Just when you think you’ve heard and seen it all, someone uses onion juice in their hair. Yes, you read correctly, the same veggie that you use to flavor your salads and chicken, is being used as an ingredient in shampoo and hair treatments.
Apparently, unbeknownst to some, onion juice has been used as a hair growth stimulant for quite some time. Men and women have been using it for thinning crowns and hair lines with success. It can also help treat dandruff and keep the scalp’s hair follicles unclogged.
Why It Works
Onions are very rich in sulfur, which promotes blood circulation when applied to the scalp. The sulfur also helps your scalp produce collagen, which we know is essential for growing new hair. Additionally, sulfur has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Those two gems help to keep your scalp free of pesky scalp conditions (dandruff, dermatitis, etc.) that may keep your hair from growing to its full potential. Onions also strengthen the hair, which is a big help if your hair is thinning. The strengthening will limit the amount of breakage that you experience.
In order for the onion juice to promote hair growth and keep breakage to a minimum, you must use it for several weeks. Like anything that promotes hair growth, it will not do so overnight. Natural hair YouTuber, HowConnie, shared her experience about a 6 month journey with onion hair masks. After 6 months, HowConnie was able to regrow a bald patch on the crown of her head. She also had bald temples, but regrew them with consistent use of her onion masks.
How To Use It
If you’d like to try a homemade recipe, take a look at this recipe below.
Onion Juice and Honey Treatment:
Ingredients
– One Onion
– Honey
– Essential oil of your choice
– Blender
– Strainer
Now that you have your tools and ingredients, here’s what you need to do:
First, peel, chop and blend the onion. Then take the pulp, put it in your strainer and press down to extract the onion juice into a bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of honey to the onion juice and a few drops of essential oil to mask the smell of the onion. Put the concoction on your entire scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the treatment out and follow up with shampoo and conditioner.
If the homemade route isn’t really your thing, you can always purchase ready-made onion shampoo. You can also add minced onion to your own shampoo. Simply mince half an onion and shake it into your shampoo. Let the shampoo sit for fifteen days and wash your hair as usual. You can follow up with a deep conditioner that has a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

how long it take to regrow hair in bald patch??
Thank you I want to try.
That’s nothing new. In Haiti, we’ve use that mask a lot. a blend of onion and garlic juice, sour orange juice, castor oil and ginger. You leave it marinate for 1 to 2 weeks, and then use it. It doesnt smell good though
My mom used to put garlic on any thinning or balding spots to regrow them (some Ethiopian home remedy) but I never knew if or why that would work
These have been some interesting techniques, but it’s hard to tell if these women are regrowing their hair because of the needles (which seemed very alarming to me) and onions, or because they spent dedicated time massaging their damaged areas, keeping them lubricated with oil, and being gentle during the time of their treatments.
no I will not be trying this.
