Introduce yourself!
J: Hi, I’m Jessica from Louisiana.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
J: Self understanding, encouragement from those close to me and truly becoming one with what was given to me. Bone straight was plastered in my brain; I didn’t realize what I had with my natural hair. I had been natural my entire life until the years of 2006-2007. The year of 2008 I began to return to my natural state. I long-term transitioned.
How would you describe your texture?
J: I’d totally say it’s a mixture. But I’m guessing 3C and 4A and some others, but honestly whatever it feels like being that day. I really don’t like to dabble in textures I just say I’m natural.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
J: It just really comes down to what feels right. Whether big hair, an updo, ponytail, twists, or experimenting, I enjoy them all.
What does wash day look like for you?
J: It’s really nothing special 🙂 I don’t even use what you’d consider a “natural hair” shampoo sometimes. It’s either Suave or Giovanni. I just use what works for me. I have sensitive skin as well, so me mixing up products is something I try to stay far away from so that it won’t cause any problems.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
J: A bun or ponytail.
How do you combat shrinkage?
J: Complete side-eye 🙂 what will be, will be. Some days there is no product that will even come close to helping, but I find Shea Moisture’s Deep Conditioning Masque, Mizani Moisturizer and also Cantu products have helped with stretching…All tried at different times.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
J: The middle portion of my hair. It’s the thickest and sometimes has a mind of its own.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
J: Moisturize
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
J: Let my hair become dried out and styling will be a “NO – go”.
