Lauren Elyse is no doubt gorgeous and incredibly skilled when it comes to makeup. The Chicago-based artist currently has over 165k followers on Instagram, and absolutely masters every look she tries out. But what makes her different is that she often does tutorials and posts pictures that do not hide her vitiligo using #vitiligobabe. In an interview with Boohoo, she states:

I developed vitiligo on my knees and elbows when I was around 6 years old which only progressed as I got older. I was extremely insecure about it even just a few years ago. It wasn’t until I was about 21 that I decided to try to embrace and flaunt it. It took me some time to step out of my comfort zone, but I feel so much better about it now.

Normally, the color of hair, skin and eyes is determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning.

Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, but it may be more noticeable in people with darker skin. The condition is not life-threatening or contagious.”

Often people with vitiligo feel self conscious about the disorder and use makeup to cover up the lighter spots on their face and body. Although model Winnie Harlow has increased the visibility of those living with vitiligo, it is still typically seen as something to be covered up.
