too. ;0)
I make organic soaps and body products so I pretty much have all these ingredients. I just made me a mixture of olive oil, peppermint, rosemary and jojoba oil. Smells so good and it has been an hour since I put it in and my scalp is still tingly. I’m loving it.
I want to try this mixture! How much of each oil should I use?

I mix my essentials with a base of olive, coconut, castor, and jojoba…an even amount of them all. Pure essentials can burn or the smell will aggravate asthma. So add as much of each essential that you’re going to use as you want, start small, and increase based on your nose’s tolerance. That’s how I do it.
Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba) 2%
Amla (Emblica Officinalis) 1%
Rasvanti (Berberis Aristata) 1%
Heena (Lawsonia Alba) 1%
Baheda (Terminalia Belerica) 1%
Brahmi (Centella Asiatica) 1%
Chameli Pan (Jasminum Officinale) 1%
Neem Beej (Azadirachta Indica) 1%
Jatamansi (Nardostachys Jatamansi) 1%
Yashti Madhu (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) 1%

@ U~Niq, very beautiful hair.. Thanks 4 sharing your natural recipe …
Thank you;) !!!
U~niq,
What is the recipe you use? What? And in what amounts? I know I’m late.. 🙂 this post is really old but I’m gonna try something new with my hair and see what happens.
And yes! Your hair is beautiful!
To refresh my scalp, I use a concoction of Organic oils & Aloe Vera juice:
Avocado oil
Lavender oil
Peppermint oil
Rosemary oil
Pure Aloe Vera Juice
I massage it into my scalp nightly, or use it during the day as a refresher. After just a couple weeks of using the refresher mix I noticed I no longer had an itchy scalp, dandruff, or scalp soreness. In addition to all of the other benefits is “Tingling” feeling! I Love the “Tingling” feeling! The tingling indicates my scalp is being stimulated, & that serves as confirmation of growth taking place! All of the above ingredients can be purchased at http://www.vitacost.com

The tingling is from the peppermint oil. I believe its one of the active ingredients in Nioxin, a hair re-growth treatment that I’ve been using (I just use the leave in). I have thin blonde hair. I can’t use oils on it much. But I will add a couple (2-3) drops of tea tree oil to my shampoo when my scalp starts itching and getting flaky, and only for a few days. Unlike yourself, and my daughter, I have to wash daily due to an excessively oily scalp. My daughter is mixed and I have been using a mixture of olive, coconut, jojoba, castor, and a few drops of orange, oils mixed together. I mix it with her rinse out deep conditioner and then apply it daily via rubbing it on my hands then onto her hair. But this way doesn’t seem to get it anywhere but on her outer hair, not the inner hair, near her crown, where her hair is much denser. I think I might try combining it with aloe juice (I’ve never done that) and maybe mixing it with some water? Or can I just use the oils with the aloe and spray that mix in? You have beautiful hair. My daughter gets a lot of breakage at the nape of her scalp and then that crown area has been the bane of my existence since she was a baby. lol
I haven’t tried the oils yet, but would want to try peppermint, burdock, jojoba and aloe.
I started no poo and my hair is oily, still in the transition state.
I just started using an oil mix for my scalp- rosemary, lavender, jojoba, coconut, castor, and olive oil. We’ll see how that goes. I also bought some peppermint oil to soothe my very itchy scalp yesterday. I love the cooling effect and no more itching!
I created the very same mix and added avocado oil to the mix for it’s nutrient and sunscreen properties. I typically use it more I’m the summer because I do less covered protective styles. But I had some left over so I threw it in. Hoping to show some edge growth by next Spring!
Wondering if you can mix some of these together in the olive oil so you’re not massaging all of them into your hair or would that smell funny or not work? I’m curious, or maybe switch up and use some every other day. Thanks for the types i’m def trying to the shampoo because my hair gets a ton of buildup.
I av nt tried it b4 bt i tink i will cos my hair seems nt 2 grow anymore
U shud luk n2 a nuther kebord 2. Your post is lacking correct syntax, punctuation, and proper spelling and use of the English language.
We’re not here 2 judge another persons grammar. No one’s perfect .. Yes even U make errors, so back off.
U r n azz.
Look at the pot calling the kettle black. Smh “u shud luk n2 a nuther kebord” seriously?! Who taught you the English language and spelling?Take what you need from the sight and move on. No need to point grammar out when you obviously have a hard time with it yourself…
you can tell the second comment was being overly sacarstic by responding in a way that mimicked the first poster, then proceeding to type with the correct spelling.
Still unnecessary and mean though.
I guess my comment was just as uneccessary as the post I was commenting on. In my opinion, when you leave ignorant comments like she did then you leave yourself open to critism. As do yourself, I seen nothing wrong with what I said. When you point out someone else’s grammar mistakes and you yourself is not using proper English then you end up looking so foolish. Check yourself before you wreck yourself lmao.
that was really unnecessary
She seems to have an accent of some sort, there are many different dialects and variations on the English language, that doesn’t make someone any less intelligent than you. This is a black hair site btw, not to say everyone isn’t welcome, but it’s probably more likely that she find someone who can relate to her hair woes, dialect and all, than it is you do.
Really confused on why you even felt the need to comment. Guessing out of Boredom but whatever the case we uplift each other on this site so if your not interested in doing that then I would suggest you find another site.
Becky Jennifer Sara or Jill stay off this blog and go bake something please no one asked you and I think I speak for us all when I say WE dgaf ! How’s that for proper grammar?!
@Jenny Terry, Why are “U” even responding to this blog. This is not for “U”. I agree with Mimi your unnecessary comments should have been kept to yourself. Sometimes it’s best to keep your mouth shut if you have nothing good or positive to say.(now in TXT slang- u shud keep ur trap shut, if U cnt be positive cuz rudeness iz nt necess)hopefully you understood both languages. Smdh
Can you type your statement in Urdu, Hindi or Arabic? LMAO
(U shud luk n2 a nuther kebord 2. Your post is lacking correct syntax, punctuation, and proper spelling and use of the English language.)

I am pretty hard on folks using correct spelling/grammar. Although I have a bad habit of using shorthand due to years of working in customer service, I still find it hard to curb my tongue, or my fingers (in typing). However, that being said, I have learned that judging another based on this alone is utterly ridiculous. And although grammar and spelling imperfections may be annoying to you, you should also look at things from the others side. My daughter, highly intelligent, is dysgraphic. She can read anything but can’t write worth a damn (she will not see this post as every small improvement is a milestone for her). As a result of this, I have learned that perfection is not always obtained and that you cannot judge everyone based upon their written grammar alone. You may also have someone that may lack poor verbal communication skills, but that can communicate the written word quite effectively. So rather than judging the one casting judgement, we should pity them as they have not yet learned compassion and patience with those less perfect that they are. IMHO
You are so stupid.. Even “keyboard” you can’t spell it correctly “nuther” is a wrong spelling. You need to go back to elementary school lol
You are not black so i dont think these regimens will work for you so i dont think you should even have your two sense in what she saying anyway. You need Jesus. You will not be blessed fir that. She trying to help someone and you being mean. You need to go to church for jesus to transform your mind. Ima pray for you.
go on your hair /skin colour website and comment.
why the fuck are you on this website, did your black boyfriend tell you to visit so you can learn some real beauty secrets.. ??????
WTH??? People need to chill out seriously….this blog has almost 400 comments and it’s about HAIR GROWTH which can happen to any hair type. It’s obviously been linked all over the internet so get used to comments from new visitors.
This is ridiculous. What’s the point of commenting if no one can understand you? Please read a book
Seriously, how much longer are persons going to post about someone’s lack of properly spelling something? We’re here to share and encourage others in their journey to a healthier crown of hair…., besides; if everyone that complains about the young lady’s writing is soooo perfect then you should be able to understand what she was posting.. I can understand what she was saying, it’s not that hard to, and maybe she wrote that way on purpose. Be more inviting, this is partly why society is as jacked up as it is now…
*Roll eyes* This is the internet. The world of Slang and short cuts. I fail to see what Grammar has to do with hair smh.
on A brighter note, I can’t wait to Try some of these oils. Does anyone have any suggestions for helping your sides and edges to grow back in? l’m getting a small patch and I want my hair back!
Castor oil will help your edges. The purer the better (try yht Jamaican Black Castor oil brand). its thick so try to use only a drop or two nightly. hope this helps
You should try the essential oils mentioned above they really work.
Hi!!!
Good Morning from India !!!
You may try Kesh Vardhak herbal hair drops for your massaging your scalp. For better response you may continue with Kesh Vardhak hair mask & Kesh Vardhak herbal shampoo.
With Regards

Thank you I’ll definitely try that first and see 🙂
Although some people frown against it, emu oil works wonders on edges, hair in general and the skin.
well right now I think my hair is damaged beyond repair!!! every time I wash my hair I loose like a whole handful of hair, I don’t think that’s normal and even while brushing or combing or even running my fingers through my hair causes it to break… its almost as if my hair is breaking from the roots, I’m just thinking about cutting it all off and starting over. Btw my hair is relaxed
You should try using a deep conditioner. Maybe the perm you are using is too much for your hair. How often are you relaxing and when did your hair start falling out. Do you need a trim? Maybe you should go and see a hair stylist or maybe even a doctor, the problem might be beneath your scalp.
Just a quick heads up, if you are allergic to any nut, ie peanut or tree nuts, please do a patch test before applying to your whole head. Most times if you can’t eat it without having a bad reaction you also can’t wear it without having a bad reaction. I learned this the hard way when I got all willy nilly with some coconut oil. Argan oil, shea butter, and jojoba oils are all derived from tree nuts. Please beware.
Has anyone tried ordering JBCO from amazon? Not sure if it is the real thing or not. It is $9.99 and $11.99 for the ones that I want, but the shipping is an additional $9.99. That seems a little steep to me. Any suggestions?
I used to order JBCO online, but then Sally’s started carrying it for 6.99 for 4oz. It’s got grape seed, carrot, and soybean oil as well, but I’m finding that it works just as well as the pure version.
I like this keep it up,i have heard about the cocoanut oil before, but seeing it here again conviences me the more
Hi, I know this is a site for women but as a guy I very much loved this post. I am a 53 year old man that started loosing his hair in his 20s and since I change my diet I have noticed my hair growing back. I found it refreshing to find a post that didn’t just tell you what natural things to use for hair but also how to use them. I will be giving these a try and also my mother will be getting this info because she is worried about hair lose right now also. Thanks!
I have bald spots on both side of my temple. I need to know what products works best for that. Thanks
Burdock root and stinging nettles are new ones for me. My mum has always had essential oils hanging around the house, so for me jojoba and peppermint were always used in my hair. I have found that mustard seed oil mixed with lotus oil and water in a spray bottle strengthen and promote longer lasting moisture without any excess grease.

