Back in January Ms Henson posted a photo on her Instagram account of what looked to be a voluminous natural blow out. We declared our excitement at Taraji being part of the undercover natural club, but were quickly checked by readers who pointed to her December 2012 Jet Magazine cover that seemed to feature a relaxed style.
But the questions are flaring up again with photos of Taraji yesterday at the Staples Center for a Los Angeles Kings game, rocking what looks like a natural puff.
I dunno ladies… it looks pretty natural to us!

I think we misunderstand the relaxed movement as naturalists. Some women don’t go for bone straight relaxed hair and are thus able to maintain some of the curl and ‘puff’ that is typical of natural hair. Let’s give Taraji a break and either vote up or vote down the style rather than trying to determine whether she is on the “natural” meaning not-chemically straightened bandwagon.
I honestly receive motivation from celebs who are in fact natural. They are in a world where beauty is more subjective and constraining. So to make a stance to go natural, remain natural and wear their natural hair is pretty deep. It makes me feel like, if they are doing it, there is no reason I can’t do it. Keep posting these pics. I love it!!!
I think that all of this discussion about other people’s hair choices is ridiculous. I, for one, have natural hair because relaxers damage my skin. However, more often than not, I have my hair blown out because it makes it easier to manage and is quicker for me since I wasn’t that young girl who stayed in the mirror learning how to style her hair and still haven’t mastered styling as an adult. I much rather go out looking like something with my hair straight than looking a wreck because I don’t know what to do with my hair and tire of the pulled back bun (which, by the way, is damaging to edges).
This is a hair blog-founded by a natural black woman-if you would like to start a blog about hair and not discuss current celebrity style or other women’s hair choices, then feel free. However, please note, those topics are kinda the point here…Otherwise, it wouldn’t be relevant… Honestly, the title and post were intriguing enough for you to read and participate in the discussion so its safe to assume that it is indeed a good topic to cover. yes?
I have natural hair that is longer than the weave I sometimes choose to wear. I know lots of people who love pixie cuts etc but don’t want to cut their hair so they get a short sew in weave and rock it for a bit without damaging their hair. I am sure she wears weaves, wigs etc for work…go Taraji
she is very much natural, she said it herself, she also stated that she wears sow in weaves because she does not want to put so much stress on her hair with styling.
I personally think that its useless to argue if her hair is natural or not. i think we all have different lifestyles and as women we choose what works best for us in terms of hair manageability. Relaxed or not, hair needs to be cared for daily. it seems to me that people are trying to convince each other that chemically altered hair is better then natural hair and vice versa but at the end of the day it is a personal choice and preference
The woman has so much more than hair going for her, the boots, the Daisy Dukes, she looks well toned and healthy, take it all in. And remember she is a hell of an actress. Get back haters.

I am baffled on the gibberish you women are talking about. How about talking about the chemicals that are in these so called “all natural” hair products. And the fact that 73% of all African American women or Obese! This is the root of the problem. Does it really matter what it is called or how it is labeled (chemical free vs. natural)? I personally use the term natural because it is a word I’ve become accustomed to using, so I shall keep on using it.
Starting with rocking a fro…um my hair becomes way too difficult to detangle after wearing a fro so that is why I choose not to do so. Now, the fact that I’ve had my hair flat ironed (once and never again. lol), wore my hair in extensions, and to whatever future manipulation I choose to do to my kinks does NOT indicate that I am ashamed, conforming or trying to get a European look (smh to the foolishness). I don’t know about anyone else, but I get bored easily with my hair so I like to switch it up often. It is about wanting a change…something different and not about conforming or hiding. Oh and it is sometimes about wanting a friggin’ break!
No one should be made to feel like they are ashamed, conforming or whatever because of how they choose to wear/style their hair. No one knows what I or anyone else thinks or feels when it comes to our hair…unless we tell them of course. Assuming you know someone’s heart and mind by simply looking at how they wear their hair, in my opinion is just plain ignorant!
My hair is natural because it’s in better condition that way and not because natural is in style. Trust me I do not follow what’s in style/fashion. I’m more interested in doing what I like than what everyone else is doing.
I do not feel like we should be ashamed of our hair in its natural state, but that doesn’t mean that we have to wear it that way if we don’t want to. I know that my naturally kinky/coily, fine, low-medium density, almost shoulder length hair is beautiful and that is regardless of how I choose to style/manipulate it.

