Black Girl With Long Hair
Nakku Justine has become something of a viral sensation after she appeared on Nigerian news site Nigeriancamera.net. The 25-year-old operates her own lucrative 6 acre farm in Nigeria producing dairy, cabbage, cereals, carrots and poultry.
Images of Justine working the land were swiftly shared on social media, with many marveling at the sight of a young, black woman in a field that skews older and male.
Here in America, despite blacks’ historical relationship with agriculture they have been largely shut out of the farming industry due in part to the denial of USDA loans. African Americans currently account for just 2% of the nation’s farmers — a number that has declined from 14% in 1920.
Here’s hoping we see more young, black women working the land.

So AWESOME! A brilliant entrepreneur—and she’s in the exact field that will hopefully see an explosion of numbers for Black women, and their men—food production. With our toxic food supply in a state of collapse due to the disastrous farming practices of corporate agribusiness and multi-national chemical companies like Monsanto; people will need to get back to basic farming to maintain their very lives. Black folks can even set up farming cooperatives to produce healthy food—the Muslims here in the US ventured into that field decades ago, and they were famous for producing clean, delicious food; including those famous and unforgettable bean pies. The land is calling Black folks back to fix the mess in the farming industry and put their own stamp of genius on a clean, safe food supply. Our young farmer is inspiring!
There is so much I don’t know about the history to present of these poor dear slaves. The present is more in hiding than the past but it is a continuum. Being a white person at birth puts me in the ignorant class in America and I hate it.
