Introduce yourself!
S:
My name is Tele1028 and I am from Cypress, Texas.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
S:
Relaxers were murder to my scalp. I hated preparing my mind for relaxer day. After that I started wearing braids and weaves and finally decided to see what my hair would do if I showed it a little TLC. I’ve been natural since 2007, but started taking care of it January 2012.

How would you describe your texture?
S:
My strands are fine and from what I understand about hair typing I am 4c all over except for one patch at the top left hand side, which grows in very limp and thin. My head full of 4c hair takes over and hides it very well.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
S:
I wake up every morning and my hair is usually in twists and twist outs or a bun. If it’s dry I mist with water and seal with olive oil, or I just use coconut oil. My hair and scalp LOVE coconut oil.

What does wash day look like for you?
S:
In my dreams I wash my hair every Saturday, but in reality I wash every 2 to 3 weeks. I am not an “It must be natural products or it’s wrong kind of girl.” I use Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. Before I begin I separate my hair in 6 parts. I detangle with conditioner and coconut oil. After I detangle I cover my hair with a plastic bag and let it sit a while while I clean, read or whatever. Next, wash and condition. Then I use Cantu Shea Butter for a leave- in and seal with olive oil and coconut oil. I also deep condition once a month with Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol Deep Conditioning Creme.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
S:
If I’m short on time I spritz my edges with water, put on a little Cantu, seal it with oil and high bun it.

How do you combat shrinkage?
S:
After I wash I let it dry in big twists. If I’m wearing a twist out I stretch it with a bun at night.

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
S:
That special patch at the top left corner of my head. I have to be very, very gentle. It tangles very quickly.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
S:
Moisture, oil and a satin bonnet at night.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
S:
Wash n go’s and the banding method (a dry tangled mess).

  1. You’re my inspiration! I was worried about going natural because I have 4C hair and I know how hard it can be to manage it compared to other hair types, but you have shone me that it IS possible to have long beautiful and healthy 4C hair. Thank you!

  2. Your hair is absoloutly freaking gorgeous! One day…i will have what you have 🙂 long lucious locks

    1. HI Raye! Pic 394 is a light blow out then I did chucky twist. This twist out only lasted a day 🙂

  3. Dont attack me lol…but i dont think she has 4c hair, looking at the picture where her hair is wet. 4c doesnt have curl/coil definition when wet and its much tighter than that!

    1. I think someone needs to look into this but I have a crazy theory: I don’t think it’s possible to have *no* curl pattern at all. When you think about it, your curl pattern is determined by the shape of the shaft of your hair. It isn’t like the shape of the hair shaft changes every month. I was once like you and I thought I was 4c because my hair didn’t have a noticeable curl patter. But then when I learned how to moisturized my hair properly, ALL OF A SUDDEN, after 20-something years, there it was. Curls. So should I no longer consider myself 4c? Negative. And oddly enough, this discovery is a pretty common one amongst the kinkiest of hair textures. I think that the 4c hair community at-large (lol) has a lot to learn about this type of hair.

    2. Hi Bonita! I’ve posted a pic of my hair wet without product:)

    3. Yes I was thinking the same thing. She looks to be 4b with a touch of 4a. Most 4c hair does not look like that when wet..I could be wrong…

  4. You are inspiration for us 4c’s chicas! I did a big chop and looking at your hair puts a smile on my face. Are you on youtube or fotki for a hair journey or just for hair or? 🙂

    1. Thanks April 🙂 Congratulation on the big chop!! I’m sorry I don’t have those accounts, but I am on Instagram “Tele1028” and I have a page on this site same name. God Bless

    1. I’ve been natural since 2007 and started wearing it at the beginning of 2012. Thanks Carolyn 🙂

    1. Hi jennifer! Wash n gos are beautiful and I love to look at them, but deal with them, no thank you 🙂

  5. Your hair is so lovely! I especially love that you use drug store products and not the super expensive stuff. It reminds me that I don’t have to break the bank to have great looking hair.

    1. Thanks Kayla. I was going insane trying to keep up with the Do’s and don’ts products for natural hair and it was too much!! So, I decided to keep it simple and if it works it works…. Enjoy your journey Kayla 🙂

    1. Hi Toni! Most days I’m in a bun or twists. I’ve given up the fight with Houston’s weather.. I take advantage of this time of year and wear my hair out as often as I can!!!!! Thanks my fellow Houstonian 🙂

  9. I am so inspired by you. I am one ear natural and trying to resist the urge to go back to relaxers. I need a better routine. I don’t think that I am doing a good job with moisture so my ends are pretty bad. Any recommendations?

    1. Hi 5ht! Freestyle braids are individual braids that stop where your hair ends and the rest is left free. I hope this helps:)

  13. you’re like my hair twin with long hair lol, been searching for you for the last 13 years. i’m curious about how you styled your hair before it was this long, just braids/weaves? wish you had a site 🙂

    1. Yaaaay my hair twin! I did a 4 year transition with free style braids. After my hair was too long for the free style braids I switched to full sew-ins. I have an instagram and I just created a page on this site. Both under the same name “tele1028”, I would love to help you as much as I can! Thanks for commenting ac 🙂

  14. Beautiful girl and beautiful hair. I’m glad that I found somebody with 4c hair because it seems like 4c’s get left out.

    1. Thank you mira! Our 4C hair rockssss :)…. I am creating a page on this site. Do you have a page too?

  15. Your hair is beautiful! It takes a long time an a lot of patience to get your to grow that long but it’s totally worth it. Your hair is gorgeous and very inspiring. You really laid those edges on your high bun too. Nice!

    1. Thank you juanita617. You’re right patience and love. I’ve had many trials and errors and still do. Not all days will be good but it is worth it. Enjoy your journey 🙂

  16. Im 4c and my hair goes pass my shoulders but it still grows up! I envy girls whos hair goes down when its wet(only bc in my perfect world I want to walk out the shower in front of my husband with my wet sexy hair only to have a tangled afro=[) lol anyways your hair is amazing! and you are beautiful!

    1. Thank you kourtne! Try washing you hair in big twist and untwist right before stepping out of the shower then make you grand entrance 🙂

  17. I have to say that this is one of my favorite natural hair icons ever. Her hair looks healthy and is gorgeous!

  18. my new hair inspiration!!!
your lovely 4c hair suits you so well.
My only question is did you stretch with heat to acheive the looks in the photos of you in the blue and black tank tops?
just curious because I’m really loving your hair like that

  19. So this is what 5-6 years w/ 4c looks like…Those twists are amazingly beautiful. I just finally got on a twist-kick. I also really like the updo with the blue scarf and that side-swept style with the orange scarf!

    1. Thank you JustLeavingaComment! It’s fun trying different styles. Even when I mess up I still ROCK IT 🙂

  20. “Banding method, a dry tangled mess”. Oh Yes!! I lost so many hair when I tried it because of the tangles.
    She has gorgeous hair

  21. This hair is gorgeous, and it’s so thick. She has such a pretty smile… Does she any type of blog or youtube acct or instgram that we can also follow as well?

    1. Thank you Zyaran! I’m way to shy for youtube lol. I am creating a page on this website and I have an instagram! Same name 🙂

  22. Gorgeous girl, gorgeous hair. I can relate to her because I’m guilty of not using 100% organic products on my hair. Most of the products I use on my hair can be found at any regular grocery store I.e. herbal hello hydration & Cantu Shea.

    1. Thank you Yabby! I haven’t had any problems with store bought products. My local super center HEB has everything I need 🙂

  23. Niiice, 4c hairinspo at the genesis of 2013! Gorgeous hair and love the simple no-fuss routine =)
