So, it seems like every other day a black female celebrity takes to Twitter to show the real hair beneath their wigs and weaves. The latest is Lil Wayne’s ex-wife Toya Carter, who had some people scratching their heads with her recent reveal. While the back of her hair is back-length and of a curly/coily texture, the front is relaxed (or maybe heat-straightened?) and significantly shorter, perhaps to blend in with her weave. Toya was clearly proud of her strands, tweeting “#allmine” and “#longhairdontcare”. Click for the photo below. Ladies, what do you think of the reveal? And what do you think of the trend of black female celebrities tweeting “real hair” photos?

Them angry ppl are probably bald and jealous. Lol
People can do whatever they want with their hair. Too many people criticize others for not having natural hair. When they themselves have natural hair and evil heart. What’s on the inside us more important.
The bigger issue, to me, is why we care who Toya Carter is/was and why we care what she does with her hair? She’s Lil Wayne’s baby momma & someone else’s (I can’t even recall who) wife. Who GAF what she does with her hair?! Furthermore, the majority of folks commenting/frequenting this site are looking for natural hair care assistance/inspiration and/or to impart/gain knowledge on the subject…why is her reveal/journey/regimen any less relevant?
I’d say the thing that ifs being overlooked here is the fact that this picture of her shows us how damaging the effects of heat and environmental exposure is to our hair! Forget everything else about who she is and what her hair is doing. We all are on this site because we are interested in the state of our natural hair so look at the lesson here. Her picture shows a perfect example of what can happened to your hair when left exposed and altered vs being unmanipulated and protected. The front it’s broken and stagnant while the back is flourishing. So just keep it positive and simple and take the pic for what it is worth people! Look for the message in everything that you see instead of seeking negativity.
I dont understand these celebrities. What is the point of having long natural hair if no one can see it? confirming to what you think your hair should look like. might as well have a relaxer if you want to wear weave 24/7.
When They’re off camera their, family, friends and acquantences sees it. It’s only television viewers who don’t see it. When more Hollywood Stylist learn how to manage , care for and treat Natural Hair, that’s when you’ll see more celebrities especially with super long Natural Hair wear it out more. Until then; ‘Protective Style’ it is. They need to find Stylist who work with Natural Hair—maybe by asking Celebrities who wear their Natural Hair Out all the time. (There are some who do. Kim Coles and Kimberly Ellis)
It’s not Just about ‘THE LOOK’ the Industry has been going for but some of these Celebrities go through so many stylist when the travel. Their MAIN STYLIST can’t always travel with them or go from Set to Set. Unfortunately many Stylist still haven’t learned to manage and Style Natural hair. They will Straighten their Clients’ Hair in a minute. Celebrities have complained about the extreme damage and breakage suffered from over styling & abuse of their own hair for Television Shows and Movies. So they weave it up. Besides Natural Hair has to be Maintain in Order not to look Jacked-Up. Regular Busy people like us have to squeeze time for our hair; especially women with thick long Natural hair that takes forever to dry… so imagine them trying to keep up with it with their Crazy Schedules.
Sorry for the typos
Katrina That’s the point ! why black women on media should always wear caucasian hair to go on TV ? it is possible to change that way, there are some celebrities who keep their hair natural on TV and they don’t have any problem don’t forget Young little girls watch TV too : Mum why is my hair not like this woman ? why i don’t have good hair like this ?
My hair is natural for the last 3 years and before that I did perms every 6 months but I realized I didn’t need a perm but I also like my hair short. So when I want a longer style wigs are my thing. I love having healthy hair but I also don’t like some protective styles. Just my preference. Being natural doesn’t have to mean wearing your hair in a Afro or coils it can also be having healthy hair that you wear straight. Just my opinion
Im natural. I love my natural coils. BUT. I also love weave!!! soo i mean everybody isnt as comfortable with their natural hair. my cousins natural hair is down her back but she doesnt like long hair. So she wears short quick weaves. Thats her personal preference. She doesnt want to cut her hair because growing up we were taught it was our crown and glory. lol. so she lets it grow. but she doesnt wear it out. I think hair is just an accessory. Some people dont want a big ass fro. I love mine but some times its overwhelming. Weave is so much easir!!!!
Thanks for you’re HONESTY, wish more people would have a mind of their own and stop following everything ‘Someone Else’ is telling them is appropriate for black women yo do with their hair.
Also it was stated that the hair in the front of Toya’s head was short…this is the blended hair which is not protected. Therefore, would more than likely not grow as fast.
Toya’s hair…it simply needs conditioning…hair looks that way after being braided for a length of time. Remember those braids can stay in for over 2 months. I usually let mine stay in for 3 months…you can imagine the amount of length I gain. And I can tell you my hair is long and healthy. So, don’t be fooled by the condition of her hair right after the braids are taken loose.
I think it’s great that celebs are showing us their natural locks. Many times when celebs sport weaves people think that it’s because they don’t have a lot of hair. However, some of these women are proving this to be wrong. I use to be one of those people, I didn’t understand why anyone would wear a weave. Today, I think differently…my hair has grown in leaps and bounds since I started wearing a weave. I don’t wear them all the time, but when I do, I see a noticeable improvement in length and health of my hair. Be Blessed!
Because for over 2 decades women have been using Weaves as a Protective Style to save their Relaxed or natural hair from the abuse, heat and overstyling that comes with being in the Entertainment industry; especially due to inexperienced and multiple Hair Stylists on each Set working on their hair. (Not to mention their schedule & travel) They would often discuss this on interviews and talk shows in the past -whenever asked about it by Hosts who have seen their Real hair. (It’s to ‘Save their Hair’) Vanessa Williams was one of many who said she would not have a strand of hair left if it weren’t for Wigs & Pieces here and there. Today Weaves & Wigs are even more popular and a STYLE that’s not going anywhere. Natural hair women wear them just as much as relaxed hair females do. Crochet, Sew-in and Wigs with Tutorials on how to blend natural hair in with the weaves.
Why all of sudden are all these Celebs showing off thier Au Naturelle Hair? if they are showing off that thier own hair is so long why not use thier Real Hair instead of Weaves/Hair Extensions Smh xx 🙂
It is what it is! I mean, kudos to her for having what is considered a good length of hair, but why must we care so much?! Of course it’s always interesting to see what someone’s real hair looks like, but like with most things in life, I will never understand some of our most hostile opinions about what OTHERS do with THEMSELVES! No two heads are the same and we must do what is best for our OWN heads. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to the care of minority hair textures. Going completely natural at all times may not be favorable for all hair types. I find that texturizing my hair semi-annually helps with overall managabilty and health. Natural hair can be just as difficult/expensive (if not more) as relaxed hair. Like with all things, its all about moderation and technique. In addition, all this hate towards weave is even more confusing when many “naturalistas” will have you to believe that protective styling, such as sew-ins and plaits, are vital to the survival of natural hair. But I digress, I’m sure we’ve all heard/read different things (forums, blogs, books, how-to’s etc.) in regards to caring for natural hair. Seeing as we can’t all please everyone one at once, I’d just like to add some positivity by saying YOU GO GIRL! It almost seems like an all out war amongst black women concerning being natural vs. relaxed.Simmer down people! Kinky, straight, coiled, silky… regardless, please believe, OUR black will always be beautiful! Much love to you all, whether you be nappy & happy or relaxin & chillaxin!

Chelly this us what I’ve been saying on Narural blogs and forums. I AGREE!
