Charissa says;
I spotted these photos on MediaTakeOut.com and I thought Jada’s hair was awesome! I know the pictures aren’t the most flattering since she was caught working out, but I love how thick her hair is.
The pictures aren’t flattering but I love it nonetheless! That’s a lot of hair! What are your thoughts ladies?

I remember hearing that Quincy Jones was told when he was growing up:You have Indian blood ,and he was shocked to find out NO Indian blood. We ALL are mixed with something, from the bad old slave days.If thats Jada’s hair
more power to her. Remember HUMIDITY is the black woman’s KRYPTONITE.
Jada Pinkett Smith is from Baltimore (as am I) and is well known here. Both of her parents are Black. Perhaps some family members many generations back were not, but most every Black person can say that. Quoting wikipedia does not prove a point as wikipedia is widely known to often be inaccurate b/c they gather information from other internet sources. (Doesn’t everybody know that?) I checked wikipedia for myself and it stated that she is of mixed ancestry but it did not specify what side of the family. More importantly, it’s a shame that people are still using antiquated terms like “good hair.” Step into 2013, please…
I thinm you have the issue witb Wikipedia backwards. The issue isn’t that people cite other sources (since thats how academics write papers, you know), the issue is that it is open source, meaning that ANYONE can edit it. Wikipedia has gotten significantly better since it was first established at moderating and letting others know when an article and entry on there is questionable. Things have changed in the last decade and though Wikipedia is not perfect, it has improved since the early days when no one could trust it.
Either way, sources say she’s mixed. The fact that this seems tobother people so much is worrisome. Being mixed does not automatically equate to certain kinds of hai texture and the fact that somany people seem threatened by the prospect of her being so certainly causes an eyebrow to be raised.
Either way, her hair looks nice. True story, bro.
I do not understand why a lot of you women are still hung up on the Good hair Bad hair whether a person is of mixed heritage or not. Have any of you read the book Better Than Good Hair. There is no such thing as good or bad hair, but there is a difference in chemically altered(for some) and natural hair(mixed heritage or not). When is someone besides me and Alex going to highlight the fact that Jada and her friends are out doing a workout. Since when a woman has to get dolled up for a walk in the neighborhood in sweats with her friends? Wake up Ladies and appreciate real beauty that includes Jada’s and get off the Good hair Bad hair crap!!!
So, now i have to be mixed in order to have this so called good hair? Wow! What has the world come to? Accept your hair whether you’re Asian, Black, White…whatever. Who gives a care what she is. If your hair is pretty, it’s pretty. I don’t want someone to assume I’m mixed just because of how my hair looks. I’ve been asked the mixed question before and it’s just annoying.
That’s not Jada’s real hair. Several years ago she has very short hair & came out with a head full of hair. She wears a full lace wig.
Some of u women are so smell of desperation! THIS WOMEN IS MIXED! why on earth are yall saying she is not MIXED. SMFH
Is this really necessary? We see a photo of a celebrity doing something healthy (working out with her friends) with her hair down and curly, and instead enjoying this positive representation of a woman (whether black, white or other) we fall into the same ignorant and counter productive discussions of good hair, and miscegenation.
Please stop the madness
That is not a weave. Jada’s mother is Portuguese and Jewish and her Father is west indian. that is why her REAL hair looks like that.
@jillian : SHUTUP. Stop this stupidity.
Jewish is a religion not aan ethnicity so that doesnt tell us anything.
here is video of jada’s mother : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi8guMA9_Hc&list=PLA07C3DE91B1E617F&index=1
Jada ‘s mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones hasnt ever said that nor has jada. She keeps her hair cut short like how jada used to.
Don’t ever say that to someone of Jewish ancestry because they will beg to differ, and her mother -is- Portuguese-Jewish
On the Ethnoreligion of Judaism –
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_ethnic_divisions
Jada Pinkett Smith’s wikipedia page – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jada_Pinkett_Smith
So let’s not judge so quickly, hm? It’s okay if that’s how Jada’s hair naturally is. That’s not a reason to lash out at anyone.
Is this a recent picture? Because I recently saw a picture of her and the side(s) were cut off similar to her daughter Willow’s.
destiny: this pic is from last summer, august 2011. and yes jada has shaved the side of her head. she also wears braid extensions.
this is either a wig or weave or weave fusion. this is not all jada;s hair.
I think it’s time we give up the notion that all pictures of women should be flattering. It’s limiting and inauthentic.
Some of the comments that were written here are depressing. We are at it again – ascribing greater value to a certain type of hair. Jada’s hair is not superior to Whoopi’s nor to Nina Simone’s. Let’s pass the small issues and pat each other back’s for being the best we can be.
sorry,
Ms Pinkett, Smith is of mixed heritage, like so many other of our famous folk.
Jada has rocked all levels of hair-dos and don’ts, but her own natural hair is that oil and water straight wave kind.
this IS her own hair.
her hair grows fast, unless she cuts it.
if you want to see early jada long hair…see her in the movie ‘The InkWell’….
she wasn’t well known then, but she was already an accomplished actress.
and the ‘cotton hair comment’ was definitely out of place here.
i laugh because we still say good and bad hair, like School Daze, but i judge my own hair as BAD, when i can’t get a come through my naps, and like it a lot better, when it naturally calms down and gets GOOD, or more combable during the week.
it’s just words.
no foul or fair over descriptives…when you truly mean no foul or fair.
we ain’t gonna start the wanna be, brown paper bag, jigaboo, picaninny,I got better hair than you stuff here, are we?
we rock so much product, and all we need now is knowledge to rock every type of hair we got, with much glory ladies.
peace out
Taykn
I love School Daze great movie
Jada is not mixed… Her mom is black and do is her dad! I used to live across the street from him in Baltimore!
hellooo slavery?, all Black people with slave ancestors are mixed,
Part kidnapped West African and part slave owning european and whatever else etc its all up in our history.
…..and these other posts about ‘good genes’ everyone has good hair, from Solange to Lauryn to Francescalocs on youtube, Kelis to Lianne La Havas and if you dont believe me …check out ‘Contemporary Natural Hair’ on facebook
Time to start liking our black skinned afro haired selves people, stop doing the slave masters work already! kmt

I agree but Jada actually is mixed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jada_Pinkett_Smith
smh!!! Ur so she is MIXED FOOL! STOP being desperate to prove a point google her
I thought she was well known for wearing weaves? When did she stop? LOL.
Ladies, let’s not forget Jada is a mixed chick, and this is her natural hair.
We black women can have natural and long hair, but it requires a lot of time, money, cares and above all patience.
Mine are around my shoulder and they are all natural
callypyge : mixed with what ?
According to her Wikipedia page – West Indian, Portuguese and Jewish.
Wow these comments are over the top. Are we still hungup on ” good genes” what would that be? Black cotton? Seems to me black women still hate themselves. I thought this was a site for hairstyles not self hatred. Might as well be back on the plantation. Smh
She looks pretty in the photo. I do not understand why the publisher stated that the photo is not flattering. The photo is flatering for Jada picket. You do not always have to dress up to look pretty. Jada is pretty is sweats or a fancy dress. That is true beauty.
Jada Pinkett got good hair. That is where her hot son Jaden Smith got his luscious good hair from.
Looks European to me.
She looks great and that is all that matters. Glad I am not in the spotlight like her. We all know that black women can and have long hair. My hair is a lot longer than hers and I get tired of people asking me if my hair is real. Not all black women wear weaves or wigs.
Tenneseenatural, I agree with you. My hair is all natural and long (down to my butt) and I get people asking me all the time if it’s my real hair
I dont know the jury is still out on Jada’s hair being all hers. I remember when she appeared( i think on the cover of Essence)after having really really short hair and she then all of a sudden had this long hair(she was advertising for Carol’s Daughter when it first appeared on the scene) I dont know but Ive always thought it was a fushion weave or something. Whatever the case she wears her hair exactly like this all the time. I love the look on her though.
Her hair looks good, and she has some really pretty eyes as well.
Check out this little cute natural haired 10yr old singing, she’s pretty good lover her hair.

