Naturals have a testy relationship with black salons. It seems that if they’re not overcharging us, then they’re providing poor service, or even trying to sneak keratin treatments into our hair! And although there are plenty of great natural hair salons, it seems the bad ones heavily outnumber them. But New York entrepreneur Folake OguntebiĀ is seeking to revolutionize black salon culture with Goodhair; a quick service salon chain providing quality hair care for naturals at a reasonable price;

The company’s vision is to reinvent textured hair care by offering a service that’sā€œgood for your hairā€Ā (using natural, non- toxic products designed to keep textured hair healthy) and ā€œgood for your scheduleā€Ā (fast service, online booking, extended hours to accommodate different schedules) in a way that’s ā€œgood for the worldā€(eco-friendly, respectful employment practices).

Our offerings will be limited to two quick services- 1) Wash and Blowout (straightened styling) 2) Wash and Style (curly styling).

Both styles cost just $65

Goodhair will use product lines many naturals are familiar with, including Karen’s Body Beautiful, Oyin Handmade and Original Moxie.

Here’s a quick breakdown of their service menu:

They’re currently hosting a pop-up salon in New York city but their grand opening is expected in 2016.

What do you think of the concept? Would you be willing to try a quick service salon?

  1. I’m mad this is in NY tho. I just want someone to be able to detangle my hair gently…the lowest of 3xpectations.

  2. Hell no I only pay 50 a month for my braided updo at this braided salon ( with my real hair ) and my hair is very healthy and growing . If I wanted to get my hair blow out I would go to my grandma’s stylist since she does the best blow outs on natural hair .

  3. Love the Idea but these prices though (oT-T)?. $65 dollars for them to wash, condition, and put in a french braid. You gotta be kidding me, 20 dollars for a trim? If you want it blownout You might as well find your local Dominicans

I really want to support Black Business, But I also want to be able to feed myself

    1. Most salons in NY charge double that for natural hair, and even the “Natural Hair Salons” there are ridiculously expensive so this is a catch in my book

      1. Oh my, I’m just a state away and had no idea the price disparity was that large

  4. Yes and I agree with Camille. I have uber thick hair and that extra cost kinda makes me feel penalized. It would be cool if they come to Chicago

  5. Good for ms. Oguntebi. The prices are high but I could see myself going to the salon for a special occasion or something along those lines

  6. Am I the only one that things $65 is exessive? Especially because that doesn’t include tip. I can just go to a Dominican salon and get the same services for $30!

  7. That’s a good price. I don’t think we should have to pay double for having thick hair.

    1. I think it’s a fair price as well. But what about people with incredibly thick long hair? Wouldn’t that mean more product being used? Some of us complain about how long it takes to do our hair and the amount of product needed so it’s only fair that a good stylist makes their profit right? For the extended time needed and extra product used? No?

      1. I think it depends on what people want done to their hair. I only need 6 twists for a twist out, but I rarely see people charging by the twist. I would pay more for more twists.

I’ve never shown up with tangled hair at a salon, and the amount of product doesn’t warrant the extra amount people charge most of the time. Unless they are going to give me the whole bottle it shouldn’t cost THAT much more. I’m ok with charging more for length, but not texture.

I think it’s misleading for someone to say they specialize in natural hair but set their prices on a scale that would charge less for straight hair. Natural hair isn’t hard if you know what you’re doing.

        1. Well I don’t agree with charging more or less based on hair texture I was only talking about the thickness as in having high density hair. But yea, great points, charging more for length and or depending on the style is fair enough.

  8. I know they have to make money but it seems they nickel and dime you at every turn. I would expect at least a light dusting of the ends/split ends included in that $65 but its extra. Im all good on that.