Today Weaves & Wigs are even more popular and a STYLE that’s not going anywhere. Natural hair women wear them just as much as relaxed hair females do. Crochet, Sew-in, Braids and Wigs with Tutorials on how to blend natural hair in with the weaves. SO ENOUGH with the complaining.
Sorry typo: ‘is’.
Also I was referring to those who are complaining.
I always knew Toyas hair was real.
I think it is brilliant that all these black celebs are showing the youth of today that our Mothers knew what they were doing when they embraced the fro in the 70’S…..Seriously…the Afro hair consciousness has awoken and i am proud…Shalom Xxx
I mean I like it lol
I knew she had long hair from looking at all of her old pictures… and her daughter hair is long as well… I lick it!
“Healthy hair” lol hair is dead you crazy people. Her hair looks fine. There is actually very littke breakage, it is frizzy. I am tired of straight hair, I am not in some damn movement, I just love the look of my natural hair. I love natural hair because it’s very feminine but yet rock starish. I have always been a wild thing, so my hair reflects the me inside. However I love straightened hair too, but not as much as frizzy, kink curls. I like the duller look of curls. I am actually not into all that shine thing. I nevr liked “Indian hair, never got that? But I do love blonde hair. Not a big fan of red. But anyway, I love the look of straightened black hair but I just prefer the kinky coil curls.
Just because hair strands are technically “dead” does not mean that there’s no difference between healthy and unhealthy hair. But I agree that it’s difficult to make judgments about the health of her hair just from the pic.
Why are Toya’s edges so straight & so short?
Probably to blend with her weaves, so she can do ponytails and so when the wind blows it you don’t see a track.
That is exactly what I am wondering. My hair stylist was telling me how some women relax their edges and still have the nerve to want to be called natural *side eye*
I believe people think that just because you wear weaves or wigs that you don’t have hair and there seems to be so much negativity towards celebs because they wear weaves, and etc. They are just proving they do have a good head of hair. Celebs have feelings too. In the business they are in there is a certain image that is more acceptable than cornrows, braids, fros, and natural combed out hair. I don’t think it has anything to do with being ashamed of their black hair. And might I add; if you think about the nature of their business their hair would not hold up to the heat of blow drying, flat ironing, and relaxers.
and that’s exactly the problem! Why aren’t fros, braids, cornrows etc .. not or less acceptable than straight white looking hair? Why should it be less acceptable? That is the problem. As long as WE , black women think styling our hair that way is less acceptable and agree with what they impose us, natural hair is never going to be accepted.
Why do we need our hair to be flat-ironed etc to be on TV? why do that “extra mile” that our hair does not support just for the sake of looking “acceptable”?
It’s time we let THEM (the media) know that that is how our hair looks and those are the styles that do not damage our hair and those are the styles that we are going to wear.
She didn’t say that it was unacceptable; she said that there is a certain image on television that natural styles are unacceptable within the industry. And there is. It’s slowly becoming more acceptable to have natural curly hair and you can some some natural sistas rocking it well, but they’re on the fringes for now. It’ll catch hold over time.
I agree 1000% if we fight for our hair then they cannot tell us no. I do appreciate Toya though, I understand that shes using it as a protective style, but there needs to be more pormotion of her and her hair texture, and how she really looks, NATURALLY!! Atleast from time to time. This would allow young girls to see its possible.
omg….she JUST took it out from under her weave!!! annnnd you not even seeing all of her hair. people need to relax. she probably just needs a deep condition and a little trim. haters i say! JEEZ!
I agree! She has nice textured healthy growing hair that just needs a little trim and deep conditioning, since she took it out from the weave.
As others have said,it doesn’t look healthy at all. Some ppl r so obsessed with length they don’t care what form its in! I remember being that way as I grew up with a perm, as my hair broke off I was determined 2 not cut off the uneven, damaged ends bc length is what mattered in the black community. Even shorter haired women with poor thin hair u could see right through wouldn’t trim it bc they’d rather have horrible thin neck lenghth hair than trim it shorter. its this obsession with length that annoys me! Its a lifetime of learned bad behaviors that I now recognize. I’ve been guilty of it too and ive learned to cut unhealthy ends as needed and stop worrying if its BSL, MBL, WL or whatever acronym makes us feel special!
her hair was just taken out of braids… um if you’ve ever had a sew in or seen one everybody’s hair looks like that right after the braids come down. then you wash it and treat it and trim it and its fine!!
Yes Mr Tv you dont accept my Cornrow ? I agree where is the wig store ? Yes Mr TV i do everything you want.
I choose to transition to natural for hair health. Relaxers are not healthy for my hair, in addition to the fact that I try to live a pretty chemical free lifestyle. Naturals have to be careful not to read too much into weaves and such. It is a hairstyle. Just as many naturals spend hours and many dollars trying to achieve certain looks that are not the way the hair grows right out of their scalp. We have to be careful that this does not become yet another issue that divides our people. Do not allow yourselves to get caught up in ‘the better black syndrome’. Just as I do not buy that lighter skin or or “good hair” makes you any better, I do not buy that kinky or coily hair makes you any more enlightened or conscious. It is just a way of choosing to wear your hair.
I’ve been natural my whole life and I also wear weaves. People wear weaves because they want to. For some folks to say she’s wearing a weave because she’s ashamed to show her hair is ridiculous. If that’s the case ppl with relaxed hair are also ashamed. Do you, Toya! You’re beautiful either way!
very GOOD length!!!with hair that long who needs a weave?the hair has2air out for at least2weeks or more after every renewal of unit!!if not the hair grows weaker not stronger.AS I, A PROFESSIONAL HAIRSTYLIST SHOULD NO THAT!!!!!
Toya there is nothing nice abt your hair. Length doesnt equal healthy her hair looks a mess! Please stop posting articles about these wack women who are claiming natural but would never be caught dead with their hair..nor do they know how to care for it.they all have a stylist!
What’s the point of having Natural hair just to cover it up? It states that they are ashamed or something which is why some woman won’t go Natural…..It’s no different than getting a perm and throwing some tracks in. I’m proud of my Kinks and Coils and don’t care who sees or does’nt like it!

Off subject, but Natural Diva in SC, do you mind me asking where you are? I’m in Columbia.
At the end of the day, celebs wear their hair under weaves n wigs bc even if THEY embrace their hair, mainstream entertainment does NOT unless thats your niche! we bend to the pressure bc we want to be successful. Some ppl choice to wear weaves bc of the stress heat and chemicals can have but its a double edged sword. if you want to wear it natural WHY dont you? If you choice NOT to, thats cool too but at the end of the day are you NOT doing natural bc someone is telling you itll HURT your image or career? Thats my issue. Toya can wear it how she likes as long as SHE likes it that way. I just cringe at the thought of blk celebs not wearing their natural hair BECAUSE they are told its not desirable for their career.I think many take a role that they earned & deserved and the first thing hair n makeup wants to do is slap a silk weave /wig on them instead of LEARNING to work with different textures of hair. If youre a real stylist, LEARN your craft 100%, not just caucasian hair!Is it more taxing? maybe. Time consuming? yes. Now you know what we deal with and its not something we should tuck away bc you dont want to deal with it! Then there are some that just dont like their natural hair. They r drinking the kool-aid and feel its not pretty unless it curls or flows. THOSE r the celebs I have issues with.