Pardon my language, but what a dumb argument.
I think it’s dumb to argue about the purpose of the site. I think it’s dumb to argue about what races criticize each other. I also think it’s really dumb to even care whether taraji’s hair is natural or not. Who cares? Don’t be Natural nazis.
The fact of the matter is, women are fickle. Natural is in because enough women have dared to do it to make it desirable. If this wasn’t such a big “revolution” women wouldn’t be flocking in droves to do it. Hair companies wouldn’t be making products for this texture. If wearing tiger print fades became the thing tomorrow women would all be doing that.
If you ask me (and I know no one is, but I’m gonna say it anyway), more women need to be less concerned about what these celebs and even other regular behind women are doing if their natural struggle is the real deal. Do your research, watch your YouTube vids and learn how to take care of it, but leave it at that. the fact that you’re holding a magnifying glass to someone else’s head is hugged out. It’s hair, not a club house. If you’re living it, do that.
Many of us are switching to natural from relaxers for flexibility – duh – straight one day and curly / kinky the next.
We are who we are and a relaxer or any other process is not going to change that fact.
Blacks need to stop being so shallow and start to encourage, appreciate and honor each other. That is why there is so much black on black crime today.
Most blacks today do not have a clue of how to care for natural hair because of our history .. the wisdom and knowledge was lost with slavery. We are slowly learning how to maintain healthy hair.
Every woman regards of race or hair texture wants a change … straight want curly and curly want straight ..hence Japanese hair straightener, Brazilian Keratin, Wave perms, etc.
Lastly, just because a woman rocks a short hair cut does not mean she cannot GROW HER HAIR LONG ………DUH SCISSORS…SOME OF US LOVE SHORT HAIR STYLE …. CATCH A CLUE AND TAKE CARE OF WHAT IS ON YOUR HEAD AND LET OTHERS DO THE SAME!
How about this Ladies & Gents. Lets not worry about whether or not her hair is real, and appreciate the fact that a female celebrity has decided to show her hair (whether real or fake) in what is her “natural” texture. Let us also appreciate the fact that WE as a community are now using our power as consumers to slowly change and alter the standard of beauty to represent us. Since the “natural hair movement” has begun I have seen more books, blogs, videos, and new hair care products natural hair. I always walk into Target with a smile on my face, because the “natural” hair products have its own section featuring different shades and textures. Taraji isn’t the only one, there is Solange, Tomiko Fraser (gorgeous model), Wakeema Hollis, Nerissa Irving, Nikkia Phoenix, Sabina Karlsson and soooooo much more. There are women in the industry that are representing us, because these companies now realize that we want to see a representation of ourselves and are changing for US. I know every community has its sub communities and its divides, but let us try to back and support what a triumph this is. I would hate 10 years from now to hear someone say “Remember when wearing Natural hair was the trend?”
Yes Marquita, you do see other races of women raggin each other out over who’s hair is naturally blonde, or curly among other ways of criticizing each other. I see it all the time between white women. When my daughter visited Japan, she told me that many a yoing Asian females just love to spend their days spotting eye and nose jobs! Especially if their into cosplaying Anime characters. Those ridiculous procedures are actually rather big over there. A lot of Asian women getting plastic surgery to appear more European is very common. It is also very common for East Indians to compare skin color. I’ve seen these same criticism in Africa too. Skin lightening and tanning,changing hair noses,cheekboned, lips etc…women in general tend to judge each other no matter the race. What irks me, is when white women who date black men, think you’re angry at them? No one wants their man! Especially if he looks busted! I’ve also had white women acvuse me of wearing a weave. Women hate on each other bad for some reason. I have heard some pretty catty ish in my 38 years trust me! 🙂

I don’t think it’s her hair because her hair is extremely fragile and fine and she doesn’t have the type of hair that grows very long. But it doesn’t matter anyway. It’s her hair. Even if it’s a weave, so what! it is an attempt to wear natural hair or to appear like she is wearing natural hair. Who freaken cares?