I went the 100% natural route a year ago and lost nearly 50% of my hair. When it came to detangling my hair natural products did not cut it for me. For the ladies that can do this, that’s great. These days I incorporate natural products into my regimen but I’m not going back to using 100% natural products again. No thanks.
You do make a good point and touching on the point of ancestry my great grandmother is Cherokee Indian black foot tribe and she used tar in alot of her hair products but she always taught each essential must be used to in its own way. With that in mind I asked Services by Le Shell what’s in her products and some of the oils you have listed is in all of her products. Just used in combination with each other. And the lesson she taught to us is your body eats in different ways. She had us do steam soaks with lavender asked her way one day and she said it absorbs into the body to calm and get us ready for bed.
I have been transitioning since March and I just love my new growth, this is an updo that I did today using almond oil and eco styler gel:)

This is cute. Nice job. Tamara
Also has anybody tried Burdock Root Oil? If so is there a major retail store that sells it? I need help. I’m transitioning because my hair is thinning (crowning) and I need something that will grow it back. I really want to avoid taking anything orally, so I would like to try the topical approach.
Hmm, I’ve never tried Burdock Root Oil, but I wonder if you may need to order it online. I see Amazon has it, and the prices seem reasonable: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=burdock+root+oil&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=7562756969&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=19558760101806317886&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_8e84eoffku_e
I’ve never used Burdock Root oil, but Lavender essential oil is good for treating hair loss and Grapeseed and Almond oils stimulate hair growth.
Yes I like Sweet Almond oil too. It’s not greasy or thick; that is one of the things I do not like about products that are on the market.. They seem to heavy. I like lavender too. Try cedarwood, rosemary and lavender. I use Young Living, as well as Mountain Rose Herbs. I used to only use Young Living, but I’d run out too fast. hahahahahha. So, I get the larger bottle from Mountain Rose Herbs and it lasts a long time.
Also, check out the Vitamin Shoppe; I’ve gotten my base oils (jojoba, apricot kernel, sweet almond, grapeseed, etc.) from there and they just may have it. Argan oil is good for the hair and skin as well, but it is pricey. It’s worth it, though. Tamara
Qhemet biological sells burdock root. Good stuff.
I agree with SandraEvadne. I tried using Aloe Vera on my hair and scalp. At first I loved it, until I realized that I couldn’t get it out!! Regardless to how much washing I did there was this white film on my hair. After I stopped using it, there was a long period of time before it was completely out of my hair. I would love to go back to using it again, but someone would have to tell what shampoo to use to get it out.
I personally use Aloe Vera as a daily moisturizer. I found a recipe somewhere. Bought Aloe Vera on a Latin grocery store, took the gel out, put it on a blender with some water, then strained that mix with a piece of cloth, and poured a few drops of lavender essential oil on it. Need to be on the refrigerator after use, cuz it goes bad if you leave it outside. Doesn’t leave any white trace, at least not on my hair. I use it as a leave in conditioner, so no need to wash it after putting on your hair. (and of course you can save all that work of getting your on Aloe Vera gel by buying an already made one, but I prefer the do it yourself way).
Maybe it’s the combination of lavender oil, and diluting it with water, that prevents that from happening. Thanks, I’ll give that a try, because I really liked the way it made my hair feel.
Hi Karyn. I have found when I treat my hair with any kind of oil, it helps if I work the shampoo directly into my hair before I actually make it wet. So first work up a great foam, make sure you do your whole head and then you add the water, then rinse. The oil washes out easily because the shampoo breaks up the oil. Good luck.
Hi there just read your info and i think i may be going a bit wrong.
I added 2 table spoon of Rosmerry oil, peppermint oil and caster oil in a spray bottle and sprayed my hair with it yesterday. Is this measurement to strong? The peppermint smell although not unpleasent is quite strong smelling I did intend to use it everyday after mosturizing with shea butter mixed with coconut oil and almond oil. Please advise.
I hav a natural black afro hair it is not thick but it is soft.
Thank you
Something I am learning is that we have to do some trial and error when it comes to blending essential oils with base oils. Less is always best; try making a mixture with a few drops of lavender and take it from there. Peppermint smells good, but too much makes me nauseous. Also, have you tried coconut oil? It’s pretty good in the hair and on the skin. Tamara
We use a blend of organic coconut oil, lavender, rosemary, and tea tree in both our hair and skin moisturizers. It is all about the ratios in the blends.
Your ratio of essential oil to carrier oil is 2:1 which is too high. You should never have more essential oil than carrier. This can cause serious problems. See the authors directions for peppermint oil above. 3 drops to 3 Tbsp. I would suggest doing some research before using essential oils.
I use almost all of these in some capacity in my line or personally. My scalp loves my Flake Out Creme with peppermint and rosemary!

I tried out that mix you had for the shampoo. I’m finding it hard to wash it out and I think its because of the aloe vera. How do I get it out of my hair?
Aloe vera is difficult to rinse out because its so sticky that it coats the hair. Rinse with an apple cider vinegar (75%) and 25% water. Let it sit for 5mins before rinsing, but afterwards, you’ll need to immediately give your hair a really good conditioning to restore moisture. The cider rinse will strip it of any buildup! However, aloe vera is still an extremely great natural ingredient for the hair. I use it right before my sauna days in the gym. The heat loosens the aloe and makes it less sticky, therefore, better penetration to hair shaft. The aloe vera leaves can be purchased at Whole Foods, Publix…thats about as natural as it gets! And they’re edible as well…i mix them in with smoothies….

Hey! Someone in my Myspace group shared this site with us so I came to check it out. I’m definitely enjoying the information. I’m book-marking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Fantastic blog and outstanding style and design.
I use this mix that I found on several sites rosemary & lavender, cedarwood & thyme with grapeseed & jojoba carrier oils. Here’s the recipe site http://www.blackhairinformation.com/growth/hair-problems/regrowing-thin-edges-and-bald-spots-caused-by-alopecia-with-essential-oils/
I was having problems with a thinning & breaking nape & went to a derm in Jan 2012 & had steroid cream & shots. It started filling in but then started falling out & breaking again last winter after the treatment ended. I also had an extremely stressful teaching year which caused my temples to start thinning. I started using Super Potent JBCO ordered from Amazon & the hair started growing in. Then I heard about this EO mix in April & added that to my night regimen. Since then ALL thin spots have started filling in wonderfully.
This is great. Thank you for sharing. Tamara
Have you tried Le Shell’s products? Me and my mom did and after a month my mom’s bald spot almost completely filled in. After 10 days my edges came in and after a full month my edges grew 2 inches. Besides its all natural I used the hydration system in my daughters hair and no more crying when I do her hair with a lot less breakage. I ordered it @ http://www.CLbyL.info under hair juice. After I sent her our results she asked us to be models. From personal experience at least try it.
I was wondering did you order the Hair Juice or the Hair Juice Grease
WHat is an EO mix?
An “EO” mix is a mixture of essential oils and base oils (e.g., jojoba oil, coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil, etc.)
You made some good points there. I looked on the net to learn more about the issue and found most people will go along with your views on this site.
For those who do not have the time to prepare these herbal concoctions, Just4Kinks includes ALL of these herbs and more in their hair care line. The products are phenomenal if you truly want to retain length.
So, how about making it simple for readers: Make a list that tells readers where exactly to purchase all these oils, vitamins, etc etc… How to use it al is great, but where to get all these is the key because we need to purchase them in order to follow the processes…. Right? Thank you.
each ingredient (oils, vitamins, etc) has his own link to amazon where you can order it. the rest is up to you.
@ Julieness, the article states a person can purchase the olis at a drug store of herbal store. Try Trader Joe’s or a Wholefoods store. Of course, you can always purchase it online.
If you can access this article, you can also use Google to find out where these oils are sold near you or which websites you could purchase them at.
I just started wearing my hair naturally a year ago but it’s not growing so honestly if I use these tips you suggested will my hair grow it’s shoulder length already but I still wear sew-ins sometimes when I can’t find something to do to my hair I just want to be more proud to wear it I mean I’m proud of my hair but yours look amazing I’ve got multiple ethnic backgrounds in my blood my mom is half black &Japanese and my dad’s half afro-cuban& columbian & I ended up with the curly Afro that frizzies a lot I just want to tame the frizz &get it healthy. Thanx
I LOVE your HAIR! 🙂
Ive been using coconut oil and avocado oil and my hair is so straight and strong feeling! And theresa lot less breakage 😀
Has anyone tried mixing all of these together and using the product? I want to try that, is that bad to do?
Stinging nettle above ground parts are used along with large amounts of fluids in so-called “irrigation therapy” for urinary tract infections (UTI), urinary tract inflammation, and kidney stones (nephrolithiasis). The above-ground parts are also used for allergies, hayfever, and osteoarthritis….”..