I just wish more black famous women would refuse to perm or weave their hair period. From what I have read, the entertainment industry would not hire a black women for certain roles period and the roles we do get, we better not show up in an afro or barley-rows or any type of natural looking style unless its for a slavery movie or we are clearly mixed with straight/waivy hair. It’s a shame, because little girls look up to these women and that’s exactly what the white-owned industries want, blacks to hate themselves and their hair. It all goes back to slavery and that infamous Willy Lynch philosophies. That said, it’s nice Toya is showing her hair in this picture, but hopefully one day she will have the courage to just step out and wear it and be herself, no weave/perm/white-women imitation hair that the world has told us is ‘beauty’ when all it is is fake. White women are amazed with our hair when we do it nice and wear it with confidence. Let’s be ourselves: original!! It’s about that time.
It does not look that healthy to me but its probably the angle or the lighting..I with some others on this, why go around saying longhairdontcare when you where a weave ALL THE TIME. You do care..I think her show casing it has anything to do with it being natural but the length she wouldn’t show it if it was much shorter..I think she’s trying to project an image or conception of herself. I’m a Black girl with “good hair” or “Long hair” to make herself seem superior or better than other black girls.. I get that vibe from her…I didn’t get that vibe when Angela did it and I got another thought when Nikki did it, I think Nikki it was more about Yall talking about me wearing weave wigs I do got hair BTW.
But this only proves my theory in wearing weaves does grow your hair..doesn’t mean its a good thing when the reslt is two different textures. And I’m not hating BTW.
Love natural, but black natural hair depending on texture and length is time consuming so I fully understand wig or weave especially if you are in the spot light or busy running a business. I respect her revealing it. I would not have LOL. One day she will prob wear it all out its beautiful looks healthy in the back.
Alot of celebrities from way back wore wigs, weaves to protect there hair as apposed to over manipulating it and destroying it… Not sure what’s going on in this picture but her natural hair doesn’t look healthy. could just be the picture.
I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about…Hair is hair…Being natural is a choice not a movement…Why do we focus on who does what and why…Her hair is what it is, her hair…I’m natural as well and what bugs me is the criticism and critic many keep up via facebook and twitter about hair natural/relaxed…Ladies calm down and rock your crown how you see fit…I do love when women come from relaxed to natural because overall it’s a healthier choice for your scalp as well as your hair…Thank god for Chris Rock and The good hair documentary he filmed…Very informative for me as a stylist and Black women…
I remember those days. I lost a lot of hair after I had my son. One way I dealt was to wear bangs to help diissuge a slightly thinner hairline. I wore my hair curled and full, to make it look thicker. My hair did grow back. It is not quite as thick as it was before, but it is still thick.
Wow!! All that hair! I’m so jelly lol..my hair is healthy but I love the variety I get with a perm but I will do better. She’s such a beautiful woman.
It looks weak and unhealthy.
Why ?
The fact that CELEBS CHANGE THEIR LOOKS SO OFTEN WE SHOULD COMMEND RHE FOR HAVING THE STATE OF MIND TO PROTECT THEIR HAIR AND USE PROTECTIVE STYLING OF THERE CHOICE…. HAIR IS NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND ALL YOU SISTA SOULJAS NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT INDIVIDUALS HAVW RIGHTS TO THEIR OWN OPINIONS …… YOUR NATURAL FOR YOUR REASON STYLED TO YOUR LIKING….. QUIT BASHING OTHERS ….. THERE IS NOW A STIGMA A NEGATIVE CONNOTATION ASSOCIATED WITG NATURAL WOMEN….. ” OVER BEARING … JUDGMENTAL ”
I PERSONALLY AM A FAN OF ALL THINGS WEAVE IT ALLOWA ME VERSATILITY WITHOUR DAMAGING MY NATURAL HAIR….. WHICH I USE AS A REFLECTION OF MY OVERALL HEALTH …. NOT TO BE PART OF A MOVEMENT
I LOVE TOYAS SHORT CUTS
LOVE AND RESPECT EVERYONES OPINION BUT PLEASE QUIT BASHING ….. UNLESS YOUR ASS IS PERFECT AND THE MOST HIGH YOU HAVE NO ROOM…..
No perm no heat all black naturals arent coily all the time

Gorgeous picture. Healthy hair! I understand your anger. I think people should do what they feel is best for them and wear their hair in a way that makes them happy. You’re right – weaves can keep natural hair intact while you have fun trying out new looks.
I am not on board with bashing other Black women who wear natural hair under weaves. But I understand the “natural hair movement” sistas’ anger. I have heard preachers at Black Christian churches preach against naturals over the pulpit. I’ve heard other Black women who wear weaves make fun of other Black women who have short natural hair and say, “She need a weave.” Black naturals with big hair get their hair patted down at airports. There are brothas who look at natural women and ask when are they getting their hair done or washed! There are Black mothers and fathers who give their natural daughters a hard time about their hair. Look at the whole Gabby Douglas incident. She is the first Black American woman to wear a gold medal at the Olympics and primarily Black women who are not natural complained that her hair wasn’t straight enough or neat enough . . . and her hair was straightened! These “natural hair nazis” have sunburn from incidents like these. But I’m not going to let anybody else’s anger and pain make me angry, anymore. I think we all should respect each other’s choices.
I really don’t understand the difference between this woman “hiding” her hair under a weave and other naturals “hiding” their with protective styling. Someone stated in a comment that isn’t doesn’t matter that her hair is long if she hides it. I often ask that very same question when reading or listening to blogs/vlogs regarding the “need” to hide your hair by protective styling to achieve and retain long hair. When are we going to stop worrying about how the next woman wears or cares for HER hair.
I think it’s a good way for your every day citizen to see that not all of the celebrities you see are bald under their weaves. Its also can prove to be some motivation that you can have natural hair and keep your straight hair healthy!
I’m glad that more Black women are not relaxing their hair. To me, that’s what counts. My preference is to showcase my natural hair texture naked, but everyone is different. Differences should be respected.
Okay, long hair don’t care huh?? Then wear it!! I think she has a relaxer in the front, I have some friends that do that. The front of their hair is relaxed and the weaved up section is natural. Not a good look. Because if ever she wanted to stop wearing the weave, she will have a hard time with the relaxed front being damaged.
very true!
these celebrities would more than likely not be posting pics of their kinky tresses if it wasn’t such a growing “movement” right now. yes, their hair grew long b/c it was braided up under weaves. but i don’t believe toya, or nikki minage, or angela simmons are of the mindset of “natural hair is beautiful and i don’t need a relaxer or weave to be beautiful…” i think they are showing their long natural hair b/c they see others doing it and know the popularity of it and want to say, “see! i’m real too! look how long my REAL hair is!” their hair is gorgeous. i wish they were natural for the reasons i am, but they are free to do as they please with their hair. i’m just over the whole “me too” -ness of some of these celebrities. we have totally different mentalities. we are not the same.
+1! I smell bandwagon, big-time, too. But better late than never. The number of Black women wearing relaxers is statistically increasing when it used to be 80% of Black women relax their hair.
The only thing I don’t like is that some of these women who are natural underneath a weave just started doing it. Some, not all, of these women used to put down, make fun of or downright bully other women with natural hair. I’ve seen it and heard it.
But two wrongs don’t make a right. At least she’s natural underneath. Her choice. Her preference.
