KimmayTube

I interviewed Kim of KimmayTube back in October 2009, but I was recently reminded of why I love her YouTube channel. She calls herself the “Common Sense Natural” — a very fitting title — and she’s not afraid to say what’s on her mind.

Much like Jc of The Natural Haven, she focuses on science-based tips for health hair and growth (although, unlike Jc, she is not a scientist.) Her specialty is examining the pH levels of various products and their effects on natural hair. Her leave-in conditioner recipe is widely used. She often gives commentary on issues within the online natural hair world — the product junkyism that never results in growth, the tribalist allegiance to various natural hair sites, the rude anonymous commenting — all of it.

I have to give a disclaimer: KimmayTube is not for everybody! But if you want a refreshingly honest take on being natural, along with some great haircare advice, definitely check her out.

Check out KimmayTube.

  1. |I don’t typically interrupt impressive discussions such as this with inquiries, but I in dire need of help from whoever willing to lend me a hand. I’m thinking about doing business with http://lawncaremaintenance.net/ and I was wondering if somebody here has used them in the past. I am in search of both the bad and good aspects of their business. Please get back to me as fast as possible for this is vital. Thanks a lot.

  2. This design is incredible! You most certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Wonderful job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

  3. um, hi yeah i dont understanding at all how to work kimmaytube, like im trying to find all her videos in order, like from the time she went natural to the time her hair started growing longer like every three months. NEED HELP

    1. Bret, i think u can click the DATE button in the video section. I’ve noticed though that some of the videos are not all there anymore.

  4. I like Kim because she’s done her homework to find out what works for her hair. If nothing else she’s got it done to a science. I’ve watched her channel as well as others and have found her to be very helpful in my journey to healthy hair. We must remember she is human and like most of us we all have bad days.

  5. hello, what an excellent article this is,I found it on bing and I like it very much,I agree with what you have said, it help me a lot in decision, but I still have some questions with the last part, can you explain it for me ?I need your answer, and I will be back again!

      Boa Sorte!

        1. wow forgive my ignorance. but in my spanish class we saw a phrase that was taken from an older spanish dialect from a set of poems we were reading. about a thousand years ago, i believe, and one of the words used was “meu”. so my question is is this portuguese? or one of the spanish dialects, like castellano, or such?

  7. Hello All

I watch Kimmaytube as her videos are well made (concise, easy to watch, volume is high, you can clearly see what she is doing and no mindless unecessary rambling) and I like her hair she keeps me focussed on my hair goals. I watched the Naturals Grow Up video using the link kinldy given in the comments section does anyone have the link to Part 2 please.

Also, does anyone know why the Updated Washing #16 video was taken off Kimmay’s website I emailed her and she never responded, I need to watch that video so if anyone has the link to it I’d be truly grateful.

    1. Hi. As far as I understand, she took it off because this is one of the topics that will be in her dvd.

  8. Wow I really thought I was the only thinking she had an attitude now seeing the nasty comments she made I do not think it was a lady like attitude. I liked her channel but stopped watching it because of the attitude. You have so many other youtubers who have useful tips and who stay classy, well mannered and answer kindly not with an attitude.

  9. I think this is getting way too serious. lets stick to hair ladies. and i must admit this recipe helps. i have a batch in my refrig waiting for me to get done DC my hair

  10. All of you who have something ‘Negative’ to say about Kim Love are Evil and Jealous. If, there’s something Kim says or does that you don’t agree with, be ‘Woman’ enough to discontinue your subscription. It’s as simple as that. And, Quenae Natural you are only trying your best to disfame and belittle Kim….And, while you and others continue to be vendictive and evil your plan will only come to an END! God will continue to allow Kim to succede. God allowed Kim Love to Super-cede all of you and what! so, continue to BASh and be HAteful you are only giving fuel to her success. God will make all of the jealous, envious, hateful woman HER FOOT STOOL!!!!! So, Kim fear not God is with you!

    1. Hey Lady Love,

I really don’t think this is an issue of people being evil. Instead, I do believe the over-arching issue appears to stem from her approach to vlogging coupled with her communication style amongst the Youtube community. There is definitely some jealousy and negativity going on in terms of her hair growth, youtube, and overall success (displayed within many of the comments made on this post); however there is also a lot of consensus amongst viewers in regards to her atttitude being less than pleasant.

That being said, I agree with you completely on the point whereby you stated that if these women do not like Kimmay’s approach then simply unsubscribe. On the other hand, I also do believe that there does come a point where one must draw the line between constructive criticism and blatant negativity/jealousy. Once that line is drawn, it makes it easier to look within oneself to see how this could possibly be changed, because at the end of the day, there cannot be Youtube success without the support of dedicated subscribers.

In sum, the purpose of this response is not to offend you or Kimmay; rather, it is to shed positive light on the other side of the discussion. If this is indeed Kimmay, I congratulate and wish you long-lasting continued success with your channel! You are definitely a huge entrepeneurial inspiration to women of all races around the world and for that you truly do deserve positive recognition! =)

  12. Kimmay is one of the most arrogant, condecending, black females on youtunbe. Having acheived length hair is nothing, her hair doesnt even look healthy, its very thin and in most of her vids you can see the wall behind her. Youtube fame as def gone to her head. Being paid thru youtube is a good hustle, but there are many ways to be “paid”. God has a milion ways to bless us so Im not impressed because she is a youtube partner because i am sure that I make way more money than she does, and i have a better attitude. Humble yourself Ms Kimmay because you will surely fall if you keep putting people down. Hair is not everything, if you are going to be a public figure you have got to learn how to treat everyone with respect. U r not better than others just because your thin hair is long. Get a clue boo. Your hair looks THIN! Long but THIN!!!! Hello!

    1. OMG I thought the same thing about her hair being long and kinda scraggy. If you’re spending 6-8 hours just to detangle ya hair, I would expect a thick, lush head of hair. As I’ve said, her videos are boring and her message inconsistent.

      1. what is the standard of your hair? what raking of beautification would we give your hair? is your hair a refection of your ‘Attitude’?

  13. I looove Kimmaytube!!I think her videos are extremely informative, and her tips very useful. Like many other guru’s or channels of advice, I wouldn’t say its wise to follow everything she says to a tee, because what works for one may not work for another. That being said, Kimmaytube is definitely very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to trying to learn the ins and outs of natural hair!

    HHJ Girlies!!!

  14. I don’t get the whole rah rah about Kimmay. Just look at her videos and her hair growth (length checks). She went years with no growth, then she discovered what works for “her” and me and a few other naturals I know. It doesn’t work for everyone!!!!! I follow more than just her to help with my natural journey. But I’ve discovered what works for “my” hair by using tips and tricks from everyone. She’s just a reference people…not the “TRUTH / GURU / GODDESS” as some of you go so hard to disprove.

I don’t use castile soap or baking soda because it strips my hair and makes it break (my experience), but I experimented with it FIRST before making a decision about it. I co-wash and oil my hair / scalp twice a week, shampoo and deep condition once a month…and my hair is happy.