For a considerable length of time I had been so acclimated to my hair feeling oily from hair regrowth treatment the mineral oil based items that it took me a while to truly comprehend what my hair felt like with common oils.
For years I had been so accustomed to my hair feeling greasy from the mineral hair regrowth treatment oil based products that it took me a while to really understand what my hair felt like with natural oils.

Its like women and men are not interested until it’s one thing to do with Woman gaga!
Hi, thanks for your much appreciated and needed advice. Wanted to know if I could just mix a few of the oils in a bottle instead of using them individually?
Thanks
Wow she left some great tips
hey how to we have to use em and should i have to stop braids?
What i don’t understood is in fact how you are no longer actually much more neatly-appreciated than you may be right now. You are so intelligent. You realize thus considerably on the subject of this subject, made me in my opinion consider it from so many various angles. Its like women and men are not interested until it’s one thing to do with Woman gaga! Your individual stuffs excellent. I have been using now for almost a year anaqah natural beauty products namely their hair cream.
Dentist Glasgow
Hi
I started my natural hair growth journey a few years ago and used natural oils ( coconut, jojoba, and castor oil)
I came across Shea butter and cocoa butter too since I have ” English hair” oils make me look greasy so I fell in love with Shea butter 🙂 I habe been using now for almost a year anaqah natural beauty products namely their hair cream a Somalian friend of mine got me onto them I love their hair cream and hair mask. Sadly I cant find many people online who use their products :s they have a site and sell on eBay
These tips sound amazing!I’m glad there are still people who don’t think you need a weave on your head to look have “nice” hair. I encourage everyone to go natural! 🙂 It’s beautiful!!! 🙂
I truly agree becoming natural is a beautiful thing ! I’m new to the Natural word myself and I must say the journey I’m about to explore feels so stinking great !!!
Hi unique I use this stuff…
http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=230983450267
Sorry I’m searching from my phone 😉
They also have a natural hair growth cream that makes your hair grow really fast like steroids
Hi, well i have tried to grow my hair for a while and noticed that some products work and some dont they are just a scam
best way is to do the few tips, eat healthy, and find a good natural hair growth method.
I now use only natural products and NO chemicals at all, I use a natural hair growth cream and root stimulator from Anaqah natural beauty products and this has worked well for me.my hair grows just over a inch a month and im very happy i made the transition
Hi if I dont wash the oils out and use them daily on my hair is that bad? What is I just massage them in my hair and leave it in daily without washing the lavendar, jojoboa and rosemary out until once a week when I normally wash my hair which is on Sunday.
This sounds amazing! My boyfriend has some hair loss that he feels uncomfortable about. But it’s not that his hair is gone from those areas, it just grows at a considerably slower rate from the rest of his head.
Do you think if I combined the jojoba, peppermint, aloe vera and lavender oils together it would be okay for him to spray on and try? Or should they not be mixed together?
Hi, I have a 13 yr old daughter who has been in/out of braids. She craves to have hair length beyond her neck. My wife believes if she get’s a weave over the summer with her hair braided up, her hair will grow out in 2 months. As husband/dad I’m looking for some input here. I don’t want my daughter believing that at 13 yrs old weaves are ok. There have been issues with her braids as it is causing her hair to be dry and break on the ends. Again I’d just like to hear some feedback on this issue. Are their products which I can ask my wife to get which will help in the natural hair growth process? Appreciate your reply. Be safe and blessed thanks again.
J
Hi J, 1st a weave won’t make a difference in growth but it is a protective style. 2nd braids would be better because she can still get to her scalp. Now coconut oil is a GREAT moisturizer, mix in some Jamaican black castor oil. Use this as often as needed. She should also co-wash her hair weekly. She can also use a lavender rinse to keep scalp clean& clear while braids are in. ( a few sprigs of fresh lavender & boiled water let cool & pour over scalp. Save left-overs for not use) I hope this helps u guys
Hi J:
I don’t think weaves is the answer. It is more of a protective style… is her hair natural? If so wet set are good, natural twist/braids or maybe some wash and gos for styles vice the weaves. Weaves can get expensive and if her hair is breaking, that needs to be addressed asap!
I am learning it is more technique than products. The L.O.C. METHOD WORKS for some and some deep conditioners and protein treatments. At 13, she has a LOT OF time to learn what her hair can or cannot do and what products the hair likes. JBCO HAS HELED ME along with Jane Carter products and Qhemet Biologics. Try some YouTube tutorials type in Naptural85 and Mahogany Vloggers for starters. I hope this helps…
Hello you lucky dark haired, naturally curly beauties! I have thin fine long very oily blonde hair. It’s stick straight and snarls easily and breaks easily. I started using “Wen” products 5 yrs ago. The moisturizing shampoo is fabulous and full of natural oils (I use the peppermint), with absolutely no sulfate’s & is au-naturalle. Your curly black natural hair would love this stuff, no kidding! Mine has no tangles, or fly-away’s now. It wide tooth combs out like butter straight out of the shower! It does not strip your hair of it’s own natural oils. You leave some of the shampoo in your hair, as a leave in conditioner. Dry naturally. I also use grape seed oil, argan oil or coconut oil on the very ends as a leave in too. There are also leave in hair masques and other products in this line that I have not tried, but it gets rave reviews.
Last winter, I had a major hair fall out. I mean major! I got my thyroid checked (it was ok) so I looked for a supplement to promote hair growth. I got some “Viviscal” and started using it, and voilla! Apparently it was exactly what I needed. I noticed after @ 1-1/2 months my hair stopped falling out and was growing much faster. I found the Vivscal in Rite Aid, Walgreens,or CVS but it’s not cheap $40 for 3 month supply. Now I’m down to taking it once a day (you do this after 3 months) and the difference I’m seeing is amazing. So try the Wen, you won’t be disappointed. There is a learning curve to figure out how to use it. I’ll give you some hints:
Hair must be VERY wet.
Use enough product to feel like it’s creamy all over. Leave it in for a few minutes prior to rinsing.
Rinse, rinse, and rinse some more! Then after squeezing water out of hair, use 1 squirt, rub in hands and apply throughout hair avoiding the root area by about an inch. Wide tooth comb carefully, hair into loose twisted towel, then air dry and enjoy!
I was able to purchase WEN conditioner at a resale store and I didn’t notice any difference in my hair. I hate that I have become a product junkie, but with every query about black hair products, there seems to be a different answer and product suggestion. I am now trying a JBCO, coconut oil, castor oil shea butter combination. I am also using Hair Rules shampoo and I will be using Shea Moisture products soon-like I said I have purchase too many hair products this year. A good book to read is Curly Nikki’s latest book. She list a lot of products at the end of the book.
@ Gibsongurl…most naturals go through a learning curve. Maybe about a year or two they start to figure out what products and mainly what techniques work for them and which don’t. That is part of the learning process. I am using the L.O.C. Method along with Jane Carter and Qhement Biologics products….awesome! I am not a big fan of shampoos only once a month maybe…deep condtioners and use ACV with the mother to clarify…. You have to find what works for YOU. YouTube is a good start but again YOU must find what works for you..have a HHJ:)
I must say these oils are very useful.
Excellent article. I’m proud women are finally getting into natural hair care.
I too, am learning just how great being natural can be for both hair and skin! It’s wonderful being “All Natural”!! 🙂
Black African Soap and Rosemary oil are the best together.
Jay, explain what is the African black soap and Rosemary good for exactly?
I have to girls. One with spongy sandy brown hair, its thin. Her hair seems like it just started getting shorter & shorter. My other girl has even thinner softer curly hair. Her hair is also breaking off. There edges have always been shorter. I clipped there ends & I’ve been using Lanol Luster for yrs. Idk what to do to help there hair grow. HELP ME PLEASE lbs
My sister and I are 100% natural. I had some of the same issues, especially the thinning hairline, although mine was mainly the temples. We even let our former beautician talk us into trying a keratin blowout and our hair started falling out. After that my sister, the biologist, began research to create truly 100% natural hair and skin products. Our products use many of the essential oils mentioned in this article. They are all made fresh with no preservatives, petroleums, or chemicals. We have been using them exclusively for the past year and had amazing results. Everyone that has tried it loves it so we have been asked to make it available for sale so that’s what we are doing.. The brand is called My Sisters’ Natural. It should be available for purchase in a month. We do have a coming soon placeholder website at http://www.mysistersnatural.com where you can contact us.
I understand you’re wanting to promote your products, but to continuously put them under every comment is ridiculous. I was interested in trying, but I feel you’re trying to shove your products down our throats! Not a good thing!!
Hello… I have a big problem.bc my hair was thinning at the top of my head I decided to go natural.. thinkin that the spot would grow back thick like the rest of my head… I only used natual products with DHT blockers… it did help a little, but I still notice it.. I’m so self conconcious that other will notice it tooo.. that I can’t enjoy my natural look.. PLEASE HELP..
Try JBCO perhaps some YouTube videos and your own research too.
While you are working on ways to stimulate hair growth, try to use a hair filler (X-Fusion) to hide the thin spots. This does in NO WAY fix the bald spots, but it will ease your un-easiness about looking so thin while you undergo treatments.
I had natural for all my life until 2 years ago my hair was all the way down my back and after the perm it started to break off badly and i cut it and now it’s super short to me and im starting highschool in 4 months and i wanted to promote my hair growth to 2 inches a month so it will grow at least 4-6 inches to impress me before highschool so will this all actually help???
Good for you and please focus on HHJ VICE LONG HAIR…no use in having WLH (waste length hair) or to your knees if it isn’t healthy and strong.
i have been trying to grow my hair ever since i was young but nothing seem to work,i’m now 29 years old with a scarry hair.its braking , my hair line is gone . Please help.
Are you transitioning, natural, OR relaxed? Did you look at the article about the oils? Castor oil is a good oil too. You can check YouTube and other natural hair sites.

