Introduce yourself!
M:
Hey curlies! My name is Megan (or MeMe), and I am from Upstate NY (Near Syracuse, and Buffalo).

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
M:
I have been kind of an on/off natural my whole life. My mother is a hairdresser and I begged her for a relaxer when I was about 15…She finally gave in when I was 16. LoL. At that point, I was retouching every 2-3 months. I eventually started to wait 6 months or so in between. Not too long after is when I realized I really didn’t need it, so there were times I wouldn’t even bother, or times I would do a quick texturizer, just to loosen my curls in the summer.

Since I would go so long in between relaxers, I started to actually see my texture and realize that I loved it. I was really bored with my straight hair. I was truly inspired by Natural hair sites, pictures and stories I read from women who were so bold, and just big chopped. I loved the versatility I saw, and all of the different textures, so I finally did it, and haven’t looked back since! I have officially been natural with no turning back, going on 5 years now.

How would you describe your texture?
M:
I’m not too good with this hair typing thing. My hair is extremely dense, with fine strands. I guess I would have predominantly 3c/4a texture with the exception of the middle being probably 4b, and the very back being 3c. It can look so different depending on what I do to it, and which products I use.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
M:
I really don’t have a set routine that I follow every month. I pretty much wash when needed, then style according to how I feel at the time. If I am short on time, but really need to wash, I will do a wash and go for the day. For those I use Herbal Essences Hello Hydration or Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer as leave-ins, then that night I will dry twist and rock a twist out for the week. Otherwise, I wash and use a combo of Giovanni Direct Leave In and Silk Elements Liquid Styling Gel, and once it’s 80% dry, seal with my pomade and do mini two strand twists, or throw it in 10-12 twists (more or less, depending on how defined I want it). I wear them for a couple days, and twistout for the rest of the week. Twistouts are obviously my favorite style 🙂

What does wash day look like for you?
M:
I typically wash with a natural soap like raw black soap or the KBB Juicy Shampoo Bar. I detangle with Paul Mitchell’s The Detangler and my paddle or Denman brush, and section my hair off into twists as I go. What happens after that normally depends on how I plan on styling.

Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
M:
I have two fave go-to styles actually when I don’t have too much time. One would of course be my puff, and if I have an older twistout I scrunch in a little castor oil, steam it a little right in the shower, and break out the headband to just push it back.

How do you combat shrinkage?
M:
I used to HATE shrinkage. I have now learned to embrace it. There isn’t anything I really do to combat it anymore. Plus my twistouts sometimes shrink up like crazy depending on the weather anyway 🙂

What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
M:
The very middle of my head is pretty coarse and requires more moisture than the rest of my hair. It can get really frizzy, so I may use a little extra of whatever product I am using at the time.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
M:
Do use some kind of pomade once dry. Do use a good leave-in at all times. I use Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade and Giovanni Direct Leave in.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
M:
Don’t go longer than 2 weeks without detangling (unless braided or twisted). Don’t use heavy product.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
M:
Definitely! You can find me on Instagram @Meme2379. Come join my Insta-fam 🙂

  1. I know this icon feature is old but I’ve seen this sister on YouTube and she has locked her long natural hair. She hasn’t posted any more videos on YouTube of her new loc journey and many people are interested in seeing how it’s working out.

  2. I’ve been natural since 2001 and I’ve never done “the big chop” but my hair hasn’t grown past my shoulders. My hair breaks really fast I’ve recently realized. Do you think I should do the chop and restart from there?

  3. hello megan I does not understand English well but I manage. I life in France on the other hand us them black from here one do not have long a hair which is your method so that it pushes as you me for the moment it arrives to me at the nape of the neck.

  4. is eating healthy a part of it? is it genetics? how did you get your hair to grow to sych length?
i aspire to achieve this. UK, London

  5. Megan, your hair is gorgeous and your length is jaw dropping! Everytime I think I want only want my hair to be an inch longer, I see hair like this that makes me keep growing! My hair is dense/fine which comes with its own challenges. ***Off to follow on Instagram***

  6. Your hair is AMAZING… My hair looks like yours when in a wng but I can never get a twist out to look like yours. I’m starting to think there’s some sort of secret. How do you get your ends to look so good and how do you fluff? Once I fluff my hair it gets all weird looking then I can’t wear it out.. Do you fluff or just let it do its own thing? Thx for responding.

    1. @101Corkscrews… Thanks! I think I know what you mean… I used to have an issue with my ends looking crazy so once I get towards the end of the twist, I just twirl the ends around my finger instead of twisting all the way down…. The same w/ a braid-out. As far as fluffing, I normally have to add some pomade to each twist once they are mostly dry – like if I twist in the AM on a Saturday, I’ll add the pomade to each twist in the evening, which makes it easier to fluff, and I don’t get that stringy look 🙂 Hope that helps!!

  7. beautiful hair 12tribes.net/scrolls learn about who you are according to the scripture an Israelite. Learn about the true Gospel of Christ!

  8. It’s official: I want her hair! Absolutely beautiful. I love all the different styles.

  9. Lovely hair! My hair is dense and fine too. I’ve never been more than 4 years as a loose nappy. Seven of the 12 years I’ve been natural have been loc’ed and I just did a 2nd BC 3 years ago. I aim to get to this length around 5 or 6 years post BC. Thanks for the inspiration, Megan!

  10. Megan is my hair twin!! I have the same thickness and will probably be at that length this time next year. Love love her hair.

  11. And she doesn’t even deep condition….hmmmm…

Time to simplify my own regimen. Lol

j/k Color Treated Hair needs deep conditioning…

    1. LoL! I do deep condition, but I honestly don’t do it enuff for me to have added it into my routine description. I know that is bad, but I’m working on doing it more often…

      1. Even though you don’t do it often, your hair is still beautiful! You have my dream length. Because I’m color treated, I have to do it weekly. Wish I didn’t have to 🙁

        1. My hair isn’t color treated and I still have to DC weekly. Its the way it is for my hair. 🙂

  12. Talk about versatile! She’s right that it changes from product to product, I’d love chameleon hair.

  13. I LOVE this girl’s hair! Can I ask, how long did it take to get to the length that it’s at right now? And did she do protective styles to get it to that length? Because I really want that length and I will be going on 3 years natural this December and I would love to be able to have that length!

    1. Thanx for the comment! Well I’m going on 5 years now… And I actually cut my hair again a few months street my big chop. I would say low manipulation is important. I tried to just let it do it’s own thing for the most part… Not too many protective styles besides mini twists

  14. Love the hair Megan. I know being natural poses challenges, at times, but in the end, it’s so worth it. You can go from curly/kinky to straight, if you choose and anything in between. Nice pics too.
