In a recent interview, Orange Is The New Black star, Uzoamaka Nwanneka Aduba, spoke candidly about her struggle to accept the gap in her teeth during her childhood. Aduba recalls hating her gap and begging her mother to allow her to have braces. Her mother refused, citing the gap as a family trait recognizable in their village in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, that thing is a thing of beauty. her mother said.
Despite her mother’s attempts to instill a sense of pride in her gap, it took years for Aduba to appreciate her gap and recognize it’s splendor. Now, Aduba, is well-known for her signature smile and she loves it.
Now I can’t not smile in pictures…I feel like I have to make up for all these smiles I didn’t get to express when I was younger.