I can’t wait for your products to be available to the public, I am new to the natural journey and I need some products that will help make this journey a pleasant one.
Connie,
Feel free to contact us at ms*@**************al.com and leave your contact information. We will email you when it’s available to purchase.
Thanks!
Try Qhemet Biologics too! It may save you from being a product junkie like me.
Im going to try all these
Actually I notice that my hair is different since the chopping because before chopping it used to love mineral oil. After that it acts so werid and dry up as crazy if I put on something chemical. I know it because the first day when I had Mane and Tail conditioner . It is chocked filled of chemical but I tried it anyway, one second of handful cowash on my hair–it was like dry shrunk! I stopped using it. I tried seeing if it was only it or stuffs with chemical. I tried other with chemical at store, I can’t recall. It still shrunk dry and acted crazy! I was like that is it “I know it is chemical that hair hates” so from now on I use natural, my hair become more moisturzing and love it.
Guess what? I am half Indian lol…. I told ma I know why it is acting crazy. Native America used told me the same thing to not use mineral oil but natural.
Everytime natural product I use , claim to be “99% organic” lying and get my hair acting crazy. I will know it and I will stop using it.
Adrienne,
My sister and I are 100% natural. We suffered similar issues and even let our former beautician talk us into trying a keratin blowout and our hair REALLY started falling out. Wow, this sounds awesome, I have a client who is a cancer survived and her hair is growing back, but patchy so I am looking for purely natural hair growth treatments to help her process! Very interested in your product as I am trying to bring back the NATURAL 🙂
Thank you so much for your interest in our products. We have a close family member who is also a cancer survivor. Our mother also suffered hair loss due to medications. They have been using our products and have had fabulous results. We know there are a lot of people with health conditions that cause hair loss. This is one of the reasons our products are 100% natural and free of chemicals and all of our ingredients are 100% pure, 100% natural, and most are certified organic. We would never expose people to chemicals. Our products will be available next month. Our website is http://www.mysistersnatural.com. We have a placeholder there so people can contact us and leave their contact information to be added to our launch notification list.
How are you protecting and sealing? How are you protecting it at night? Wrap her hair for bed or get her satin or silk pillow case. Also, seal the moisture in her hair.
Ok thank you!
This is my 10 year old daughters hair… I love her natural hair.. I use Jane Carter products along with natural products such as aloes and coconut oil … Lately I’ve noticed that her ends are breaking off and I’m not sure why!.. I use the stretching method and haven’t used the blow dryer in 2 months!.. Her ends get extremely dry so I just get a spritz bottle and spray it!.. Can u help give me a regimen , because her hair seems to be dropping instead of growing and it has no chemicals in it!.. Please help!.. Thanks

You can try castor oil for sealing her ends and it may be time for a trim.:)
Hi Dannie! Have you thought about using henna to make her hair stronger? I have used henna only twice in my natural hair journey, but it has made a huge difference in the strength of my hair, as well as its ability to retain moisture. Consider trimming half an inch from her ends, and trying the henna. It’s only $5 a box on eBay. After washing her hair, add a bit of conditioner to her damp hair as a leave in, and then rub some raw shea butter in your hands to soften it, and smooth it through her hair with the conditioner, and put her hair in 4-6 braids to dry. Adding a little shea butter to her hair daily, and keeping it in protective styles like braids and buns will certainly help with moisture retention.
Good luck, Arielle!
Hi Arièlle ,
Thank you so much for the tip!.. I trimmed her ends and sealed it with castor oil and it certainly does look different!.. I’m gonna get the henna and Shea butter and see how that works!!..
I have been using coconut oil can I speed up my hair growth with these oils
Wow! I have a lot to learn! I have peppermint oil and Jojoba oils…etc…nice post!
4. Lavender Oil/Lavender Water
“Use the lavender infused oil as a daily scalp massage. Apply and leave on overnight. In the morning, wash hair with a gentle organic shampoo and style as usual.”
Can someone clarify the statement referenced above? This oil infusion should not be left in your hair. Should I do a daily massage at night and then wash it out in the morning? I get the sense the author is given readers two options. The other questions are whether or not ethnic hair should be washed daily? Does this regimen strip the hair of its natural oils?
Just wondering…
I re read the article, and it is best to do what you think is best for your own hair. Try it and see if it works, if not try something else.
Has anyone done the aloe, wheat germ oil, coconut milk shampoo? What were your results cause my results was it was very hard to rinse out. I had to wash it out? Pls help.
WHAT A BOUT MACADAMIA OIL?????
I think a lot of people don’t realise that many of their problems begin with the shampoos they use. Many people are so sensitive to the chemicals in these products. If they can use a base shampoo with a few drops of an essential oil in it, then once the hair is dry use a hair oil that is appropriate for their hair condition and hair type.I have thick, curly hair so a medium, heavy oil works for me but every ones hair type is different so a little research is a good idea.
Disregard the emailing part…i didnt realize your post would automatically be emailed to me
I love the information that was given but how do I use them…like I would need a regimen…I like my one year of the Big Crop & my hair grew a lot & I would love to follow your ideas but I need help figure out how to use these ingredients….i would appreciate yoy not only responding to this post but emailing me as well….please…

I’m still struggling with finding the right product….my hair seems extremely dry, especially after washing. Thank all of u who post info to help ppl like me. 🙂 I should hv tapped into these resources early on. So…I don’t cry AS MUCH on hair wash days, but pls send moisturizing products that work for you…. Thx Sistahs! Luv y’all!

I wanted to cut my hair short at first but now I really want to grow it out. So far I’ve been using Jojoba shampoo and conditioner (which you can find on my website) and also some coconut oil. Works wonders!
I would like to know what I can use to grow my edges back I have tried everything and I will not give up because I know someone out there will have a solution for this small problem I am having I have been natural for a years and I am loving it and Be Blessed
Oils are very important for hair growth. Especially when dealing with dry hair, not everyone can use the same oils due to differences in texture and amount of hair. I have tried many many, and so far jojoba oil seems to be my fav! Hair vitamins are great if you can’t use oils. The right hair vitamins will have vitamins and proteins in the ingredient lists, if you want hair to actually grow. I did find Fast Grow hair oil which has jojoba in it 🙂 have any of you used it? http://www.exoticallure.com/black-hair-tips/5-Reasons-to-Use-Fast-Grow-Hair-Oil.htm

Take MSM (Google it)! It truly works!!!
Marissa have you tried doing vigorous scalp massages every night? Do you have time to put the oil on once a week and wash it out in the morning?
Hi Tamara. Have you tried burdock root oil? How does it compare to cedarwood oil? Do you know where I can find it? Thanks!
Hi Dee, I have not tried Burdock Root Oil. I have read that it helps with dry scalp, and it encourages hair growth. I am not sure where you can find it, but you may want to check with a natural foods store, i.e. Whole Foods. Let me know if you find it. Thanks. Tamara
Go to Mountainroseherbs.com this place has almost every herb on earth lol. Good luck! Thanks for this post too. Ive put my lavendar and olive oil away….
Thanks; I found it at floraleads.com.

HI, TAMARA I USE TO GET MY HAIR PERMED ALL THE TIME AND IT STARTED TO COME OUT. NOW THE ONLY THING THAT SEEM TO GROW MY HAIR BACK AND IT IS A SLOW PROCESS IS THE JERI-CURL. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THEIR IS ANY THING ELSE I CAN DO. ALSO I AM ON HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE PILLS.
My mom has been praying over my sister and I hair from since when we were little girls. I now pray over my hair when I do it and by the full and wonderful grace of GOD I always have long, full, and thick hair. And so does my sister. We are both 4b and some 4c. So I know the power of prayer.
Yes, yes, yes. The power of prayers and the BELIEF in those prayers are amazing! You see results and you learn to rely on your own spiritual truth as a guide to well health and healing. Tamara 🙂
Thank you. Amazing, I pray over most things that concern me, but I never even thought about asking God’s help in caring for my hair. I also have 4c hair and have been natural for 20 years, but my hair has never grown to more than shoulder length. Thanks for reminding me that the Lord cares for even the hairs on our head and that we can always seek His help with anything.
May God bless you and your family.
You are truly a Beautiful Black Lady
Nice post!