So if it isn’t her natural hair, then what? Does she get kicked out the the club or something. All this effort is going into whether she is natural or not. Regardless, her hair is cute and I know this is a natural hair blog, but lets not resort to making rude comments about her hair. After reading the comments, I became very disappointed. As a couple made smug comments about the fact black women celebrate hair, I began to wonder if they ever took the time to do and read research on black women’s identification of self in a post and pre-a partied and post slavery day. Further more, this blog was created for women, who despite the social and popular view of what it means (or thankfully, meant in a lot of parts in this country and world) to be “nappy” (usually with natural hair, seen as unkept, and homely) in our culture, embraced the idea of natural hair as indeed beautiful. This (and still we don’t understand how huge this really is) is a truly revolutionary time for African American women. History, history, history. This isn’t to dig up or start a black panther movement, quite frankly because no one has the balls anymore to be completely unapologetic about a cause, but women – especially black women have struggled years with sexual identity and the idea of femininity in comparison to their female counterparts, namely in America. In fact as you look around the world, WOMEN, IN ALL SPECTRUMS, ARE STRUGGLING WITH THIS WORLD WIDE, so how dare anyone come to this blog, which promotes the excitement of women presenting themselves naturally and still as confident and as beautiful as the marketing charades of cosmetic enhancement? This blog is no different than a fashion blog, an art blog, or a product blog. Please women, do not undo the work and inspiration that this blog brings so many young black women in regards to skipping the compulsive need to straighten their hair to feel beautiful. No it’s not about forcing women into natural hair, but its a resistance against the medias way of forcing us all into relaxed hair. At the end of the day it is just hair, but could you believe something as minute as a couple of you women would make it, has made such an impact? If its just hair to you, why follow hair blogs at all, relaxed or natural?

I didn’t read all of your post, because it was rather long, but I will say this. A lot of women that are transitioning to natural, must still feel that “nappy” isn’t deemed beautiful, because so many are still trying to achieve the “European” look via flat ironing, Keratin treatments, and some have gone as far as texturizing to loosen their curl pattern! Only a select few are wearing their hair in Afrocentric hairstyles. So to me, the better term should be that you are “chemical” free versus saying you are natural. Manipulating the hair in any form is not natural. Also, black women aren’t pressured by the media to use relaxers, it is a lifestyle choice for some, because a relaxer makes the texture easily manageable. That is why a lot of people realize after transitioning, that natural hair doesn’t fit their lifestyle or their busy schedules. (Natural hair takes a whole lot longer to style) A lot of naturals are still flat ironing and pressing their hair to make it appear straight, so why not just go on and get a relaxer to make that easy to do? So a lot of naturals are still conforming to society with the straight hair. Very small percentage are rocking their fro’s in corporate America.
Marci, of course you didn’t read the whole thing because you will continue to come from a position of “im right”. You will even argue against something to confirm it in the next sentence. The fact that women do wear natural hair is important regardless of the percentage, we’re not talking about women who don’t, we’re talking about women who do. That sort of chemical damage to the hair is unhealthy, but people still smoke too. Sharing pictures of women in the corporate media with natural hair is to show that it is being done, hence the information and pictures… Hence the very reason you have a problem with not finding women in the corporate world and entertainment business who don’t wear natural hair is the reason this blog is here. You’re arguing against the representation of the solution to the very “statistics” you provided.