  15. I followed her for about a year and found some of her earlier videos very useful. Lately? Not so much. She kind of lost me with the “weekend” shows, which, gee, she hasn’t done on in a few months. But, people check her out for hair tips (those are her highest rated videos); not many people care about her movie tips and the other stuff. It just seemed like she was trying to do too much too quickly, without really thinking.
The leave in conditioner didn’t work on my hair either; my hair loves coconut oil and shea butter, so that’s pretty much all I use now.
The luvnaturals site is great, though. Looks very professional – I’d definitely order from there if there was something I liked.
People have commented about her attitude and, yeah, I’ve noticed, especially in her comment section. There’s no reason for her to talk down to people the way she does. And, she doesn’t need to. She’s bright, talented – she could go a long way.
But, I also think we as black women should focus on keeping our hair healthy, and not be so obsessed about growth. Because, for me, I’m noticing the longer Kim’s hair gets, the less I watch, and the more I watch people like naptural85, whose hair is closer to my length.

    1. I agree 100%– kimmay’s page was interesting when she focused on hair care. I think she’s lost sight of what attracted her viewers. She seems to be more focused her hair’s length rather than ongoing hair health and care. I love Africanexports — she’s still keeping it real.

  16. Kimmy’s page and information is stale. Bat this point I recommend ya take the basic information she shared at the beginning of her hair journey. Hey, she’s got good results in terms of hair length. Time to move on where I can continue to learn. Kimmay needs a new gimmick…

  17. I think that Kimmaytube presents information very clearly and this is really what it really should be about. We are all individuals capable of making up our own minds and taking from an experience what we want i agree that she is very confident that some may see as arrogance. Personally i look past this as the information is clear and concise info and it is well produced and easy on the eye.

i commend Kim for doing what she does. for every negative critism there are 1000s that thank her for what she has done and continues to do

We are all human and all have faults. Even Oprah has haters LOL

  18. instead of complaining about how “bad” Kimmay is…how about someone do what she did..come up with evidence that’s broken down from step to step explaining WHY baking soda/apple cider vinegar is “good” to use.(in no way am i saying that in a snooty tone) and use a study that’s different than what “mop top maven has come up with”. Kimmay has a right to post any video she wants on youtube. we should think about what we say before we say it, that goes for everyone even kimmay. a simple “I don’t agree with her videos” is fine, when it all comes down to it…its all about choice no method is horrible that the other one, just use what makes your hair happy. peace to all!!!

  19. This is very enlightening. I just found her a couple of weeks ago, and subscribed. I will personally always appreciate someone who has scientific facts to back up any research, whether it be hair, Darwin, or the string theory. I do find her to be a bit rude when it comes to some of her videos but I can’t hate. But what all these comments are talking about here…? WOW!

@Treacle: No one deserves to be spoken to the way you were. I’m sorry that happened!
@Lori: I wish I had seen that on YouTube! That is INSANE! SHE is insane! Kimmaytube can be as rude as she wants to people to their face, but the fact that she is out as a public figure with all of her success on YouTube, YouTube is the absolute last place she needs to be a complete a-hole on! She will get her karma.

Really, love her or hate her, karma is a bitch. So live and let live.

  20. wow! is all i can say about kimmaytube. I am still a subbie, but i have subbed and unsubbed many times, she does grate on my nerves, and yet i enjoy some of her videos. her scientific info is at best questionable at times (and i know what i am talking about, i am not simply “hating” on her) but i admire her entrepreneurial efforts, she just has a temper which she seems to have difficulties controlling.

  21. @ lORI, OMG i cannot believe what I read, kimmaytube really wrote those comments?!!!!!! I am in disbelief WOW, that is just ridiculous

  22. I agree with marie J henry. Leave kimmy alone she is a sweet lady, and in all honesty she is freakn human, people respond however they want. stop the madness, i love kimmaytube no matter whatever you guys think or say

  23. I just saw it all too. Seems to me she got called out…and i will just pass out if someone says everyone is hating on her! Lol. I think Kimmay was just going through some things…Bless her heart…and lets continue to support each other.

  24. Comments SHE made herself (on Lexi’s breakage video) & later deleted:

    @cherubina

And while you’re at it, get a proper education. Cause it takes a real bonafide, brainless idiot to say what you’ve said. Brainwashing people to buying products that aren’t mine? How stupid are you, really?

That makes a hell of a lot of sense. Promoting products that aren’t mine & fro
m which I gain nothing financially. Did you finish 1st grade?

You better back the hell off & sit your ass down before I serve it to you on a platter.

    @cherubina
Perfect example of the low life, faceless cowards I was referring to. Sincerity? Where are YOUR videos? In fact, who are YOU? Show your face. I have an entire 3 part hair journey video WITH PHOTOS showing 12 yrs of struggling with my hair. Breakage, dyes, texturizers. & countless videos teaching others how I’ve learned to manage my hair, not to mention a financial series warning against
credt use. You don’t know me, you don’t even know who the hell you are. Get a hobby troll.

    @cherubina

You dumb heifer, how is that for sincerity? Don’t let the cutesy smile fool you.
Bother me again while I’m trying to get work done and I’ll put you on blast and unleash the beast on your imaginary ass

  25. This is becoming very ridiculous to talk over & over about someone’s personality..If you don’t like it…leave it alone. It’s funny how we are quick to judge somebody over their actions or imperfections but yet we, do worst. To still talk about that incident is to prove that some of us cannot move to the next level.

I’m pretty sure that Kimmay, AE & Taren made peace and learned from that experience.

    Peace to all of you.

  26. Well it seems like Kimmaytube has officially lost her mind. See the latest on her disgusting attitude on YouTube by going to Taren916 or AfricanExport’s page. One of the videos is called “Unnessesary Drama….Really??” Someone finally made a video on Kimmaytube’s nasty attitude. And this was brought on by Kim Love herself, because she posted some real rude comments the other day – then deleted them. It’s just a mess. See for yourself…

  27. @ Treacle, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW was it that serious? it seems like she put more negative energy into blocking & deleting people with “negative energy” oh well you cant win them all. I am subscribed to her channel so i hope she doesn’t read this and block & delete me too lol but that behavior is pretty ridiculous!

  28. Thanks Dani!!

Update: I subscribed to the luvnaturals channel yesterday because I wanted to continue supporting her business, I knew I would not be able to comment anymore, and I wanted to sort of check out her videos without “bringing the negative energy” or what else I was accused of doing, and it was a fresh new start – now knowing her rules.

But today I checked and she made it an effort to unsubscribe me and block me from that channel too.

I guess nothing can shock me anymore.

I thought most Youtubers love subscribers but I guess not this one.

    Just my experience though.

    1. Is there someonelses channel you can subscribe to? it seems to me you are ‘obsessed’ with this womans channel, and desire a friendship with her, she doesn’t know any of you personally,so why does it matter. My question is this; “are you trying your best to pose as a friend and seem to destroy her buisness she has going?” Why do you steady seek the permission or apprval of kim? if some isn’t cool with you, then keep it quitely moving. We learned this in the fifth grade.

      1. If anyone is “obsessed” it’s you. I’ve been going through these comments and your negativity is ridiculous. You complain about inappropriate grammar use and yet you commit the same offenses. For example, “Why do you steady seek the permission or apprval of kim?” it’s ‘approval’ and the ‘K’ in Kim is supposed to be capitalized. Also after the end of a sentence, please use the space bar. It makes the visual flow difficult. You discuss the education we should have received in elementary school and yet you failed to pay attention to the basics. Why are you so strongly against criticism of Kim? Most of the comments are not harsh, cruel, or even uncalled for. It’s called constructive criticism it’s necessary for growth. If you or Kim can’t handle the criticism, then you are both in the wrong arena.

