Solange is known for mixing it up with braid extensions and wigs from time to time, but at last night’s CDFA awards the stylish singer showed off her gorgeous texture with a soft curly fro. I’m loving it! What do you ladies think? Close up pics are below. All photos courtesy of TheYBF.com.

Well you know, the thing about her hair should de left alone. This is her natral hair texture, so she i wearing it in a naural hair style. I see nothing wrong with it at all. She is in great shape, healthy, and wearing a goodlooking garment. I think that if she were wearing her hair as how many people who are conditioned to think that the white standard of beauty should prevail over all then then that group of people ould be happy. That same group who complain would be happy and then would start to call here the most beautiful woman in the world. That so-called white standard of beauty over all others…not everyone agrees with it. And this includes all colors down the line from Black, brown, beige and white. People…let her be happy with her hair of lambs wool. There is NOTHING wrong with. Beauty does come in ALL colors, we need to understand this and stop the nonsense.
Confession: I wanted to see Solange’s hair texture. Not because I wanted to categorize her as being superior (having “good hair) or less superior (not having “good hair”) which is clearly not true, but because I wanted to see progress. I wanted to be encouraged a sister out there with kinky curly hair rockin’ it with boldness. That’s super encouraging!!! It’s the kind of thing that sends adrenaline rushing through your body. Rockin’ her God given beauty!!! No matter the curl type. However in today’s culture there is still much approving of doing this only when your natural beauty fits the status quo of whats been considered acceptable as beauty.
I went natural after thinking about it for years. I do not know what the hold up stemmed from, but I have never felt so free. I love Solange’s hair and her style choices. She inspires me because she did not go “natural” based on a movement. It was more or less based on economics. My decision was based on health and economics, as well as showing my daughter to embrace herself fully by leading by example. All of this hair type hype and good hair debate really makes me physically ill. It is like we as a people have this innate drive to compare one to the other. Light skin, dark skin; good hair, bad hair. Its enough to make me puke. Get over your selves and learn to truly appreciate uniqueness in one another. #praisingGodthatwhenhemademehebrokethemold. There is no other you
I have to say that I think that typing hair is necessary to know what certain products will do. What I use on my hair will not necessarily work the same way on somebody else’s hair who is curlier or straighter that mine.
I don’t think hair typing degrades, I think it educates. It sure helped me alot. My hair grew in 2 years from my collar bone to past my cleavage. Before knowing the hair types, it was at a standstill for 8 years. Now, it won’t stop growing. Because I can see who has the same type and what products are used. So, hair typing is very educational, for me.
it seems like there is always commotion in the natural community. we should all just go back to relaxers, at least we never had all this hair type arguments and what not..some naturals are really annoying..mind your own business and let ppl wear their hair the way they want to be it wig, weave or out..seesssh!!
First, everybody just relax! Let’s not allow anything about us be used to divide us-as women as naturals. Listen Solange is ultimately being her most authentic self and that is beautiful. Solange get your life-naturally,
We as women who have decided that for whatever reason we won’t chemically alter our hair should stand-shoulder to shoulder- stand and be authentically true to ourselves. We are all different in every way, but we are all embracing our God given crown the way it was given to us…so let’s embrace what we do share and embrace our fellow naturals. It’s so simple…get your natural on anyway you choose.
I say we honor solange’s request and leave her the h-ll alone about her hair. Why is she being singled out all the time.
Let’s not make hair idols. Anyone’s hair is good hair for them. Are we the only group in the world that has to make hair idols concerning there natural texture.
I don’t care what she does with her hair. It’s none of my business. My hair is my business.
My hair is EXACTLY like hers same length and errr ting lol… and people come at me all the time asking what I put in it or saying I have so called GOOD HAIR I never do anything to it no trimming or too much grooming it I just let it be and wash it …other people with different hair textures always come at me worrying about why this or why that about my hair accusing me of texturizing or telling me I need to do more styling because it looks UNKEMPT lol … I have a natural IMO this means I am going to let my hair do what it do no styling no chemical no nothing but wash and let dry ……….and my whole point is there are people who want your natural to look a certain way they scream natural but when a real natural is around they want to see how GOOD your hair is same thing with this chic she obviously has a nice head of hair and she should be commended considering her sister is the lace wig queen of the universe that she chose to do her own thing it looks good its natural and whatever texture she has is irrelevant because its natural
**CFDA awards, not CDFA. Sorry, but as a fashion student the mixup bothers me lol. Solange looks great, as always!!
That dress is divine.
I’m just glad she’s wearing her OWN hair out-and-about again. Good to see that, esp. in the entertainment world!
I must say… those shoes are where its at!
Ok, I have to agree with everyone else..this site is really reaching right now. That looks like a moisturized twist out. Please clarfiy what you mean by “good” hair because in my opinion, HEALTHY hair is considered GOOD HAIR. I am actually not a fan of this look simply because I think she needs to shape this style to fit her face. Her hairline is very masculine and in my opnion I would like to see her with a little move hang around the face. But that’s MY OPINION! Don’t shoot me for having one. I have to agree that her hair looks HEALTHY.
Two thumbs up to all the ladies that gave compliments or not…
But (make that a big ol’ Nicky Minaj butt) the debates on her texture, whether or not she weaves or wigs and whether or not the close-up is provided to categorize if she has “good” or “bad” hair is SSSSSOOOOO exhausting!!!! UUGGGHHH! I skim through comments to make it down to the bottome of the page to leave my own, but getting down here is somewhat of a drag to read all the back and forth about F*ckin nonsense (oops! sorry I guess everyone is entitled to thier own opinion)!!! I mean, I do the quick skim because I truly RESPECT differing opinions but S*it! Can we have one article were there isn’t a pointless debate. Just leave your comment about the topic and cus each other out later 😉 OR challenge: not at all?
So if you can style your hair into a fro then it’s not classified as we like to put it in quotations even though we really mean, GOOD HAIR? Some of you are ignorant and need to stop.
Wow-the heat coming off this discussion, I can feel it through the screen-lol! I think her hair looks fantastic. And I don’t think it looks messy or unkept, I actually like the fact that some of her hair is coily and other parts not so much. My hair looks much the same. Also, Effia, you said it best-thank you for reminding us what this site is all about-to remind us and the world that our hair is fantastic! Other folks are “jealous” at how many different looks we can acheive! I also think this site is here help us “heal” old wounds about our feelings regarding our hair. It goes way back ladies, at 48 and Fab, I can testify :-). I have been having so much fun, experimenting since I’ve been away from the chemicals-every day it’s a slightly differently look! Ladies, have your strong opinions, but don’t forget to add some understanding and kindness every now and then-you can still get your word in! Blessings to you all 🙂
I swear some of you women look too deep into these articles. IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS! Who wants to look at someone’s hair from far away (on a hair site) versus up close.
Goodness…
I believe the debate about “good hair” isn’t necessary. What’s important (or at least the important purpose) about this post is Solange and her style, natural beauty, and a chance for people to see her hair type up close. I have personally have always been curious about her hair type and whether I could attempt some of the styles of her’s that I’ve admired. I believe she looks very cute, her style is her own and she owns it well!
Love.
Love the dress! Wish I could wear that much yellow but just doesn’t work w/ my skin tone. Not overly loving the look of the hair but that’s her signature style.
I have to be honest I don’t always like Solange’s outfits or makeup selections, but this look has to be one of my favorites. She looks wonderful! Although the orange lipstick she favors looks good with some of her outfits, I’m glad she picked a new color for this event. Also, her hair looks great! I don’t believe natural hair has to always be picture perfect to look good! I can definitely appreciate natural hair of all textures, even when they are very different from my own. I have to reiterate what the other ladies have said, “Good hair is healthy hair!” It has nothing to do with one’s curl pattern or lack thereof, at all. We really need to stop focusing on the old “good hair vs. bad hair” debate. It is time for us to evolve!
