We’ve long thought that wrinkles and aging skin are a sign of, well, aging. Now, new reserach finds that aging skin — as a form of skin damage — contributes to cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, and mental decline, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s!

The jaw-dropping findings are based on a 2021 study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

So how does aging skin contribute to so many fatal diseases?

Wrinkles are like rust on a car: unsightly, but also part of a more serious, underlying issue called “inflammaging” — the age-related build-up of sick and broken cells — which become disease-like as they increase.

And because our skin *surrounds* everything else that ‘disease’ then spills over into all of the body’s other organs and tissues, damaging them. It becomes a vicious cycle, ultimately leading to cascade failure.

From the BBC;
“The latest research suggests that wrinkly, diseased, or damaged skin becomes part of a system of inflammation, releasing a chemical cocktail that leads to yet further damage and inflammation… Locally, these chemicals degrade collagen and elastin, causing further skin thinning, wrinkles, and reduced elasticity…

But this is just the beginning. As the largest organ in the body, the skin can have a profound impact. The chemicals released by diseased and dysfunctional skin soon enter the bloodstream, where they wash around, damaging other tissues. Amid the ensuing systemic inflammation, chemicals from the skin can reach and harm organs that seem entirely unrelated, including your heart and brain.

The result is accelerated aging, and a higher risk of developing the majority of related disorders. So far, aged or diseased skin has been linked to the onset of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cognitive impairment, as well as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.”

Tomorrow we’ll get into what the research says about the importance of moisturizing to combat this. But for now, we urge you to take this research seriously and treat your skin well. You can start today!