  29. I was absolutely devoted to her, a little mindless I will say, because I believed in everything she said. Her tone was annoying, but I did not find it condescending because it takes more than a tone for someone to make me feel smaller than them etc.

What I am shocked to have found out is that she blocked me, deleted my comments and removed me from her subscribers.

I know you’re all gonna laugh, but this has shaken me quite a bit, I’m feeling a little scarred by that, I shouldn’t be ‘cos she’s a stranger right?

But I looked up to her SO much. I watched her videos practically every time they’re uploaded as I was subscribed. I just don’t know what made me lash out on me like that.

    Did I bring ‘negative energy’.

I was watching one of her older photos, and now I regret being such an inhibited poster for that particular reason because I asked her if she would wear her hair in an afro puff, as in the 1970s styles, this was because I wasn’t sure about her hair texture and how it would pull of the style, I have never seen her pull that look off, but it wasn’t meant to offend. I had just finished watching DeStorm’s videos, where he asks his subscribers to challenge him, to request a special video, so I was pumped, I thought maybe she’d do a video and show us her lovely hair – but instead she responded stating that:

“You should really take the time to look through ALL of my other videos first before making assumptions about what my hair can and can’t do. And I’m not trying to be mean either. But this topic has already been covered a few times. My hair has been shown in a fro (or frizzy state puff) state in several of my videos. Especially 2009. Heck, even Weekend show #3.

An Afro or puff (which are both fun styles) is one’s hair (usually) in a frizzy, tangled, unprotected state.”

At which I sent her a response, clarifying my question, and then I thought you know what, don’t try and fight this, just apologise if you hurt her feelings, so I sent her a PM, stating that I didn’t mean to offend. What do I know, the next day or same day, gbam!! She’s removed me.

Looking up to her, I wanted to be as successful as she was, and to have something to share with YouTubers, but now she’s shown me that it really does matter what personality you have, you can’t just make amazing things, eventually she will only have new subscribers, with deleting ‘negative energy’ people, she’ll lose her loyal subscribers, the ones who cared enough to challenge her, who cared enough to watch the video and react.

I don’t know right now, because she does seem like a sweetheart, so I guess that’s why I was a little upset, she claims to ‘read all of her messages’ so she’s read mine and still didn’t get over the issue, imagine if I was like a 14 year old girl, I could be heartbroken!!

      1. Kim Love please get off this site. You need help. Please feel free to contact a mental health professional. I believe you are Narcissistic Personality Disordered.

  30. I had horrible results with the leave in, lots of breakage. I think it was too acidic for my hair also and I don’t think my hair likes aloe vera products at all – even more breakage/brittleness. As soon as I stopped using the leave in the breakage reduced drastically. I just didn’t notice anything special about the leave in either tbh that I can’t get using jojoba/castor oil mixed with other products. I think all this stff regarding pH is overated also becase for instance oils do not have a pH and they work well with many individuals hair without issue. I say just keep it simple and use whatever works with your hair.

  31. I am a kimmaytube subscriber also and find most of her videos entertaining and her subscribers very loyal. Everyone’s been raving about the leave in conditioner and I seem to be the only person with unfavorable results.I tried it once weekly for about 3 weeks and have not had the great results everyone talks about. It made my hair soft but dry, dusty looking, stiff and little body. My twistouts just didn’t have the fullness and body that I’ve always experienced. I did not use the Kinky Curly Conditioner, but i don’t think that’s the issue with my hair, I think it’s too acidic for my hair and I need something with a higher ph level. I have stopped using it and will return to my trusted products. Nothing against Kimmytube, her conditioner (or the ph level) just doesn’t work for my hair.
Anyone else had a bad result?

  32. 1st I woul dlike to say that I am a kimmaytube subscriber & i do watch SOME OF HER VIDS & FIND THEM HELPFUL ,SOMETIMES INFORMING.
I just wanted to clear the airr with that lol.

I remember when Kimmay started out over 1 year ago.. barely alt of viewers on her channel but now she’s skyrocketed. I honestly do give her credit for trying to make a difference in the hair community. It takes a lot of dedication, patience & time to put these vids out correctly for viewers to understand. However, I do find the science part of the hair to be confusing. The PH balance for hair.. its good to understand it, but i don’t find it necessary. Hair is hair.. it grows, sheds, breaks, splits, shines in color lol & ETC. I can agree that many of her viewers have taken it too far with the science aspect & the praising.
I do agree that it’s important not to believe one person on youtube when it comes to taking care of natural hair. You as the consumer.. individual… need to research this info yourself. You are the only one who knows your hair the best.

  33. I agree with coockie!

Youtubers like Cynthiarf, Rusticbeauty and Beautifulbrwnbabydol are so much more personable and they can relate to the average person who is experimenting and trying to dive in to this natural ish!

  34. I have seen a bit of her videos I did find her to be a bit rude when she read out a letter or something that someone sent her … 1st its embarrassing to do that to someone… I know she didn’t say the persons name but it is kind of indirectly bullying the person with thousands of people watching …

at the end of the day people should not be doing or religiously following other people’s regimen although I watch youtube for inspiration I PICK and CHOOSE very few tips because no one knows my hair better than I do and most of the product I use are customised to my hair needs for both it heath and growth …

1st hand research is better than 2nd hand so go and find out for yourself there are loads of info on the internet …

  35. Initially I found Kim’s style to be informative and interesting. Understanding that she is NOT a scientist or trained “hair doctor” (I can’t think of the formal term at the moment) I pick and choose what to believe. I too was shocked and turned off by the video in which she rants and raves about being “disrespected” by certain viewers. Kim is an ego maniac…and her fashion shows are homely.

  36. I do not like Kimmaytube, she thinks she knows it all. She acts very immaturely and is wayyy to competitive against ppl who disagree with her theories. She uses 1 bottle of conditioner a week and she’s proud of that. IM sorry I cant. I appreciate youtubers like:

Cynthiarf, Rusticbeauty and Beautifulbrwnbabydol. In the beginning i thought that Beaut.brwnbabdol. had an attitude, but I found out that she is a very well spoken, kind and humble person with a right dosis of confidence! ( unlike kimmaytube.)

Kimmaytubes subscribers scare me alot, as they do not give genuine feedback but always praise her. Her stans are alarming as many will go to channels that Kimmaytube favors with the message: Kimmaytube sent me! I mean come on. The thing that Kimmaytube does is steal techniques, and styling tips from other youtubers, change a few ideas and call it her own! Ive seen it many times.

    1. You have serious issue with woman beacuse you have and emotional issue with yourself! reading your comment gives me liberty to exlpore your mind. Your mind and spirit is filled with envy and jealousy…Haven’t your mother said you shouldn’t be jealous of your own biological sister.huh! I’m hitting straight in the heart. Your envious behavior of your own biological sister is and example of jealousy you have with other woman….

