Where are you from and what do you do?
S: I’m from Houston, Texas. I have a PhD in Human Development and Family Sciences. I’m an early childhood mental health consultant.
When did you go natural?
S: 2002. I never liked having my hair chemically straightened. I stopped relaxing my hair a few years before that. When I got the courage to chop it off I never went back.
I have worn all styles of braids since I was a child; cornrows to micros… My aunt braided my hair from 0-18 years. I used to change my hair style all the time. I am not fearful of cutting my hair.
What do you use in your hair?
S: This is an ongoing battle. When I find the right products, I will tell the world! When I had locks, I really liked the way the mango lime products held my locks.
Do you prefer natural to relaxed?
S: Natural. My last chemical burn was the last straw.

you are so beautiful! I just had big chop done two weeks ago.I notice i look more beautiful with my hair like this. It’s the real me and i feel good doing this. I’m sad because i wish i could had done this long time ago.

I’m a family Science major too. I’m graduating this Dec (undergrad). YAY Family Science!!! people always ask me “What is Family Science?”
Very nice :-), I commend you Syd and all my natural sistas. I didn’t always understand how much inner strength it takes for sistas to be (and become) natural and “go against this Eurocentric grain” in “our” conformist society. I always thought natural hair looks better on black women, it’s easier for me to see the beauty that god has given to y’all.
