Brazilian photographer Kevin Yule teamed up with Mukuna Dreadlocks, a Salvador-based beauty salon for a 4-part photo series named after the studio. The salon’s founders, Claudio and Victoria were moved to share their experience in the series after Yule expressed interest in the adversity they faced with loc’ed hair:
I ( Claudio ) and Victoria (wife ) we were still in college, and decided to put on dreads as a form of empowerment. After that, the labor market was completely closed to us, in a way we did not understand. Nobody wanted to hire us in Salvador. Victoria was pregnant and things were pressing more and more, and that’s when we decided to learn the process of locking hair”.