No, this blog is still not fully representing individuals in the industry who are fully “natural” or showing the world they are. This blog shows slight snippets of photos where the celebrity is still rocking a weave, as the case above where Taraji is wearing a weave ponytail. Which is not natural. Also, Taraji is a bad example to show as a celebrity being natural, because she always wears her natural hair under weaves, she straightens her hair to the point it appears bone straight that you can’t tell if she has a relaxer or not. Most of the celebrities are hiding their natural hair under wigs and weaves. Hence to prove my point that this blog needs to stop showcasing celebrities who are not actually “natural”. They still are achieving the European look in any way they can. As I said before, the same celebrities this blog is show casing as natural, will slap a relaxer back in their head the next week, because that’s the industry they are in. This blog has yet to show me a celebrity who is rocking Afrocentric hair styles 24/7! So it’s best just to not use any celebrity as an example or role model, or being on the “watch” to see if they are natural or not.
Why is it that we get so caught up in trying to prove ourselves to the world one way or the other? Do you see women of other races trying to justify why they get lip injections, why they wear weave, why they get butt implants, why they also straighten their hair etc.? We need to stop! at the end of the day do whatever you need to do to look your best of course within your comfort zone and just be confident and happy in your own skin…
I’d like to respond as to MAYBE why some naturals get offended by celebs who primarily rock weaves and wigs yet sites such as this hail them as “naturals”. Maybe ppl r so touchy bc as blks our beauty /race has been the one primarily picked apart,downgraded and marginalized by main stream america. We have endured centuries of external AND internal hate abt our features including our hair. So when women of color are bold enough & confident enough in themsleves to wear their natural hair in a world that tells them they must “tame that hot mess”…they could be offended by the very ones that confine & cloak their natural textures for what APPEARS not for their own preference but mostly to please the masses and to compete in their hollywood and music industry careers?Some take it as indicative our self-hate or lack of love for our hair in its natural state. Its fine hanging arnd the house but God forbid the media catches you without ur wig or weave, textured or not!
But on the other hand, Like some on here have said, why r we trying so hard to prove to anyone that we embrace our blackness, hair and all? Who is anyone to judge and tell me where i fall on the spectrum of “black hair pride”? Its a bit much that ppl get so up in arms bc Taraji wears textured weaves, sometimes wears it straight..you cant pls everyone and its her hair afterall.
Then again, maybe we could also embrace the fact that weave or not, a blk women rockin a textured style IS a statement of pride. Its says we arent the same as others and our hair is diverse and we embrace and celebrate our ability to be versatile. its debatable that relaxers make the hair more manageable. in my experience all i got outta the deal was breaking hair that couldnt retain length, and that’s the way it works for most women who undergo relaxer treatments for their hair. doesnt sound like easy management to me. contrast that to my natural hair, i may not be able to run a comb thru it, but that’s not how i would determine ‘manageable’. peace
I wore my hair natural for 15yrs, but recently decided to texturize it and can definatively say that relaxers aren’t necessarily more damaging nor is natural hair necessarily more resilient, but that how you care for your hair determines how healthy and strong it remains. Many naturalistas, myself included, have spent a great deal more time caring for their hair than they did when they wore it relaxed. Since deciding to chemically alter my hair, I have subscribed to the same level haircare I had before and my hair is still strong and healthy.
Many women of all colors and races flat iron and straighten their hair. I don’t use chemicals in my hair and I wear my hair curly or in a wavy pony tail. But when I blow dry my hair after I shower my hair straightens without even flat ironing it. I wear my hair straight sometimes just to have a different look. but I get more compliments when I rock my natural curls.
oan to the others:
Taraji doesn’t use relaxer in her hair. She puts coco butter on her hair regularly (why it looks so healthy) and she gets it washed blow dryed and flat ironed for the straight look. I do the same sometimes and people think I have a relaxer. I look my so-called nappy hair. Its so soft and beautiful and despite the curls it easily combs through even without detangler. I think a lot of women don’t know how to care for their natural and as a result run to a relaxer for easier maintenance.
Our hair just needs to be conditioned more than others. tip: conditioning our coarse hair is very important. Condition it at least once or twice a week and put she butter on your lovely strands every other day.
Oan I notice a lot of women locks and micro braids in corporate america.
re: Marcia– I honestly can understand some of what you’re saying. And sure, there are naturals and those transitioning who straighten their hair because they believe it to be more beautiful than their natural hair, which would point to an identity issue. However, the mere practice of straightening ones hair does not make them less natural. I think if your same standard was applied to White women, many would not be natural as heat is regularly used to both curl and straighten the hair. When heat or a chemical is added to the hair and permanently alters the structure of the hair, that’s when it is no longer “natural”. Afrocentric is a term that denotes someone who sees Africa as the center of everything. Black women embracing their natural hair is not an Afrocentric practice, it’s a matter of catching up to where our White sisters are already, using what grows out of our scalp as it comes out of our scalp. Natural hair is not in fact harder to manage than relaxed hair, as can be seen from the plethora of styles achieved, almost effortlessly, and the length retention that is more easily achieved as a natural.
MThe questions flaring up for me is what the hell is she wearing??? It’s not sexy at all. I guess because she has to wear a suit much on her show she needed to breakout…but this is not flattering. Hair is cute.

