The quest to find a natural-looking wig…

Solange rocking a natural wig

Reader Oona says;

Thank you so much for creating and developing BGLH – it’s wonderful! I BC’d close to a year ago (don’t know why it took me so long!) and BGLH has been my number one resource for maintenance, styling and overall natural fabulousness. I have a question – a need! – that I hope you or someone in your readership can help me with:

I decided (based on my hair’s dryness and breakage) that I was overmanipulating and exposing my hair, so I have been keeping it in twists of late and have definitely seen an improvement. However, I want to take protection to the next level by wearing a wig. Finding one that looks realistic and fly has been a huge problem though – especially one that looks like a chunky, shoulder-length twistout à la Corrine Bailey Rae or Yaya DaCosta.

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a wig like this, or any other stylish Natural wig? Do tell! I’m an LA-based type 4-something with fine coily hair 🙂 I would be so grateful for any help at all.

Great question! Alright ladies, where can one find a natural-looking wig?! Feel free to post links or photos 🙂

  12. I agree with one of the commenters, Taren916 on youtube wears and reviews FIERCE kinky-curly wigs!! She gives information about where to order them and how to style them. Best of luck =)

  13. Hello sis, I hand make wigs & my #1 sellers are the Fro & Coily wigs…I also clean the naturally & treat the caps naturally. Chk out my photo gallery on my website. If u dont see a wig you like, I also make wigs from pics you submit to me. My prices are reasonable. You would pay more for a sew in and my wigs look like your real hair & everyone says my wigs feel nothing like a wig! Chk me out @ http://www.sheritashairtemple.webs.com also fb: http://www.facebook.com/sheritashairtemple1 and YT: www,YouTube.com/user/sheritashairtemple

  14. I’ve bought 4 wigs in the last 3 weeks. First, Vanessa Amerie (full), then Vanessa La Efrah (half), then FreeTress Monroe Girl (full) and Vanessa La Apple (half) Efrah is the closest match to my natural hair. Very similar is FreeTress Equal Tracy. La Jay I’ll probably try next Spring. I blogged about my wig experience, http://www.madeuphairstyle.blogspot.com and started doing vids, montREALady (YouTube).

  15. Normally I do not read post on blogs, however I wish to say that this write-up very pressured me to take a look at and do so! Your writing taste has been amazed me. Thanks, quite nice post.

  16. Hey Sam, I’m in London aswell… I’ve just google searched the beshe wig and its £69 on this website .. http://www.beautifulhairboutique.com/category.php?cid=7 I’ll defo be buying that for the winter whilst I’m at uni! and I bought the La Jay wig online from a shop based in Tottenham in May. I bought it online for around £20… just google it and then press the UK only button and you’ll find all the wigs mentioned above 🙂 xx

  17. Hey Ladies,

This is my all time favourite natural hair site, nothing beats it! I find everything here, its my fountain of knowledge.

Thanks to you I have now found two wigs La Ja by Vanessa and beshe’s Drew that I want to try. I have had to make do with clown wigs (dont worry I dint let the side down I trimmed them and made them look as you guys say, cute)

Only trouble is I live in the UK, London and they dont do La Ja or Beshe here and its so expensive to have it shipped. But I have family in the US so where theres a will theres a way! I think I should also put pressure on the hair shops to see what they can do, but the problem is I want the NOW!!!! I guess i’ll have to wait.

I’ll let you know how I get on,

    Peace
    Sam

  18. I want to buy lajay or drew by beshe but i have a huge head and dont really know how the wig will work. does anyone know any tricks?

    1. We stumbled over here from a different web address and thought I might
as well check things out. I like what I see so i am just
following you. Look forward to looking into your
      web page yet again.

  19. I also wear half wigs to give my natural hair a break or when I know I won’t have time to really style it. I basically keep it braided underneath and do my usual wash and condition on a weekly basis. I recently wore this half wig and everyone kept telling me how great my hair looked and how fast it grew…I had to be honest and tell them it isn’t all mine but my length will be soon:) I usually put a portion in the top with a twistout and just attach and bobby pin the half wig. I perform in church with it while dancing and it is VERY secure!

You can check our my blog I posted it more pics and information about it. I always buy my hair from HairSisters.com

  20. Great post! I’ve BEEEN on the search for a new natural looking halfwig myself! The one that I’ve been rocking thats kind of natural looking is called Tammy from Outre and I’m wearing her in the video I posted below 🙂

  21. Katour line wigs are the best I have ever seen. They are pricey, but they look very natural and come in a variety of colors. They carry several wavy/kinky styles.

      1. So many ppl tell me that. I don’t see it but she’s a beautiful chica, so I will take it. LOL

    1. Sooo…..I am now in LOVE with this wig! I have been looking for one like this because the curl pattern is verrry similar to mine. How did it hold up?