Everything about her is soooo underwhelming…but yeah! team natural.
Solange is my FAVORITE Knowles sister. I appreciate her fresh and sometimes unconventional style! BTW, her hair is cute too!!
I’m really glad she’s wearing her natural texture! I love her style. but it does look like she’s in need of a trim, and maybe an oil treatment..
I love Solange, her sol-angel and haley street dreams album has a permanent spot in my car. I love that she found her “voice” and no longer has to say “I’m no sister, just my God given name.” Oh yeah…her hair is great! Love the dress and her makeup.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the up close pics to see her texture had NOTHING to do with JUDGING her texture (good hair? SERIOUSLY?!?!?). Perhaps it was because she usually has braids or other extensions, or maybe it was to show other naturals who share the same texture and may have been curious. Just MY opinion …
I love her look and all, but I’ll reserve my praise for when I see proof that it’s not just a phase! A whole lotta people just going natural to “be a part of the movement”, but as soon as the trend changes, they’ll be RIGHT BACK at the creamy crack! :-/ I’ll NEVER go back and that’s what I want young girls to see! This is you, not some temporary fad or trend, and there is NOTHING wrong with you just the way you are!
Cute but I don’t like the dress. her dynamic hair is making the dress look frumpy. I would have loved to see something flowing and bold. Lovely hair!
Love seeing that Solange has come into her own. She floundered for a while trying IMO to compete with her big sis. I simply love, love, love Solange’s hair (required 3 loves – LOL) and style.
beautiful.
i love her in yellow. i have a couple of yellow dresses. i need moooorreee though. lol.
That dress looks absolutely beautiful on her. I love seeing her with her natural hair out.
I love the wild almost “unkept” look of her fro, I believe it makes it more interesting. I love her outfit as always but she always looks good in my eyes. I just wish she would have worn earrings. Just a personal pet peeve of mine.
Forget the hair, gimme the shoes!!!!!!!!!!!
She looks beautiful and I love the dress.
Gorgeous 🙂
THAT DRESS!!!..it’s just…I WANT IT!!!
For some reason, I’m not feeling the hair this time; maybe it’s the shape?…
I think it says real texture because she has been known to wear afro wigs.
I love it, not a fan of her look but a big fan of the hair.
Not my favorite look of hers.
Making me kind of think about what it would be like if I cut my locs off. She looks exquisite!
Solo can never do wrong in my eyes, she looks fab!!!Love the dress!!
The shoes are awesome! She looks great!
Beautiful
I love her hair!!! *swoon*
Her outfit’s gorgeous too and her makeup is on point.
🙂
She looks absolutely beautiful!
it looks so soft!!
Pretty as always 🙂 Love her style.
Beautiful! She looked great.
GORG!!! She looks amazing. I have a small girl crush on this chick..lol. anyone know who the dress is by?
She’s wearing Marni from the S/S ’12 collection.
Tks! I was thinking ‘forget the hair’! I need a closeup of the outfit and those accessories! It comes together so nicely, I really like Solange’s look in general, including her angelic hair.
She wears yellow really well!
She looks great but why is it necessary to see her “texture up close” to see if its “GOOD HAIR”?!?!!? SMH…
What???? ^^^ I’m not saying her hair is not good, but It’s clearly not “good hair’, you could see that without a close up by the way she has, ummm, a ginormous, poofy afro.
I’m not sure about your “it’s clearly not good hair” statement. I thought we had done away with that rubbish. All hair is good hair when it is moisturized, healthy and well taken care of regardless of curl pattern or texture!!
Agree. Clearly, her hair is fine. Naturals, can we please get on board with eliminating the term “good hair” from our vocabulary. It’s going to kill our movement!
The title says an up close of Solange hair texture..
Why is it important to see her hair texture??
To see if its a 4a or 4c, I really dont care about her hair texture and to me each time a NATURAL brings up HAIR TYPE it goes back to the GOOD HAIR DEBATE weather you wan to admit it or not!
