How I Helped My Mom Regrow Her Edges in 5 Months

By Gabrielle Allen of Strawberricurls.com

Black women seem to suffer from a common problem which are thinning edges. I am not saying that its exclusive to our race but we do wear weaves and braids more than any race of people I know in this day and age.

Take my mother for example. She told me that since she was a kid , her edges have been in horrible condition and to make matters worse, she wore weaves, tight weaves for a while. I spent my summer at her house and over the summer and learned just how damaged her edges were.

She said she didn’t want to go natural and honestly, I wasn’t trying to convince her to do so. I told her all I cared about was her hair being healthy and I wasn’t trying to pressure her into transitioning. Well…. she asked me to put a perm on her head and I told her no, especially after I saw her edges! I told her hair was not ready to handle a chemical service and it need some serious TLC. Again, let me reiterate that I was not trying to get her to transition, I simply wanted her to have healthy hair.

Fast forward…. I started thinking of ways that I knew to grow out thinning hair and from what I could tell just by looking, her edges were suffering from traction alopecia.

Traction alopecia is a form of alopecia, or gradual hair loss, caused primarily by pulling force being applied to the hair. This commonly results from the sufferer frequently wearing his/her hair in a particularly tight ponytail, pigtails, or braids. It is also seen occasionally in long-haired toy dogs whose owners use barrettes to keep hair out of the dogs’ faces.

Traction alopecia is a substantial risk in hair weaves, which can be worn either to conceal hair loss, or purely for cosmetic purposes. The former involves creating a braid around the head below the existing hairline, to which an extended-wear hairpiece, or wig, is attached. Since the hair of the braid is still growing, it requires frequent maintenance, which involves the hairpiece being removed, the natural hair braided again, and the piece snugly reattached. The tight braiding and snug hairpiece cause tension on the hair that is already at risk for falling out. Traction Alopecia is one of the most common causes of hair loss in African American women. Although the aforementioned style is one of the culprits, hairstyles such as dreadlocks and single (extension) braids can also have the same effect. Men and women who have suffered from Traction Alopecia have found that the hair loss occurs most at the hair line – primarily around the temples and the sides of their heads. (SOURCE)

Now don’t get it twisted. Weaves are a great protective style when done RIGHT and not put in too tight. But if you do it wrong, it a can backfire on you and, well, the above happens.

This is what mama dukes hairline looked like when we started

So I felt like ….

Originally my plan was to take her out her weaves and treat it but umm she wasn’t having that. So I told her that she could have the weaves as long as I did them and as long as she still applied the Jamaican Black Castor Oil EVERY night. She agreed.

So the plan in short was JBCO (Jamaican black castor oil) every night and moisturize and seal the rest of her hair while it was in the tracks. And when we took it down, we did a full day of hair treatments. Shampoo, protein treatment, deep condition, moisturize and seal and style.

She came to the conclusion that she didn’t want another weave in and she just wanted to wear her hair. She saw me twisting mine and looked at me…… I looked back at her…… and she looked at me some more and proceeded to say …… “I want my hair like that”

-______- ……. yea i saw that coming.

She still had permed ends so I did my best to blend that end with the rest of it. I did cut some of the permed ends off but not all. She wore the twists for WEEKS but she did moisturize and seal her hair really well during that time (although she hated wash day).

I left for school in August, after having cared for her hair since June. Before I left I showed her what to do and handed over the reigns. She still applied JBCO nightly and as far as I know, kept up her wash days up.. lol.

Well the proof is in the pudding because she sent me a picture of her edges 5 MONTHS LATER and this what they looked like:

“Damn I’m Good!”

LOL! But no all jokes aside, I was kind of afraid she wouldn’t keep it up because I know she doesn’t like to do her hair. I’m proud of her and as much as she was like “Oh im not going natural” ….guess what… She had the remainder of her permed ends cut off and now she is completely and 100% percent natural.

~hits my dougie~

  1. 1st I want to say good job on helping your mother!! I love that!! 2nd I need your help. Lol Is JBCO the only oil you had her massage her scape with every night? What products did you use on her for wash days, name brands I mean? Did you do a weekly wash day or twice a week wash day? Did you do cowashes on her during the week also or not? If you did, what product brands did you use? Oh & last what hair type is she? 4A, 4B or 4C low porosity or high? Sorry for all the questions but I’ve been trying for over two years to grow mine back & I might be using too many oils, the wrong oils, the wrong products or something!! SMH My hair is 4C low porosity.

  2. Oh wow, im helping my hubby grow his bald patch back, it’s working. I use Samson’s secret

  3. I think what you did was a good thing. We (my sister and I) convinced our mom to finally grow out her natural hair and now after a year and a half it’s shoulder length. She initially used to use the excuse that she couldn’t maintain it due to work but she’s been retired for a while now so … work excuse gone. At first the medication she was on for diabetes made the process slower but changes to her diet and incorporation of exercise maintains her sugar levels better than meds so now her hair is growing, it no longer looks wispy and we are all happy.

  4. Actually the ears are exactly the same. They bulge out in the top corner. Can’t believe I even entertained this lol but I hope this helps.

  5. I don’t mean to be negative, but the two pics do not appear to be the same woman. The ears are distinctively different. She has no problem showing her face in the hair loss pic, but the face is hidden in the “results”. I have no reason to hate I would love for this to be true and though some say there is no reason to lie, ppl do it all the time for attention. (Catfish). All she has to do is show a clearer picture. PPl are not hating, they just don’t want to get their hopes up from deception.

  6. I loved this story. What did you recommend to her to use to moisturize while her hair was in the twists?

  7. What a great article! My mom suffers from the same issue but I think her medication is a major factor. I use Jamaican castor oil and I’m going to tell her too. Thanks so much.

  8. Thank you for your post, people please keep in mind everything is not for everybody, with that being said,I also used the jbco in my hair and my daughter’s hair the results for her were excellent however not so much for me and I believe it was because i wasn’t consistent.,but i did have some growth.

  9. I suffer from Traction Alopecia. I do not want to rain on no ones parade but depending how long you have had spares edges, it cannot be solved by simply applying JBCO. I use to wear braids for years and never paid attention to my edges until one day, years later I noticed the damage I did to my temples. I have a few hair but some spot are as smooth as baby skin. I applied every cream in the book, rogain, oils and other creams saying they would help and this every night….nothing happened! so I went to a dermatologist. He prescribed my some mixtures creams to apply on my temple area but he honestly told me that if the bulb of my hair is damaged, the cream and any other creams may not work and the only solution I would have would be hair transplant. I tried his cream , it didn’t work neither. Went back to see him and 2 other dermatologists to see if they would tell me the same story. Hair transplant would be at this time my only solution. My hair bulb is damage and the hair pore is completely closed which is why some areas of my temples are baby smooth.

Should I have taken care of this issue right from the start, it could have been solvable but at this stage, hair transplant is my only solution …and a pricy one so it will have to wait. 🙁

    1. Heat up ur oil in a hot! Wather bowl and massage it on ur problem area ore everywhere for 5-10 min. Be gentle. This will open up closed cuticle and the blood flow will provoque cell production so u will get new hair cuticles. It’s worth to try… My mum was 47 when I did it for her and she had results in 1month.

    2. Use Emu Oil – there are different brands but research and you’ll find one that suite you hair. I use the Pure Range Australian Emu Oil from Amazon (100ml) for £17.00, but Iaso brand from Ebay (££19.00 – 28.00) is just as good. The oil will grow back your hair line/temple.

  10. I’m looking at the hair line where the hair loss was and it looks like all the pieces fit if you follow where it has filled in.

  11. Lol. I can’t believe there is actually a debate about the authenticity of the poster’s results. If you look closely you will see that the top portion of the lady’s ear is CLEARLY hidden under her afro in the ‘after’ photo. Geez. Why would the poster lie? There’s no incentive to do so.

  12. I just did a consultation for a new client today. Her hair is 100 X worse. Poor lady. Due to years of improper weaving. Do I have to use jbco or will any do?

  13. These comments are ridiculous. Why would this woman lie? She’s not trying to sell anyone anything, just sharing an experience. Five months of consistently using the correct shampoos, conditioners, protein treatments, and the correct oils will produce results. ALL FACTS!!!