  37. Wow… what in the world. Who knew the topic of Kimmay would elicit such a strong response?!

  38. Yeah so kimmay tube totally took the letter that I sent her privately and blasted me on youtube essentially for saying that “I decided that, after watching her vidoes, she really knows what she’s talking about and I would use her methods”. She used my letter as a preface to one of the nastiest videos i’ve seen a natural hair channel pose to their public (Hardheaded…). After reading my letter she says “this is what we’re up against”. What are you up against? People making sure that you know what you’re talking about before they take your advice for their hair? I’m so pissed right now, i’m more pissed that I found out about the video on this blog. She didn’t even have the decency to give me a heads up, “hey, i’m gonna read the letter you sent me privately to the world”. Jerk, i’m unsubbed. Too bad, I actually like her channel but I can’t in good conscience freely support such a rude person.

  39. i suspect a majority of you guys work for the baking soda company..lol
kimmaytube is just trying to help and every1 has a different personality ..you cant tell me every1 u know likes ur attitude…
y dont u make ur own forum/videos and we’ll see how good it is..
    shessssh!!!!

  40. @kadiane*francophone:

The point I mentioned (to which you later responded) pertained to cowashing. If Massey did, in fact, rectify the problems with her products, then good for her. The only reason I even mentioned Massey is because she brought the concept of cowashing to the masses. That’s all I know about her. I’m not going to stand here and attack other people like some kind of loon, especially when it comes to a product line that I’ve never even used. That’s the font of lunacy.

I’m telling the truth, if anybody writes a negative statement about Kim, you’re on them like a pit bull on a chicken leg.

Just like the other sisters have told you, it’s not that serious! Damn!

  41. @ LadySwag

No i did’nt but i read on the same blog i gave you that she has promised to remove thoses things from the products. What caught my attention is that when she responded to the jillipoo, she said she agreed she had to update her book. She was responding to jillipoo’s criticism about the new science discoveries since her first book:

”If, since your book came out in 2002, advances in cosmetic science have resulted in silicones that don’t smother hair or require sulfates to remove them, we’d love it if you’d tell us”.

” The book says leave-ins are a waste of time (page 49). Yet B’Leave In is among the products in your DevaCurl line. Can you explain this discrepancy? ”

You can read her response here. If she says she is going to update CG, she is obviously not talking about the Deva line. Plus, if she is still the leave-ins tha were suppose to be a waste of time… http://jillipoo.blogspot.com/2009/04/lorraine-massey-wrote-to-me.html

  42. This was one of her annotations from her “Naturals Grow Up” video:

“If the traditional resources on natural hair are so great, how come all of us aren’t experts by now? It took me 13 years to get it right because info was inconsistent and disorganized not to mention based on *opinions* not facts on how things actually work! Like Shampoo vs. Conditioner molecules etc.”

Not only did she get the pro-baking soda sisters in an uproar, she got the cowashers pissed off too. I wonder what Lorraine “Curly Girl” Massey would think of all this. Truth be told, I like Kimmay’s tips and techniques, I just don’t like Kimmay and when it comes to her hair “science” videos I pretty much have to pick the meat from the bone.

  43. I don’t appreciate, her videos, if you ask me, she added to the confusion of African hair care practice. The very thing she was trying to take away, I decided to look at the natural haven and I’m thoroughly convince after a few days of researching myself (and woman enough to admit) Kimmay was wrong. Point blank. Thank you for educating me, that’s all I want to say. Carry on.

    1. Attention!
Ann, your grammar is distrubing.Don’t wait on others to educate you; educating yourself is a human requirement.

    2. Attention, Anna!
Your witing adds to the confusion to the English language. In other words, your grammar is appalling and definately needs major improvement. For instance, cotinuious reading of literature and proof reading your own witings will make you an ‘A’ student in Englis 101. Your improper usage of ‘commas'( comma splicing) offends the community of linguistics. Now, Anna, if there’s any doubt of the meaning of a word which makes you uncomfortable, insecure and unsure; by all means take full advantage to consult a dictionary or a thesaurus. Please, keep these vital learning tools at your bedside, if needed and you need it (smile). Don’t allow your insecurities to threaten your ability to write clearly and effectively. In my opinion, you are not prepared to approach this forum at this time, with your lack of wrting skills. That’s all I want to add. Please don’t continue to carry on like this by using improper useage of the English language. Remember a proper education is a human right!

  44. For the most part, I like Kimmay. I think that she presents her material in a digestible manner. My only complaint is the voice. I wish she would just speak at a normal speed a cut out the voice over thing. I know that she probably does it so that everyone can understand her, but her voice (at that speed) grates on my nerves.

  45. @ Anon

What did you get wrong ? Well this: It does not say that is breaks hair.

About the baking soda, Peach said it was a ”gentle cleanser” cuz JC said so. Not true.

  46. I don’t really follow either JC or Kimmay, but science is debatable. Pluto used to be a planet when I was a kid.

and science is not universally true. There are people who smoke for dozens of years and never get lung cancer.

  47. @kadiane*francophone

I know all about those shampoo posts, I’m the one that told her to please do a study on it! I know what she said on it. I said that it breaks hair, so what did I get wrong? Two, she said SHE found it wise, but not necessary to stop using baking soda.

Okay, you SO don’t know how to debate.

  48. From the very first videos, she’s had a holier than thou attitude that comes across. But I first decided that she was actually quite mean and unlikeable when she did that nasty video about some of her youtube fans posting her videos at other sites. All she had to do was give a heads up and kindly tell folks that her videos were her property and not to post them elsewhere. No, she didn’t do that. She went on a good 5 minute tirade talking down to and belittling her audience. When I saw that I shocked. Because the online natural community, particularly the women who take the time to do videos, tend to be very friendly and personable. Kimmaytube acts like she’s doing us poor fools a favor and therefore can talk to us any kind of way.

She’s crazy and has some serious insecurity issues. Like I said before, if you have to put people down, especially people you haven’t even met, just to feel superior, then you have some serious issues.

  49. kadiane*francophone is really upset! LOL typing these looong drawn out paragraphs to repeat the same bit. Relax, they’re just opinions. Sheesh!!

@Kels – I agree! I watch ALOT of natural divas on YouTube & she’s by far the least likable. Her attitude is funky; period.

  50. @ Anon
    @ Peach

Since you seem to be a sudden big fan of JC…witch i’m a fan of:
This is a link to JC’s April 2010 opinion on Baking soda:
    http://thenaturalhaven.blogspot.com/2010/04/reader-questions-modifying-shampoo-and.html

    Glentle cleanser ? bouahahaha!!!

And then in June, problably after people were pressing her with question regarding Kimmay, she answered a specific question witch was : does baking soda relax hair ? (not: is it gentle ?)

    http://thenaturalhaven.blogspot.com/2010/06/can-baking-soda-or-castile-soap-relax.html

Sulfate free shampoo? Well you can read this too:
    http://thenaturalhaven.blogspot.com/2010/06/myth-or-fact-sulfate-shampoo-causes.html

  51. Anyone else notice how she says castile soap is dangerous in the annotations of Naturals Grow Up? Ironic, JC covered that on the natural haven and proved that wrong too. It’s safer than the sulfate shampoos that Kimmay is advocating, which breaks hair. #teamrealscientist. I’m switching to sulfate free shampoo.

  52. @iman

It’s a gentle cleanser. Nothing more. It’s doesn’t damage the cuticle or disturb the cuticle. It doesn’t relax you hair, but it doesn’t moisturize it either. It just can be used to clean. She listed a source that was shady and she is still spewing her rhetoric. I’m still subscribed but I just don’t like her science videos. They are scientifically wrong. I feel sorry for the newbie that takes her misleading ‘facts’ as truth. You can read more about it on the science blog THE NATURAL HAVEN. She covered baking soda, she proved Kimmaytube wrong.