This isn’t the first time she revealed her hair. I saw it maybe 2 years ago
That’s great & if I left my hair under a weave then my mother would have her little girl back with the really long hair, Lol I wear my hair to show those younger than me that it’s okay NOT to spend that money on extra hair & be proud of what you have and invest in you… I spend my cash on better shampoos and conditioners…
I don’t know how I feel about this celebrity trend. To me, it says less about being natural and more about, “I DO have hair underneath my weave!” They’re not wearing it out, why should I care?
She really needs to grow her edges naturally and do a nappy bang thing until they get longer.
Tweeting allmine. And longhairdontcare. Nice welcome for coming out and showcasing your hair. I truly believe that these celebs do. CARE. Yes, they care what’s oing on in the natural hair community.
Now about the picture I will only comment on what I see:
The face of a lovely black women with eyes to die for.
The hairline that has been broken and abused, and crying out for help.
The hair I can see in the back looks so damaged (very clear when enhancing the photo). It is holding on for it life. There is a lot of broken pieces.
The top- well the picture is cut off, so my guess is the hair myself off too.
I think she is actural proud of this tweet well it’s a start. These celebs have the same secret I had, they sit back and admire the lovely young proud black women and regret what they have done to their hair, and let the stylist do, and the entertainment community subject and alter their mind too.
I am so glad I stop looking at natural hair sites and put forth the effort to restore the health of my hair. Last perm was 2009 and have not look back.
Long hair but is it healthy? The hair on her right side looks a little brittle?? Also what’s the point of shouting about how long and great your hair is when you NEVER (not sometimes, but never) actually wear it out? Not even she sees it often because it’s weaved until she gets it done again lol.
I think it comes down to the business she’s in. When you’re in front of the camera, that means constantly getting your hair done. Many celebs find it easier to let a wig/weave absorb the stress of the maintenance instead of their real hair. I think it’s admirable for her to show she’s not snatched bald under her weave like many would think.
Business that she’s in? As far as I know she runs one small shop in New Orleans and happens to be (have been?) on a reality show. I don’t get any strong sense that she *has* to have a weave. She has it because she wants it.
I think that she has some heat damage on her edges because that is that part of her hair that is constantly exposed and the part that she likes to “blend” in with her weaves which explains why it is so much shorter than the rest of her hair.
And I also don’t think that celebrities are going natural all of a sudden. I remember reading years back (at least 10 or so), about celebs who wear weaves who stopped perming their hair underneath. I think that their mentality was why bother if the hair is never exposed. I also know of women who wear sew-ins as their protective styling until they reach a desired length.
Her hair is pretty, but I wonder if she relaxes her edges?
Hello..
I was thinking the same thing.
She has Heat Damage in the Front or She Relaxed it.
Her natural hair is really nice.
I always knew she had pretty hair.
I wonder What’s up with all the Celebrities
wanting to go natural all sudden??
And also Show there natural hair???
Toya’s hair is gorgeous! When I wore a weave for about a year or so, the first 6 months, I made the mistake of leaving my edges and the crown out. I wanted it to blend as naturally as possible, however, blow drying and flat ironing those pieces didn’t give them the rest that they needed. I’m so grateful now that they’re finally catching up and growing stronger. What’s that saying…”suffer for beauty”?…well NO MAS..those days are over for me, once I learned it all starts within. Now I detest the thought of getting a weave (someone else’s hair on my head just seems creepy now). Not knocking anyone who does, because it served it’s purpose in my life at one point.
I’m with the people who say it’s nothing to make a big deal of if she’s never going to wear it out. Long hair under a weave doesn’t impress me much because unless you are ill, you hair will grow. If it is only handled when you get your weaves done then it should get long unless you cut it!
I like seeing women with their long natural hair worn free because that means they took care of their hair and they’re proud of how it looks. I’m even more put off by someone with long natural hair who still thinks that they should wear Indian hair to be more beautiful than someone with short hair who wears weaves to get long hair. The fact that the front of her hair is short and relaxed means she intends to wear weaves for the foreseeable future.
+1million
Boooooo! Shame on you at your comment! and just because the front looks the way it does means NOTHING! I have a friend – both of he parents are black and her hair lays down just like this with water and regular gel or edge control gel but she doesnt relax it at all.She also can completely straighten her hair one day and the very next day after washing its back to tight coils- and shes been doing that for years- shes in her late 40s!!! Im so tired of black folks assuming our hair can’t do something without a relaxer in it or being mixed and IM SO TIRED of naturals looking down on other naturals because they choose to wear wigs or weaves instead of their own hair. White women don’t go through this issue when they wear their ‘natural hair’ and straighten it or wear extensions or weave– Everyone is not on the same journey as Sophie might be to have long or even SHORT natural hair that you wear out all the time! To some people it’s just hair and thats how all my natural hair is to me- its just hair and it’s there for me to do whatever I want with it that i feel looks good on me even if it means wearing it weaved up 24/7/365- which I don’t but thats Toyas choice!!! get over yourself- everyone is not so militant about it (rolls eyes)
Yeah, I see your points, but it doesn’t matter what race the woman is…either you take care of your hair or you don’t. Chances are the hair stylist does all the work for her, and that’s her business. I guess she’s proud of her untouched growth from under her wigs and weaves (like many women) and yes her hair will grow like crazy if it is never handled (like anyone). So, what exactly is she proud of? She wears someone else’s hair to make a certain look (a fact that many women of many races do just this) and hides her natural hair. So, is she proud of someone else’s hair on her head or is she proud of the hidden hair under her weave? If the answer is yes to the former, then shame on her; if the answer is yes to the latter, then lose the weave. She put herself out there to be commented on by posting the pic. To be honest, I wouldn’t flaunt having dated Lil’ Wayne.
Preach Anon!!…I’m am no natural hair nazi. I just long for the day when people are real about their intentions or motives. Wear a weave, rock a perm…but this “protecting my hair with a weave/wig” song folks keep playing on repeat bothers me. (Im sure i bother folks too) But If you are protecting it, then FROM WHAT and when will you set it free lol.?! I truly believe at this point celebrities (and others) are attempting to garner some “natural hair kudos.” Just to proclaim to yall “BOOM **ITCH I GOT HAIR” then cover it with the Farrah Fawcett mane. I’m(we are) not here to validate or initiate anyone onto the >imaginary< team- If you desire not have your natural hair or texture ever be seen the please Stop It Boo! Why wave flares at these little enclaves of natural hair connoisseurs? Again I promote freedom to do what you please with your hair(as i rock my fall flat-ironing) but the pseudo-peacocking needs to stop already. Wendy, Nicki, Angela, Toya etc
Preach ON, Shay! Hair is an accessory just like my watch or my pearls. I wear it up under a hat, weave, braids, or a let it loose & then black folks SWEAR its a weave anyway! Ladies natural hair is not a cultural or a phenomenon, we’ve always had this hair, even Lucy. It should not define us… Admittedly, I appreciate all the women who share their regiments b/c when my hair is doing its own thang, I have an online toolkit & methods of style diversification. Relax:-)
Well said, my sentiments exactly.
I actually knew a girl in college who has hair at the front of her head that looks straightened but she can’t dare ever put relaxer in it because apparently all her hair dropped out and her mother wanted to kill the stylist when her daughter got home. The stylist, in her wisdom, thought that relaxer would make my college friend’s hair LOOK more even; lucky for her it grew out fast.
Because EVERYONE is here to imnpress you.
Well she certainly wanted to impress someone. Why even bother showing the hair you don’t wear out in public?
She is so pretty to me. With that being said, I think she even looks younger with natural hair!