Anyway, thank you for writing this article.

    1. seriously? do you not see how the cartilage at the top inner ear folds back in a very particular way? so many of you people have nothing to contribute but condemnation and hate, exclamation points and all. the declarative way in which you denounce this woman, and call her a liar, makes you look all the more stupid.

  14. I said it once i’ll say it again. Every time i see one of these post there is a butt load of hater’s, im just about done even looking at the comments, y’all make me sick.

    1. I’m sorry you can’t see the difference! I’m not a “HATER” and see not only the ear difference, but the hair texture is different. If you don’t like the comments, don’t read them. Everyone can not agree with everything ;~<

      1. Of course the hair texture is different it said she went all natural and cut off what was left of the perm.

  15. @MJ…i said the same thing…that’s not the same person. Plus why would she expose at least have of her ‘Mom’s’ face for the issue, but not expose her ‘Mom’s’ face at all with the results…i’m calling it #Lies!

    1. Well to be fair she took the “before” pics but her mom took the “after” pics. Different people will take pics at different angles.

  16. I also had edge issues and I use Just 4 Kinks over the edge hair growth serum. I saw results in 1 month. It contains castor oil and other great ingredients.

    1. Hi,I am not in nigeria at the moment, but when I was, my sister and I used to order online from a nigerian website.can’t remember the website, but I will contact you as soon as I get the details.in the meantime, you can buy from amazon, but I am not so sure if they ship to lagos. Goodluck

  19. Forgetting the great ear debate, I used jbco for 18 months while I wore lace wigs. The stuff works!! My hair went from thin and brittle to thick lush and long. I’m using it on my daughter’s hair as her hair is as fragile as mine was and her edges are slowly being restored. My lesson was that I should have set aside my excitement to do my baby girl’s hair in ponytails and let her baby hair fully grow in. So forget whose damn ear is in the pics….try jbco and make sure to show your own damn ear in your results pic lol.

    1. I’ve had similar results with JBCO but had even better results with lavender and rosemary essential oils mixed with it. I have a feeling her mom also eats well or her body is just in fairly good health also. This is very impressive growth for only 5 months. She was consistent also…

  20. i want to share my testimony on how i gain my nature hair back in just three weeks: i had very thick curly hair.i straightened my hair 2 yr ago.they after some time started 2 fall out.i also having dandruff problem all d time, before i used shampoo called antidruf containing ketoconazole and tugain 2%(minoxidil) have stopped using chemical one year ago.but still i am loosing a lots of hair everyday and my hair has become so thin. when a friend of my visit me and i explain how i lose my hair every day, she told me she was having the same problem 3 months ago and he contacted DR OPINGO online, i please with grace and she gave me DR OPINGO email, i email him immediately and explain about my hair to him, he told me not to worry that he is going to help me out. After DR OPINGO have prepared the spell cream i use for good three weeks my hair grow fast and was very thick, all my girl friends love and cherish my hair thank you DR you can contact his email at: (al*******************@***il.com) his cream will make your hair grow fast and thicker.

    1. Trust Jesus Christ as Savior. He says specifically in His word (The Bible) NOT to go to psychics, witches or anyone who talks with the dark side. God is able to deliver you from all unrighteousness. Even though I know that you are just a person “spamming” to get ppl. to practice witchcraft (maYbe it’s your business or a friends?) but I do NOT want you to show others the side of Satan. According to The Bible…he does NOT have a good future. He will burn in hell forever for hating God and misleading God’s ppl. Just ask God to forgive you of your sin and cleanse you. He will! He has forgiven me too. Thank God for what Jesus did on the cross for the entire world:)

  25. The crystalline form from this pepper, alcoholate, is even a lot more useful than the
oil type for hair regrowth, primarily because the capsaicin in alcoholate gets absorbed into the
pores and skin quicker and less difficult. cup) together, massage onto scalp, be sure
to also cover the length of your hair. For this reason, you have to
find out why that you are losing your hair.

  27. I love this post. It reminded me so much of my mother when she first began her natural hair journey. She would dye her hair every 2 weeks. She would say that black hair can’t be long and water is horrible for her hair lol. I made it a point to prove every claim wrong and show her better alternatives for her hair. Her hair has grown so much. She says her hair has never been past neck length. She is obsessed and I believe I’ve created a MONSTER!! All in all…I’m so happy for her. I love seeing my mom smile.

  28. I hope I can help dispute. I draw and have “an eye” for detail. Please concentrate on the person’s left ear. Look at the top inside curve where there is the flat surface area and notice it is wide, triangular-shaped and slightly domed outward. Then there is an edge that curves in around 80% only to curve out and in again at almost same angles. Were you to draw this on paper you would have a wide stretched-out ‘W’ shape. Finally, you have the section closest to the face that is yet another triangular shape that is dimpled or concave on its’ surface.
I can’t explain it any other way, but I am 100% sure that is the same ear on ‘both’ people. Therefore, it must be the same person because I never heard of interchangeable ears. Have you?

    1. I agree. look at the inner top part of her ear that comes out. It’s the same ear in the same pic, just different angle!!! Anyways, this is great. I’m happy she kept up the routine and her edges grew back. I will definitely purchase some of this JBCO.

  29. I also think that the photos are of two different people. Why not show more of the AFTER persons face, like in the BEFORE photos? That would go along way in obliterating any suspicions. Could this be just another ad for JBCO? Oh well.

  30. I wasted two minutes reading an article I thought would help… These pictures are of TWO different person. Obvious difference in ear shape! How sad!

    1. If you look closer, you will see the angle is different and the lighting is different but the ears are the same. Take a little extra time before you accuse someone of fraud and look like an idiot online. How sad, indeed.

      1. the ears are different I copied both pics and compared the ears are different….smh

  31. i have been reading about this (jbco),i have a problem with LOPECIA ..i literally do not have hair.please help as i am in south africa and there are no stockists of this product in south africa

    1. Hey, you can order JBCO from RUUTOS HAIR they are based here in S.A. I forget their email addres but I think you can google them

    2. Hey! Try Novuhair, well we have this contestant in The Voice of the Philippine who suffer from alopecia. I dont know what kind but she totally had no hair but when she tried Novuhair, it made her grew some hair and she is still continuing the treatment. The product is becoming famous here because it helped many artists who suffer from hair lost to recover especially the infamous Ricky Reyes here in Ph who owns a salon.

  33. Hell naw!! This is not the same person! I won’t be boo boo the fool!! It’s ashame y’all would post this article with these fake photos!!!

  34. Did you know that something as small as a dandruff problem can cause your hair to start thinning. In some cases, female hair loss is a temporary phenomenon, the new hair grow back hair falling. This is hair loss, particularly around the hairline.

  35. For those who prefer to avoid both dangers it is possible to make a natural, homemade tick repellent. In some cases, female hair loss is a temporary phenomenon, the new hair grow back hair falling. This is hair loss, particularly around the hairline.

  36. This made me laugh, smile, and almost wanted to hug your mum hehehe
I teared when she said she wants hair like yours.
    Cool stuff, go innnnnnnnnnnn
Glad her edges grew back and more. Great read

    1. Or look up natural nigerian, she may stock some too – or akua wood of sheabutter cottage. Hope this helps!

  37. history have you tried keranique for that spot I had patches of areas not growing like the rest of my hair and this filled in those spots ,thought it says not to use if your hair has patchy baldness, I had patches that were significantly shorter than the rest of the hair but not bald , anyway its worth a try along with the Jamaican black castor oil, dermstore carries it for $30 ,but a 10% discount is available if you sign up and put it in your favorites, hope that helps.

  38.

I just started using the Jamaican Black Castor oil for about a week now. I hope this will work. I am so devastated at how bad my edges have become. I can’t leave my hair out or do any ponytails. I hope that this will with. This is my last hope after countless hair creams and even Rogaine.

  39. If the pictures are of the same person I need to go to specsavers.. Look at the ear shape, and shape of head.. No way… If incorrect repost a picture like the first one.

    1. the head looks different because its another angle and the hairline is now better and not receding. the ears are definitely the same, there’s a certain dent/curve thing going on that’s prevalent in both even though the pictures are once again, in different angles.