I decided to look at the “naturals grow up” video, wow. Seriously, it would behoove her to know that not everyone who disagrees with her is disagreeing because she blocked them, or they don’t like her personality. Some genuinely know she got something wrong. How’d I miss that video?

  53. Monica,

I think, minus the high production values of her videos and the excellent organization of her research, everything else about her persona is high school. That Naturals Grow Up videos was the nastiest and ugliest thing I’ve ever seen in the natural online community.

Kimmaytube is a passive aggressive. I don’t appreciate all the little pop ups on her videos that are mean, snide, and snarky towards her own viewers and the online natural community in general. I don’t like her ugly tone. I even read an interview with her on another blog some time ago and she came across as her usual rude and ugly self in print as well!

Anybody who has to put down others to make themselves seem bigger has issues.

I know a lot of people who have unsubscribed to her based on her nasty attitude alone. I don’t care how good the info is and how nice the video looks if the person is talking to you seems to be below them and a waste of their time. And yet she wants our money to support her new business. Please.

  54. Can someone please explain to me the merits of washing your hair w/ baking soda. Not whether is safe or not, but the actual merits.Folks seem really passionate about this issues and since this is apparently where she’s “got it wrong”, can you please tell us why? Every shampoo on the market is PH balanced. Her conclusions are very much in the mainstream. People are acting as if she did a video claiming to get scalp massages from aliens that make her hair grow!

With all the ridiculous claims that are made by the black haircare industry, salons, stylist, bloggers, vloggers, on hairboards etc., it amazes me that this woman is the subject of so much debate. It’s really sad to see the amount of negativity in these comments. People are complaining about her attitude, but sound 10x more angry, arrogant, insulting, bitter, and defensive.

So in the spirit of learning, I ask, why use baking soda…
Is it a gentle cleanser? Is it all natural? Does it leave the hair more moisturized? Please explain, because to my knowledge all of the answers to those questions are no. I read regimes and advice from many who use it, but I never could unterstand why. It just doesn’t seem like something I’d want to put in my hair. Maybe I’m missing something, but what makes it so great?

  55. @kala77

I love how you say we should basically lower our standards for no reason. I love how everyone gives her a pass, y’all will defend her wrongness no matter what. Sad.

  56. Is it that deep?

Just like you take everything your stylist tells you with a grain of salt, you should do the same with vloggers. Our hair has so many variations, it’s impossible to issue one size fits all recommendations.

Kimmay produces some very high quality videos and I appreciate the time and effort she puts into the final product. Her videos are by far the most professional ones I’ve seen on YouTube. She presents some good ideas and it is obvious she knows what works for her hair.

However, I didn’t care for that Naturals Grow Up video. I was put off by the content and the tone of the clip. Who is she to scold someone? She couldn’t defend her stance on baking soda (she admitted she didn’t have a science background) so she told the people who questioned her to grow up. It was very high school and quite surprising for a woman who I thought was very self-posessed.

  57. @kadiane*francophone

Yup, lots of germs, plenty of filth, totally nasty, and absolutely dirty: that is how it is when folks do not wash their hair. I’ve had the misfortune to encounter plenty of unwashed heads in close contact.

Not sure why that gives you the mental bends.

Washing is good. Don’t fight the cleansing waters. It is our friend.

Kimmay’s got over 20k subscribers: my comment doesn’t mean a thing. Why it bothers you is a mystery. This topic is not about you.

Stop trolling. Give it a rest already.

  58. @ kala77

”Nothing more. It’s misleading to say baking soda isn’t good for hair, bring up a funky source to back it up, then censor people who disagree.”

At least she had a so called funky source. What was the disagreement of people based on ? No source at all. They will just say: I disagree because it works for me at best or a bunch of mean things at worst. I’ll rather have a so called funky source then not have a source at all. for me P. Begoun is not a funky source.

And don’t tell me all those people read JC’s blog. Oh! no. They disagreed way before JC made her researched on the PH subject. Just go and look at the day JC posted her views. And Kimmay was accurate on many things. Many, even if she did not have it all right. Now i know i will never put citrus on my hair cuz the PH is too low. I’m sure when people were advising to do so, none of you challenged it or were offended by the lack of source or asked for a disclaimer. how can you ask for a disclaimer when the person is always telling us witch books she read to get her infos? What else do you need ?

Those people not only disagreed without any source and would most likely disagree with what JC says on her blog because of their thought process. If they know that mineral and silicone are not the devil …OMG we need bodyguard for JC lol.

A lot of people were using baking soda BECAUSE they thought it was a natural product. They wanted to avoid chemicals. Kimmay is the one that broke that myth. Come on.

  59. @ Betty Chambers

I don’t care about who you subscribe to. I care about something else.

There is s difference between you telling me today: ” My hair is dirty” and me going on a public place saying your hair is dirty and that is i why unsubscribed from your channel. By doing that, i’m taking things out of context and misleading people by making them thing you are a dirty girl.
You only gave precisions (Oh! she said her hair is dirty, not me) after you were called out on it. I went on your blog and did not see your face. Because of that, no matter what people will say about you on the net nobody will associate you with dirt in real life. That is is not the case for Kimmay.

If you notice i don’t call out all criticism made about her becuz i don’t mind them. I just pick a few that are worth debating or plain over the top mean. I know i’ll appreciate someone defending me against this kind of unnecessary meanness.By the way she has been washing her hair weekly way before she started Youtubing. My white friends will complain about their dirty hair if they don’t wash their hair for 2 days. I’ll never go and tell people they are totally nasty, dirty and filthy. That is just uncalled for.

  60. I’ve unsubscribed. She needs an attitude adjustment, for real. A lot of her info is on point and the proof is in the pudding because she is maintaining length and her hair is very long, but I can’t watch her videos anymore. I’m trying to learn about hair, I really don’t care how many Fortune 500 companies that she’s worked for or how many consulting jobs she’s had. And I certainly don’t want to be talked down to like I’m mentally challenged.

I like her hair and her info, but she’s got to be one of the most unlikeable natural hair youtubers, without question.

  61. kala77,

“I don’t remember her saying she was a scientist.”

We are aware of that, but a disclaimer would be nice. Even scientists put up disclaimers. If she doesn’t put on up, she’s differently up for criticism. But no one is forcing her. They are suggestions.

“It seems like the backlash came because she went against the grain.”
The backlash is because she tried to say something AS FACT (note that), and she got it wrong. Nothing more. It’s misleading to say baking soda isn’t good for hair, bring up a funky source to back it up, then censor people who disagree.

“I personally feel some people need to get off their high horse as if every bit of advice we have taken from a friend was backed up by science.”

So you’re saying that it cancels out? I hope not, that would a logical fallacy.

  62. @kadiane*francophone

I disagree with you assessment on water. But anyway, funny how you only addressed that and not my other arguments. Differences of opinion doesn’t mean your “hating.” Sorry.

  63. @kadiane*francophone

Yeah, I think nasty or dirty were her words, not mine. I thought if she’s gonna be filthy, there’s not much I want to hear from her.

It was my option to unsubscribe. I can still do so now.

There’s really nothing to get hysterical about. Not sure what you are getting worked up about. I admire her: she admits it’s a learning process. Her hair is growing, so obviously she’s found a method that works for her.

