Jennifer // Natural Hair Style Icon

“I had no idea that lots of women didn’t get perms. I thought that was what every black woman did. I’m glad I educated myself about it… I was inspired.”

Where you from?
J:
I’m from Atlanta!!!! I also rep New Orleans, my birthplace. I am a student at Bethune-Cookman University. Mass Communications major!

Why did you go natural?
J:
I have been 100% natural since December 25, 2009! I decided to go natural after watching the Tyra Show on good hair. One of the guests did a mini big chop on the show, so I decided to research more about it. After that I thought natural was the only way to be. I was so mad that I didn’t know about natural hair sooner. I had no idea that lots of women didn’t get perms. I thought that was what every black woman did. I’m glad I educated myself about it. So, I was inspired.

Why did you do a second big chop?
J:
I decided to big chop again because I absolutely love the way women look with fades and low cuts. I would have done it the first time around but I wasn’t mentally ready for that. The day I decided to cut it, I kept going going back and forth in my head about if I really wanted to cut it. Only because I was planning on growing it out. I was almost at my 5 month mark. I just decided it’s now or never and I absolutely love it!!

How are you styling your hair now that it’s short?
J:
I still co- wash my hair, deep condition, and oil it. I still want to take care of it because it can definitely still look a mess at this length. I’ve only had this cut for a couple months now, so I haven’t really experimented with accessories yet. I love the cut so much that I don’t really want to. I just brush and go!

What tips do you have for other new naturals?
J:
Have fun with your hair! Try something different. New accessories. New make-up. And don’t expect your hair to look like someone else hair. Just find out what works for you. Also, be secure with yourself and your hair. You don’t want other people’s negative opinions to change how you feel about YOUR hair.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

Anything else you want to add?
J:
I know some woman have fears about doing the big chop and I just want to show them that having short hair can still be cute, stylish and girly. Oh yeah and if you think you don’t have the “head shape” for a cut like mine, you do! That was one of my fears but it’s silly. Anyone can wear this cut.

It’s great to see more naturals on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University. I graduated class of 2008 with a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy and was one of about 4 afro wearing sisters in our senior class. Congrats on your journey!

  9. Great advice! Everyone will not have the same results, it’s all about loving your own hair the way it is.