I don’t understand why one would want to use chemicals on their real hair to match their fake hair though. I mean, shouldn’t your real hair take precedent over your weave???
anywho.. yeah, I think it was be so BEEEEAUUTIFUL for all of the undercover naturals to a) put their foot down in the industry and/or b) come out of the closet. Hell, I’d shout to the roof tops and throw a party, because what these celebs don’t seem to get is that our little girls (and older women too) want to emulate their style!
We are waiting with open arms ya’ll!!
Just look at Viola, Rayven and Jill! While we Black women are some of the most hateful with our words & critiques, we can be the MOST SUPPORTIVE when it comes to welcoming new naturals who wear their hair proudly in public 🙂

There are some people commenting that this is none of our business etc., and I believe the majority of us couldn’t care less about what someone is doing with their hair. At least I don’t. But do not forget this is an online forum, where the writer of this blog post specifically asked ” Ladies, what do you think of the reveal? And what do you think of the trend of black female celebrities tweeting “real hair” photos?” So there for, yes we will have something to say about it. We all have the right to say what we want or disagree. Its unfortunate that some people take other comments to heart and internalize it as if it afftects them personally is when it gets pitiful.
Thank you for this comment.
I wasn’t going to comment at all in this thread but I just wanted to say thank you for bringing some maturity into these comments. Sadly it’ll probably get overrun by the silliness and pettiness but you know how that goes…that’s life on these “innanets”… 😉
To the subject: Harpo, who dis woman? lol
I don’t see the point of attention-seeking celebrity “reveals” any more than I see the point of insecure little girls whining because said celebrity isn’t donning the mantle of natural-hood. Some of us don’t need celebrities to be natural in order to feel good about our natural selves.
(Oops, there I go sharing an opinion on a forum that ASKED FOR MY OPINION. I’m sure I hurt somebody’s feelings somewhere for doing that. lol)
I don’t get why people are saying she is getting “hate”. Hating is really irrationally jealous. do you think if she actually styled her hair their would be “hate”? People are just saying they aren’t impressed, just because you show your hair on twitter. I think even her hair were permed and it was styled she would get a more positive response.
I agree. People always want to say someone’s jealous when they have a negative comment. In this case it’s definitely not jealously it’s just disdain for this ridiculous trend of celebrities showing their “natural” hair. No one asked them to show their hair and if they didn’t want some kind of reaction they wouldn’t do it because the job of a celebrity is to be scene and talked about.
No other celebrity needs to show their “natural” hair because no one cares. We’re glad you can grow your hair but for the most part it will be hidden under wigs and weaves so moving on.
I agree with you too amber, sa and Dolores. I glad that these celebs are showing their real hair. Before this, we really wouldn’t know what their hair would look like, but now we do. I’m very glad that Toya showed her hair, she has hair just like mine. I was shocked for a minute, but I’m really enjoyed looking at her pics for inspiration.
Also, most people on here are hating though. I bet plenty of so called naturals on this site stay weaved up or heat straightened. “Coughs” on the protective style with weaves being ok with them, but not for anyone else. These celebs are in the public eye, so they do have an image to uphold. I wouldn’t want to force naturalness on anyone and who can really be that natural in Hollyweird. What’s the point of having natural hair, but fake breast, noses, and other things that happen in Hollyweird, get my drift?
ill say something positive about her hair its natural and its long something constructive i hope someone tells her? take care of those edges once they are gone they tend to be gone for good wearing weave is fine and dandy but those edges are just as important and the rest of your hair
What’s the point of showing your natural hair, holding it down like its super long but the rest of your “natural hair” looks a hot mess. To me that shows that you really don’t care about your hair underneath and BY CHANCE, it grew underneath the weave and that’s why its that long. Not that you actually worked hard at it. The whole point of being natural is about liberation, beauty, and acceptance. Being able to wear OUR natural hair and still get job interviews….MY Question is…why did she take this pic?
No shade cause I think it’s amazing how long her hair is and I really wish ALL of her hair was this long and she would actually wear it!! What a waste of great length and texture 🙁
Exactly, I don’t see the pt. They’re any black women w/long hair on this site, I enjoy looking at hair when it is styled not between takedowns.
Cosign!
It is very disappointing to read, on a natural hair site, such negative comments about a black woman who is showing her real hair. This should be a space where women can receive encouragement, advice, and share stories about their hair experiences. It should be a refuge from people who are hostile to our natural hair textures. Instead, the comments to this article have found every flaw with her hair, and barely acknowledged anything good about it.
she probably just straightens her edges but really im like kinda over celebs being like “seee this is my real hair! okay stylist now put that weave back on you know im not walking out the salon looking like this”
I think most celebs that tweet pics of their real hair do it just for the attention and to maybe prove a point that they’re not bald underneath their weaves/wigs even though they don’t have to do it. It looks like she purposely keeps her hair short in the front and straight, though the shortness could be from severe breakage. Either way it’s her hair and she’s wearing it how she wants to. Her weaves look great the majority of the time and I’m not surprised that her real hair is just as long as some of the weaves she wears.
I really don’t get why some naturals are disappointed or show extreme disdain toward celebs that reveal their real hair, most of the time the celebs hair is long/longish/big–hair health aside. These celebs are obviously wearing their hair as they see fit and they don’t need any outside approval or people who desperately want them to -rep their real hair more if it’s -natural.
I feel that some secretly wish for these celebs that do these type of reveals secretly want their hair to be super short and super jacked up, because maybe their hair is super short or super jacked up and they’re secretly jealous, sometimes certain things are clear and evident. This kind of reminds me of the whole Angela Simmons fiasco that happened a while back, just more tamer lol.
black women are most hating ass mischief-maker there is and gossip a lot to damn I hate being around your type I work and a doctor office and that’s all y’all talk about how long someone hair is ,their skin color what type of ride she got damn and other thing you stay comparing yourself to whites
W.O.W. Amber…such hate… To disguise your hate, you may want to use qualifiers, for ex: Some, many, most, or those I have met.
If all the black women you meet are the way you just described, you are clearly hanging out with the wrong crowd. Try expanding your horizon.
I think she’s a pretty girl and it’s totally awesome that’s she’s natural. I’m not sure what method she used to get the front of her hair to “lay down”, but My question is, is her stylist really worth her salt if she can’t keep her hair healthy under her weave? I think it’s nice that her hair is super long but I don’t understand why it’s not healthy all over. I was under the impression that weaves were great protective styles. Hopefully it’s in route to being healthier.
It looks as if she may have had in a weave and then unbraided the hair that was sewn in. Maybe she combed out the hair and left the front the way it is. Just my guess.
