Jasmine // Natural Hair Style Icon

Where do you live?
J:
I was born and raised in the city of brotherly love; love it dearly but desperately yearning for a break from it. I am currently a student at Philadelphia University, going into my junior year in the fall, studying Fashion Merchandising.

Why did you go natural?
J:
I never really MADE the decision to go natural, I just always was. My mother talked about possibly perming my hair when I was younger, but thank God I had a hairdresser who was against it and taught me to embrace my wavy/curly hair.

I embraced my natural hair when I was first introduced to my TRUE curl pattern. After 18 years of blow-drying and straightening, you can imagine how much heat damage one’s hair could have, so when I decided to cut my hair short my senior year of high school, I washed it for the first time and was amazed with the curls that came about. From short, to the length it is now, I had to endure the awkward length stage, but doing so helped me to familarize myself with the needs and wants of my curly bush. Ever since then, I have been in love with my hair.

Going/being natural hasn’t affected me much, I was always the quirky girl who dressed different, so when I do decide to wear my hair natural (because I have my moments when I want it straight) I’m the quirky girl who dresses different, with the big hair. I get tons of stares, compliments and inquiries, but I enjoy the attention. But it has affected the people around me, I’m so pro-natural that I have a few of my college friends attempting to do so; one has been doing very well and hasn’t had a perm in a year:)

What’s your regimen?
J:
My regimen isn’t anything fantastic, it’s the summertime so it’s pretty basic. I wash and condition my hair with the Organix brand Nourishing Coconut Milk, which my hair LOVES. Then I put Lemongrass & Rosemary Creme of Nature leave-in Conditioner in because my hair can get very dry. I also use Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk sometimes to give my curls a little definition; but most of the time I just let it air dry, I don’t like my hair too perfect,-looking, I like when it’s a little messy.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
J:
The only mistake that I have made is having had my hair blonde and not having the appropriate products to keep it healthy. My hair broke off slowly but surely; so i’ve learned to take better care of it.

What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
J:
The best thing I do for my hair is keeping it properly moisturized; I wish I could assist with a list of products, but I’m still experimenting myself.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

  3. Alright Fashion Merchandising major!! Woooo! Your name is also very very beautiful 😉

I use Cream of Nature’s leave-in, I’m currently trying to decide whether my hair like that or Cantu’s leave-in better.

  4. You’re hair madame is the business. I’m BC’ing next Saturday, my hair can’t wait to be like yours when it grows up!

  5. Thanks ladies:)

Olivia, I go to Diadem Salon on Germantown Ave, mainly when I want a really good straightening job or coloring; been going to her since I was 12.

  6. That pic of you in the plaid shirt and the jacket is fantastic. You and your hair both look like you’re having a blast!

  7. PHILLY!!!! Your hair is boss! I’m from Philly and need a hair dresser. Who do you go to? I’ve been natural for nearly 2 years but I’m afraid to let anyone touch my hair aside from getting full weaves.