I am not saying that her hair is not good. I have kinky hair myself. Love fros, locks, twists, etc. I was responding to B’s original statement. “why is it necessary to see her “texture up close” to see if its “GOOD HAIR”?!?!!? SMH…””
That struck me as odd, because why would you need a close up to see if it is that typically silky, wavy “good hair”. It is clearly afro-kinky hair. Why can’t the site just put up close ups of kinky hair because readers like and want to see pictures of kinky hair.
My comment was directed to the articles title:
SOLANGE REAL TEXTURE UP CLOSE!!
My comments stands and I made my opinion very clear, why is it necessary to see her HAIR TEXTURE???
To see if its kinky, curly, coily, nappy, wavy, silky, which all goes back to the GOOD HAIR DEBATE…PERIOD!!
B, what is your fixation with “good hair”? Who cares! If a picture is posted of her “texture up close,” then maybe it’s because the author thought that readers would like to see Solange’s hair upclose! You can’t deduct that it’s just to see whether her hair texture is “good” or not. That is poor logic.
Besides who decides what good or bad hair is? I have 4a/4b hair and can’t even count how many times people tell me I have “good hair.” I correct them and and my hair is no different than anyone else, I have just learned how to keep it healthy.
It seems like you’re projecting insecurities about your hair….
I second that emotion. Well said.
+1
@LANDRY….No fixation, just keeping it real! Why is the article title SOLANGE REAL TEXTURE UP CLOSE??!?!
So folks can judge and put her hair in a catergory. Dont act as if this good hair debate is something new, this the entire basis of the hair typing system! I called it the way I see if and if you dont care thats your prerogative but to further prove my point check out all the comments on Curly Nikki regarding Solanges interview with Essence…its all about her hair type!
I think they are saying her real texture because she doesnt always wear her natural hair. She sometimes uses extensions that are similar to her hair texture. I dont think it has anything to do with good hair versus bad hair. It says “Solange is known for mixing it up with braid extensions and wigs from time to time, but at last night’s CDFA awards the stylish singer showed off her gorgeous texture with a soft curly fro.”
I personally think it looks like she woke up and hand picked out her fro. Not her best natural look in my opinion.
I agree. Overall I think her hair is OK, but it does look like she needs a trim and natural does not mean unkempt.
They also might have made a point of saying that it was her hair texture close up because every time Solange Knowles leaves the house someone is posting her picture on a natural hair blog. So the title might be more saying, “Have you seen a MILLION pictures of Solange’s natural hair? Well, look at this one because it’s slightly different.”
This is rediculous, she wears her hair how she wants and that is all that matters. This should not be a big discussion….her hair texture shouldn’t matter.
Yeah, she tends to wear a lot of “natural” weave!
But I don’t have a problem with her hair as much as I have with that lipstick color, a bright red would have been hawt with that outfit!
And yes, it is always about that natural curly hair! To have it or not to have it, that is the question. I have some UFD Curly Magic so it’s all good!!
I agree that this article is probably about seeing what Solange’s real hair looks like since most of the pics we see are her wearing a sew in or a wig. I haven’t seen her real hair since she first went natural a few years ago.
I understand your POV. However, I think the article title may be penned that way because we see many photos of Solange with wigs or braids in. I’ve seen many comments on previous posts that are dismissive because it’s not the persons texture. I’m thinking this may just be pointing out that the above pic is of her OWN texture, regardless of what it is.
I’m just wondering why you think the hair typing thing is related to a good hair/bad hair debate? Isn’t it obvious that people’s natural hair textures differ? Thick hair…thin hair…coarse hair…porous hair…kinky…coily…curly…I could go on.
How would you propose hair differences be categorized? Or should they not be categorized at all…even if it helps people with similar hair types correspond and collaborate?
