Harriet Tubman is most popularly known as an abolitionist who made several missions to free slaves from plantations. But she also the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the Civil war, and an effective Union scout and spy. In a phrase, the sister was BAD. Now Tubman will be the first woman in a century and a half to grace American paper currency. From the New York Times;
“The Treasury Department will announce on Wednesday afternoon that Harriet Tubman, an African-American who ferried thousands of slaves to freedom, will replace the slaveholding Andrew Jackson on the center of a new $20 note, according to a Treasury official, while newly popular Alexander Hamilton will remain on the face of the $10 bill.
Other depictions of women and civil rights leaders will also be part of new currency designs.
The new designs, from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, would be made public in 2020 in time for the centennial of woman’s suffrage and the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. None of the bills, including a new $5 note, would reach circulation until the next decade.”

Someone needs to write a part 2 to this article now that Tubman will only be on the front with Jackson on the back. I think people were in uproar that a black woman would be on one of the most common bills out there. I think to appease white men, Andrew will be on the back; white people want to see themselves on when they see the $20.