well, several years ago, essence mag had jada on the cover with her hair like this and a lot of people wrote in asking why they would put her on the cover with a weave in her hair. and the editor in chief responded that it is jada’s hair.
and from that same interview about the wig:
C+C: Jada has rocked her hair long, short, straight and curly! What’s her go-to look?
MH: Jada’s “go-to” hair style is her natural waves. Her natural hair is really full, wavy and beautiful. This is a style that’s versatile and can take her from day to evening.
sweett: I remember that Essence cover.
The EIC responded w a carefully worded statement:
“Jada came with her air out and said that she needed no hair styling”.
I dont think then or now is this jada’s hair.
Either way her hair is naturally long. I don’t understand why it is hard for people to see that celebs are people too and just like we have seen so many beautiful long haired natural people on here…there are beautiful long haired natural celebs out there too…No one is exempt. Smh.
Oh dear. Weave or not argument again. With all of the real things to think about. ANYWAY. She looks good and it looks like her hair.
Peace and Love
Janna
side note, i bet those other ladies are note too thrilled to be showing up online in their workout gear, lol. the cost of having celeb friends i guess.
Very pretty hair
Beautiful!! Love it!
She looks so much better like this…wild and free. That’s my hair!
Seriously, it looks like a weave to me. I don’t think that is her real hair.
How does it look like a weave?? This is her natural hair. She’s been wearing it like this for years. Nothing new here….and no weave either lol
A direct quote from a May, 2011 interview with celebrity stylist Marcia Hamilton, who has been Jada’s hair stylist for the past 4 years: “My fave style that I’ve created for Jada was the “Euro Bang. This was created with a full weave then I cut a bold, sharp fringe to frame her gorgeous eyes.”
I don’t know why some people believes because you are natural, you don’t wear pieces etc…..
And again celebrities do use pieces, extensions, wigs etc… to switch up and protect their hair and even everyday (some)people do so.
Personally, I think it looks good but also a bit wiggy. Is that really ALL of her hair? Either way, she always looks well put together!
but i dont see any bangs…
Of course she wears weaves at times. But i wanted to know how do you know that in this particular picture, she is wearing a weave. That was my question.
Either way her hair is naturally long. I don’t understand why it is hard for people to see that celebs are people too and just like we have seen so many beautiful long haired natural people on here…there are beautiful long haired natural celebs out there too…No one is exempt.
nana: how do u know her hair is naturally long?
from “differnt world” to woo jada wore short short short hair.
that quote was a clip from 1 interview, here is some more of that same interview:
C+C: Jada has rocked her hair long, short, straight and curly! What’s her go-to look?
MH: Jada’s “go-to” hair style is her natural waves. Her natural hair is really full, wavy and beautiful. This is a style that’s versatile and can take her from day to evening.
Yea I agree…
Looks weavy to me too.
And still how do yall know she’s natural? These are all SPECULATIONS…
It’s BEAUTIFUL!
It’s a weave. She looks fab & I’m sure she has the receipt, so let’s move on. 🙂
WELL I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT SHE HAS REALLY LONG HAIR. SO I DONT THINK ITS A WIG. IM NOT SAYING SHE NEVER WEARS WIGS BUT SHE HAS BEAUTIFUL HAIR. HER DAUGHTER WILLOW HAS GORGOEUS HAIR TOO!
lol i was thinking the same thing…i know some of ya’ll on your high horses are gonna get me for this (save the “what does natural hair look like” )…but if you ask me her hair doesn’t look natural (it could be, im not saying it’s not, just saying if i were to see her walking down the street, i wouldn’t think it was natural). either way she looks great as usual even in her jogging pants 🙂
Love it! That is a LOT of hair lol
Cheekbone implants?? Thought we were talking about hair??
But anyway, her hair looks fab and so thick.
yes i mentioned her cheekbones….if it’s too non-pc…well, sorry!
Her hair looks good and I didn’t know she was fully natural!
I just can’t get over her cheekbone implants though (or whatever she did to her face). Why Jada?! You were so beautiful! Ah well…
?
So, It wasn’t just me who noticed the filler or whatever it is in her cheeks while watching her show. Her cheeks are weird looking. I think its some kind of filler like Juvederm or something.