Hi LC, Cedarwood essential oil may help. I get my oils from Young Living, http://www.youngliving.com. Let me know if you’d like to order it. Tamara 🙂
Hi, just wanted to let you all know that “intention” is powerful when you are ready to re-balance certain areas of your life that need to be addressed and re-balanced. For example, on this blog, many of you have mentioned that you desire for your hair to grow full and healthy. Essential oils are wonderful and powerful, and they become even more powerful when you put the intention (for your hair to grow full and healthy) behind the action of applying the oils to your hair scalp. Some people are comfortable with prayer and feel great results when they pray, so if prayer works for you, then pray while you are applying these oils to your hair and believe that your prayers are answered. We really have the answers to all of our maladies and all that we need to do is focus on the end result and know that it will happen. Blessings and Love, Tamara 🙂
Or not focus so much at all, then one day you will notice your hair has actually grown. Hair grows about a centimeter a month. That’s 6 inches a year. Keep hair moisturized, trim when needed, and don’t flatiron or style so often and your hair will grow before you know it. Also less is more. I use to use gel and other unnecessary items then I noticed my curl pattern did the same with my organic hair wash and shea butter. I didn’t need gel. Keep it simple. The less chemicals the better. My hair did fine without gel, shampoo, or conditioner. Try terresentials organic hair wash in lavender and use shea mixed with whatever oils you prefer as a moisturizer and you will notice that your hair will be fine without all the unnecessary styling products. Good Luck everyone! 🙂 Btw, wear some twists every now and then protective styling can be your friend and give you a break. It helps when your hair is shorter! Your hair wont rub against your neck or shirt/collar etc. causing breakage. Also, know that if you have a lot of shrinkage like me, your hair may just appear shorter! 🙂 The shrinkage made me want longer hair, but I was surprised at the length when I stretched some strands.
I recently did the BC and I thought I wasn’t able to do any protective styles. As I’m discovering and learning new and wonderful things about my hair, I’ve notice shrinkage is actually a protective style. : )
This is me with shrinkage. I don’t know why pic is uploading sideways.

Thanks for sharing helpful hints to establishing healthy hair. I have worn locks for six years, and now I am have decided to wear my hair out natural.
Hello, My son is five and he hairline is very thin but the rest of his hair is thick. It seems as if he is bald on both sides. What should I use to help him, if there is anything?
Hi Angela, all of the essential oils mentioned above (Cedarwood, Lavender, and Rosemary) are gently for children, but you can start off using Lavender on his scalp and see how that works. You can apply Lavender directly to his scalp and gently massage it into the areas that need attention. You can also add one drop of Cedarwood to, let’s say, three drops of Lavender, and massage it into his scalp. These oils are safe for the entire family. If you’d like to add some moisture, add some Jojoba or Coconut oil to the drops and massage this mixture into his scalp. I prefer to use Young Living essential oils because they are pure and you only need to use a few drops in order to get the job done. If you’d like to order these oils, feel free to visit http://www.youngliving.com, and then enter Sponsor Number 1376842 when you are ready to place your order. Please let me know if you have additional questions. I am putting together a newsletter in which I will be sharing how essential oils can help re-balance our bodies in safe and effective ways. If you’d like to receive this newsletter, please feel free to contact me as ms**********@***il.com. Thank you so much. Tamara

That is my sponsor ID number. I prefer Young Living’s oils because they are pure and effective. All essential oils are not created the same. Will these products work if your hair is not “natural?”
Yes. They will work. Just apply one or two drops of the essential oil onto your hair. The essential oil will not damage your hair or body. Young Living essential oils are potent yet gentle. But if you are unsure, start off with a little and just pay attention to how your hair responds to it. Tamara
Hi tamara.am goin to start a combo of rosemary and castor oil for good healthy growth of hair.

i had been havin alit of hairfall earluer but its in control nw.. though i want good thick hair nw
Hi Riddhima, yes. That sounds like a good plan. But don’t use too much castor oil as it may make your hair heavy and limp. I found this article which may be helpful to you. http://www.curlynikki.com/2011/11/castor-oil-for-healthy-hair.html?m=1
Tamara
I have thin edges from wearing weaves and perms for years. My hair has always been thin, but it is worse now.
What products should I use to thicken and grow my hair?

Ann, also get regular hot oil treatments. Tamara
Hi Everyone, a good detox may help also. Because our bodies are full of toxins, we may start experiencing imbalances that show themselves on the outside of our bodies, i.e., hair falling out, acne, weight gain, etc. Imbalances also manifest themselves on the inside of our bodies, i.e., cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. A good detox will put you on the right track to restoring balance to your body and the proper healing will take place with some time. Tamara
Hi Tamera,
Just found your site. Can you give me youngs website to order some oils? I was thinking of getting Basil oil, Tea Tree oil , Peppermint oil and Rosemary. The back of my nape fell out like 2 inches up going over 5 years now and my hair is dry. I am currently sparying it with vegetable glycerine and water mix to keep it moisturize. My hair is 4c and its very kinky. I am also using black castor oil, Help.
Hi Kimoni, absolutely! The website is youngliving.com and my sponsor number is 1376842. You will need to enter the my sponsor ID so that they will know that I referred you to them.
Kimoni, try using pure organic coconut oil. It is a beautiful moisturizer.
Also get Cedarwood. It will help your hair grow.
I had cancer and the chemotherapy made all of my hair fall out. It is growing back a little, but it is very thin in the top and sides. What can I use to help it grow thicker and longer.
Hi Annie, Cedarwood Essential Oil. I prefer Young Living Essential Oils because their oils consistently work. Please feel free to email me at ms**********@***il.com. I am pulling together some information for Nell (commenter above) and I will be more than happy to share that information with you as well. I am not sure if I can post my findings here, so I’d rather email it to those who request it. Blessings, Tamara
Tamara I found that with the aloe coconut milk and wheat germ it didn’t rinse out easily why?
Hi Annie, I just found out that a product called “Sulfurzyme” may help with your hair growth. Here is the link for the product if you’d like to check it out: http://www.youngliving.com/natural-health-supplements/Sulferzyme-Capsules.
I can dig up more information on it, if you’d like.

I am taking bp meds and my hair is also having a little shed. What can I use to moisturize it and also use for growth and thickness? PLease help me thank you 🙂
-cassidy
Coconut oil is good for moisture & Rosemary, cedarwood or wheat germ oil are all good for growth
Yes, Peppermint also stimulates hair follicles, but make sure the Peppermint is diluted in something before applying it to your scalp. It may tingle.
do i mix all those in a bowl and use it as a mask or a creme for my hair ?
Hi Cassidy, you can do both. Tamara

Also which wheat germ should I purchase? Please help
Hi Jakeria, Mountain Rose Herbs has a great wheat germ oil. Here is the link: http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/bulkoil/s-z.php#osz_wg
I also like coconut oil and argan oil in my hair. It helps is stay moisturized, soft and shiny.
Hi I was wondering which oil is the best for hair growth? Which is more likely to work best !
Hi Jakeria, Cedarwood is known for growing hair. I’ve also read that Lavender helps your hair grow too. There are many essential oils on the market, but I prefer to use Young Living because it works and the results are consistent. If you’d like more information, email me at ms**********@***il.com, and I’ll email some testimonials to you. Thanks. Tamara
Thanks for the ideas shared on the blog. Yet another thing I would like to state is that weight-loss is not supposed to be about going on a celebrity diet and trying to shed as much weight that you can in a set period of time. The most effective way to shed weight is by consuming it bit by bit and using some basic ideas which can provide help to make the most from a attempt to lose fat. You may know and be following most of these tips, although reinforcing expertise never affects.
I had notice my hair thinning just in the front and I came across this site, so I went a purchase some peppermint oil and applied to my scalp. I’m wonder do I need to add something else.
Hi Nell, Cedarwood essential oil is good for restoring hair growth, especially around your edges. I use Young Living essential oils because I’ve had excellent results with them. I can give you more information if you’d like. Herbs and oils are excellent products to use in order to restore balance in the body. Tamara 🙂
Yes, I would like more information 🙂
Hi Nell, send me an email at ms**********@***il.com. I have some information that I can email to you about different herbs and essential oils can help you with your hair. Tamara
I have tried many products trying to get my hair back in shape, It is very dry and brittle with bald spots. Please tell me where I can purchase the lavender, cedarwood and rosemary oil. Thanks..

