Slavery was abolished 162 years ago. Jim Crow (legal segregation) just 60 years ago. And today I have the freedom – as a black woman – to own a business and serve a customer base of all races, genders and nationalities. 

As exciting as this is, I’m also reminded that this is a tough time for black owned beauty businesses. In the past 6 months several black owned beauty brands have shut down. 

It’s a reminder that, although we’ve come a long way, we still have a ways to go. Poor access to capital and lack of entrepreneurship education can be challenging to overcome. The recent attacks on DEI don’t help, as they push the narrative that it should be illegal to support a group of people based on their historical disadvantage.

As BGLH Marketplace continues to ride the cultural wave, I’m grateful for every one of you, who has supported this little brand for the past (almost) 10 years. We’re thriving in the midst of all of this because of you.