Her hair could be natural and still achieve a chemically relaxed look. Taraji could just be a fan of “keratin treatments”. Eventually, the treatment washes out but leaves the hair in a state where the curl pattern is looser and the hair is less kinky. This is what we could be seeing here without much product in her hair. If she is natural and routinely sports hair that looks chemically relaxed, her hair could just have been “heat trained” and thus more easily achieves a sleeker, straighter, “relaxed” look than most naturals when heat styled. If she says she’s natural, I believe her.
Either way she looks fab. Her hair looks healthy just a loose curl pattern. Looks like her hair is fine.
I was in the magazine section at a store & decided to look for black hairstyle magazines which I hadnt done. Since I was a teen. Yet there were only 2.one called “black hair” & the other I can’t recall. Flipping thru all I saw were relaxed hair & weaves. Is it necessary to create a natural black hair magazine just so we naturals can see the broad spectrum of styles that apply to us? And I have 2 agree with another poster, we blk women r the only ones obsessed with hair. I didn’t see “white hairstyle” magazines on the shelf. I can see why blk haircare is a billion dollar business of which few if any blks actually own.until black hair magazine show abroad view of blk hair instead of a few token shots here & there,the majority of blk little gilrs & women will continue to view natural as “alternative”or something that’s 2nd class. Hair is just hair. I just want to level the he playing field. So to speak when it comes to mainstream america allowing us the define what is beautiful for us as individuals & not them. Nothing is wrong with a perm,I just don’t want my natural hair to be a shock value staement! Its just my hair as it grows! Its not any type of statement. We put pressure on blk celeb women because we must acknowledge the stigma attached to our hair & we need someone to stand up and say ” this is me. Deal with it! @Imani Okay, you were the first natural person on this blog, to actually talk with some sense. I understand exactly what you meant, and you didn’t come across as hostile and defensive over hair. Anyway, it’s good to actually know that not everybody has gone overboard with this natural hair movement! There’s nothing wrong with embracing natural hair, the problem comes in when people start to judge other black women who choose to keep a relaxer, and become hostile and angry when someome has an opinion that differs from theirs. There shouldn’t be a need for a celebrity to make a woman feel comfortable sporting their natural hair. For one, I don’t use a celebrity as an example or a role model for anything, because the same celebrity that’s currently natural, could go get a relaxer the next week. That’s the nature of the industry they are in. So it’s best to DO YOU, & not use any one as an example or a role model.

I guess for me its just like telling a kid to be whatever they want to be but if we never see a black doctor or lawyer…its abt making the world see us as we are and not as they want us to be seen. I may not like india arie(btw,I luv her music) as a music artist but I can feel good that my neice can turn on a tv and see this pretty dark girl with kinky coils or a short fro rockin her music. Even as she is seeing beyonce shakin her long blonde hair all over the place! its the same reason mattel had to come out with blk barbies. They realized that ppl need to see themselves reflected and represented in the world they live in.its almost basic human nature to seek a familiar reflection. I would want my neice to aspire the talent of an angela bassette bc she sees herself in her.She wouldn’t know abt an angela if we didn’t force ppl to see our talent. Angela stands on the shoulders of many so I want to see me and yes my hair reflected back at me! I already luv me but that’s just how I was raised. i never understood that need to watch how much much black women spend on cosmetics. i just read the french edition of ELLE today and one of the titles was “30 ways to style your hair” (european hair of course) has anyone ever estimated how much women of other races spend on plastic surgery and cosmetics or is it normal for them to be interested in that?
i don’t know why you feel like black women are the only ones obsessed with hair (i’m not at least) what i know is that the other girls like to care for their hair too and actually see it as a beauty plus and no one is blaming them for that SMH

Why not just ask her? I am sure she would tell you if you asked her if it is indeed her hair. She stated once in an interview that the weave hair she uses is close to the texture of her natural hair, so it looks believable.

How can you look at someone with straight hair and tell if it’s natural or relaxed? Idk where some folks live, but I have a TON of friends who have been natural for years and their hair–and mine when I want it to–looks super sleek and straight like Taraji’s does on the cover of Jet when it is blown out and flat ironed. As @Mickie says: “it’s called a good stylist!”
And quiet as kept, my long RELAXED hair looked very much like Taraji’s does in the pics above. It was full, thick, wavy etc if I just washed it and didn’t add any heat to it. Loved it and love how Taraji is rocking hers, relaxed or natural!
You are right. I am relaxed and people always think my hair is natural (men and women) even when I wear it straight. Currently I did a bantu knot out last night and my hair is looking very fierce and fluffy and easily mistaken for natural. I don’t think it matters relaxed or natural. I do most of the same things that natural haired ladies do that is why I visit this site. I find it funny when taking with a natural friend and they will say oh you use kinky curly knot today how does that work on relaxed hair. I say the same way it works on natural hair it detangles. Just because the hair is relaxed doesnt make it stop being afro type hair. When its wet it shrinks up and gets tangles and even when its straight it still gets dry and needs moisture. same thing.