I completely understand the position of each individual who has commented on this article. However, I find it SAD that I have not found ONE good comment about this woman revealing her NATURAL hair. So what if she wants to wear weaves. Thats here prerogative, and its HER hair. As long as she is confident about who she is underneath it all, she can do whatever the hell she wants. Regardless if she is comfortable with her own tresses or not however, is none of our business and is NOT RELEVANT to our lives anyway. In addition, maybe she is natural and enjoys not having her head fully relaxed but likes to wear weaves because she may feel they compliment her features more. You dont know what her logic may be for wanting to do so. Also, by all of you women posting comments with the type of attitude that says “not jealous of her at all”, my question to you is should you be? Was this the point of her revealing her hair on twitter? And if so WHO CARES. But dont make it a point to FIND something negative to say about her hair just because it is long and natural and so what if people feel they want long hair or need to prove they can grow it long. If they didnt personally want long hair they wouldnt grow it and a womans hair will either be long or not. Plain and simple. I just find it baffling how this blog is called “black girl with long hair” and you want to talk about people being obsessed with having “long hair” (which i find nothing wrong in wanting if thats your thing.) Perhaps you truly are jealous because your hair may not be where it needs to be and your insecure about that. Deal with it. I sure would love to see photos of each individual who has commented negatively so I can judge in the same way as many of you have. And I am not sticking up for Toya, Im speaking the truth. Im tired of seeing the countless comments on blogs when black women are judging other naturals. As far as this “natural hair bandwagon” concept, I find it hypocritical to speak against it. Shouldnt you be encouraging black women to go natural? The minute they get a perm or some damn weave you want to be quick to criticize but when people begin embracing what God blessed them with and it becomes a trend, you want to complain about people wanting to be apart of that. Its understandable that people do want to be apart of something and want to be involved in the next big trend but is there anything wrong with that? If the next trend was becoming saved would there be an objection to that as well? ANOTHER current trend is people saying “everybody wanna be apart of something and follow the crowd,” AS IF that very statement makes themselves look any better than the trend followers. Get it together PLEASE. Black people are the first ones to be hypocritical, envious of what they dont have when they should really be focused on themselves and how they can improve and judging others when they need to be judging themselves. What a shame. This is exactly why we are divided as a community today. And even more importantly, this is EXACTLY how people expect us to be. Smdh. We HAVE TO do better.
I love this!
This is so right Shavon!
As I said with Nicki Minaj and others that wear wigs or weaves as part of their public persona, what’s the point of showing your “real” hair if you’re not going to wear it on the daily basis?
I don’t want to image Beyonce without her lace front and fan onstage because that’s part of the Beyonce experience. If your brand is full lace front and face beat, then why is everyone taking these “look at my real hair, ya’ll” pictures as if they deserve awards.
Its almost as if there is something to prove and I really don’t think its that serious. Just as I know people have faces under piles of make up, I know they have hair under their weaves.
+ 1,000
I think that a lot of celebrities wear the weave as a protective measure and are not ashamed but are simply ‘protecting’ their hair plain and simple. Someone on here stated that Toya’s hair is just as long as the weave so why hide it? and someone else stated that she has a stylist so she could wear her natural hair? I tend to disagree with both of these ladies for the simple fact that these ladies (celebrities) have their weave straighten, curled, blow dried, tugged and pulled on more the average everyday woman and probably sometimes more than once a day, because of photo shoots, press conferences, public apperances, etc. and if they subjected their real hair to this type of treatment everyday, they wouldn’t have any hair left on their head!! Seriously, think about that. I do agree that she definitely has damaged her edges, but that’s her choice. I know I’m probably dating myself, but this is not the first time that natural hair was a revolutional move because I was there, and the same arguments that people voice now was voiced then, same thing, different day…….yes ppl do it because its the hottest thing right now and others do it because they want to release theirselves from the relaxers, weaves, etc., but whatever the reason, its their choice.
Great comment! Many people do not realize that the key to length retention for some hair types is low manipulation and protective styling. It’s possible that this celebrity would not have hair that is as full or as long if she “fried dyed and laid it to the side” MULTIPLE times per day or per week. Her edges are a testament to this theory.
I’m still lost @ Little Wayne’s ex wife, ewwww.
Whatever works for her, but I look forward to the day when black women will not feel the need to broadcast the length of their hair in an attempt to impress others. I see these kind of “look-at-my-hair-length” displays everywhere–I knew a girl who made a video on facebook to show all the “haters” that she did, indeed, have long hair. That’ll be the day when the majority of black women have realized that they, too, can grow long, healthy hair, and that it wasn’t genetics holding them back. Only then will hair not define us. We’ll all get to that point, I suppose.
I think these celebs are getting a little jealous of the natural hair celebs and are doing these things to gain attention. We use to follow their lead for the latest hair styles now we are looking more at natural hair community celebs who are just like us. LOVE IT.
I don’t have a problem with weave. I use to where it sometimes myself, but I love my natural hair. I feel great knowing that it is all mine and I don’t have to worry about people judging me, because it is not, even though I may be having a bad natural hair day. It’s a lot better to have a bad natural hair day than to have a bad weave day!!! LOL
i totally agree with the first part of your statement…..
congrats on her hair growth and being proud of it but this is starting to become an annoying way to get attention…NEXT
I have always thought that Toya was such a beautiful lady. Her hair is her hair and how she chooses to wear it is up to her. If she wants to have her edges like that, then so be it! I’m pretty sure that she is NOT oblivious to what her hair looks like. Also, when the whole look comes together with the extensions, it looks great.
Her hair, her choice, do you boo!
Thank you! Her hair, her choice! So many unnecessary negative comments on here.
I know, right? It’s so unforunate.
I don’t understand why she wears weave if her hair is the same length. I mean, I understand wearing it to give your hair a break, as everyone else stated, but she and others wear them constantly then come out and show their natural hair at the same length of the weave/wig and smile like it’s cute. she should just maintain her hair by flat ironing responsibly if she wants the straight hair look. I just don’t get it
I guess it’s hot in the celeb world to show what’s under the hood. who’s next? beyonce??
All-in-all, I’m thrilled she’s natural, though. just wish she would rep it more.
Who cares what their real hair looks like if they’re still going to hide it beneath wigs and weaves. Everyone always says they wear wigs and weaves because it’s easier but if you’re a celebrity with a stylist shouldn’t it be easy to maintain your natural hair also? I just don’t understand it. She gets no props from me for having a peice of hair that long. I’ll save my props for celebrites like Tracey Ellis Ross or Tempest Bledsoe who are actually wearing their natural hair for the public to see.
them edges are fried…ijs
i feel like natural hair is becoming like a cult. ppl get so excited to see a celeb with natural hair but critique them to insane measures to see if they qualify as “real” naturals. im so over “natural” hair. all i want to know is styling and healthy hair care tips.
FedUp…I’m there with you. Nothing seems to be satisfying to the “real” naturals. No one is good enough unless every waking moment is spent picking your fro and showing just how real they are. Who are “real” naturals competing with? Why attack so harshly?
Sure everyone has right to do want they want, and there’s no right way to be natural however, I think if her hair were styled, she would get props. But just showing people your hair in between a takedown, is not really noteworthy, right? She has shown it for reason, and people have given their opinion.
Why do you care what other naturals think about your hair? Only a simpleton would care so deeply.
You could ask this question about the million of pages dedicated to showing naturals showing off their hair! It’s all to collect likes and get YouTube followers. What’s the difference?
the difference is on you tube and on blogs, people have actually styled their hair. kind of like showing the ingredients and not cook meal.
Well you are sassy! If you post a pic, you are doing because you want to share, and general you are proud of what you are showing. Nobody post a pic of themselves looking wack, unless it’s a joke! So yeah she post the pic to get props, you as you can see many were not impressed. If you going to post of pic of you hair and lightweight brag, then style it.
I don’t understand the problem people have with her hair. How is anyone saying her hair looks unhealthy? Are you all talking about her edges because the rest of her looks fine to me? The edges are probably relaxed or pressed. My edges in the front are not a hot item either and if I pressed them they would probably be about that length. (maybe they’ll be. I haven’t pressed in almost a year). And no, I do not tension style my edges. I can’t. And yes, I’ve been natural for years. And, when I was relaxed my edges were longer.