+1 i can’t treat my hair type 4 hair the same way my curly type 3b friend does b/c i will end up w/ damage & what works for her doesn’t work for me & vice versa.
hair typing can be beneficial
the whole purpose of hair typing shouldn’t be to cause division but to educate. if we don’t recognize the differences we’ll keep doing what works for someone else & not getting their results..
we need to obliterate hair typing all together just to become accepting of our own…
know you were created by GOD & He does not make mistakes, you are beautiful no matter what your hair texture. So, see value in yours even if it is different than someone elses.
correction: ** we DON’T need to obliterate hair typeing all together just to become accepting of our own…**
Correct me if I’m wrong but is this the first picture posted on this blog that shows the hair “Up Close”??? Maybe the intent was not to show what texture hair she has or if its “Good Hair”, BUT to shows it HER hair. As she is known to wear wigs from time to time. So they may have wanted to make that distinctions.
Why all the knit picking our the close up shot, I thought we all appreciated see naturals up close. #PeaceLovePrayers
I agree. There is no such thing as good hair, but when the naturals again categorize their hair texture it implies the same thing. My hair curl pattern is “better” than yours.
I concur…I get so worn out by “us” and this good hair (southern backwoods slavery mentality) crap. Your hair is your hair and it idbbeautiful no matter HOW you rock it. Natural, relaxed, weave, pin curls, pigtails….jeeeeeez I wish we would stop being our own worst enemies. It’s just hair folks…
THANK YOU!
>:-(
@Jessica Agree! “Good hair” is such an ignorant statement. She has a beautiful head of hair. That’s it!
I dont think the title was in reference to whether she has “good hair” or not, but rather she is a natural hair model for Carols daughter,is representing products, and recommending other women to use them for healthy hair. For women who are transitioning or contemplating using Carols daughter products, they may be curious as to Solange hair texture in trying to evaluate if they should invest in those products.
And forget good hair, i damn sure want to know if her hair is healthy or not!lol Shes recommending products, and if her hair appears dry, patches of straight hair (she does straighten her hair every know and then),thin edges(from weaves braids, etc), i aint using a damn thing she recommends! LOL (so yeah, thanks bglh for posting an up close and personal shot<3)
Very well put! People’s hair texture matters to me when it comes to what products work for them and which don’t. If their texture is different than mine, that information isn’t of much use to me. AND, now that I have seen Solange’s actual texture, I see it’s almost spot on to mine. I’m more inclined to try the products she endorses now, as I had not intention of doing so before even though people kept suggesting I should.
If one is always looking for something negative, they will always find something negative. Regardless if it actually is negative or not.
B….really….
Where did you get the idea that “Solange’s Hair texture up close” = Good hair????????? LOL.
Talk about REACHING and HARD to make something out of nothing. Good job 😉
Haha, really though!! And then more debates branch off.. everyone needs to have a seat.
Maybe cuz ppl want 2 see how good her hair looks up close and personal. And by good I mean healthy, shiny, curly and lush and natural. YOU obviously have some insecurities concerning “good” hair bubbling at the surface of your conscience for you to initiate the “Good Hair” debate. YOU initiated it. No one else did. So don’t get defensive when ppl call you on it. SMH back at ya, honey!
Who said anything about “GOOD HAIR” why wud u even ask that question :S ? the entire purpose of the website/blog is to show the diverse unique and beautiful variety of kinky curly and coily hair that we are blessed with world wide. A close up would allow for women to identify with her texture esp since it is no secret she wears wigs and braids. Like it or not it is women like Solange that are in the spot light that will truly change the face of Afrikan/black beauty commercially…just by being brave enough to wear their God given texture. So why not get a look up close at why our many varieties of black hair is so beautiful. We are so quick to put words peoples’…there is not a single insinuation about good vs bad hair in the picture or caption. You my dear did that all on your own.
bless
Thank you Efia for the reminder of what this site is for. I just posted, I apologize for mispelling your name 🙂
This girl is a banger and I’m loving that she is embracing the beauty that is her glorious natural hair. That’s all.
ABSOLUTELY!