I am VERY natural. When I get my hair flat ironed I have relaxer like appearance. It is called a good hairstylist. He blow dries with a denman, presses my edges and flat irons using a comb chase. My hair is straight.

not necessarily. i and many others have gotten weaves shorter than our natural hair length especially when we feel like having a bob. plus you can get your hair bone straight without a relaxer…

That’s not celebrating a group of people or black women period when you focus on something so petty as how someone styles their hair. Trust me, I’m African American and I don’t sound like a white person at all. A white person reading these blogs would think you have gone crazy, to sit back all day discussing hair and if you put a particular product (relaxer) in your hair or not. To the average person, white or black it is strange. Yes, the tone of these articles and messages, sends the impression that you take issue with people with relaxed hair, which simply boils down to someone’s styling preference! Yes, it is devisive and it’s not uplifting! Yes, I don’t agree with using a word as strongly as ‘nazi’ but judging people based off of the way people style their hair is no different than people judging folks off the color of their skin like the Germans did. It’s not murdering people, but the behavior is extreme. I’ve found a lot of naturals get hostile about hair, when folks with relaxed hair, don’t care one way or the other how someone chooses to put a chemical in their hair or not!

i consider myself to be a normal black person and i did see anything wrong with showing a famous black person (even if i’m not familiar with that one) wearing textured hair in the public eye. i don’t have any issue with women who relax their hair it’s their choice and i don’t buy into the light skin/ dark skin debate neither. maybe relaxed hair blog don’t feature blacks stars with relaxed hair (don’t they really?) because… you see it everywhere?

This is a natural hair blog as other have pointed out. Most entertainers are fashion trendsetters. It’s interesting to see what new styles they are wearing. I think you’re being a little over sensitive. No one takes issue with people wearing relaxers. Personally, I have worn them for several years. I think relaxed hair looks good. Weaves look great, too. Blogs such as this one helps us learn how to style and care for our natural hair. It helps us better appreciate the beauty of our hair in its natural state.

Most relaxed hair blogs/forums don’t feature naturals. Most of those sites, blogs, and magazines exclusively feature celebrities with relaxed hair. It’s a statistical fact that while the natural hair movement is growing, most Black women are still relaxed so seeing a famous woman with natural hair can be a refreshing change to some of us – perhaps even an inspiration to other naturals. Some of us don’t need the inspiration but there are a number of YOUNG naturals – tweens, teens, sistas in their early twenties who feel a bit of affirmation from seeing naturals – famous or not. Also, I’ve been on a relaxed blog where the relaxed women are putting down or making fun of naturals. I know not all women who have their hair relaxed make a joke at a natural’s expense or tell naturals they need their hair “done” or that they should always use heat but the reality is plenty do. This and other natural sites helps those who choose to be natural and naturals shouldn’t have to apologize for that.

I find it hilarioius that people are so worried about her hair and whether it is natural or relaxed. Guess what I have 4A/4B textured hair. It’s curly, I can comb it out into a fro, or I can get a wash and blowdry or have it flat ironed and end up looking like I had a chemical relaxer applied.
Just because someone wears their hair straight does not mean it is relaxed, nor does it mean that they are not natural. Heck it could even be or weave or maybe it’s just the hair that grow out of their scalp. 😉

The hair looks wonderful, extensions or real, love it! I saw that game on TV, and Tom Cruise and his look-alike ‘adopted’ son Connor, David and Victoria Beckham and Justin Bieber were shouted out and shown on the jumbotron but no such love for Taraji 🙁

textured Does Not equal real (i.e. – grown from scalp). there are plenty of textured pony tails, half wigs, wigs, weave tracks, extensions not on tracks that can be bought at the beauty supply store. hair can be bought in all textures not just indian remy….