  41. What about coconut oil? Would it work as well as castor oil? I’d much preffer to smell like coconut.

      1. so sorry for the late reply, but I used normal castor oil from my local pharmacy,as they don’t sell Jamacain castor oil where I live, use it twice a day on your temples, every day!

  42. Hi everybody,

It was great reading this success story, I had the same problem, damaged hairline due to relaxers, weaves and braids. I took out my braids about 2 months ago and I had no hair on the sides,I was so devastated, I stopped wearing tight weaves and braiding my hair. I have been applying normal castor oil everyday twice a day , the results have been great!

You will really need to be patient as you will start seeing small results after a month, this stuff really works ladies, my hair hasn’t fully grown back yet,but its growing.
For those ladies who want to hide their bald spots while the hair is growing back , use clip extensions instead of sew ins, this is a really good alternative!

  43. Great progress! A lot of people have had great results using JBCO. Unfortunately, I am allergic to Castor Oil. When applied to my scalp, it’s like Nair!! My hair comes right off :(. I’ve tried every oil mixture that you can think of, and haven’t had much growth. But, I am not giving up though.

  44. Hello there, I discovered your site by means of Google whilst looking for a related matter, your web site got here up, it appears to be like great. I have bookmarked to favourites|added to my bookmarks.

  45. THIS IS NOT TRUE THATS NOT EVEN THE SAME PERSON THE EARS ARE ENTIRELY TWO DIFFERENT PPL PUT UP SOME REAL TRUE SUCCESS STORIES THANKS CAUSE I AM ONE WHO IS SUFFERING FROM THE SAME FORM OF HAIR LOSS AND NEED TO FIND HONESTLY SOLUTIONS

    1. I was thinking the same, but I didnt want to make fake accusation… You can definetly see that the ears are totally different in the second picture…

  46. This is a hoax it’s not the same lady. The ears and face are different in each photograph this is not cool at all.

    1. OMG! I just spent ALOT of time reading these posts (read even the very LONGGGGGGG ones) and then read the one about the pics being FAKE.

The ladies’ (face and EARS!) in the before and after pics ARE different. And hense the reason for the cut off faces.

      WOW!

  47. I was searching for something to help me with my hair problem. My hair has fallen out really bad. I was wearing a braid, not hum,an hair but down the middle braided in with my own hair. I left it in for three weeks, oiled only the edges and sides of my hair and when I took it out it had ate my hair up! It took all of my hair out where the braid was. Now that portion is growing back in its natural state. The rest, the edges and the front, are in a permed state.

I want to say I have so much good information from you on what to do about my hair that I guess I was supposed to find this site. You are a blessing to me! I thought I was a healthy eater.
Your knowledge on eating properly, and especially taking care of the hair will get my hair back to growing in a decent length. Right now, it is half perm along the edges and sides and in a natural state down the middle where the braid took the hair out. I do feel that I need to get a mild relaxer to enable myself to comb through the new growth. Then I will start utilizing your methods to attain my lost long hair length.

  48. I truly think that what I have is necrotica milaris which is a form of follitis. I am interested in hearing about your moms diagnosis and progress. Can u share whst dermatolgist in this area helped her with diagnosis? Thanks

  49. @empericalazuli. I am interested to find out how your mom’s scalp condition was treated. I have suffered of extreme itching, soreness anow near baldness in the crown of my head and I often get pimples and bumps in the same area. Did the oil help and did hair start to grow for youd mom? Would be interested to know your regime with her because my issues sound similar. I am in the Chlt area as well. Please let me know. Thanks. Be Blessed.

  50. Now that I actually do have some hair to put it on, my hair absolutely loves CASTOR OIL. I’ve decided to go w/ the Palma Christi brand. Not saying I’ll never use the Jamaican Black Castor Oil again, I did some research (not extensive) and learned Palma Christi is COLD PRESSED, and UNREFINED. I also learned how amazing Castor Oils healing properties are externally and internally. So I guess I didnt need any hair after all to even begin using it. I was afraid it would clog my follicles. We learn new things everyday and seems thats not the case for every oil. I was wondering why JBCO was black, and costs more and Palma Christi is much lighter in color, but u get much much more in bottle size for less. I usually compare cost per oz, but apparently didnt think to do it at that moment. I’ve have to go there 2day to get Seabuckthorn Berry Oil 4 my Mother’s’scalp so I’ll compare then. So I mix Now Solutions Shea Butter and the Castor Oil together which makes it creamy, then add essential oils concoction 2 it. I’m anxious to see what I can 2 for my Mother’s hair. She has been mostly bald all of ours lives and wore wigs. She is temporarily in a Rehab/Nursing facility as result of a stroke. Every evening, I massage Castor Oil, essential oil concoction 2 her scalp and she goes to sleep w/ a plastic cap on. Her scalp just sucks it up like u wouldnt believe. She also has a blackhead in her scalp which i read is Necrotica Miliaris. I got her Doctor to look at it and he said it’s exactly what your daughter told u. He said she can get it cut out, or better yet leave it alone. Since its clogged w/ oil etc and likely has Human Demodex in her scalp, beginning 2day, I’m going to put Now Solutions Tea Tree Oil and some Seabuckthorn Berry Oil on that scalp first. It may even dissolve that blackhead. We gotta get all that infection out her scalp first so her hair can start growing. For a whole year and 3 months, one side of her body was totally paralyzed, but last week she started moving her fingers, lifting that arm, leg, and twittling her toes! I told her looks like u gonna walk again so get ready 4 some booty shakin and swinging some hair honey 🙂 It’s so hard sometimes being the only one left out of 3 siblings, but there’s no secret to what God can do! He’s always on the move and makes miracles happen b4 ur eyes when u least expect it. Keep praying people and never, ever, ever give up…no matter how hard it may seem. Just keep going!!!!!

  51. Well…that day has FINALLY come! Off goes the wig and in to work I go. Was quite tough at first but boy do I look beautiful now! After 13 yrs. of fake hair..glued in weaves, wigs, sew-ins, gas, tips, tolls, trains and buses to unfamiliar places. Even countless x’s in the chair of a famous herself, Celebrity Hairstylist in Manhattan (Ellin Lavar-they had that show “Hair Trauma” on WE Network and I was in both seasons. I had hair Fedexed from LA. You can reuse that hair 4 a LOOOOONG TIME 2! Lavar Hair Designs was the first salon in my life that had it growin and crazy healthy and Im 38 y/o. When I could afford it, I maintained, and when I couldnt I stopped. But no matter what, they understood and welcomed u back w/ open arms. And yes one time the owner herself had her Secretary rebook a well known high profile celebrity so she could fix my big Brillo Pad afro disaster under that weave (in ur own private booth w/ door closed of course) For broke me 🙂 They weren’t all so concerned about how long you havent been in, their concern was ur hair arrived this a.m. and imma fix it up. And beautiful it was! They do bizness. They will even answer and/or return ur call while they’re at photo shoots, or on movie sets. They do bizness. U can even show ANY picture from a magazine and believe me it will come out EXACTLY like that. And, it didn’t look fake not even a little bit. My point being, all that $ over the years just trying to make it look real, just tryna get it right. So having lastly experienced the best few yrs back in NY, being her 8 mos. I saw a guy’s work here in Charlotte, NC. He was supposed 2 b the bomb. I knew I was tired of the wig, I hesitantly considered a sew-in. Really didn’t want nothing on my head since it gets hot often here but I thought give it a shot since a sew-in should make it grow. He was gonna charge $200, I’m thinking more than I wanna pay right now, but I have paid $500 in NY only b/c it was THAT GOOD. After a conversation w/ him I decided not to. He didn’t seem 2 professional, n’kept tellin me how his clients wear 14-18″ weaves, etc. I’m like oh no..this brotha is not the stylist 4 me, also I’m not “the girls here.” I am an individual. I ended up liking a short relaxed haircut on this lady I found at Salon Central by accident. A place where itz like 50 separate private studios (some had blinds down n’ doors closed) She is a Healthy Hairstylist and hers was one of the Deluxe private studios. Also good that nobody from my job might pass by n’see what was under my wig b 4 i got it done. When I called to book my appointment I warned her that I call my situation a Brillo Pad afro. She was like “you’ll b w/ me for a hour and a half, I dont overbook my clients, it will just be u and me.” I was so glad 2 know that too. Cause this other salon I popped into (just 2 see) it was a guy gluing a clients weave in and like 5 clients siitin around that client in chairs surrounding so close like arms length. I was like dang n’ bounced w/ no further questions. So I hadnt had a perm in over 3 yrs and even though I really didnt want to get one, and was doing so much 2 care 4 my hair at home, it LOOKED like a full afro TO ME w/ a decent length. I also knew that if I got a relaxer I would get 2 see for myself how it was after being permed in comparison to 1999 b4 I started this fake hair thing. In advance she told me the total would b $101 for a relaxer, black rinse, n’ short haircut. Wow how prices went up for getting your regular hair done! I told her I wanted black rinse cause I’ve always liked how it made my hair look much fuller. She said “yes, black does reflect light. She seemed to voluntarily educated me throughout about different PH of hair and everything. I asked her if Henna color was healthier than Black rinse. She said the only thing about Henna is it dries out the hair so much. Before anything she carefully examined my hair n’ scalp. She said my hair is more “fine” in the top but not so much in other areas. I was like aw man, it sure looked dense 2 me at home. I think she was letting me know in a nice way I would notice some thin after it got relaxed. She used Mizani relaxer etc on me, she said it’s pricey but she loves how it’s such a mild relaxer. So the style is cut like singer Monica’s back in the day when she first came out. I like the idea of it I’ll say until I saw the top of it in the mirror. Not draw dropping but, I thought it would b thicker than that in the top. Then it dawned on me. Even though I was dilligently treating it at home, I not only had the weight of the wig on it but back in Nov 11 I let a chick put a FLY ass quick weave it it at her house. It was sooooo dope I tipped her $35! She was licensed in Ohio but not here yet. I remembered how she put the blow dryer 2 it after she glued each track in. Saying girl my weaves stay in a long time. Yeah i bet they do cause when I tried to take it out w/ regular glue remover, glue remover oil, glue remover shampoo too, it was like nothing would get to come out mostly in the the top. I tried so gently but had had 2 pull w/ more force. Ended up having to cut globs of glue out. Worse quick weave EVER! So there we go. Had 2 b 2 work in a few hrs and I was thinking how will they react. When I left the salon I felt a lil free at first, a little bit. At wrk got a FEW nice comments from ppl that really like me, but u could tell there was some inaudible downplayed shock. I grew uncomfortable and kept havin to go to the bathroom to look in the mirror too. It was the thinness in top.I volunteered to some that I was tired of living a lie, being a victim 2 a multi billion weave industry, that my hair has never been that thin, but this is what fake hair can do after all those years..its like a car sitting on grass in the same spot 4 many many years. They became more supportive. I even got the “I thought “the other” wuz ur real hair. I said no, I didnt wanna wear my own hair cause it was damaged. I know SOME were lying bout thinkin “the other” being my real hair cause when those wigs get old u can tell they’re raggedy on the ends. And quick weaves b lifting in the back too so I can easily tell. Although my new style was curled and w/ the black rinse u could still see some thinness.I lived with it n’ couldnt wait to clock out. Thank God it was only a 4hr shift that day. l was already dealing with it personally after all those years. I know we shouldn’t worry what other think but, I’m human. She told me only apply heat 1x wk. I wrapped it that night, but the next morning I didnt know what 2 do. When I tried 2 style it, the curls were mostly gone cause the thinness.I got the big curling iron and the curls wouldnt hold up. Then the back was another story cause the curler was 2 big 4 the back. I had 2 go to work so I just slicked it w/ some Jam and tried to make good of the top, kinda finger pumped it into SOMETHIN. Funny reactions again. Had 2 live w/ this now for an 8 hr shift this time. Got off work n’ went 2 beauty supply store to get some small sponge rollers. I was so in distress and must admit I found myself circling the weaves on the mannequins. They all looked so beautiful! When I caught myself I thought “this weave is an addiction..get those rollers and get outta here! Went home urgently rinsed the Jam out, co-washed, rinsed then sat under dryer. Rolled it up. Next morning it wuz aiight but not pretty. Ended up making a part on side, slicked it all straight back w/ my small head w/ some Jam then went on to work. This day nobody said nothin AT ALL. Good cause I didnt wanna talk about! Another day of feelin sooooo ugly. I was like I hope nobody see’s me that I know. And if the guy I mess w/ runs into me (I been avoiding him like crazy) I will wanna crawl in a hole n’ just die. I left work driving w/ no music on, it wuz so weird that a voice called my real name “Felicia, do ur hair! I think it was my deceased sister. When we were teenagers we would hook our natural hair UP as well as our very close friends. Rocked a different style EVERYDAY. We’d always relax, dye, deep condition, set our own. We had the hood dryers, blow dryers, our crib
was the BEAUTY SHOP! We only went to a barber to just get edge ups and/or clip our ends. That was 25 yrs ago we started that. So after I heard that voice I went to Sally’s this time. It all started coming back 2 me! I bought a tiny curling iron 2 curl the 2 short rows in the back of my hair, some setting lotion, and picked up some Parnevu Oil Replenisher. I remember using that Parnevu 13 yrs ago and It worked some miracle on my natural permed full head of healthy hair. I washed it, set it, sit under the dryer. Hot curled it w/ the 2 different sized curling irons and OMG ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! It looks like it did in 1998 AND BEFORE!!! I just cryed n’ cryed and am crying RIGHT NOW. I wish I wasnt off 4 2 days! Cant wait to go to work. Parnevu made it so BEAUTIFUL and SO MUCH FULLER. It even seem like I have a different hair texture or something. I think the Essential Oils, concoctions had 2 do with that cause remember in the previous posts how my hair all dried out n’just died in a week to like a 1/2 inch after I used that Organics Scalp Scrub stuff and it was after that that I started doin the onion/garlic juices, tea tree oil on my scalp n’ stuff. Everytime I go out the house and feel the air blow on my hair Im like oh shoot I’m leaving out the door and 4got to put my wig on. BEAUTIFUL AND FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks A Million 4 takin the time and listen with love.

  52. Jeez made me cry! I feel you totally going thru similar trials just wanted to say be blessed, stay blessed.

  53. I liked up to you will obtain carried out right here. The comic strip is attractive, your authored subject matter stylish. however, you command get got an edginess over that you would like be handing over the following. ill without a doubt come further formerly again as exactly the same just about a lot frequently within case you shield this increase.

  54. Yes I am very interested to find out what product you used on your mum;s hair, because I have the same problem.

  55. @Jan,

If I read it correctly, I personally wouldn’t add Seabuckthorn Berry Oil to Conditioner then steam it into my hair. Reason being, I would want the conditioner on my hair ONLY, not let it get into my scalp. After I rinse out the conditioner, then I would separately steam the Berry oil into my scalp. This is only based on what I’ve learned. Research has it that after shampooing and/or conditioning we must rinse each out VERY WELL so the shampoo nor conditioner stays on or scalp nor in our follicles. I only let nourishing stuff STAY on my scalp. I am soo happy to help and always willing to share anything I’ve learned.

    1. I had major surgery and my hair began to thin and shed maybe 4 months afterwards. prior to that I had not relaxed my hair since October because it was still healthy and full. as of today it has stopped shedding considerably, but its thinner since my relaxer in May 2012. I think this may be the result of a fresh relaxer, so will this method help my hair as well?? I am very interested in getting my hair thick and strong, length is only a perk.
please let me know your thoughts….

      1. Hello,

I believe u had a post for me 2 share my thoughts on. If so, I do apologize 4 the delay as I haven’t been on here in a while. I saw it tonight a lil while ago as well as the arrow. I began wondering if that highlighted arrow maybe that it was 4 me to reply to. I’ve read ur post and do remember what it says. Plz let me know if I should share any thoughts 4 u. If so, just a heads up that I may suggest some strong stinky stuff that I believe will get u results IF that’s ok, or if u must I can figure up something else good thatz not so stinky 🙂

  56. @Jan,

I too itched like crazy after reading about Human Demodex! What I found to give best/quickest results is to start with the scalp. First, by disinfecting follicles n’ scalp of any yeast, bacteria, dead skin cells, and/or buildup from previously used toxic hair products that suffocate ur scalp from being clogged up. To disinfect I wet my hair then add couple drops of Now Solutions Tea Tree Oil to my SLS Free Shampoo, Gently massage it in good then let it sit for 5-10 mins. Then rinse. U will feel it tingle 🙂 I wash my hair weekly. My cocoction was Nutiva Coconut Oil (as the carrier oil), drops of Rosemary, Clary Sage, and Cedarwood Essential Oils. I added a dropper full of Seabuckthorn Berry Oil to my concoction. Sometimes I go all around my edges w/ just the Seabuckthorn Berry Oil dropper. I have Jamaican Black Castor Oil too but I personally dont massage it into my scalp b/c it is thick. I am trying to use up the rest occasionally as a hot oil treatment. I am gonna wait until my HAIR is in a much healthier state before I buy another bottle. We cant afford any risk of clogging up. Then I will use it on my hair only. Organic Coconut Oil I will massage, as well as steam into my hair n’ scalp. It dosent just sit on the hair. It is VERY nourishing to the scalp AND penetrates our hair shaft..steamed in or not. Yeah, you can add the Berry oil to your conditioner if you want. But I’ve gotten noticable results leaving mine in. Also, I dont really want to be rinsing away this expensive stuff down the drain. Unexpectedly, in the mirror the other day I was like “No way, I dont see what I think I see!..and this quick? The edges are really coming in, the thickness too. The new growth is darker. All around it feels much fuller. So my hard work is paying off.

  57. Thank you for the information about Human Demodex parasites which lives and feeds off human hair follicles. I’m experiencing thinning hair and receding hairline after wearing lace wigs so I’m in the process of treating my hair with Jamaican Black Castor oil which I’ve been using now for about two months. This is a slow process as I can only see a small amount of baby hair – I am being patient. Since reading your report on this I’ve been reading up on this myself and I’m more than convinced that these things are the results of thinning hair. My scalp used to itch but since reading about these parasites my scalp seems to be itching even more so I will be ordering some of this Seabuckthorn berry oil. You said you will be adding this to your concoction but it wasn’t clear whether you will be adding this to a conditioner that you wash out after or whether you will be adding it to your hair and leave in. I like the idea of adding it to my conditioner to steam my hair then wash out. Thanks – very interesting research – I too don’t want to be wearing a wig forever.

  58. My hard work is definitely paying off. In this short time I cant believe I’m seeing such thickness, dark new growth, and length! Even my nails r so hard they feel like acrylic on them. Steaming my hair w/ my Coconut Oil/Essential oil concoction is really working! I do that nightly as often as possible. After steaming I rub some Organic Vegetable Glycerine in b 4 I put my scarf on. When I wake up my hair is soft n’ moisturized. I dont use shower cap anymore b/c the Glycerine draws moisture to my hair/scalp from shower. Since the follicles r open I do a quick scalp massage b4 I get out the shower then let air dry. After I get dressed, put my stocking cap on, throw the wig on and Im off 2 work. This dosent take as much time as u may think. No excuses, make some time. I refuse 2 b dependent addicted 2 Mr. Chang’s fake hair forever 🙂

  59. This may blow ur mind, so ladies please brace urself as this is gross, BUT TRUE! In 2009, Scientists discovered a parasite that lives in and feeds off hair follicles. It is called Human Demodex. Seabuckthorn Berry Oil is the only thing that will kill them. Dont believe it? Reasearch it 4 urself. I just remembered I had a some left in a bottle I bought a couple years ago. Mine is by Balenceuticals. I decided 2 add some to my concoction. Hope this helps u too!

  60. And Btw, if u have a juicer, u can put that to use too for amazing hair growth results. It works n’I am living proof! How I first learned all this stuff few yrs back. Although, I successfully sued n’got my job back too :), I was recently laid off at the time. Since I’m a person that prefers 2 shop Walmart at night, I noticed I was starting to get a night glare or something when driving. I panicked b/c then, I no longer had health insurance. I went online n’researched “natural remedies for night glare.” The result was to juice carrots. I took a lil bit out of my next few unemployment checks saving to buy a Juicer. After I got the Jack Lalanne, I had a feelin carrot juice alone couldnt taste so great alone. I picked up some sweet fruits just in case. While glad I did, I made the juice mostly carrots and had just 1 glass each day for 1 wk. Online said too much pure carrot juice can turn ur skin yellow. You’d never believe the night glare disappeared and to this day years later my eyes are still back normal again. In the back of my mind I was also thinking how much I was tired of traveling over an hour every other week to N.J.to this chick that did tha bomb quick weave, a short style, but w/ hair glue:( For 3 yrs. ppl REALLY thought it was my hair. I was livin a lie cause I didnt always correct ppl, even black ppl like me, when they said ur hair is so beautiful..u got good hair. That’s how skilled she was. But when I always took it out b4 next salon visit I was so unhappy w/ my edges. Even though I saturated it w/ bond remover n’oil, when I took it out didnt like the health of my hair overall. Even tho she’d clip my ends, and deep condition, I still didnt like the health of my hair. It was also itchy and I didnt want 2 get another glue weave. The edges balding, length stayed the same it just didnt seem 2 b growin underneath at all. I THOUGHT maybe it was something I could do. I wanted 2 stop havin to get a weave to feel pretty.I went to local beauty supply store and bought something that said “Organic” Root Stimulator Scalp Follicle Scrub.” I used it exactly as directed, careful 2 only apply, NOT SCRUB scalp w/ the mini toothbrush it came with. Washed it, etc as directed. Deep donditioned n’did an oil treatment after. Each day after there was nothing I could put in my hair to help it as it was sooooooooo dry! Everyday, there was blotches n’ blotches of my hair comin out. All on the floor all in the bed. Couldnt even gently brush it cause thatz all it would take to brush a whole area OUT. Within 1 week, I went from bout 6 in to 1/2 in of hair! It all just dried out n’just died within 1 week! I ran out to go buy a wig. I began frantically researching what could’ve happened 2 my hair. Turns out that certain product manufacturers r able to put 1/2 drop of somethin organic in their product among harsh chemicals and LEGALLY they r able to list “Organic” on their label. And yes, ppl do believe it’s really organic too. I continued to research and discovered among many other things I had to repair my damaged scalp follicles. I hardly had any hair, but I did still have my Juicer. As result of research, I started juicing fresh garlic, juicing onions. It was stinky so I stayed in the house all day with onion n’garlic juice on my hair w/ a plastic cap. I even juiced fruits n’veggies specifically for hair growth daily. I even added a lil garlic n’ onion juice 2 my fruit juices too. Juicing was my 3 meals/day and I sipped water between. Around that time I learned of the Megafood vitamin too. I felt full each time and craved NOTHING ELSE. I received all my nutrients from fruits, veggies, peanuts, and 1 multivitamin (at the time).I had so much energy, I got up @ 5am (w/o alarm clock) each day ready to take on the world. Had 2 comfortable bowel movements everyday (the way were supposed 2 when healthy) and believe it or not..WITH NO ODOR! Didnt even have 2 wear deodorant. No more pimples. Yes, juicing all kinds of fruits n’ veggies will rid your body of toxins which cause odor in sweat etc. I even juiced collard greens, n’ cabbage too. The enzymes were so powerful, u felt energy in minutes after having a glass. No longer had the urge to smoke. Just stopped cold turkey. LOST PLENTY WEIGHT TOO!..in a healthy way. Also from research, I learned to blend Essential Oils w/ the most beneficial carrier oils. With Tea tree oil I unclogged, disinfected, made sure my scalp didnt have any yeast buildup or fungus too. Kept it clean. By the end of the 1st week of massaging am, then pm with the Essential Oil concoction, the hair falling out totally stopped. I also learned black ppl should wash their hair at least 1x week. You just have to put the oil back in. Added a high quality Tea Tree Oil (Now Solutions) to my weekly shampoo. I did calm down on the juicing cause I read juice shouldn’t be your only meals. Although its very healthy, u dont want to make ur colon lazy. I started making chicken in Nutiva Coconut Oil, steaming broccoli, etc. I didnt see immediate hair growth at first, but kept at it daily anyway. By the end of month 2, I saw an afro coming on. Although I stopped juicing as much, I ate plenty of raw fruits n’ veggies, as well as some cooked chicken. I’d. make me a lil juice to have WITH MY MEALS. Had to leave some room to make sure I get some water in my system too. After that my afro got lil bigger each month. 8 months later I measured 6 inches of my hair back. No chemicals, perms nor harsh chemicals. Although I still wore my wig, my edges grew in totally n’thick again. I kept eating healthy etc. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere my hair starting growing like crazy, I got to just bout 7 inches. I was considering what style I wanted, I had all this hair now. Then I met a guy, that went bad. A slight slack in my routine. Then my brother passed, my sister was already gone. Things became to much to bear. I consumed my mind thinking “I’m the baby, I’m the only sibling left now, what am I gonna do? Slacked my routine even more. Then my Grandmother passed. A week after my Grandma’s’funeral, mother had a bad stroke. Then I slacked off all together and just keep throwin the wig on with hardly any maintenance. With the power of prayer and the power God, I’ve now jumped back in with both feet. Now IF I ever even question “what am I gonna do” my answer is JUST KEEP GOING! I’ve been thru it all..now only the strong survive! As Les Brown says “Dont go thru it, GROW thru it! Sorry so long.Blessings 2 U ALL and may God guide every one of you every step of the way in this journey.

  61. I’ve done extensive research in this area and I can’t stress enough that regrowth of hair first begins with a healthier diet. I take a MegaFood multivitamin DAILY w/ a MegaFood Balanced B-Complex DAILY. I dont take Biotin b/c im getting enough between the above 2 vitamins alone. So why waste $?, as B-vitamins are water soluble n’ ur body will rid itself of what it dosent need. They r all organic fruits n’ veggies n’ as the bottle states they’re so gentle u can take on an empty stomach. Although I do prefer them immed after breakfast or lunch 4 the combined energy. I’ve also dilligently researched the tolerable upper intake of EACH N’ EVERY vitamin listed on each bottle. With that, I also take others i.e their Complex-C, Magnesium, E w/ Selenium, ONLY FROM THE MEGAFOOD brand. I get mine from the health food store. My focus is not only general health but also desperately 2 regrow my neglected damaged hair and no more being dependent of this ugly wig. Our body uses the nutrients it needs, then the extra goes 2 our hair. After my morning coffee w/ cream n’ honey, I sip water all day, as I drink AT LEAST 33.9 ozs of water/day. Our body needs water not only 2 hydrate, but also carry toxins from our body which do affect our hair growth. The nutrients from eating healthier has caused me 2 no longer crave junk. Just dont have the taste 4 it. Still havent touched those Klondikes n’ chips. Forgot about them n’they’ve been there for a good minute now. I do avoid eating anything out of a can, which is loaded with harmful preservatives, n’ carcinogens 4 shelf life n’ profit. I eat 3 healthy meals/day. My bkfst varies between Kashi Go Lean Crisp w/ Blue Diamond Vanilla Almond milk(get it on sale 2 for $3), a Banana, Chobani Yogurt, and/or 1/2 crunchy peanut butter sandwich. I only use 12 grain bread. Sometimes add sliced Stawberries (when on sale) 2 my cereal and/or Yogurt. Lunch may be Salmon salad w/ Romaine n’ Ranch Dressing, fresh garlic, red onions, sprinkled w/ Dulse flakes (this is a Sea Vegetable-our bodies and 4 hair growth do need some sea veggies 4 the iodine, but not too much). Or, I may have a Tomato Sandwich add a layer of Romaine w/ Miracle Whip. As a snack I may eat a whole Cucumber (skin on) sprinkled w/ Himalaya Sea Salt. I eat baby carrots too. Or for a snack I may eat a whole Tomato or 2 bolied Egglands Best eggs. Dinner may be fish or Chicken (cooked in Nutiva Coconut Oil (safest to hold high heat n’wont turn into harmful chemicals). No ur food wont taste like Coconut. I make myself hairshakes too. I bought a portable blender cup from health food store, which has a whisk ball in it. I mix Almond milk, a banana, Nutiva Protein Hi-fiber powder, Nutiva White Chia Seeds, n’ Nutiva Hempseeds-Yummy! (No, dosen’t have THC 🙂 While my hair benefits too from all of the above, I steam my hair weekly to open the follicles. Then immediately I gently exfoliate scalp 2 remove dead skin cells. I add Tea Tree oil to my shampoo (shampoo w/ no SLS nor their relatives) Wash n’massage good only once w/ warm water. Rinse very well. Then deep conditon w/ plastic cap under my Salon Dryer. Bought it on sale at Sally’s 8 yrs ago but only used it here n’ there 🙁 Do not massage conditioner into scalp, gently comb thru hair only. Then rinse very well. Steam scalp once more. While scalp pores still open I gently massage in a concoction I made. Its Nutiva Coconut Oil (which penetrates our hair shaft), Emu oil (also a DHT Blocker), lil bit Seabuckthorn Seed Oil, w/ few drops of Clary Sage, Rosemary, Cedarwood essential oils. I ran out of the Lavender, Ylang Ylang. Let hair air dry. You will feel scalp tingling ALL DAY EVERYDAY FOR DAYS! I also moisturize my hair every morning. Moisture means water. After that I rub some Now Solutions food grade Vegetable Glycerin. Its a humectant that attracts moisture to ur hair from it’s environment. I use it immediately after shower too while skin still wet. I only towel dry personal area, feet n’underarms. Goes on just lil greasy at first but it air dries in minutes n’the greasy goes away. I will never buy lotion again! Now Solutions Vegetable Glycerin lasts for months n’it’s only $8.99. Drink water when using this organic glycerine b/c it pulls water from wherever moisture is..on your body too. I also take Epsom Salt baths too. The Magnesium pulls toxins from our bloodstream. Our hair is sooo easy 2 damage and requires alot of work to get it back. Thick oils mainly clog the follicles, n’ only coat the hair. I also have a very smooth NON COTTON sheet set that I love which has not soaked up the oil I put in my hair. Just remember consistency is key.I do put stuff on twitter sometimes for anyone lookin for ideas. My twitter is EmpericaLazuli My only intent is to help, I do not have any hidden agenda to get followers. Hope this helps and best wishes to all!!!

Just remember consistency is key n’ Hope this helps and best wishes to all!!!

  66. can you send me your mother’s regimen?I suffer from the same problem and I am at odds. The dermatolist said it was traction alopecia and prescribed men’s rogaine which took out the healthy hair that was already on my head. I am all natural. My hair came out from wearing wigs. I have tried almost everything. I went from rogaine to using essential oils. I ordered some castor oil(home health) brand, and some emu oil. Can you tell me how often I am supposed to wash my hair, which protein conditioner to use? Which moisturizer to use? And anything else you recommend.

  68. Its such as you read my mind! You seem to know so much approximately this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I think that you simply could do with some percent to drive the message home a bit, however instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.

  69. Nice commentary. last thirty times I uncovered this online internet internet site and desired to permit you be conscious that i’ve been gratified, heading by way of your site’s posts. I should undoubtedly be signing just as as a whole lot since the RSS feed and may wait around for yet another post. Cheers, Glen

  70. Pictures uploaded – the top one taken 3 months after I’ve been treating my hair – not much difference unless its a lengthy process.

  71. Very interesting blog about your mom’s hairline. My harline started going thin so I started wearing lace front wigs to give my hair a break and to see if it would grow bak. Biggest mistake as the lace wig involved tape and glue which actually made it worse. I’m almost bald at the front so having to wear either a wig or lace front but with tape only rather than glue. I’ve been trying a number of things but I can’t see any improvement. As one person have said maybe the hair follicles are dead. I’ve tried lots of things so will try the JBCO – I did hear about it but not tried it as yet. I was trying to upload some pics so you could see my problem but having difficulty doing so.

