Where do you live?
R: I live in Florida. I’m an entrepreneur and senior undergraduate student getting my degree in Business Marketing.
Why did you go natural?
R: I was soooo bored with relaxed hair and on top of that my hair wasn’t growing very fast and I had color damage.
My mom went natural fall 2007 and after my husband saw her hair at dinner he was like “Babe does your real hair look like that?” I laughed and my mom said yes Rochelle’s hair is gorgeous. After dinner I told my husband, “I’m going natural.” At the time I had micro braids in but I was so eager to go natural that I didn’t wait to take them out. I went into bathroom one day and just cut them out from the root. I was left with about 1/2inch of hair and I LOVED IT!..and so did mommy and my hubby!
I now feel free to be whoever and whatever I want to be. I have always been independent but I still use to think I had to keep up with certain standards and now I set my own standards. I’ve set out to learn more about Africana culture also since the big chop. It’s amazing having natural hair, overall I just feel free to be creative with my hair, dress and life.
Your YouTube channel is awesome! When and why did you start it?
R: Thanks I started In October 2008. I began making videos to share my natural hair journey and all the new things I was learning along the way. I wanted to make other women feel inspired as we learn from and support each other.
Why do you think it’s grown to be so successful?
R: I think my channel is successful because I am honest with my subbies and I genuinely care about them. I love making other people feel good about themselves. I’ve never been a fake/pretend to be perfect and do perfect person, I make hair mistakes and I keep it real and show the good and not so good, in hopes that others will learn from me. I love to share my hair experience and my channel allows me to do so.
What’s your regimen?
R: Alikay Naturals Product Usage Wash Steps
Step 1: Caribbean Coconut Milk Shampoo (not so dirty hair) or Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo (very dirty hair)
Step 2: Caribbean Coconut Milk Conditioner
Step 3: Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner (dry hair) or Blended Therapy Hot Oil Treatment (extra dry)
SEAL THE MOISTURE (Steps 4-6)
Step 4: Lemongrass Leave In Conditioner
Step 5: Shine Crave Hair Glosser
Step 6: Moisture Rich Hair Parfait (dry hair) or Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer (extra dry hair)
Note:
If I have a lot of product build up Step 1 becomes Bentonite Clay Treatment.
If my hair feels very dry and in need of love I do Blended Therapy Hot Oil Treatment Before and deep condition same time. So it becomes Step 3.
If I just took down braids or some reason my hair is super tangled I use Knots Be Gone Hair Detangler but if it’s a little just normal detangling I use conditioner in shower
If my hair doesn’t have product build up and is pretty clean I skip Steps 1 and 2 and use Cowash me Cleansing Conditioner to Cowash my hair, which gets it clean
What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
R: Wow I for sure made a lot of mistakes my first time going natural which is why after 1 year I did a second big chop on December 7, 2008.
#1 I used Denman to detangle which tore my hair out (Now I use my fingers or wide tooth comb)
#2 I colored my hair 6 times in 1 year (solution I went back to black and retouch when needed)
#3 I didn’t do regular treatment so hair wasn’t getting TLC (now I treat my hair every weekend)
#4 I was PJ so used random products many of which were drying and I couldn’t understand why my hair wasn’t flourishing (I only use Alikay Naturals products now, and my hair is healthier than its ever been)
What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
R: 3 things…I do a hot treatment of some sort each weekend. I also moisture daily, I don’t know how my hair ever survived without my Shea Yogurt Moisturizer. I sleep with satin cap/pillowcase EVERY night.
Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
R: Oh yes of course http://www.blackonyxworld.com/ , That’s also where you can find my hair products Alikay Naturals and jewelry Nyamani Chic.
Anything else you want to add?
R: Yes(of course b/c you know I talk a lot..lol) Embrace your natural hair the journey isn’t easy but it’s worth it and I’m still learning. Remember to be true to yourself always and love yourself inside and out. Don’t let anyone tell you who to be and how you should look, you determine that based on what makes you happy.

GO BLACK ONYX!!! too damn fierce.
Love your hair girl! Work it out!
I detangle with a Denman. I have no breakage but I also don’t have trouble with tangles at all. I mean my hair doesn’t get tangled easily. Is it just me but when I hear people talk about detangling I can’t really relate?