You must be making money….you’re doing an awful lot of promoting Young Life….SURELY they’re not the only place in the world that distributes or sells essential oils!?!?
Yes, there are other brands that have great essential oils too. Do your research and see which ones you prefer.
Hi Sandra, did you cut the dead parts off? You may have to cut the dead hair off and then start from scratch again. There are many oil and herbs that can help you get your hair back to the way it used to be. Tamara
I use to have to have great thick long natural hair. Then I died it and it fell out. I’m in the process of trying to return back to that long thickness I once had. I’m lookin for the most simply process but also a great product that will lead me to my thick hair!! Can you help please
Hello, I told my friend I would do some research for him because he noticed that he has started balding. I know your page is for black females but can these oils work for him as well?? I’m thinking the Burdock, Saw Palmetto, and Stinging Nettle might be what will work best. Either together or as some sort of regimen. What do you think??
Hi Angee, look into the Cedarwood essential oil as well. If his hair folicles are blocked, the Cedarwood will unblock them. Let me see if there are any other essential oils for balding. Tamara
Hi Angee, I just looked at http://www.oil-testimonials.com, and found a recipe for balding hair. Here is the link: http://www.oil-testimonials.com/essential-oils/2847/once-was-bald-but-now-there-is-hair. This person did a body cleanse, and then used lavender, cedarwood and rosemary essential oils and applied them to his scalp. His hair started growing back. I prefer Young Living’s essential oils because the results are consistent and they work. Tamara Kelly
Thanks so much!
You’re welcomed. I am passionate about using herbs and essential oils to help us balance out our minds, spirits and bodies. Let me know if you have more questions. Tamara
Hi Tamera think you r cute wanna chat wit me
hi I’m a diabetic I take Humalog and and lantus and I would like to know if jojoba oils would be good for my hair because it seems to be the easiest or can you suggest something .
I would like to know if I can get all these herbs in one solution or do I have to purchase each of them. Where can I find them?
Thanks
Veronica, you will have to buy them separately. I don’t know if there is one particular product that has all of these herbs/oils in them. I am playing around with them and am making my own blends. If you want to buy the herbs, you can check out Mountain Rose Herbs, http://www.mountainroseherbs.com. They have a nice selection of dried herbs. You can also check with a local natural foods store, as they may have some dried herbs in stock. I usually get my essential oils from Young Living because they are potent and the results are consistent. Let me know if you’d like to hear more. I am passionate about essential oils because they are natural and they work. Tamara
Hi Tamara I have never tried natural products and I want to make sure I do this right and my hair is actually clean… Where do I start?
Hi Tamara,
I am just getting into essential oils and I would like to know if Young Living has a website.
Hi Donnetta, yes, Young Living’s website is http://www.youngliving.com. Please let me know if you are looking for a particular essential oil. I will find the link and post it here. Thank you so much. Tamara 🙂
Is the wheat germ for the natural shampoo wheat germ oil or the dry wheat germ?
Thanks!
My hair serum consist of Jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, Vitamin E, and Moroccan oil. Will add that wheat germ did wonders for my fragile edges. Use wheat germ primarily on edges and thinning areas only because it’s THICK! And wonderful… gotta try various oils and seek out what works for you!
4 months natural and loving it! Good luck!
I am on high blood pressure medicine and noticed my hair breaking and thinning. This is a side effect. Will any of these oils help me?
Yes. These essential oils will help. Cedarwood is excellent too! Let me know if you’d like to purchase these oils. Pure Argan Oil is good too. Tamara
I am a 21 Year old black guy with thinning hair. Which of these products will help me grow my hair back and prevent me from going bald?
My question is what can I use to make my hair soft and shiny. My hair is thick, course and sometimes break combs in my hair.
Hi, you dcan make a vegetable glycerin mix(20% glycerin,70% water,10% grape seed oil& about 10 drops of peppermint oil essential, you can also add a few drops of rosemary oil to promote grow. BE CAREFUL WITH ROSEMARY VERY STRONG SMELL) MIX IN THAT ORDER, IT BLEND BETTER. SHAKE BEFORE EVERY USE.Spitz before combing & before bed. You can also pre-poo. This works for me. GOOD LUCK
just wanted to know if any one had any tips to help with moisutizing natural hair while wearing braided extensions.. this would really hepl a lot!!!1
Ola!
Ive been wearing braids for about a year now–and I take them out every 2-3 months. I notice that the key to keeping my hair moisturized is to start by braiding my own hair slathered in some sort of base. (Ive been using shea butter and eco styler gel) I then spritz it every day and night with with my braid spray….but its a concoction I made up on a whim. I mixed good old braid spray with sweet almond oil, argon oil and a little curl activator (ya know what we use to use on our jerry curls back in the day). Make sure to spray your hair from the roots to the ends. About once a week I oil my scalp with this shea butter concoction I was given (you can buy it on sheastore.com)
…good luck!
So depressed my grammar is waay off. Let me ask again – properly: Just read that your hair length is predetermined – so how can anything help your tresses grow. #depressed

I am curious to find out what blog system you’re utilizing? I’m experiencing some minor security
issues with my latest website and I’d like to find something more secure. Do you have any recommendations?
This is a great post! I like using Jojoba or Sweet Almond oil on my hair to keep it moisturized.

I have been trying to grow my hair out for about a year. A year ago I got a perm and my hair litterally fell out. I am still experiencing extreme breakage and shedding.. I am def wanting to go natural but do not want to chop off my hair from the perm ends. I do want to keep my hair in straight hairstyles with minimum heat. So how can I do this without getting further damage?
I have mixed lavender oil with olive oil and have noticed a big difference in my daughters natural hair! It has more luster, less kinky and thicker than ever. I am going to continue to try different mixtures for until I get the right blend!
I couldn’t agree more than this article. I used blue magic and my hair remained the same for ages, no growth, hair loss…it was terrible. Thank goodness for BGLH!
I massage a quarter-sized amount of castor oil with a dime-sized amount of jojoba oil and a few drops of water in my hands then spread it evenly throughout my hair at night and in the morning during the dry winter.
Opps, *with*
I have been having a lot of success with carrot oil. My hair growth is thriving. the oil. Maybe next time Carrot oil will make this list!
You forgot to mention castor oil. That stuff does wonders.
My favourite recipe is castor oil and jojoba oil with lavender and sweet orange essential oil.
Aliss, what is your recipe to mix these oils?
I’ve been natural once again for 2 months now. I just start using Jojoba Oil (jar) and mix it with coconut oil. So now I wait and see for new grow. Also I was wondering should I mix Castro Oil as well since I have island people hair texture….. and also when mixing these oils should it come out thick or more liquid like texture?
I wanted to know how do you exactly apply the oil to your hair? Do you just pore it all over your hair or take it piece by piece? Also my hair is relaxed but it has been growing. Only thing is it growing unevenly (so annoying) and its not as thick as it use to be either how can I get my thickness back? And I’ve been reading that a lot of you don’t use heat on your hair. Well how you do straighten it do you just let it air dry. Then style? And being as though my hair is relaxed with the wash and air dry work for me? I hate sitting under the blow dryer anyways. Lol.
Shamika,
When applying oil, I section my hair and pour a few droplets, and then smooth the oil through my hair with my fingers from root to tip (but I’m kinda heavy-handed with my oils). A lot of people have said they use a hair dye applicator bottle to put oils in, and that’s another easy way to apply as well.
Your hair isn’t growing unevenly in truth; hair grows at the same rate all over your head. It just seems like it’s growing unevenly because some parts are breaking off more than the others. I had this problem a lot when I was relaxed, and I found that it was related to how I styled my hair. Ponytails/buns put a lot of stress on the front and sides of your hair, so if you wear your hair up a lot, your front and sides will always seem to grow slower than the back/top of your head. Also, it could be because your hair is multi-textured when natural; different textures respond differently to the same relaxer. Try switching to a gentler relaxer.
I don’t use heat on my hair really, so I don’t straighten my hair. But if I want smoother, more regular curls, I use roller sets/bantu knot outs. When they come out right, it’s hard to tell that I’m natural (great for meddling, disapproving fam). I’ve heard of relaxed girls using a wash and go (then scrunching with mousse), but I don’t have any personal experience with that being a good idea :/
I hope this helps you!!
I went to a Dominican hair salon in Sept and the hair dresser burnt my hair..now my hair is horrible. No longer do I have my coily curl pattern(really upset).I have been natural for at least 5 yrs, I have straightened my hair in the past there before and never a problem. I also colored my hair for the first time and have also experienced breakage despite keeping my hair moisturized and conditionded daily. Is there any thing that I can do to help with the heat damage the beakage and the problem spot. Currently I am going to braid my hair in the next 2 weeks. I also have a very weak spot at the nape of my neck, could be alopecia not sure, however that’s the only problem. Any help that any one could give me would be highly appreciated…. thanks in advance.
Once you have heat damage, the only thing you can do is cut it off or slowly transition by wearing style to camouflage the heat damage. But eventually you will have to cut off the damage. As for the breakage, a proper moisture and protein balance is in order. Are you doing enough protein and moisturizing deep conditioning treatments? To moisturize is not enough if your hair is not strong. Check out the blog The Science of Black Hair as well as the book of the same name. As for the weak nape hair, can’t really tell by your description what’s wrong. You can always visit a dermatologist/trichologist for help. Really define what you mean by weak and then you can address the issue. HTH
Go to Puritan.com… you can order mostly any natural oils or vitamins form this site. There are a lot of products for natural hair care that can be found on line, with lots of testimonials and tutorials… Be Blessed.
How can i get jojoba oil in Nigeria?
Where can i get jojoba oil in Nigeria?
I get mine at MedPlus Pharmacy.
Castor oil works really well as well, Camilla does to. Castor is pretty heavy tho so its good to mix it in with camilla and jojoba oil to make it for a daily use thing
My favourite oil at the moment is Jojoba- it is light and easy to use. I do like the Jamaican Castor oil- but as its quite heavy, its not for frequent use. However there are so many different types of oils out there- which is the greatest thing as you can mix and match depending on how your hair feels at that time. NubianSisters.com
Hi, I was wondering with the wheat germ/aloe vera/coconut milk, do I use aloe vera gel?
Great Article! This article is similar to a blog I read about secrets to fast hair growth. Check it out at http://www.realnaturalhairgrowth.com.
People think that products grow natural hair, but I can get my hair to grow 6 inches in 2 months with just water and coconut oil. Get the eight secrets techniques that grow hair fast here http://www.realnaturalhairgrowth.com/.
Hey ya’ll!
First I’m going to say that I’m Native American and Black, my hair is kinky, and my hair at one point was past where my bra strap would have been and much much MUCH more thick than it is now. Over the years, I have not been taking the proper care of it like I am suppose to. I am now 19, in college, and trying to grow my hair back.
I just cut my hair twice in the past couple of weeks. It’s not a buzz cut but it’s shorter than I wanted it to be. I can tell that it is getting healthier a little bit but I want to make it more healthy and I want to go back where I was before!
I am very interested in this forum! I am checking out products on Amazon and I’m wondering:
1. What type of product from these choices should I get? Something designed for hair or for food? Natural ingredients or Synthetic?
2. Where else could I buy them?
Also, I am an athlete and I go to them gym regularly. I’m training to be a model and I’m constantly styling my hair for photoshoots. What should I do to reduce the amount of styling I do to my hair at shoots? Playing sports all year and going to the gym?
Help would be great as I too am trying to go natural!
Thank you!
Morgan (:
Hi! Im Tresa and I am very much into hair care. I think you should try some of the products on this website that I have provided. I use the Virgin coconut oil and the deep conditioning scalp and hair oil RELIGIOUSLY!!! I have the thickest hair in earth and its length is past my bra strap. So, it is a job in itself just to deranged it on a regular basis. The profits at Seven by Nature are all natural and very very effective. A little bit goes a long way so I do feel like I am getting my $$$ worth by the results that I am seeing. Mot, if not all of the products here are infused with virgin coconut oil. My hair has always been long, but not this long! I am so excited. I tell everyone about Seven by Nature.
Oh sorry. The website is 7bynature.com. The company is Seven by Nature.
Hey Morgan,
Was just checking out this sight and i read your comment.
You should try Naptural85 or Kimmaytube on youtube..They have really Helped me!!
Hope it workes for you;-)….
I know I’m late with this reply, but you should investing in good lace wigs for the times you have your photo shoots or have your stylist bring the wigs to you custom made to the shoot. You must remember that constant hair stress like ponytails, dyes, and heat will take a toll on your hair. I am in no way affiliated with this website or the owners or wig makers but you should really take a look at louisepierre.com their units look very natural.
I’m a huge advocate for using natural products for natural hair. Rosemary and wheat germ are aiding in my hair growth. I’ve been using rosemary for about a year now and I’ve seen significant growth and improvement in my Locs. I do advise focusing what you put in your body as well as what you put on your hair.
What measurements do you use?
Hi! Do u crush the rosemary? Or is it rosemary oil?
Rosemary is great I have had a wonderful experience, it made my hair so strong, in which it didn’t break off, I love the article I will be mixing a tincture of my own, love and light to everyone!
@MsBayBeauty coconut oil does not clog the pores, it does however act as a sealant to lock in moisture. Source: http://www.exoticallure.com/blog/Coconut-oil-and-Black-hair-Growth.htm
Anyway, great post!
actually all oil clogs up the pores. It get’s dirty and stuff and you breakout and have acne. That’s why i clean my face after i put oil on my hair.
I read that oils DO NOT clog your pores. I found this hard to believe as I was always taught that oils would “stop your scalp from breathing.” I also read that since your hair grows from underneath the scalp, it’s going to push it’s way through and therefore it will grow regardless. Oil attracts dirt to your hair and scalp. Our hair automatically produces “sebum” (natural oils). If we didn’t wash our hair for a month or longer, our hair still grows. Although it would probably be cluttered with dirt from the excess oil, but the growth process would still continue.
Not true. Only mineral oil would do that.
Only products with petroleum/mineral oil cause this buildup effect. Natural, unprocessed oils mimmick sebum, which is the oil your body naturally produces. This promotes hair growth and hair nourishment.
Does it matter if I steep rosemary/lavender/burdock root in water and mix it into my shampoo, instead of oil? I used oils and it made my hair too greasy, even after using a vinegar rinse. Will I still get the hair growth benefit using the leaves/root?
I heard coconut oil clogs pores??
I keep getting these ads for http://www.kanchiindianoil.us. And I don’t know why. please give it a rest!
Thank you all for the tips. I just recently started with the natural treatments. Actually have a mix of rosemary and olive oil on my head as I type. My problem is that my hair is breaking, rather badly. It’s long in the middle and very short at the back and sides. I have also burnt really badly while using relaxers, and so have a dandruff problem as well. I have braided my hair to give it a break from heat treatment etc and want to use this time to heal the scalp and stop the hair breakage. Besides rosemary and olive oil, do you have any suggestions? Oh and once I remove the braids, I plan to use texturizer and not to return to relaxers. Also a typical tomboy who is discovering the feminine side of having pretty hair so need all the help I can get… I am totally clueless.
i wanted to know can i mix emu oil, extra dark jamaican black castor oil, oniom juice and horsetail herb extract andrub it on my temples to promote growth. isit fine to mix or do i have to apply it separately?
I’ve just started using coconut oil on my hair because I had my ends dip-dyed (ladies, if you’re growing out your perm, this is a REALLY BAD IDEA) and they just looked fried. I’ve used it twice and am already in LOVE. The ends are soft and shiny again and the healthy hair (unpermed, undyed) is looking great as well. I do want to start using the jojoba oil because I want long hair and am not interested in a weave.
For anyone who is interested, if after using the oils in your hair it feels greasy and heavy, mix 1/2-1 teaspoon of baking soda into your shampoo and let it sit for a minute or two. It’s better than using a shampoo that strips your hair and is great for volume as well. 🙂

