Mattel recently unveiled and sold out of their Game Developer Barbie. The toy brand has been seeking to push for more careers within the Barbie line. This isn’t Mattel’s first attempt at pushing Barbie into Silicon Valley; the 2014 Computer Engineer Barbie was critically panned because her backstory involved relying on male co-workers to build her computer program. Conversely the new Game Developer Barbie stands on her own intelligence.
Veteran video game designer Marcus Montgomery found the doll at his wife’s request but was disappointed to find it only came in one skin tone. So he customized the doll by purchasing another Barbie with darker skin and repackaging it for his love.
Montgomery is founder of We Are Game Developers, an organization that connects diverse creators within the game development community. Montgomery’s wife is also very much a boss! Lisette Titre, has 15 years of video game development experience and was named one of the Most Powerful Women in Tech by Business Insider.