Relax. Not all criticism is a sign of hatred. People just have differences of opinion.

  64. @ Elaini

What have YOU brought to the natural hair community so far ?????

Where does it say that you have to be a scientist to talk about natural hair and PH. All you need to do is to make your researches in a smart way. Unless you are a scientist you can not fully understand many of what JC reads before she informs us. Regular people rely on people like JC, P.Begoun, ”The beauty brain” etc for their informations () Regular people like you, I and Kimmay because we trust this people. How do you know everything JC is saying is right ? Isn’t it because you trust her ? Have you ever verified her sources ? No !!! So that is what Kimmay did too. She trusted someone she was suppose to be able to trust.

Water is natural hair best friend ? lol. I remember When naturals used to spritz their hair every day specially the 4C types to have healthy hair, even if it meant shrinkage then knots then breakage due to the knots. Water is natural hair best friend ? In JC’s blog she used to say something like that at the very begining. I was suspicious because we do not know how long the water stays in the hair and Begoun never said that, not that Begoun is always right lol. JC’s then found out water stays in a sealed SKIN for 24 hours. If it is the same for hair that means sealed hair only holds that much water for 1 days after the wash during the whole week lol. Then she made more researches and found the ”hydral fatigue” thing. Then from post to post, it was even more clear Hum! water can be damaging too and the water in the hair always tend to balance with the water in the air: when the air is humid your hair will have more water in it and when the air is dry your hair will loose water to have the same level of water then in the air. YOUR HAIR CAN NATURALLY GRAB WATER BY ITSELF AND DON’T NEED YOUR HELP, unless you seal it, witch will slow down the natural process of water lost or intake…but for how long ? 1 day like for the skin? 3 days like Kimmay says?

No researches said ADDING WATER to hair was good or bad for hair’s health. So what is added water good for ? It seems more of a styling and/or manageability thing and if it has advantages it also has drawbacks. The pliability added water gives can mean less breakage when manipulating the hair while wet or sealed, depending of the curl size. My 4C hair do not like water much. Unless i immediately keep it from shrinking ( braids or bun)to avoid knots tangles and hardness witch breaks my hair. My 10” long hair can only be slighlty finger detangled when dry and stretched. Water is my friend for styling purposes only like heat does. Other then that…

  65. What? Where in the world did all this backlash for Kimmay come from? I have to laugh at some people on here who do not agree with her. “Cult-like” following?? Really people? I have been a subscriber of hers for a few months and really enjoy the time she takes to make her videos. She puts a lot of work into them, which is great. But just because she is sharing information that some may not agree is not a big deal. Just move on. It seems like the backlash came because she went against the grain. She started to challenge some things people in the natural hair community were already accustomed to. She got people thinking outside of the box.

Also, I don’t remember her saying she was a scientist. What I like is that she encourages us regular folks who don’t have the science background to investigate and become more inquisitive about the products we are using in our hair. I personally feel some people need to get off their high horse as if every bit of advice we have taken from a friend was backed up by science.

We have to remember that the natural hair community is still growing. And because there is no one in the main stream to help us learn more about our hair, we have to rely on each other. Differing opinions is great. But this “debate” is really getting us no where.

  66. why do people keep saying “well so-and-so got this or that wrong, they need to fix it!”…

Not all hair is the same. some advice could be wrong for a lot of people and right for just as many. If it doesn’t work for YOU, then it’s not right for YOU. chill out and move on.

and if you think you can do better with the hair advice, then by all means start a blog or video channel and stop complaining sheesh.

  67. @kadiane*francophone

Wow, you really need to calm down. How did Jc get the water and hair one wrong? Water is our hair’s best friends and it used to moisturize. She even stated that while this is true that hair also weaken at this point, this is where conditioner comes in.

FYI. let’s say I am “hating,” does that mean my argument isn’t true? No, and what do you mean it P.BEGOUN fault? It’s called researching your researcher. You’re grown enough and have enough common sense to buy high powered cameras and what not, but when it comes to CHECKING the citation, nothing? No, I give her responsibility because many didn’t even know who this scientist was, she should have done more research.

Three, at least JC backs up her findings with peer reviewed journals. If she is wrong, she admits it; she doesn’t censor people. That’s like comparing an apple to a rock. Try again.

  68. @ Betty Chambers

TOTALLY NASTY AND DIRTY? Hahaha! When i though i had heard it all.

So…that is the reason you insubcribed….you did not actually see the dirt…cuz you can’t see it…you just heard the last time she washed ( wich is normally every week). Most naturals i know do not even wash every week. Usually every 2 week and even once a month. Lots of people do SOME video tutorial on non freshly washed hair…hum….never heard that one before LMAO. TOTALLY? and …NASTY ? Dang

  69. Sure we all know her biggest controversy was claiming baking soda was bad for hair, however it is up to you as a youtube viewer to sort the wheat from the chaff of the vast amounts of information people choose to divulge on their vlogs sometimes because they genuinely believe that info, they’ve done their research or maybe just to please a perceived viewership. I give the benefit of the doubt to youtube users that they will take everything said on there with a pinch of salt because this is the internet and ‘facts’ are very often not so. If someone cannot investigate the truth behind self appointed scientists assertions then I wonder how they are allowed on a computer unsupervised.

Yes I’ve seen those who take youtubers words as gospel but these are the same people who would go to a stylist or a doctor and believe verbatim everything that was told to them without doing any follow up research for themselves.

It’s also disingenuous of those who are literally married to hair board/blog info and tips especially those vlog/blog/hair forum users with long hair, to criticise so savagely a youtuber who at least tries to research haircare while using 50-11 things from hair forums that are untested and even not designed for use in hair care, pass that information to others without any scientific testing done on that product or practice. Many of these women have claimed to experience positive effects from these experiments on their hair and are happy to share the wealth, so to speak. Should they be reprimanded because they haven’t done any research into what that MN or megatek will do to the human body?

Hair care has always been trial and error in the black community, old wives tales, what grandma used to do. Kimmay seems to want to go beyond that whether she gets it right first time or makes a few misjudgements. No one says don’t criticise her, I certainly don’t as I acknowledged in my post, more subs, more scrutiny. Some of us are just heartened by someone who makes good informative videos on youtube for black hair care. God forbid we go back to the days where you had to trust your local ‘trained’ stylist who looked at a head full of 4b like it was the devil.

  70. @ Elaini

”And no offense, and if one knows they aren’t scientist why are you teaching? ” ?????

Really !! I have read and seen SOOOO many people teach things, they did not know anything about, and people still liked them. Even Leila (BGLH) states things that are not accurate something, and we still like her. Kimmay is a person who is trying hard even though, like everybody else , she can make mistakes and it is like FULL HATE. I’m not a scientist either but i read a lot of Paula Begouns book: the ”cosmetic coop” witch kimmay read as well. That woman is known for her serious teachings on cosmetic matters. She explains a lot AND cite sources from time to time. JC has helped me see that P. Begoun is not always accurate even if she is most of the time. Even JC has made some mistakes in the past about the need to often wet our hair, water being our best friend etc..Kimmay is not a scientist and it is smart of her (unlike a lot of people) to have read this books and try to understand things. You do not need to be a scientist to understand this books. There is no excuse for not trying to be more knowledgable, and stating falses hair facts ALL THE TIME on blogs and youtube and forums and then hating on someone that is trying to help improve the knowledges in a SMART and EDUCATED WAY . What she said about PH IS in P. BEGOUN 2004 BOOK. If it is a mistake, then it is P. BEGOUN’S mistake cuz she is the kind of person you trust so much you don’t think they can make mistakes. P.BEGOUN reputation is based on her scientific accuracy WORLD WIDE. For me overall, Kymmay is likely to be more accurate than not because she tries to be. What do you have against that ? Even the ”Beauty brain” likes Paula Begouns books. I even think they started blogging because they were inspired by her. I’ll not be surprised that JC started blogging cuz she was inspired by the ”beauty brain” AND the LOVE OF IGNORANCE in the natural hair community.

