Washington Woman Falsely Accuses Black Woman of Throwing Acid On Her Face Out of Jealousy

I received this interesting email from a reader this morning;

Hi Leila!

This doesn’t have much to do with hair, but I wanted to call your attention to this story.

A Vancouver, WA woman won the sympathies of America over claims that on August 30 a black woman walked up to her and threw acid on her face. Turns out she made the story up and had actually threw acid on her own face.

What may seem like a harmless description reinforces stereotypes. In this case the fictitious black woman walked up to the victim and said “Hey pretty girl. Want something to drink?” before throwing acid on her face. This description insinuates that the black woman was for whatever reason maybe jealous of this white woman’s beauty? I may be going too far with that assumption, but it’s worth discussing.

Click HERE for a story on black women’s reactions to the attack accusations.

The 28-year-old ‘victim’, Bethany Storro, received worldwide support after the alleged attack and even booked a spot on the Oprah Winfrey show (that spot has now been canceled).

What are your thoughts? Does this play to the old stereotype of black women being jealous of white women?

  1. Yes, It does play to stereotypes to answer your question. If you go back in history, our ancestors were racially profiled and the victims of false allegations. They were not to be trusted because our skin color was different. This country was built on racism so racism can’t go away that fast. This country was built on lies, construction, manslaughter and bigots. Yes, there has been great inventions but for a grown woman to humiliate another woman and bring false allegations on her in national tv is very low. That was disrespectful; all she said was,”Hi, pretty lady.” what’s wrong with compliments? I have been complimented before and I would never humiliate someone like that. Honestly, I can’t be jealous because jealousy is like a mad dog’s tooth. The envied wins the applause and as a 18 year old, I thought this was disrespectful of her to put her on blast and for Oprah, who grew up in those tough times, to interview her? Does she not get what this woman was trying to project?

  2. I TOTALLY agree with Nikki 100% when a black child for example gets raped or kidnapped or whatever the case you see it once or twice on the news. But don’t let it be a white child they show the story all damn day. It just shows that racism clearly still exists after all this time, and they wanna put black people under the bus, and to be viewed in the worse way. I’m beautiful black teen female and I never once wanted to be white or have envied them. Just last week I shaved all my hair off to go natural and embrace my god giving hair and to truly love myself inside and out. White people sit yall a**es down somewhere

    1. Amiya, I salute you! Tell ’em girl, black, beautiful and proud.
Yes, like she said sit ya’ll (flat) as* right down.

  3. I’d heard about this but I didn’t know she said the fake attacker said Hey pretty girl want a drink. It reminds me of when that woman drove her car into the lake to kill her two kids and then blamed it on a black man. These lunatics make up these bogus allegations because they think people will believe them. The news and media already makes us look like immoral scary people so of course some black person throwing acid on a person she didn’t know is just another drop in the bucket and it seems completely plausible.

Something like that happened in Chicago a couple of yrs ago a woman got thrown acid on her face by people she knew, and it didn’t get this much coverage, so I’m sure the race factor played a part. Ugh sometimes white people need to get over themselves, most people aren’t jealous of them and don’t want to be or look like them. Furthermore their race has done a lot of evil things too, we just don’t control the networks to put them on blast all day every day. Remember that black mentally disabled woman that some white men kidnapped raped, and made her eat feces? Yeah they’re so much more advanced than us right? If you ask me there are bad people in every race but the weak links in ours gets more airplay.

  4. I don’t understand why people will literally do ANYTHING for attention (and money) these days, why would you throw acid on your own face just to get attention? I do agree that she was obviously playing on black stereotypes to try and make her story seem more believable. I wonder how they found out she was lying.

  5. No, not really. I don’t think it plays into any stereotype. However, it says more about the fake victim than it does her fake attacker or black women. And strangely, her “attacker” is quite stunning in a nonconformist way. Maybe this is who the “victim” really wants to be?

Slightly off topic, but I guess race is relative. I wouldn’t describe the woman in the picture as black. She could be part black, but she looks racially ambiguous (sp?). The same goes for the victim. I would describe her as ethnic white, as in not Anglo or what I think of when someone says white person. It’s her facial features, not her skin color.

    1. I agree with you M…. I actually think that they both look Hispanic. ( I am Hispanic so hopefully no one takes this comment as an insult). I also agree that the attacker is stunning (both actually).

I am eladed that no one was falsely accused of this crime and pray that the “victim” gets help from herself!

