In January, we introduced you to Ghanaian-born New York artist Dennis Owusu-Ansah, who reimagined famous black Americans with traditional West African attire and names as an opportunity to educate others about his culture. Today, we introduce you to Ethiopian artist Gelila Shenkut, who — along similar lines — recreates prominent black individuals in colorful African-inspired (e.g., North, West, East) garments and jewelry against natural backdrops.
The artistic process Shenkut uses is called digital drawing and is demonstrated in her Instagram videos. Check out her amazing masterpieces that follow:
