Kalae All Day // Natural Hair Style Icon

*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally

Introduce yourself.
K: I live in “Morningside Heights”, but I’m reppin HARLEM ALL DAY. I’m a scandalous vandal looking for things to mishandle. OR a rapper/singer/songwriter.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
K: God made that decision. I just never counteracted it.

When and how did you transition into natural hair?
K: Place: Womb Time: Around October 1988

In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
K: It’s been awesome the whole time. I would imagine liberation for those who had perms since they were young…Kind of like Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad. Now you back and show others the way OUT!

How would you describe your hair?
K: It’s curly, straight, kinky, wavy depending on which strand you pull out. Not very thick until I tease it into a fro. That’s probably why I love wearing it this way. 🙂

What is your regimen?
K: About 2x a week I separate my hair into 4 sections and put in lots of shea butter, pick it out and braid. I let it chill over night and then wash with whatever shampoo and conditioner is in the bathroom. I try to wash only my scalp with the shampoo so i don’t dry out my ends. Put some sort of leave in conditioner or oil or whatever’s around to lubricate the hair follicles, then shake dry and fluff. BONG.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
K: I dyed it WAY too much as a child because I was “experimenting”. Ladies, leave your hair alone unless you know how to take care of it PROPERLY.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?
K: www.KalaeAllDay.com

Anything else you want to add?
K: Be a goddess and spread love wherever you go and pay it forward even if no one gave it to you first, nah’mean?

  1. Been listening to her music since early last year, she’s mad dope. I didn’t know we were the same age, well I’m a tad big older August baby here and her in October. cool

  2. She’s *in Sunshine’s voice* AWESOME! And you can tell just by reading this interview. Love everything about her!

  3. Her hair and outfit styles are gorgeous. Plus that 1st pic with the black lipstick is cool, because not every woman can pull off that look but you did :).

  4. I love her response to “Why did you make the decision to go natural?” I always giving the boring answer of ‘I’ve never had a relaxer’
This interview is great and entertaining

  5. I adore this woman. Her personality is so vibrant, it just jumps off the page. Plus she is fiercely gorgeous and I DIE for her hair. My favorite lines:

Womb — Hilariously awesome. And this part too:

    Work it, girl.

  6. The should be the new BGLH motto. Where did you go natural? Womb.

The end. I love that she’s so nonchalant about it, which is the way it should be. It grows like this, so it’s like this. Case closed.