  72. saw this on 20Nov11 and started my process on 21Nov11 in the night!! hopefully i cud produce some positive before and after pics here!! thanks for the info and well i am keeping my finger crossed.!!!!!!!!!!!!

  73. I was recently diagnosed with scarring alopecia. I thought that it was traction alopecia which can be treated. Scarring alopecia cannot because the hair follicles are destroyed. I am now being treated so that it does not spread.

  74. Pls, what did your mum do to her hair while using this jamaican oil.
I have been trying to grow my edges for 3yrs and av done it all. Well, av got the oil now and am applyin it every night. Only thing is i dont know what to do with my hair in the mean time. I know caps, bandanas etc are bad.
AT the moment, i just wear a wig everyday

  75. hey, im not african american but, today i told my mom to buy me some of the jamacan castor oil. bECUASE I STARTED getting traction alopecia when i was only in 10th grade when i started doing my own hair. I noticed that in 2007 January my left temple was thinnning? the hairs where dissappearing and they were baby hairs , and then over the years it has recieded to the hair line behind it and its really now getting difficult and i can see the beginning of my temple. Both sides of my hair were exact and now the side is started to shift inwards. I notcied the iffernce becuase when i started doing my own hair this problem develope and still is, when my mother was doing it my hair wasnt receeding , nor did ihave any problems . Im now 19 and well i have wavey hair , and i tried alot of haircuts and well, i noticed since the beginning of 2011 when i flattened my hair it began to be sort of? dead like, it was flat and extremely smooth even without use of conditioner. I mean within one day with out conditioner my hair was like dead and by night already oiled. Day 2 is like i havent washed my hair in 5 days or something. Anyway my hair is thinning out and i can totally see it and becomes embarassing. I mean my hair was always thin but i alawyas had so much. But now this issue has gone on long enough. I just really want to know would the jbco work on my hair ? or no? if so what really would? I am really desperate and honeslty my last solution is to shave my head at this point so i cant do the tight poinytail or halo things or constaly using heat in my hair.. Im on the edge of my rope someone help..

  76. Just fabulous I am sure your mother is extremely Appreciative.
You are a very loving, caring daughter. Thanks for Sharing that
    with US!.

  77. My mother has almost identical damage to her edges and scalp. I am in the process of developing a regimen for her and didn’t even consider JBCO. Thanks for this post, I am going to share this with her because she has been feeling a bit insecure about her hair lately. She is on her ‘last’ stint with a weave and has been considering backing out of the big chop. This will be a great encouragement for her.

  78. I know this may sound crazy, but what is moisturizing and sealing of the hair. How is that achieved?

  79. Really enjoyed reading this guest post and most of the comments I tried to go through, too.
I, too, am trying to protect my edges. The temple areas of my hairline have always been light but not as bad as the mum’s in the post. And now that my hair is locked I have been paying great attention and care to not have my hair retwisted too tightly. I have been Dr. Miracles’ Nape and Temple Balm for about 4 months now, sometimes twice a day and so far…Nothing. I am encouraged by this forum though to not give up and as long as I can find Jamaican Black Castor oil here in the organic/health care stores, I will definitely try it. But, I was trying to see if there was a specific brand mentioned by Gabrielle but she does not say.

    Thanks.

  80. My Mom had a similar problem, when she stopped relaxing her hair her edges grew back in. A key thing to note, I am Jamaican and have used Jamaican black castor oil for most of my childhood (my great grandmother made it from scratch back then). This oil can cause scalp itch if you have sensitive skin. I find that mixing it with other carrier oils and even a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil tend to keep the itch at bay.

    Happy Growing

  81. I tried castor oil but not jbco. I plan to get a little bottle and see how it works. I got traction alopecia from too tight braids, but not on my edges. My hair was see thru right on top of my head! I massaged vitamin e oil twice a week while wearing box braids I did myself. And low and behold my hair thickened back in 3 months. It took me 2 years to figure out what works for MY hair and scalp. You just have to be patient. Now I have to grow out the old thin hair and I’m back in business lol

  82. Yeah you can get the jamican black castor oil at http://www.sams247.com for it n this is the direct page with all of the oils listed with price.
    The 4oz is $5.29 and the 8oz is $9.99
Lavender Jamican Black castor oil 8oz is $11.29

  83. This is one of my favorite posts. It was both funny and inspiring! I especially love the Kronk and challenge accepted pics. Lol! It’s so amazing that it started by helping your mom re-grow her edges to her being natural. Congrats to your mom, as well as you! I have thin patches at my temples from wearing tight micro braids (it was my regular style during college until I wore my hair naturally my last year). Although I see some of my hair filling in from regular castor oil, I think I’m going to try the Jamaican black castor oil, especially if I see those results in 5 months!

  84. I’m also trying to grow back a couple of thin patches in the front of my hairline. This was one of the main reasons I decided to cut off my locs because of the too tight maintenance and styles. When I saw that one loc in the front was literally hanging on by a few strands of hair, it further reinforced my decision to cut them off. I’ve been massaging castor and essential oils in my scalp for the last 3 weeks and I’m already seeing a difference.

  85. This is awesome! Which JBCO did you use? The regular or the one with coconut and jojoba oils added?

  86. Great job! Of honarable mention for assisting hair growth- Bee Mine Hair Growth Serum with Sulfur. I have a bad habit of twisting the hair around my edges (right side only) sometimes (nerves I think). Anyhow that’s what thins my edges out. That serum is awesome though. I will incorporate the castor oil to massage my scalp.

    1. I used to do that a lot when I was younger. Same side and everything. My scalp has only recently completely forgiven me.

  87. Ok loved the story and how the outcome was outstanding ….. but at times we have women who are at home hairdressers and cause hairloss to themselves and others … Ladies if you think about all the times doing your hair or letting someone else just because you liked the way it looked …. Using GLUE …. Is THE SURE WAY LOTS OF OUR BLACK WOMEN HAVE LOST THEIR EDGES OR HAD SOME REACTION TO THE GLUE …. I AM A LICENSED COSMETOLOGIST AND HAVE DEALT WITH WOMEN WHO CONTINUE TO CAUSE THEIR OWN DAMAGE .

  88. amen…i’ve been using a mixture of castor oil and raw avocado oil to fill in my edges and I saw new hairs sprouting in a week….I use avocado oil to grow in my eyebrows and I see new hairs where there’s no hair in a week also if I apply it everyday…I don’t know how but the evidence does not lie. I think avocado oil is even better than castor oil for making hair grow…

      1. http://www.gardenofwisdom.com/catalog/item/3987807/3777612.htm
        I guess the correct term is unrefined…They have a 8oz size too but it’s back-ordered right now…

I’ve also read that you can find it in the oil section at health food stores. I’ve not had a chance to check but I’d try there first. Just make sure the oil is sort of dark green.

You can also get refined avocado oil at Whole Foods. It’s a golden color like Jojoba Oil and works well too. I’ve used both for hair growth but unrefined avocado oil (which is dark green) is like no other.

    1. I just thinking about doing this very thing this morning for my eyebrows. I will definitely add in some avocado oil. Thanks for the tip!

      1. It’s so amazing! I literally focus on putting the avocado oil where I want the hair to grow so it can be a certain shape and it grows in closely to it. I just tweeze any hair that is not part of the shape I’m aiming for every couple of weeks!

  89. Is there any real proof that castor oil (any type) helps the hair to grow? I’m thinking that it could just be changing the hair care practices (i.e. no tension on hair line, moisturizing, sealing, protein, washing, etc…). Just the scalp stimulation alone from washing more frequently could be the reason for the growth and then the other methods are the reason for the retention.

    1. Castor oil is one of the most powerful healing oils on the planet. Growing and thickening the hair is only one of the benefit of using castor oil. It is also an anti-inflammatory, a very powerful laxative, known to break up fat deposits in the abdomen, anti-aging when used as a facial moisturizer, chelator..the list goes on and on. Always make sure you buy the organic, cold-pressed castor oil. Castor oil was one of the remedies most often given by the famed psychic and healer Edgar Cayce in his health readings.

    2. I lost my edges twice because of too-tight braiding and all I did to grow them back was LEAVE THEM ALONE. I didn’t use or buy any special oils, products, etc. I washed, conditioned, moisturized, etc. along with the rest of my hair, but beyond that I did not touch them. In my opinion, nappy edges were a great deal less unsightly than NO edges.