It is clear she has some serious breakage in the front or some odd type of styling. The rest of the hair is fine but call me crazy, I would rather have 2 inches of a TWA which is all natural as opposed to what she has which is basically, damage front, protected back. I am actually wondering why her hairdresser does that to her, it seems like something you should sue someone for, not pay to get done.
I would rather have her hair then a 2 inch TWA, dying waiting to get her length!
I was wondering the same thing about the hairdresser. I suppose at the end of the day she’s getting paid and that’s all some people care about.
Well, this is a great illustration of how relaxers can mess up your hair. Wouldn’t want my edges to be 2 inches and my back length to be 16 inches.
I think Toya is very pretty and this should be a wake up to care of her leave out hair better. Vanessa Simmons wears weaves all the time and when she showed her natural hair it looked healthier and all one length.
All of you self righteous Natural Nazi’s make me want to relax my hair just to NOT be associated with you. You judgmental phonies! Get over yourselves!
eye roll…that sounds like a tantrum
It is very much a tantrum. Self righteous natural Nazi’s. Doing to others what has been done to you for so long. Let her wear her hair the way she feels. I’m natural and proud of it. Get out of her roots and maintain your own!
Lol @ tantrum.
Idk about anyone else but I don’t see anyone’s comments reflecting that of the Natural Nazis, so I’m confused about that.
You must be blind or illiterate!!
And you must be a 5 year old who can only respond with child like comments
Go relax it! Do you boo 🙂
Do me? Just like Toya is doing her? I’m in no way a Toya fan but I’m sure she doesn’t care of any opinions regarding her hair…weave or natural.
+10000000000000
Yeah right, that’s why she took this picture and posted it to twitter….because she doesn’t care. Lol, come on now.
How is her pic any different than any of the million of women that post on these sites daily? Because she a so-called celebrity she has to check with the Natural Nazi community first? Get real and get over yourself!
Clearly, anyone who posts pics on twitter #longhairdontcare actually DOES cares what other people think. Keep it 100,don’t be defensive and delusional. If she didn’t care there would be no need to broadcast something so irrelevant. Stop calling people names like ‘natural nazi’. It makes it seem as if you are insecure and slightly maladjusted. If that’s not the truth, then stop downing sisters for being authentic and deeply wanting that same realness from others. There’s nothing wrong with that.
That being said, I don’t care about how long her hair is or isn’t. I just think it’s very silly and kind of sad to do what she did and I DO have the right to say so.
Exactly. It really won’t hurt my feelings. And cool it with the NN term and comments. Naturals are women, who are humans, who have opinions. What a shock! They can voice them even if you don’t agree. So take a chill pill, for real.
My bad, naturals are men, too.
Spoken like a true Natural Nazi. Freedom of speech should really be used in a more effective way.
I’ll use my freedom of speech in any way I choose, just like you, to express my opinion however unpopular it may be. That’s why its called freedom. Now you use that same freedom, Ms. Anti, and you get that lovely relaxer. Let it sooth your scalp. Because I really don’t care. And maybe you should add Semitic to the end of that Anti label of yours. Happy relaxing. I hope you don’t just relax your hair, but your attitude as well.
LOL. Go ahead and relax girl, don’t let anyone stop you.
It does nothing to say you’re natural if all you show us is your weave and tracks. Those messed up edges were probably caused by weave wearing. It’s harsh on the hair! I think that people need to stop fronting and just be. Be honest for the most part.
She’s beautiful but her hair looks a little damaged. Who cares about hair length anyway especially unhealthy long hair.
What does it matter if you have long hair under your weave if you never wear it out. talking some “long hair dont care”. U mine as well be bald underneath your weaves.
Lol wow! That’s all I can say without being mean.
IDK- It all seems a like statement one would make in high school like “Look at me I am not bald headed under that weave” And really do I really care? I mean it would be more interesting to see their natural hair styled instead of what it looks like between takedowns.
She is such an attention wh@re. Every pick is her showing off her hair like it’s so special it’s long.
Not that I pay too much attention, but I’m starting to wonder what the point is. If you wear your hair in protective styles nearly all the time, and if you have money to pay professionals, hair will grow. It’s not news. Not that they have anything to prove (maybe they think they do, IDK), but it doesn’t prove anything.
Wow… At this point I wonder why they wear weaves
You know why they wear them…
O goodness…my hashtag is #dontcareaboutyourhair. She can do whatever she likes (is that a lil wayne song?) She can shave it kungfu style if she wants its really none of my business unless its my busine$$. No judgements.
T.I.
What is the point if they never wear and show their real hair anyway?
As some who rocks natural hair 24/7…… I’m not impressed with this trend.
By the length of her hair she was been natural for a while, I dont think its a trend but folks are more comfortable with the natural hair.
How is she more comfortable with it….if she never wears it out?
Agree. How comfortable can someone be with their own hair, if they won’t be caught dead without hair that is not theirs.
that question requires a lengthy answer that goes into celebrity lifestyles and pressure from the media, but I think I can supercondense it. I think it’s more difficult for a celebrity to show natural hair because they are the most concerned/self-conscious about their appearance and what people think even if it doesn’t appear that way to us. It’s just like how some of us may have been reluctant to go natural for the thought of what someone else would say or do.
Maybe the “trend” of showing what’s under the wigs and weave is a sign that natural hair is becoming more widely accepted so they are more comfortable showing it. Give them time to feel completely comfortable. I think they cling to weave like some of us used to cling to relaxer. it’s a “safe” move and they know no one will make negative comments.
I simply don’t get why she doesn’t just maintain her hair straightened if it’s just as thick and long. plenty of people do that. -shrug- just my two cents
“Give them time to feel completely comfortable. I think they cling to weave like some of us used to cling to relaxer. it’s a “safe” move and they know no one will make negative comments.”
You’re right, there is alot more pressure for those in the public eye to conform to the norm and I hope at least some get the courage to wear their hair out more if they desire to. Seeing so many non-celeb women going natural is obviously driving them to show these pictures but hopefully it encourages more “celeb” women to actually rock their natural hair.
Yea, so instead of bashing and putting down, let’s help build her up, boost some confidence in her natural hair, help her to learn how to manage, style, care, and love her natural hair.
I think is a great thing, we do it, and they do it too. Last time I checked they were human. I thank if they are proud of it thats awesome. I feel like this site is always finding a reason to hate or gather the natural hair police squad to start a hate rant. i already know what ppl on this site are going to say, “she is not really natural” “she is happy her hair is long cause it makes her feel more european” Well I say her hair look good!!!!!! Nothing wrong with being happy for another sister of color who has the same battles as me.
Most celebrities are relaxer free! We just dont know it cause they wear weaves and wigs, its easier to corn row their real hair to prepare it for the weaves.
This at least is better than that nonsense pic Nicki Minaj had up without her head or face actually in it.
My thoughts exactly!
LOL The same thought crossed my mind for a second or two. xD so wrong.
hahaha
If it’s all yours and you don’t care, then why not wear your hair out instead of hiding behind weaves and wigs? Not saying you can’t wear them, but I hardly consider that as reppin’ natural. Also, her hair is really damaged in the front. Not sure I would be proudly flaunting that fact.