Now everybody here seems to be in love with JC but i’m pretty sure she gets the same amount of IGNORANT comment about how she does not know anything and blablabla…..lol. Mineral oil and SLF and silicone anyone ? hahaha.

  71. Kimmay’s an interesting work in progress. I find her amusing, and I like her presentation and documentary style vids. She wants to be the face and expert of natural hair. I think with Afro-textured hair that’s impossible. If it was feasible someone would have achieved it already.

Individually, our hairs respond differently to every tactic and product. She’s found a solution that works for her. She should be prepared to state – each and every time – that her ideas wont work for everyone else. I think therein lies the rub.

I was subscribed to her in the early days, until she styled hair which was totally nasty and dirty. I unsubscribed. This was before she discovered washing hair is a good practice.

I take her as seriously as I take anyone who dispenses hair advice: with a truckload of salt. If the hairstyle interests me I would try it, but I since know exactly what works for me, I leave the rest.

  72. @Mel – I think you hit the nail on the head. Her defensiveness IS over the top. She also censors her comments, which in my mind, lends one to conclude that she is not as confident as she “tries” to appear!

  73. (gasp!) Thank goodness, I’m not the only one that disagrees with her. I’ll keep her hairstyles just not the science bit. And no offense, and if one knows they aren’t scientist why are you teaching? Not only that, but I don’t see a disclaimer saying that she isn’t a scientist. That’s a bit off. Even JC at the Natural Haven puts up a disclaimer. It’s common sense. Lastly, yeah she does condescend people with her tone and got some information wrong. She need to correct it or in my book.

And “Baking soda gate,” you actually named the whole dang thing?

  74. I’ll go ahead and jump on this bandwagon. A few things to note:

    1. Let’s not be afraid of healthy debate! It’s ok to subscribe and not agree with everything Kimmay says and even express that disagreement. I’m definitely in that camp.

    2. I appreciate the “beauty” of her videos; clean and entertaining.

    3. You can’t argue with the fact that her hair growth has been phenomenal! She has mastered her own hair, imo, and I think I can definitely learn from her approach.

    4. I find her, at times, defensive and condescending. Yup, she’s obviously confident and I applaud her success, but her defensiveness towards opposing opinions is kinda over the top. Giving her the benefit of doubt, I could only guess that this comes from reading thousands of off-the-wall comments with a large base of followers.

    5. I keep in mind that she’s not a scientist and her conclusions based on limited facts are at times “leaps”. That’s why I check out JC at the Natural Haven, who includes journal references.

    6. Keep the meat, spit out the bones is my approach, but overall I applaud her efforts and progress.

  75. People give all types of unsupported advice on youtube and frame it as the “truth”. I appreciate that she backs her claims up with research, science, and her own results. She displays it visually so that people can understand and make their own assumptions. I also like that I can actually SEE her hair.

I think the baking soda war is downright ridiculous. She has her own parameters for what’s good for the hair. Her definition of good is built upon PH Balance. Baking soda is not the ideal PH for hair, therefore she does not believe it is good for the hair. Her belief in PH balance is not unique, the ENTIRE commercial haircare industry sells products that are PH balanced. If PH balance isn’t important to you, then just move on. Why are people so personally offended by one woman’s feelings on baking soda?

Also, I don’t think her tone is condescending, it’s called confidence. It’s clear that this woman is comfortable in her skin, she’s focused, mature, and not interested in dealing with foolishness. Not only do I find her videos informative, I appreciate the time she gives to share other things about her life (finance, marriage, business, behind the scenes of youtube, etc.) I appreciate the quality of her videos and I’ve ordered accessories from her luvnaturals site and was highly impressed with the quality, presentation, and overall customer service. I hope this sister continues to do well, she’s ambitious and there’s nothing wrong with that!

  76. We don’t “ALL have to support her.” BGLH says as much in her last sentence: “I have to give a disclaimer: KimmayTube is not for everybody! But if you want a refreshingly honest take on being natural, along with some great haircare advice, definitely check her out.” No one is saying all of us have to agree on something.

I like her videos and I do what I do with anything else I read/hear from any source: I separate the wheat from the tares whenever I can. I try to keep a discerning mind regarding the information I hear, and disregard (up to a point) whatever information or tone I disapprove of.

  77. Kay

No, most people didn’t think baking soda was wrong. She implied that.
Two, no one said baking soda give naturals waist length hair. (Who taking who words out of context now?) Deborah meant, some naturals are waist length, many use baking soda (sera252). Obviously it can’t be that bad. If it was “bad” then why ARE many naturals waist length? By you saying that baking soda is “bad” for hair shouldn’t we all be bald, have burns, or at least have ill-maintained hair? If you read the paper JC did at The Natural Haven, you would have known small incriments of baking soda doesn’t relax your hair, or distrub the cuticle AT ALL. People really need to research their researcher.

Did Kimmay ever correct the video? It would be really classy if she did. 🙂

  78. So wait, we ALL have to support her? Even when she DEAD WRONG? Great, now I have to be trapped in someone’s else’s box of support. For me support for the black community is tell you when you did something wrong. Stans (not to be confused with ‘fans’) will let you get away with murder.

@sydney: Holy smokes man! She actually blocked you! Whoa. This is the chick I’m supposed to mindlessly support? Kimmay doesn’t seem to mindlessly support her fan’s (or ex-fans’s) POV.

@kadiane*francophone: So you saying the majority of youtube gurus DON’T use their brains? I sure many would take offense at that. There’s no need to belittle people to bring up your argument. SMDH.

  79. @Therealesteye

Yes, she did say baking soda was wrong. She even brought in a ‘scientist’ with shady sources to back her findings, that it shouldn’t be used on hair.

    So yeah. 🙂

  80. I’m a subby to kimmaytube & I am very happy for her progress. Just looking at how dry & brittle her hair was before she started researching & implementing her learning into her regime proves that her methods are working for her.

Her videos are also VERY professionally done & clear. Her speaking voice is PERFECT for making commentary.

However, I have to be a little ‘Negative Nancy’ here bc I agree with Angelina; she tends to be condescending. She’s also VERY defensive when someone makes a comment that she doesn’t agree with. She tries to cover it up with a smiley face but she ain’t foolin’ the kid! LOL The thing is, we ALL have opinions; it’s life! You don’t have to agree with everything I say & I probably won’t agree with the things you say BUT I appreciate your opinion. I wouldn’t be defensive or condescending when replying to you; that’s just silly & highly immature.

I know people have stated before, “if you don’t like them, unsubscribe” but I feel like there are other things of hers I enjoy watching; I enjoyed the financial series & when she does product reviews (when she does them) so that’s why I stay subbed to her.

