A new customer recently expressed disappointment that our whipped butters didn’t perfume her skin.
So why did this happen? After all, other customers walk around smelling like Ice Cream or Lemon Cream or Baby Powder all day thanks to our butters.Â
The answer is, it all depends on your skin’s unique chemistry.
We use essential oils to scent our butters. And they’re not designed to adhere to the skin like perfume. As a matter of fact, in too high of concentration essential oils can irritate the skin.
(Side note, it’s why some of our butters have a milder scent. We dilute the essential oil in our products within the recommended limits for skin safety.)
Some customers’ skin chemistry is such that the essential oil will cling to them and linger. For others it will cling for a short time and then dissipate.
So why add essential oils at all if they aren’t a guaranteed perfume?
1. For aromatherapy! Essential oils are proven to improve mood and promote calm when inhaled.
2. To avoid the use of synthetic fragrance. According to the National Library of Medicine synthetically fragranced products are increasingly linked to side effects, ranging from “migraine headaches, asthma attacks, respiratory difficulties, neurological problems, mucosal symptoms, and contact dermatitis.”
We don’t say that to scare you — many people use synthetically fragranced products with no issue — but we didn’t want to contribute to any potential irritation.
And there you have it!
Whether our butters perfume your skin or not, they smell incredible! And remember, they will always leave you deeply nourished and moisturized.Â