I agree with J.Nicole its for publicity without having to commit. It’s just another way for someone to remain relevant. As they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

She’s cute in her pic. The relaxed edges are badly broken, but I guess if she’s gonna wear a weave 100% of the time she needs them to be that way to blend in with the straight weave. Perhaps she figures the edges can always grow back easily if she wanted to stop with the weaves and wear her hair natural. I can’t with all these celebs and these pics though, its like they are making it a Fad. No wonder Solange doesn’t want to be part of the natural hair bandwagon, it’s just too much politics, and people with personal agendas trying to make them everyones. Everyone wants to prove they have hair under their “hats”. This type of thing is exactly why I can’t bring myself to wear any type of fake hair anymore. I don’t want to have to constantly feel like I have to prove that my own hair is actually long too.
She probably just flatirons/presses the edges to blend with the weave, thats what most women do that wear weaves with Leave-out. I saw her in real life once at a CVS, and she is just as pretty in person 🙂
I’m sure that the front of her hair is straight because she presses it or flat irons it to blend with her weave, and over time due to possible heat damage it doesn’t revert back to her natural texture, it just stays straight. I’ve also heard of women who perm their edges but leave the rest natural.
Or her edges could have just broken off from perms and heat usage…
toya is very pretty but she can miss me with the ‘look-look-i-have-long-hair-too’ foolishness. keep your natural hair in a [protective] style, but damage parts of said hair with heat and/or chemicals to blend in with the unnatural weave? yeah, okay. i know i might get blasted for this, but i don’t believe for a minute that these celebs wear these bone straight wigs and weaves to protect their natural hair. it might seem nice to boast about your natural hair and snap a pic whilst sitting in the stylist’s chair waiting to get the weave put back in, but how about being photo’d out and about with your real hair? are these goofy celebs so spooked by their real texture they can’t “protect” their natural hair with a kinky weave?
I’m just about tired of these celebs who don’t leave their house without a weave shoring us their hair is natural under the weave. Who cares if your hair is natural or not if you’re not willing to wear it that way even sometimes? I’m not impressed.
maybe they wear weaves for appearances? and honestly there is nothing wrong with wearing weave. if done and taken out properly, it actually promotes growth without harming the hair underneath.
agree!!
Wearing a weave for “appearances” is fine if you want to appear to be wearing fake hair. Not impressed. Ha!
It seems that they NEVER wear their natural hair out though. Of course, it’s their hair and they can do whatever they want with it but there’s a message relayed that some of these women aren’t comfortable wearing their natural hair outside their house. It might be the case, it might not be! Who knows!
My own interest in it starts and ends there though because there are enough gorgeous natural heads in the streets repping strongly for the diverse beauty of our natural hair.
Honestly, a lot of actresses/tv personalities/musicians of all races wear weaves and wigs, because when you have to show up to hair and makeup every day for hours and have hairstylists use crazy amounts of heat and chemicals on your real hair it can cause your hair to break and come out. The majority of them wear weaves and wigs in order to protect their real hair.
Exactly, I totally agree with that…..It’s like Raven Symone, she does it because it’s something quick and it protects her hair, plus she wears her natural hair out on the streets. It’s a win win
I agreed they are protecting it. But it’s one well on the outside, the natural hair is damaged. It’s long natural damaged hair. Don’t these stylist see that?
I agree 1000%
exactly
LOL. I’m not impressed either!
I love that she is natural and DUH all hair does grow, so you’re really not extraordinary boo 😐 But her hair does not appear to be thriving, IMO. Letting your hair and scalp breathe for more than a few hours when re-installing the weave is more ideal for optimum hair health… I’m doing a one year protective style challenge right now cuz my baby fine coils need extra help to retain length. I wear wigs -they give me great flexibility with pampering my hair very OFTEN. I keep my hair plaited underneath and wash and DC every weekend, moisturize my plaits and edges daily like crazy, take my wig off at night, etc. It’s working wonders for me.
My thing is you don’t get a cookie for claiming natural hair and/or long hair when you are still NOT OPEN to wearing it in public… EVER (I wanted to say “ashamed of wearing it”, but I’ll be nice). I use to be one of those people.
Shooooot, even Prince let the creamy crack go and said fu** it, I’m tired of my ‘image’ clashing with my ‘true self’… I like my fro! 🙂
I love my for too!!!
I mean Fro…lol
By the way, I have no problem with weaves, yes they can be protective, give you a break, give you a way to change up your style, etc. Fantastic. BUT my problem is with these celebs that wear nothing but weaves coming and showing us their natural hair like we’re supposed to be proud of them when they aren’t even proud of their own hair enough to embrace it! Weaves are fine, but I’m just not impressed by what’s under if you never show it.
By the way, I don’t have a problem with weaves either. I’ve worn them sometimes too. I’m just not sure why these celebs feel the need to tell us they have natural hair if they never ever rock it. Weaves are fine, do you, but don’t come acting like you’re so proud of your hair when you don’t even embrace it enough to wear it even sometimes.
+1. LOL, at all these women showing their natural hair on twitter, but yet in public they wear hair that is naturally someone else’s 24/7. #Pleasestopit
Exactly! It’s like saying that your hair is long, healthy and natural, but still not good enough to be worn in public…not even sometimes… :/
daaaaaaaaaaamn.
I think it’s all about publicity.
It’s a way to jump on the ‘natural’ hair bandwagon w/out commiting to it. The natural hair community has become a financial juggernaut & a way to gain a wider audience. On the flip side, the bloggers jump at the chance for another natural post: no shade as I too recently started blogging.
What bothers me more is our obsessive need to show that we too can grow long hair. I get it, theres tons of stereotypes about our hair, but things like that look desperate to me, as if you’re fishing for complements or looking for validation.
SO agreed!
Very well said J. Nicole
It looks desperate indeed and very fake since you won’t even wear your own hair ever in the public. But just for instagram and twitter world.
+1
Yes! The obsession with length retention in the natural hair community is problematic in the same way I feel that some people are so obsessed with curl definition (topic for other time). I’ve been natural for some many years and I don’t wanna deal with long hair of ANY sort lol! I do wish they showed more icons with short hair, as if its strange for someone not to want long hair. Because I could have sworn to primary goal was healthy hair? Correct me if I’m wrong though.
No offense, but the name of the site is Black Girl with LONG hair…
“No offense”, but I could have sworn that the purpose of this blog and natural blogs in GENERAL was to celebrate the dopeness of natural hair. Didn’t realize that that depended on length. You obviously missed the entire point that I was trying to make if the only rebuttal you could think of was reiterating the name of this very blog, as if I didn’t already know that? But ok lol
Definitely not jealous of her hair. It may be “long” that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Those random short pieces don’t look good at all.
Exactly, if my hair is down my back I want all of my hair to be the same length and texture and most important, for it to be healthy.
Your comment seems so negative. Please keep this to yourself in future.
I agree with you Mia-P…so judgmental and opinionated. I cringe when I get to the comments sections sometimes of forums. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Her hair is long, no doubt. Wouldn’t that be enough?!?!
The question was what do you think of the reveal and I gave my answer. Her hair looks damaged in the front and she is jumping on the bandwagon showing off her “natural hair” trying to impress people because it’s long. I don’t have to like every natural hairstyle just because it’s natural and I can give my opinion whenever I’d like. Long hair does not equate healthy hair so no that wouldn’t be enough if it were my head. If you expect to see only praises on every article just because they are natural then maybe you shouldn’t read the comments any longer then.
So she relaxes the edges? Weird.
Very weird, I guess so it blends in with her weave…..but the edges are so damn short!!