Hi
Thank you for this informative post.I have a question though.Whenever I use oil in my hair, after washing my hair look drier than usual.I have thin hair which used to be curly, now they are just frizzy and they have been falling since my child`s birth. Please advice me on how to use oil correctly and how to wash it out.
PS I cant really leave in the oils because my hair are thin and they would look greasy.
Before applying oil to your hair, apply some sort of water/aloe Vera juice or liquid product, this opens the hair follicle and helps the oil to penetrate the hair strand, I am 4a and I use the l.o.c (apply liquid, then oil then some sort of creamy product) method to moisturize and seal my hair, I would say it works because my hair is thriving and always shiny.
I’ve been using coconut oil, castor oil & almond oil for a couple of months now. I mixed them all up in a bottle. Then I use only the coconut oil as hot oil treatment when I wash my hair. Its ridicolously amazing. For the 1st time in my life the lady that washed my hair at the saloon the laSt time complaind my hair ws too long! My hair had been the same length for10 years till now!!!
Hey jasmine, I have been using pine tar grease for my bold spot. But do u think castor oil n coconut oil will work better. Where can I purchase them? How long did it take to c results n what else did u do ? Thanx, exclusivelyurs
I also been using the same mixture for about 2 months now and my hairline has been thickening up very nicely .
I’ve been natural for quite some time but did not begin taking care of my natural hair until recently. I have Type 4c hair and would like to hear from other Type 4c’s regarding what combination of oils and products works for their fine, soft, and coily hair.
does it work for real?
coconut oil and castor oil did d magic 4 my receding frontline hair. My hair is fuller and darker in just 3wks. I apply it 2wice a day even my eye brow is getting thicker. Thanks to God 4 given d idea of trying it and it worked and still working.
@firstlady thanks for the info on coconut oil & castor oil. I have a receding hairline also and never thought to use it there or my eyebrows. 3 weeks you say?! I’ll be trying it. Thanks!
Do you massage it in when you apply it or you just leave in on the scalp? And if you do massge it in does it matter how long you do it for?

Although I love using coconut oil and it works PERFECT for me, I believe that everyone should experiment with different oils and see what works best for them. I have coconut oil (light scent), argan oil (smells great), olive oil (light scent), rosemary oil (medium scent), etc. I have used them all and nothing works for me like coconut oil and what really “seals the deal” for me is applying about a quarter size worth of Mega-Tek to my hair-especially the ends (this feeds it keratin protein, gives it shine and keeps it from breaking). What works best for some, might not work for others and vice versa. Once you find what works best for you—stick with it and I’m sure you’ll be glad that you did lol!
I think argan oil is the best natural thing you can put on hair. My favorite argan oil is from this brand called Pro Naturals (got it online at Beyas) because it’s also a heat protectant and it’s very light and has a really nice, subtle smell. You can put some on your damp hair after a shower and it’ll fix your hair all day long, it’s really good for breakage, frizz, dryness and to prevent hair loss and split ends. It’s better than olive oil, almond oil, coconut and a whole lot of others. It absorbs better and helps more. 🙂
I love argan oil too. It makes my hair (and me) very happy.
I mix aloe vera juice, honey, vatika oil, mustard oil, castor oil, glycerin and apply it to my hair as a spritzer. I don’t use traditional shampoo I use Betonite clay and deep condition once/week. I also use henna once a month and deep condition afterwards. My hair has grown from .5 inch to 12 inches in less than two years. I love being natural hair after relaxing for more than 30 years. I just wished I knew how to style my hair. I always wear my Angela Davis afro or afro puff.
Thank you very much, Charlene. Will give it a try. Is it the kind of oil that you could add essential oils to, such as rosemary, etc?
Hi Nicole – You and I have the same kind of “in between” hair. My hair has some parts wavy, straight, thick/thin….anyways, Yes you can mix coconut oil with any oil. That’s another reason why I love to use it. Also, because I try not to blow-dry or flat iron my hair (unless I really need to). After I wash it and comb it out, I apply coconut oil to it, put it into a ponytail and then wrap it in a little scarf. When I take the wrap off, my hair stays in place for the whole day and looks nice. Good luck!
Hi Nicole! I would recommend Coconut Oil because it’s a natural moisturizer while penetrating the hair shaft and it doesn’t just lay on the hair. Also it’s not greasy L:) HHG!
Very much enjoying the conversation, Ladies. Watch out, Scalp. Rosemary oil prepared and seasoning, as I write! But I am wondering, what would be the best oil mix to use on the actual hair itself? I am mixed (Mother Irish, Father African) and my hair texture is pretty much in between, and curly, so I do need to use a light hair moisturiser. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance, from a desperate woman in London!!
I used the peppermint oil and the jamaican black castor oil with lavender oil in it and they both work phenomenally in term of hair growth. I have eczema on both my hands and on the inside of my right arm so I applied the castor oil to those areas every night and in two (2) weeks the eczema cleared up! I also have been using aloe vera (leaf) in my hair everyday as apart of my leave in conditioner mix for almost ten (10) months now and I’ve seen a significance in growth; it just passed shoulder length in September of last year now it is close to bra strap! I love this stuff they all have been working great for me and I am constantly researching other natural herbs, oils, and ways to better to take care of my hair, skin, and body. Now I just incorporated clary sage oil in my leave in conditioner mix (which contains coconut oil, olive oil, black castor (very little), Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk, Peppermint Oil, Aloe Vera, and Clary Sage) and it smells soooooo good; almost remind me of chocolate lol. Natural products are the way to go!
Good luck everyone 🙂