None of us are perfect & growth is a lifelong journey! Hopefully she will read this, take heed & work on her attitude & defensiveness. If one person says something, you can listen & move on without change but if MULTIPLE people are saying the same thing, maybe there’s some truth to it.

    Peace, ya’ll.

    LOVE BGLHONLINE, btw 🙂

  81. I really like the info Kimmay has to offer, but I agree that she doesn’t have the best attitude. I’m sure all her older subbies remember her making a vlog last year lashing out on people who were embedding her videos without her permission. I left a comment saying I’m sure her subscribers were unaware of this apparent copyright infringement and that I thought she was being a little hard on her fans who were simply trying to spread her word. Note: I hadn’t ever embedded any of her videos before, but I still could understand why someone would think it was okay since she hadn’t disabled it.

Anyway, I wasn’t rude or disrespectful about it AT ALL but she still didn’t approve my comment AND blocked me. Maybe it’s just me, but ever since then, she’s kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

  82. Even thought she is not always accurate. She BY FAR the person that makes the most sense on Youtube when it can to explaining why this method and why not this one. At least she uses her brain and her ability to read and her education to TRY to understand the science behind things. Nobody else does that on Youtube. Not that i know of.

For example how can one dimiss her baking soda information based on : ”other people do it and have long hair”. I’m not saying you should not challenge what she says but please do it properly. I can say other people flat iron their hair every 2 weeks and they have long flowing hair, so heat is not damaging. Does that make sens ? People! We can do better then that.

  83. I like Kimmaytube and take in a lot of her advice. I also will be copying her leave-in condition recipe.

  84. Kimmaytube is one of the most informative, impressive and professional YouTube hair video bloggers out there. She attracts a ton of subscribers and with that comes more scrutiny and interest from those that feel she believes she is superior in knowledge to them or that she has appointed herself the font of natural knowledge. A lot of criticism toward her comes from natural hair care forum users who seem happy to shoot her down for her assertion that she is an authorative voice on natural hair care while sounding as though they feel superior to kimmaytube.

I see criticism of the following (my view in brackets)

    – kimmaytube pushes curl def and only talks about kinky curly (despite doing protective style vids and tutorials and informing viewers that she’s not a pj and found what works for her. Her hair is curly, why should she not show it as it is?)

    – kimmay is patronising/superior/talks as though she is uber successful and doing better than most (she talks slowly so people, some non English speaking, can understand her but people ask her the same questions that she’s already answered very clearly over and over. True she’s smart and not afraid to display confidence and knowledge but why is that so non endearing in a youtuber but worthy of stan status in celebrities/public figures? I applaud her can/will do attitude. She is a successful female, it shows and while some see it as snobbishness, I find it refreshing to see a non messy woman who never seems to come across as pushing being natural on her subbies or any divisive kind of attitude. I do wish she’d answer more comments but she is not alone in low subscriber interaction on YT.

    – baking soda gate – people seem most troubled by her scientific findings and assertions. True she presents her info as the TRUTH but to me she sees it as her truth. As a YT viewer, I see all vloggers as presenting their truth as it is for them and any science they may come up with only relates to their hair done as a limited experiment in their house/bathroom/kitchen. Never has kimmaytube said she did lab tests on x amount of volunteers or has any FDA etc approval. She never professed to be Einstein or Pasteur. Baking soda didn’t work for her. She never said people shouldn’t try it for themselves.

These days youtubers can’t do anything right and the amount of criticism levelled at popular youtubers whether it’s because they sell products (blackonyx), cut THEIR hair off (chisellecoutures to the horror of closet type 3 obsessives all over YT), relax their natural hair (naturalhairgrwthshow) or present home-based science experiments like kimmay, is horrendous and slightly embarassing. The online black hair community is extremely unsupportive, judgemental and dysfunctional. Of course youtubers are not perfect nor do I watch YT vids thinking that I will find the holy Grail of hair care. But with greater popularity comes criticism and vloggers should accept it as a fact of the anonymous Internet.

  85. What? She doesnt just speak about curl definition… If you go on her channel she speaks alot about protective styles and preserving the hair…and if she does curls they are done by flexirods and she speaks about how to keep them looking fresh. I woulndt call that curl definition because that isnt her natural curl patterns….and Im pretty sure EVERYONE doesnt think baking soda is bad…im sure it still works for some and for others, she simply said that baking soda was not an actual natural product…..and id surmise that baking soda isnt the driving force for waist length hair….im not attacking anyone i just feel like Kimmaytube vids are being taken out of context a bit

  86. Not much of a fan, she can’t style except when it comes for curl definition. Then, she had the audacity to say to her audience that she wasn’t curl obsessed. However, if you look hat her past hair styling videos and that PRETTY MUCH ALL she does. Does anyone even style hair anymore? It’s all curl definition, curl definition, and more curl definition. I like curls as much as the next person, but come on.

  87. Not really a fan. I am still subscribed, I just only prefer to see the hairstyles (which isn’t much), and I don’t listen to her when it comes to science. Now everyone thinks baking soda is bad for hair, however, many naturals were using baking soda before who are now waist length.

I use it and it’s done nothing to my hair.

The only people I listen to when it comes to science is The Natural Haven and The Beauty Brains. They are actually trained in it. Shame, I actually really liked her channel.

  88. Thank you so much for sharing. I had never heard of her and so I checked out her channel and it is the truth! The videos and diagrams definitely make it easier to understand the scientific aspects of (natural) hair!

  89. Kimmaytube is great, I enjoy most of her videos (not much for fashion unfortunately) though I must stress that she is nothing like JC of Natural Haven, JC is a qualified Scientist while Kimmaytube is not.

  90. I think her channel is definitely informative. She touches upon things I didn’t think about when it comes to hair care, but I think she needs to watch her language and tone. Sometimes in the videos she is condescending. That’s a turn off. We all need to support each other and lift and love each other in this natural hair process.

  91. My friend used this stuff and is 100% hooked, she stoped buying all the other hair prouducts and mostly sticks to her routine. When it gets a little try, she puts a little of her oil mix in her hair. It’s the truth. She should have bottled it up and sold it.

  92. Kim’s youtube channel was actually the first thing I found when I began going natural in January. Her haircare advice has helped me manage, protect, and grow my hair and style it in so many ways. Plus, I love that she backs her haircare regimens with scientific facts and isn’t afraid to have a debate. lol

  93. i was JUST watching her videos. i LOVE her. i always recommend her to anyone that’s transitioning or currently natural

  94. Thank you for providing the kimmaytube link! I’ve only watched the first video and I’m already impressed. Thank you for continuing to be a great resource.

  95. yup! been slacking off on my youtube lately, but i’ve been following kimmaytube for a while. love her!

  96. I looove her channel. I really took in her financial advice she did, I think it was called Advice to 20 yr old me. Im not sure but I took the whole series to heart. Im 20 & managing the little debt I have & I hope to keep that way! LOL Thanks Kim!

  97. I love KimmayTube. I’ve learned so much from her during my natural hair journey watching youtube videos, and mimicking her different tips & tricks for natural hair.!!! Thanx.~~ 😉

  98. Yes,I am fan of Kim and her You Tube channel…She is very informative and her hair growth is amazing. I am seeking results in hair growth, as well as healthy hair, and she provides the tips I need, as well as styles.
