26 Black Owned Beauty Supply Stores to Support

photo credit: www.curlsunderstood.com for Tendrils and Curls

In light of the Grand Jury decision to not indict former police officer Darren Wilson for the murder of unarmed teen Mike Brown, there have been calls across social media and various online outlets to boycott Black Friday and redirect those funds to Black or other minority-owned businesses. The call was met with mixed reactions. Some balked at the idea and were staunchly against it. Others (like me) supported the idea, but also felt the need for a more long-term strategy that would continue to focus on building economic capital (and therefore leverage) within Black communities.

On Thanksgiving day, I had a passionate discussion with my brother in-law about the economic call to action. I shared with him that I believed the ever-growing natural hair community presents a unique opportunity as an enclave in which this economic shift can take place — because it already is. The move to support small, women, Black, and other minority-owned business is already alive and well within the natural hair community. We support brands like Obia Natural Hair, Camille Rose Naturals, TGIN, TreLuxe, Alikay Naturals, Qhemet Biologics, curLUXE Naturals, Bee Mine, Nancy’s Kitchen, CurlPrep, Coco Curls, Mielle Organics, Sister’s Keeper, The Mane Choice, and dozens others. I don’t know about you, but I support small business brands because the overall quality of product tends to be higher, they tend to be healthier for my hair, and I trust the brands more because they are the brainchildren of women with a vested interest in natural hair, and because it means everything to be able to financially support the dreams of women who look like me.

We’ve got the brands down to a science, now it’s time for phase two. Supporting the small in number, but ever growing Black-owned beauty supply stores and retailers — both brick and mortar and online. Here’s a list (it is by no means definitive) of beauty supply stores that you can visit and shop online with, to continue with the call that harkens back to the 90’s LA Uprising to “Recycle Black Dollars”:

Note: If you know of a Black-owned beauty supply store or online retailer that is not mentioned, please leave it in the comments and I will add them to the list. Thank you!

There seemed to be a pressing need to tell our story, establish ourselves in the community,  and provide a positive environment for businesses in our community. There were lots of Afrikan writers, artists, jewelry makers, seamstresses, and entrepreneurs, in the area and they helped bring Shades of Afrika to life. To those then and now, we give thanks. We are dedicated to the betterment of our community, and it’s the community that we have seen grow just as we have grown. Shades of Afrika has evolved from being a small retail store to being a cultural center that hosts a variety of social and educational events, lectures and study groups.

      1. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need everything those asians got on lock in their store. I just want to put my money in a black beauty supply store. Hey a great idea too is have seminar tutorials in your story for women that may want to learn to install or style their wigs/weavs or hair. Also have a stylist in your store that can do wigs styles. Or teach loc wearers the techniques of self twisting hair.

  19. Thank you for this list, and for the others that have added to it- I’ve definitely bookmarked it! Although I’m not planning to do any travel outside the tri state area, I still followed these companies on fb and instagram to show love and support. Definitely will be visiting Ecodermis and Wolfberry!!

  20. If anyone follows Hair Crush/Chime Edwards, she did a video post on her website called “6 Home Remedies & a Product for Dandruff & Dry/Itchy Scalp” where she recommends a hair & body butter from Baked Butters which is (or so I thought) a small, black-owned business. The butters come in yummy-sounding scents & I decided to try them. Please don’t make the same mistake I did! I think this company is a scam that just takes your money & you get no product, can’t reach anyone & have no recourse to get what you paid for. I knew something was wrong when I didn’t get an email confirmation of my order after I placed it. There’s only one way to contact them & that’s via their email address listed on the site. The site says emails are answered within 24 hours but I’ve been trying to reach someone since I placed my order November 13th! I finally gave up & disputed the charge with my credit card issuer. If you are ever tempted to try them, don’t waste your time or money! Oh well, I’m still not giving up on doing business with businesses like the ones listed because this is my first bad experience & I’ve had many good ones…

  21. This is important thank you for posting this. THe recent cases of racial profiling and police brutality has made me more aware of supporting black owned businesses I recently bought some products obia natural and plan on checking out the nyc brick and mortar stores mentioned.

  24. I did not realize that Hattache was black owned! I’m so glad because I just ordered from them up to last week. Their delivery time is amazing, considering that they ship through the U.S. Postal Service. I got my last order in about 2-3 days! If you are looking to order afro kinky type hair, I definitely recommend them. They carry brands like Eon, Nafy and Kadi. They have other products too, but I just ordered the hair. I had a great experience with them, and plan to reorder from them in the very near future. Just so you know, I am not affiliated with this company. I just want to help my sisters in the NHC, just as all of you have helped me <3

  30. I really support your Article. It’s way overdue on the recognition that we need and must support our Community for us thrive and solidify our Economic position. This is what every other Community does.
Thanks for exposing and highlighting this important issue about “Recycle Black Dollars”.

I’m the founder of 15 Melbourne. I am of African/Caribbean descent, my husband and biz partner is Indonesian. Sorry for the confusion!

  31. I don’t like lumping “black-owned” and “minority owned”…a LOT of beauty supply stores are “minority -owned” we give them $$$ and they have the worst customer service…and do not give back within the community to the people who give them money…no I do not like that lumping together at all…

  32. Thank you so much for including The Natural Hair Shop in this list! We are a Black and Woman owned online store that provides satin hair accessories to help you maintain and protect you and your little one’s hair!

Our offerings include: charmeuse satin reversible bonnets, satin pillowcases, satin backed baby blankets, satin car headrests, satin lined winter hats and much more! We appreciate your continued support!

    1. I found your website sometime ago and I purchased 2 satin car headrest covers for my car back in July and will purchase 2 for my sister as a gift. My sis was telling how the back of her hair is breaking and dry and I mentioned could it be her headrests and she believed that the headrests and her chair at work may be the cause. So at least I can help her out with the car seat. Good quality satin…no complaints here.

    2. I just sent you guys an email requesting to tell me more about yourselves, literally 2 hours ago. I understand your tactic on being descreet about it. I totaly understand. Once people find out that a good and reputable business is black owned, they find a way to sabotage it. I TOTALY understand why you didnt want to disclose that info to me.
Your words “Black and woman” owned.
either way… .GET READY TO TAKE MY MONEY!!!
