As your hair has gone from straight to curly/coily, has your style changed along with it? Or has it stayed the same? If it has changed, what was your style before and what is it now? If it hasn’t changed, why did you decide to keep your look? Please share! And feel free to post pics 🙂

My style has always been a blend of classical-hipster-vintage chic, and the choice to go natural just sort of fell in line with both my dress sense and my desire to improve the health of mind and body before I graduated from Uni. I’m literally 7 days away from graduation and I feel like aside from some bad days (Keebler Grasshoppers and M&Ms anyone?) I’ve been healthier, and happier with my now 7 months transitioning hair! I can’t wait to cut off my stringy straight ends, and I’ll be so happy in 12 months when everything I see on the outside matches what inside.
I think if you can spend that much time on your hair, you should spare some more time on the rest of your body, in regard to how you dress it. so it’s no surprise most people’s style has changed. As for me, it’s still pretty much the same. however I tend to wear more make up depending on the hairstyle im wearing. I think it just completes the whole look
I don’t know if my style has changed in itself, but I feel like its easier to wear the fun funky things I’ve always wanted to pull off. Its actually been harder to look bad in anything-even a randomly put together crazy outfit from a store, which is great fun : D
YES INDEED! I feel like I can be the more bohemian, funky version of myself. Not that I couldn’t before, but now it just feels right. Tried my normal conservative look and it didn’t quite fit. Being expressive through my hair and clothing works the best.
It’s amazing how a hair decision/style can switch up your whole style 🙂

I feel like with the change from relaxer to natural that my sytle has become more bold. The transformation has been so liberating and my style is reflecting a funky but classy look.
OMG I was just thinking about that when I saw this picture of Solange. I’m still in college but since cutting my relaxer out & coming here, I’ve learning so much about myself. I’m more comfortable with wearing what most wouldn’t dare attempt to pull off. I honestly don’t care what people think of my “style” as long as I feel and look good in it, it’s all right with me. Just recently one of my friends said I look liked I jumped out of an “In Living Color episode” …I just laughed along with them & kept it moving. In hs I use to change my style with the trends but now I’m more laid back when I want to. Don’t get me wrong I love to dress & doll up but for the most part crop tops & shorts are always a win for me, especially in this summer heat.

I feel like a rockstar, my man says I have so much “centric” swag LOL
I’ve become much more of a ‘minimalist’ and dress a bit more feminine than before. I don’t wear clothing with a lot of pattern, messaging, and neon or pastel in color.I love earth and jewel tones, cinched waists, knee length skirts, low cut tops, and lace. I would say my style is a combination of Iman’s and the ads you see from the fashion house Chloe. I also like to keep my make up simple. When I dress up I love a smoky eye, and usually wear a lip gloss to match (not too fond of lipstick.
Nope. I think I’m precisely the same as I was before. For me, being natural simply means I no longer relax my hair.
I’d like to say that I’ve improved my eating habits and am more physically active but, sadly, that’s not the case.
Yeah, I begrudgingly went more girly when I big chopped. Dangling earrings, soft colors, etc. I used to dress more androgynous and liked mixing boyish looks with feminine stuff. Now I’m pretty femme all the time.
nope still jeans and tees
Yes my style has changed but fashion has also changed as well.
I have always liked things that are simple but that can be dressed up (or down) easily. My fashion motto is “Simplicity is the best expression of elegance,” and when given the chance I tend to dress accordingly. That said, I also love salwar kameez and other clothing from India; have done so ever since I met my science teacher’s wife in high school. She was draped in a sari, and I have been hooked ever since. I like my materials soft and flowing. My ideal garment is cut perfectly to my upper body, skims my hips, and flows around and away from my thighs and legs, down to the floor. I like to emphasize my bust and waist by the way my clothes are cut rather than by exposing them. My preferences are for one or two colors at a time, or for simple patterned prints; no gynormous flowers or paisleys all over the place.
My hair used to be mostly worn pulled back in a low-slung puff when it was texturized; now, I mostly have it in plaits or twists. I especially like the twists, even though they keep unraveling on me, so that I don’t dare try to keep them in for more than two weeks at a time :-). I think they go well with my personal style, and now that I’m also losing weight, I hope to someday have the ideal confluence of the hair I like, the healthy body I long for, and the style I most enjoy.
Well said…. I too love simplicity. I feel no need to have a lot of dramatic make-up or tons of accessory pieces. Just enough to make a maxi dress pop is fine with me. I like to buy classic styles that can last forever. I still have dresses from high school that I wear comfortably and they are still stylist. For me I find that all the make-up and accessories take away from the natural beauty of my face.
My style has definitely changed before i dressed more like everyone else in my community. There was nothing that distinguished me from them. I wore aero, simple tees and hoodies, and tight shirts. Now my style is a lot more funky. I love to choose the more loose fitting shirts, and for as long as I can remember i hated floral, but i have soooo many floral pieces as well as prints. I have also been inclined to buy a lot more skirts. My style has evolved greatly and I love it because it matches my transition to a natural and i no longer look like everyone else. 🙂
When I came to college, I stopped buying new clothes. All of my clothes are gifts, were traded to me, or from thrift stores.
My style has become more androgynous, but that’s because I finally feel comfortable to express my gender identity, not because I stopped putting chemicals on my scalp.
wow im not the only one? I stopped buying clothes in college too and the only new clothes i had was bought and given to me by my best friend because she wanted to see me in new clothes lol
I’m been trying to change my style ever since I taken my dredlocks out. I want to dress more hipster/urban with clothes that are feminine and fun-loving.
But you need money for that. :<
my style has definitely changed! i feel like it’s bolder and more fun, and since i’ve lost weight as well, i take more chances. this summer i am all about cutout sandals, tie-dye, tube dresses, and floral high-wasted skirts.
When I went natural I started to dress in a more feminine manner. I wore more jewelry and just took better care of myself. I guess I did it because I wanted a make-over and because I didn’t like my hair so short. Now my hair is longer and I still love to dress feminine.
OMG,MY STYLE HAS CHANGED SOOOO MUCH. I used to be ore into like Hollister and the “prep” look, now i like bold prints and colors and im painlessly addicted to thrifting! I have always been an old soul but im more CONFIDENT now to truly express my style outwardly. twitter: @teonnadenise

Yup. I’ve always had style. It just got better when accessorized with my lovely fro. Going natural upped my (already high) confidence so my style has gotten a smidge more daring.
Yep. I am much more sophisticated, edgier, relaxed, tribal pattern, a bit of everything but definitely enhanced my style.
I’ve always had ecletic/vintage/ “afro-centric” style and with my relaxed hair, I always knew something was missing but I couldn’t put my finger on it. As a natural, my hair completes and accentuates my style!!!
btw i’m stealing solange’s look!!
I agree with what someone else said, my hair finally caught up with my clothing style. I always loved peasant skirts, sun dresses, embroidered shirts, and handcrafted jewelry. Now my hair pulls everything together.
My style changed a lot! I like simplicity more than I used to and I love colors and patterns mixing and matching. I think during my permed years I was subconsciously trying too hard. I was drawn to darker edgier looks. I used to wear colored contacts, fake nails, face full of makeup. Now, I love the earthy look. I think now I’m a bit more modest in dress, but still experimental, and a lot less like other people I know both inside and out. I think overall I’ve changed and began covering-up a bit more. Now that I’m natural, I feel more conscious of how I represent other black women with what I display (whether I like it or not) — so I try to be tasteful and free at the same time. I never thought I’d be ‘that’ person…but what do ya know…I grew-up.

I definitely love the current look, you look more comfortable in your own skin and I love the glasses!
Love the glasses!
Thank you 🙂
My style has changed a little before I was just very casual, jeans and a nice hoodie. Now having my locs I feel that the outside finally matches the inside. I still love my jeans but I will put them on with a nice shirt with flats.
My style has always been (once I started shopping, and finding a style that defined me — pre-transition and BC) I loved looking simple, yet bohemian, earthy, hippie, vintage, grandpa and grandma chic, yes all those wrapped into one. I still love, as I’ve always have, those exact styles which form my own eclectic unique style. I think that my hair added to it. Because I do have short hair, 4″ stretched, and curls, it makes it look more fresh and youthful (even though I’m 17, very youthful). If I were to wear a ‘fro or blowout it’d give me a more retro edge; retro wouldn’t be my style, though vintage is. I would say, that my hair ties it all together, straight hair did too! 🙂
So to answer, no.
My style has not changed beyond any natural evolution that would have happened had I not changed my hair. There was nothing wrong with my personal style. I am of the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” school of thought. You could say that’s why I stopped relaxing my hair. I realized it wasn’t broken and stopped “fixing” it.
My style has definatly changed and my friends and family constantly remind me that 🙂
It was a change for the better, I didn’t really have a specific style/trend and kept on changing hairstyle every week because I was never satisfied. Right after my big chop, I started wearing more earrings and accessories in general. I also wore make up more often thought light and natural like. Now I have a more settled style, my parents being from Cameroun I naturally went back to my roots and now wear a mix of African prints and accessories along with my second heritage: French style. The most important is that I am happy and feel like I have my own identity in terms of style, I’m not going after such and such trend, just my own, what I like! I love afro hairstyles and it’s really nice to see women wear it in a wide variety of styles. It’s just a shame some of our sisters, and brothers, still don’t see how versatile naturals can be! keep it up 😉
Afroholic
Yeah but to a certain degree. My style is pretty much consistent I always loved the old Hollywood glam style. I finally figure my hair is catching up with my style now as well…lol. But I do experiment with my look now of wearing something bold (every since I saw Solange in that Boxing kitten dress) and play up my lips more
My hair style has changed styles I no longer do are; two strand twist (outs), wash N Gos (never liked them), and braid plaits.
Styles I do now are very classic; pin up updos, braid outs, afro puffs and vintage styles has become my signature style, there is something about the classy look that makes me feel beauitful.

Nope. My style has always been funky, slightly avant-garde the hair just adds to it…
before going natural i had long black hair and goth bangs. I wore mostly dark colors too. my friends would all say i looked like the ghost chick from The Ring. lol! now my natural hair is bright red and my style is more boho. now they say i look like a gypsy. i cannot win!
Yes, I would say my style has definetly changed. I used to be the type that would only want to wear jeans and a t-shirt but now I find myself interested in high fashion. I like to dress up more even when i’m not going anywhere. I also like to look into more vintage clothes. Going natural has helped me figure out who I am and my sense of style. Even though the ride isn’t easy, I still love being natural.
Not really. I believe my hair finally caught up with my style..My mother calls me a through back baby..I can most def say that somethimes I fel like I was born in the wrong decade..lol.
I have always loved fashion and music from the era when my parents were teenagers (50s and 60s) so my personal style hasn’t really changed. I am finding now that I am having to try to make my style fit in a professional way though.
I hear ya pinkgirlfluff. I have always liked the 50s, 60s look. Especially the dresses. I have a few of the a-line style dresses and also what I call the Jackie-O look in my closet but I find this look is expensive.
I think that my style has stayed the same but my hair compliments my style better now. It’s the icing on the awesome cake that is me! 🙂
Oh wait, I do wear more flashy lipsticks now. I don’t know if that has to do with my hair or not but I do love vibrant pinks, reds, and purples which I didn’t before.
I would definitely say yes my style has changed. Before I was middle of the road and pretty trendy. When I went natural I BC’d after only about 3 months of transitioning so I had very short hair and felt that it gave me a little edginess. I have found myself making more bold choices with my outfits without concern because I felt if I could rock an inch and a half of hair I could rock anything. I also always loved make-up but was not an avid wearer. With very little hair I saw this beautiful canvas in front of me and started to play around more with color and blending. Overall I’m happy with the changes because I feel I have finally found my personal style and have a truly unique look.
I co-sign to what Aisha felt. I feel like I’ve finally found my personal style. I just need some money. Lol. Before I was afraid to make a bold statement, but after I BC’ed I found a new confidence. I didn’t transition, I chopped 7 weeks after my last relaxer. The confidence to rock my short ‘do gave me the confidence to truly be me in my style choices as well. I’m no longer afraid, nor do I want to conform and look like everyone else.
I would say yes. I find less and less reasons to wear makeup and go bolder with colors. I also have to say vintage has been my favorite style of clothing but I was always afraid of going there in fear of looking to costume-y. Now I think I have fun dressing up in that style. There’s something very classic about my hair because it is natural so I take it there from head to toe!