Her hair’s great, though and she has always rocked her natural even back to her rock band, Wicked Wisdom days.
Love it. I didn’t know she had natural hair. I know she’s working out but she looks great to me.
I didn’t either! I love the mane though. So fly.
Who wear’s their hair out when they’re exercising? Just thinking about it makes my neck overheat.
and that caption about no wedding ring (which i know is mediatakeout, not bglh)…but many people don’t wear their wedding bands when exercising especially when running because your fingers can swell. stars in general seem not to care about wearing their wedding bands. it’s treated like fashion jewelry, sometimes you wear it, sometimes you don’t.
Exactly! I don’t wear jewelry when I’m at the gym! I do weight training and having weight pressing the metal on my fingers hurt; plus it may damage what I’m wearing.
I also put in my hair up on top of my hair to keep it out of the way of my workouts; most people I see at the gym do…
Wow, that sounds so vain! I’d be insulted if I stood before God with someone vowing to spend my life with them for better or worse, and then they turn around and treat the ring that’s a symbol of our love and devotion to ourselves and before God like fashion jewelry. People like that can afford to have a big rock for vanity purposes and an elegant band with an inset diamond. …But then again, it’s 2011, I’m probably by myself on that one.
Anyhow, great article Clutch, and I enjoy all of your articles too, BGLH!
Not everyone needs rings to*prove* their devotion to each other.
The ring is a symbol of your love. It’s not love itself. So it really shouldn’t matter what you do with it as long as you are honoring the vows you made.
No, your love for your husband is a symbol of your love. A ring is a piece of jewelry. My husband and I have been married for three years. We never wore rings. You know why? Because we don’t like wearing rings. You people need to get over yourselves and judgement.
So late, but yes girlllll. ????
What’s new here? She always wears her hair like this…
OK?
She may not be ‘red carpet ready’ in these shots. But she still looks great. Work it, Jada!
I agree, I think she looks great too!
+ 1
I don’t understand the reveal part because Jada always wears her natural hair.
I agree. There’s no reveal. She’s always natural. Sometimes she’s just blown out.
True. Jada has ALWAYS worn her hair naturally. She just happens to have a naturally loose curl pattern although in this pic, her curls looks a bit stretched out probably from a blow dryer.
she wears it out on her show hawthorne a lot.
Come on! This is NOT jada’s real hair.
This is a “natural” wig or weave.
What is this site’s definition of natural?
Hater! I’ve been doing hair for 15 years, as well as being a black woman with hair past my waist. Hair like this is possible with good genes and great maintenance. Maybe u should stop hating on women like Jada and take care of ur hair (which I doubt is this nice). Black women kill me, accusing some of us of lying about our hair because yours looks like black cotton on your head
Was there any need to speak to her that way? All you’re doing is ‘hating’ as well. You could have just said that it was her real hair and explained/shared how one could attain it. For your information I’ve got ‘black cottony’ hair which I love! I’d appreciate it if you stopped using such terms to refer to type 4 hair negatively. This is a black hair care forum in which our natural textures are meant to be celebrated, not stratified. Thanks.
U explained that very well I totally agree with u all of our Black is Beautiful X0X0
Well said. If you’re going to hate on “black cotton” hair then why the hell are you even on this site?
Thats right I love my hair and its like cotton when I want it 2 and silk if I feel like it black hair is the most versatile it does what ever I make it do and any body that has ever felt cotton can tell u it feels good I Don’t give a h e hockey sticks if Jada hair is real or not if she bought that ish its hers u didnt milk that cow whos milk u drink but when u buy the milk from the store the milk is yours you probly didn’t raise that chicken whos eggs u eat but when u went to the store and bought them eggs they became yours so if that lady went 2 the store and bought her hair then it’s hers real talk we all know we like the way cotton feel stop playin love ones self X0X0
What’s worse is the fact that a hairdresser said that – including the ‘good genes’ criteria. I sure hope my daughters never come across a hairdresser like her.
Thank. You.
Thank You Asha. It’s about all types of hair we Black women are learning to love.
this is her real hair, i saw her real hair straight and it was long.
Surprise,it is indeed all her own hair. Lovely, isn’t she?