I am over 40 and Bi-racial(black and puerto rican), and it seems that my hair is not as thick, or doesnt grow as it did in my younger days. I have been natural for about 5 years
now, and I love the natural texture of my hair. There is a weak spot where my hair will just not grow in the middle of the back of my head,as well as the nape of my neck. Would you mind giving me a list of the natural oils you use, as well as how to mix them together. It is so much information and I am a little overwhelmed. I am so EXCITED to see that there are so many women that are returning to their natural roots.

my daughter is using it and it’s great porduct
Interesting all the talk about herbs and hair. I accidentally found a tincture in a health magazine which included , olive oil, caster oil, nettle, burdock, almond and grape seed oil and of course fresh Rosemary.
I purchased all, and now I wish I’d taken a picture before because its been some months but I have a bit of “hang time” hair on my neck as my beautician calls it. My hair looks healthy, bounces and In this case I am not natural, I have a perm, but stopped doing them myself !! Plus stopped using the store bought oils and shampoos with additives ( stuff that makes it suds) I rarely use them unless I have no choice. Natural is harder sometimes …but much better in the long run.
My hair loss is due to medications for hypertension…so anything I can do to save my “crown and glory” is worth the effort.
THANK YOU FOR THE TIP ,I ALSO TAKE MED BLOOD PRESURE PILL THAT HAS LEFT ME BALDING ON THE TOP OF MY HEAD .
Woowww! That is amazing. What is a TINCTURE, and where can I purchase it, and how long before you noticed the results? I am really anxious to try something that may work for me.
@Thokozile – sounds good just remember the hair grows from the inside out 🙂
I just rinsed my hair with apple cider vinegar Stinging nettle,Horsetail,Burdock and Saw palmetto. I also use black seed oil on my scalp and hair.I want to grow my hair very long like it used to be and these treatments really have improved my hair’s texture and growth..I have some lavender and I was just wondering if it was good for my hair..

L-Cysteine (Amino Acid)! LOTS of water! Multi-vitamins! Hair,Skin & Nails vitamins! Protein! Just “OD” on them for 6 days and take 1-2 days off to give your liver a rest.
I don’t know how to mix all these roots and oils properly. So, is there an organic product line that anyone can recommend. I have natural hair and want to increase hair thickness and health of scalp. Thanks so much!
i am thinking about africa’s best organic olive oil hair products i did some research on youtube for women who is trying to grow their hair . folicure i heard that is good for growth and hair thickening and you can get these products at sally’s beauty supply store .and organic root stimulator .that’s at walmart and drug stores and sally’s beauty supply store . women have said these products work for scalp and growth .i will be doing the africa’s best organic products next week ! .i hope i helped you and others .but remember everybody hair is not the same ! . god bless you and others !.
I have relaxed hair. For growth and conditioning I rely on numerous oils such as Almond oil, Jojoba Oil and Mango Oil.
Ive recently made a oil mix of olive, grapeseed, coconut & lavender…i had to eleimte the tea tree bc it appeared to give me head sores no matter how diluted it was…now I’ll add a few drops of peppermint. I keep it in a small bottle with a long tip that is perfect for applying it strategically on the scalp so i dont get the mixture all over my hair (i dont want limp greasy hair!)then i watch tv while I massage my scalp for 5-10min. Im trying to incorporate scalp massges more frequently into my regime to help stimulate blood circulation which hopefully will encourage hair growth. I’d considered peppermint but thought it would just cause a tingle but had no real benefits. So glad I read this article!
oh! i forgot also add castor oil bc i heard it has great healthy hair & scalp benefits too.
I have read several just right stuff here. Certainly value bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how much effort you put to make this sort of excellent informative web site.
Thank you so much for taking time to write this article! I will look into these and report my feedback in the upcoming months. I’m interested to see how everything will work for me and my mom. We love natural options!
I love peppermint oil is my favorite and it helps relieve headaches as well.
Thank you ladies for all these valuable reminders. ln my younger years l followed a very natural lifestyle and have since gotten away from t. At this point n my life l am returning to my roots [smile) l will try all of them.
All those ingredients and much more are fantastic, we use Nettle, Burdock, peppermint in a lot of our products…and jojoba oil is used in the MangoBay Buttercreme, and that is brilliant for hair growth…If any of you are on facebook I’d love for you to see one of our clients hair growth journey after becoming totally bald after Chemo and radiationtherapy…

i donot have face book please is there another website to show the woman with chemo that was bald and her transformation
has anyone tried to do a rosemary rinse? im just starting the loc’ing process and i heard it good for locs. There should be more post on locs
What abt black Jamaican Castor Oil? i heard its awesome for hair growth!
ive tried most of the mixes on this list except the wheat germ, aloe and coconut milk combo. They all work really well. I have been using lately an aloe juice/rosewater combo with jojoba oil and herbal extracts of burdock and lavender. Extracts are a bit cheaper than essential oils but they dont have as strong a smell ( also called tinctures). These have worked wonderfully for my scalp and hair. I plan to try that combo this weekend on my hair and let you all know how it goes 🙂
I deep condition with coconut milk and honey.
I tried using a few drops of rosemary oil mixed with sweet almond oil once to use on my hair and scalp. I instantly got lightheaded and my head felt really weird. Could that be an allergic reaction?
Rosemary is used as a dream inducer…it’s said to help you astral fly. You have to be VERY light with it. Too much and you’ll have thore affects. Look it up outsode of hair uses.
Also rosemary should not be used if you have certain health conditions, like epilepsy or high blood pressure
I’d like to add cod liver oil. Not on the hair but as a capsule or oil to drink.
I’m on that for health reasons, but it really does the hair and skin wonders. They say the liquid is best, but take the capsules if the idea of drinking two teaspoons of fish oil makes you scream. =)
My grandmother used to make us take the liquid form and she stood there to make sure we swallowed! It tasted terrible, but we were rarely sick!
I take it now as a supplement as well, in the capsule form 🙂
my grandmother gave us cod liver oil mixed with lemon juice and honey everytime we had a cold. worked like a charm. sometimes old remedies do better than some of the drugs on the market.
I’m surprised extra virgin coconut oil isn’t on this list. I could have sworn coconut oil stimulates the scalp and promotes hair grow. Hmp!
*growth
I’ve used organic coconut oil on my hair and scalp, I found it good for shine but not hair growth. For me
I’d also like to add basil oil to this list. Like rosemary oil, basil oil also stimulates blood circulation and promotes growth. While it’s not an oil, chamomile is also a great hair product. I add dried chamomile to my aloe vera and vegetable glycerin spray.
I use Jojoba Oil at the moment but not tried any of the others, Can you use these whilst pregnant?
Definite no on the rosemary and peppermint. As for Lavender I think your supposed to avoid it when pregnant just in case it is in essential oil form. As for the others I not certain. Saw Palmetto if I remember correctly affects hormones so I think it should be no as well.
Aloe vera should be fine though. But you may want to look them up just incase.
How did you make your rosemary oil?
I usually buy fresh rosemary and olive oil, add the rosemary to a jar w/ a tight lid and fill the oil to cover the herb. Cover tightly with a lid and put it in a dark place for a minimum of two weeks. Shake it at least once a week. The longer you leave it, the more potent it will be.
I wrote an article about the ways you can infuse your oils with herbs.

love the pic, i gotta stop by a herbal store

Peppermint EO feels so good on my scalp. I use a coconut oil/tea tree EO/peppermint EO mix for scalp pre-poos.
Me too! Well not for a pre-poo, but to give my WGO light oil moisturizer a more pleasant smell and help wake up my scalp.
I’d added peppermint oil to my scalp-massage oil (some coconut/some castor). Seems to help my dry scalp as well as my hair.
Hey! I recognize your name from OHN. Hi!
i’ve tried rosemary oil which i made myself since i have a huge rosemary bush in my yard. i love the sensation and the smell; i’ve tried so many natural things from various sites, but something’s working because my hair is growing really fast.
I swear by rosemary oil. When I first started my transition and wore my hair straight. I massaged [my scalp] with olive oil infused with rosemary 3 days a week.
Try New KANCHI INDIAN OIL, beleive me or not it works.
to buy here is hint http://www.kanchiindianoil.us

Ooooo, that sounds interesting. How long have you been using rosemary in your hair? I’m interested in growing my hair back out after a drastic hair cut. But I want to do so in a healthy way and form better habits. When it was long I was styling it too much and I rarely saw growth. This time I want to leave it alone, but also keep my scalp healthy with natural products. And if I can make them myself (low budget) all the more better!
Omg what are u using to make ur hair grow really fast, :O I grew mine out for 2 months to have bangs with my hair but the hairstylist chopped my hair hair short and I hate it, I told her not to do that but did it anyways so please help me I really want to get my hair length back so please thank u and how long did for your hair to grow 🙂