Oils in general are great, but they will not grow hair by themselves. Otherwise more of us would have long hair. Right? Much more focus needs to be on hair care practices…the products focus is just another example of people wanting quick and easy…

    3. Tee – I am seriously looking for some evidence about castor oil because I am asked this question all the time, but so far no luck.

However you are definitely spot on about scalp stimulation. I have seen studies where hair regrows in the case of alopecia is stimulated by

      1. plain massage with no products
      2. massage with water
      3. onion and garlic juice

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that castor oil may help but a small tiny massage every so often may just do the trick.

  90. Awesome story!! Mothers can be hard headed when it comes to taking advice from their daughters so I know that the author’s hair is fierce! I love the part where she says that her mom looked and said “I want that!” Beautiful!

  91. Great story, and fantastic work and results! Your mom is so fortunate to have had you around to motivate her. You both will always treasure that, for sure. My mom has very thin hair (bald in some spots) from a lifetime of relaxers. She told me about castor oil, but she’s a bit challenged in the area of consistency. I wish I could be with her to make sure she sticks to a growth regimen.

  92. It’s so funny to me that a lot of people were saying this story wasn’t true on facebook yet not one person has said anything here. sociology theories at play,, it’s quite fascinating. Oh I do believe the story !

    1. I think many of the readers here has seen what black hair can accomplish with a little knowhow and some TLC. If people can grow type 4 hair to waist length in 3+ years, why can’t we regrow some edges?!

  93. LOL, awesome story.

I liked the way your approached the situation, you didn’t pressure your mom to go natural. You just helped her out and she ended up making the decision to go natural in the end!

+1 for the natural team!!! LOL

  94. That is a wonderful story. I know your mom is glad to have you. And in 5 months time…AWESOME!!!!

  95. I thank you for this, and congrats on doing such a wonderful job helping your mother restore her beautiful hair, and hoo and ray that she’s gone natural! I was wondering about JBCO and how it’s different from regular white CO; is one really ‘better’ than the other?

    1. The biggest difference i have found between the 2 is that the JBCO is thicker and has a stronger smell than regular castor oil. Other than that, i really dont know.

  96. LOL @ the Kronk gif!
But anyways I love this. Very inspirational. I might have to do the same for my sister since her edges are in a similar state atm….

  97. my hair has thinned in the same places as your moms. not completely to the hair line but just behind it. this is the reason I decided to go natural. I started growing it last September 2010 and cut it in March so now its about 4 inches long although those spots never came back in. I think it was traction alopecia from pulling my hair into a pony tail. As on now I cant wear my hair in two strand twists just as protective styles because its so bad, but im happy because I no longer have to worry about it getting any worse. plus i can cover it up with the rest of my hair. you live and you learn. this has taught me to never relax my kids hair.

  98. I’m glad that you were able to grow out your mother’s edges, and (somewhat lol) convince her to go natural. However, I tried the JBCO route, and to be honest, it didn’t really do anything different for my hair that regual CO did. So I left the overly-expensive JBCO alone, and just decided to stick with regular, white CO.

Do you think I was doing something wrong, because I’m also trying to grow out my edges.

      1. I added peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus oil to the JBCO because of all the videos/blogs that rave about those essential oils being prominent to hair growth. Needless to say, nothing changed. My edges didn’t disappear out, but my edges didn’t grow, either.

Looking back on it, more than likely it was all of the essential oils that probably stunt the growth.

Now I’m simply using Now Solutions Castor Oil to moisturize my scalp with nothing else added.

        1. @Nesha, I doubt the essential oils would stunt your hair growth. Hair grows from the inside out. My guess is that maybe your edges are just a little more fragile than the rest of your hair. You don’t mention what caused the thinning in the first place but if it is weaves or relaxers, it could be they are just taking longer to bounce back.

I don’t think you should give up, keep massaging with the Castor Oil. Maintain a healthy diet and make sure you are getting enough protein, hair is made up of keratin-a protein. You might also try taking a regular multivitamin, that helped me when my edges thinned as a result of repeated braiding with extensions. If you decide to try an essential oil, rosemary E.O. is said to promote hair growth, it also keeps dandruff at bay. But it should not be used during pregnancy

          1. Well it’s strange. I don’t really know what caused the thinning of edges. If I were to think back, I believe it was back in 2005 when I bleach my hair blonde and got microbraids. I still massage my hair with castor oil, just not everyday. But after seeing Strawberriculs results that will obviously have to change.

After reading so many naturalists rave about biotin, I’ve decided to take them along with prenatal vitamins. Hopefully I see some positive results by the end of this year.

      1. D: I think you ethier follow my personal or my beauty blog on tumblah!
        Babstheartist.tumblr.com
        orrrr
        Mochafleur.tumblr.com

whichever, your post had me cracking up. I read it in the most comical way.

  99. No shade or anything but, wouldn’t the hair just grow back no matter what once the unhealthy practices (tight weaves) stop?

    1. It depends on whether the hair follicles have been killed off. In those instances, the hair won’t grow back (you may have other options such as a hair transplant, but we don’t want to get to that point anyway). My understanding is that sometimes the traction causes an auto-immune response/inflammation in the hair follicles which results in sluggish growth.

The thing with traction alopecia is that it can be very gradual. Basically, I have thin edges, not to the extent as shown in the pictures, but enough to trouble me. Last year, I had braided extensions in my hair. I loved them. However, I left them in too long. When I took the extensions out, I had noticeable thin patches on the sides of my hair. I took myself to a trichologist quick time! Thankfully, the damage was not permanent. However, my regrowth is slow. It has taken me about 8 months to see the BEGINNING of growth, not full regrowth, whereas other people get good results rapidly. So further to the obvious message of not putting constant traction on your hair, patience is the key.

      1. Thanks for the info, good to know 🙂
This is even more of a reason why I hesitate to go for a fab Solange type weave :/

      2. What did you do to help regrow yours?

I also have thin edges from years of frequent weaves and braids. I’ve stopped getting any extensions done almost a year ago, I no longer brush my edges, and I now use a satin bonnet instead of a scarf, but I’ve seen just a little length, but not much thickness. I accepted months ago that I may always have thin edges and I was fine with it, but after reading this post and comments, I don’t know…maybe I’m getting a little faith again 🙂

        1. I too had a case of the fried edges.

I used to perm my hair, wash it out, then go and get a Jamaican blow on out top of it! Oh AND I wore my hair in a ponytail because I was a waitress. After a good year of doing this, I moved to DC, to live closer to my sister. One day we were talking while I was doing my hair and as soon as I pulled my hair back, her eyes sunk into her face. I looked in the mirror and someone done did stoldid m’edges! HOW DID I MISS THAT!?!?!?!
          Twas bad indeed.

I have never heard of Jamaican Oil – so I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to oils. What I think those oils do is change our behavior, so in a sense, it does work well. Ladies talk about how they massage the oil into their scalp every night (massage stimulates the hair follicles) and do not pull back their hair(also kind to hair), drink more water, stop using heat. (you get the drift)

Hey – whatever makes us more of a friend to our follicles… I will not knock it.

Now when I 2 strand my hair, my edges go past my chin and up my opposite cheek. It may take 5 months, 8 months or a year. If you are not permanently damaged (you may need to see a dermatologist) – have faith and be kind to your hair.

          She will forgive you 🙂

  100. also I love my occasional weave and in the past with the wrong folks doing it suffered some light lose (no where near what the writer mother did at all) I don’t get why folks keep getting them or any style that is taking out their hair to that point BUT I’m glad to see it can be reversed.

  101. Wow is all that I’m going to say just no more chemicals or weaves for her edges. This looks as bad as Naomi Campbell, whoever her hairstylists were throughout her life that kept doing her hair n taking her money should be ashamed of themselves. They do look alot better and with time hopefully they will continue to thrive.

      1. I agree. I have seen were a stylist would put weave in a lady head time after time and she had to know the lady had gotten a fungus from the weave, but yet and still put it in her head just to get paid. I am a hairstylist and my main concern is always the person hair well being.