    2. I’ve been looking for a natural fro wig & saw ur pic! I love everything about that wig, especially the color, it looks very natural, would you mind telling me what color that is? Thanks!

  22. I co-sign the LaJay by Vanessa – I have two that I’ve cut two different ways to look good on me.

There’s a new line of products called Curl Duchess – http://www.curlduchess.com/

They’re clip-ins! My friend is modeling for the website, and it’s pretty pricey, but that may change as the brand gets its groove going.

    1. I’m sorry but that is a ripoff and a scam charging ANYONE that much for clip ins which is usually about 4oz of hair. You can buy hair that looks just like that and sew on clips yourself.

  23. Vanessa Lajay wig is my favourite, although you may need to cut it to suite your face as its very bushy.
    Check out my pic.

  25. I agree with the others who have already posted. I do wear wigs on occasion as a protective style, and my absolute favorite wig that I have is a curly afro wig from a local BSS. It was only $20, and while it looks like one of those obnoxious Halloween afros out of the package, I fingercombed it to my liking and now I adore it.

Beshe’s Drew and Vanessa’s La Jay are extremely popular options, but the next one on my radar is Beshe’s Shelly. ColouredBeautiful did a review on it (link below). Shelly is more of an afro style, so if you want more of a twistout look, go with Drew. There are tons of reviews on Drew, but BridezillaMartina did an excellent step-by-step with Drew, where she shows how to cut the lace and make the hairline more realistic. Link to this is also below. You can also check out reviews on Freetress’ half wig, Creta Girl.

  26. If the writer is interested in a longer-term solution (like a sew-in weave), then All About My Hair (AAMH) is an excellent alternative. You can google ‘aamh hair’ for pictures (I’d post my own but I’m wearing it as if it’s my own and I have too many friends who read this blog *shout out to bglh for being awesome!*).

I’ve also heard great reviews of Halley’s Curl. BlackHairMedia.com has a number of forums where people are discussing and comparing the various brands of natural-looking (ie, kinky-curly textured hair) weaves. They provide pretty much any detail that you could imagine (advertised length vs. actual length; shedding; how many packs you may need depending on the size of hair you want; etc.)

Again, these brands are a lot more pricey than what you may find at your local beauty supply store, but the information shared on the forums (as well as pictures) really helped me determine what brand would be best for the look I wanted to achieve.
Here’s a link to one of their forums:

  27. I have a wig by mowtown tress and it’s called lfe-dream. After a while(within a few days), the wig becomes a big afro. Here is the link to where i got my wig from http://www.beautyofnewyork.com/shopping/MPIN220310KX1029.htm

FYI: The picture does not do this wig any justice

If you want, you can check out how the wig looks on me.

    1. Uh… WOW!!!! that looks beautiful on you! what did you do in the ‘few days” to get it to fro out? did you tease it? comb it? spray it with anything? i WILL be purchasing this wig on pay day! was it shiny or anything?

      1. Thank you! everyone thinks it’s my real hair. I didn’t have to do much in order to get that look. At first the wig just looked like a fresh twist-out and then as the days passed, the curls began to look more kinky curly. I would sugest just finger combing it until you get your desired look.

  28. I know how you feel and I’ve been on the look out for one too.
La Jay or its shorter version La Apple by Vanessa Wigs are favs for a lot of naturals.
Then there is Drew by Beshee and for cheaper options there are Polly and Evony by Outre but for these they may require a bit of trimming especially Evony since a sort of Rick James cut lol.

  29. I don’t know of a wig but I do know of a few companies that make afro textured human hair that is fabulous. You can make a quickweave which is basically a wig where hair is glued to a stocking cap or just weave it up.I currently do a snap in weave where you attach tracks to clips and clip them in. You can find tons of videos on both of these techniques on Facebook. Zury makes hair called Zury Ultra Afro. His and Hers makes a Kinky curly weave. I am sure their are many more companies out there. Both of these weaves blend smoothly with a defined twist out.

  30. look at taren916 on youtube, she has quite a few natural looking wigs she displays, tells where she got them etc

  31. I wear a natural looking wig during my days off from work. I just went to my local beauty supply store and purchased a big curly wig. Of course i had to play with it and cut some bangs. But i really love it! Its synthetic hair i wish it was human hair tho.. I dont remember the name of the wig or the company that makes it..

Here a pic of me in the wig..

  32. This is a picture of my sister wearing a half wig last summer she brought from a neighborhood beauty supply store. I loved the curly/kinky texture, and even the funky color, which matched her hair (the color was actually an accident). Unfortunately, we’re Jersey girls, so this won’t help the writer much. But I wanted to share since there are some good natural looking wigs out there if you look hard enough. Btw, when my sister purchased it, the owner of the store thought she was crazy and that it was an ugly wig no one would want. Most women prefer the straight/wavy ones. Ha!