  6. I’m a gorgeous black woman, and I have no reason to be jealous of the way another woman looks…whether white or black. I simply do not care about interracial relationships. If a black man prefers a white woman opposed to black women, then I’m not going to get worked up about it. My black husband loves me dearly & love him. So that’s good enough for me.

I read that the lady visited a plastic surgeon but could not afford to get any work done. This could all be a selfish scheme to get the attention of a plastic surgeon to do some (or a lot of) pro bono work.

And those scars do look like they were applied in the same way that you put on a mud mask. How incredibly stupid to intentionally go from being a beautiful swan to an ugly duckling…and to blame it on a black woman is even more appalling.

  7. Lol let’s say this idiot really is mentally unwell. So? Does anyone really think that a person could be in their right mind while raping, murdering, dehumanizing, humiliating and mutilating another person? Because that’s what the vast majority of white slave owners did to their black slaves for hundreds of years all over the world. Were those disgusting excuses for human beings not racist? Given: to be so cruel and psychopathic to a group of people bc of their skin color is quite mad. Also given: white slave owners were racist. Why is there any confusion about little miss Acid Face?

  8. I heard how the whites love Oprah and my uncle said when the whites say you are doing something right that means you are doing something wrong lol

its funny how people don’t see this story as race hate however its ok to label every black for a lie SHE IS NOT MENTALLY ILL she knew what she was trying to do if she said it was a white woman the story would not have got any coverage … I LIE?

Maybe someone can explain why most of Obama’s legislation gets no vote from the republicans = Racist Rats! … its because hes black they think no good can come from black people

Disclaimer: im not saying that every white is racist

  9. First off I am from the Uk and experiece racism if JC can’t seem racism that is just JC experience not mine and many other black brits.

I wish people would stop saying this woman is mentally ill she knew exactly what she was doing.

Looking at her face it looks like something was applied to her face instead of poured a chemical peel gone wrong. Some has even stated that she went to a plastic surgeon weeks earlier but was broke. Other reports said that the woman’s sister is married to a black man.

She was using her white priviledge fully to her advantage in many ways.

1)She said that her attacker was a BLACK WOMAN who she claimed said “HELLO PRETTY LADY DO YOU WANT A DRINK” then said the woman had a JEALOUS RAGE on her face.

By using those words she is bringing up all the messages that has been shoved down our throats for years about white women being the most beautiful and us black women being the lowest of the low. Not to mention of all these black women are so undateable news special and white women who are with black men who think that everyone black women is jealous of her. She knew she would get the sypathy and empathy she wanted and get all the donations to her plastic surgery and money woes.

I mean have you lot even looked at the comments online? Horrible look at this blog http://sugabelly.blogspot.com/2010/09/dear-bethany-storro.html

Everywhere it was the same thing “Black women are so jealous of white women” from white men and women, some other races sad to say some black men and few black women.

2)Now that she got caught she is using a insanity plea becasue she got divorced and of course the faux aplogies. Many people have suffered because from this fool’s lies but more people are concered for this poor woman that is white priviledge.

    What about these women?

A woman was afraid to leave her house becasue she was getting the evil eyes from people

Another woman refused to tie her hair back and wear shorts out of fear.

What about the woman in Arizona Derri Verlade who had acid thrown in her face 4 days after Bethany Storro lie. They called the attacker a copycat I see it as a retaliation.

  10. I immediately thought oh here we go again! The bitter black woman, with nothing more to do than be angry and hate everybody. Goodness it’s a stereotype so old. The whole being jealous of beauty did not occur to me until after but I can see how that would be a conclusion that makes sense, especially if the person who started the page is a white supremacist.I mean if the story really did happen it would be horrible. The fact that it was made up and a black woman was chosen as the perpetrator reveals assumptions our society has which are painful and angering.

  11. .”VV”

@afrika- aiych wasn’t endorsing bw-wm relationships. She was simply stating that black women have been demonized by society to the extent that ‘our’ own men no longer deem us dateable. I think the double standard that you mention actually lies in the fact that society projects the notion that its okay for bm to marry interacially, but not black women.
    ——————————————————————-

Agree with all in your post ‘W’, and would add that society especially supports bmale ir when/if the bm is wealthy; I would also say that imho, society is not so much ‘ok’ with bm marrying interracially, but suggests that ‘other’ nonblack women are so desireable, that bm can not resist or ‘help’ themselves. oyan

  12. I won’t make it a black white issue except for the fact that who would believe that someone who looks like her could possibly hurt her. I think she picked someone who is the exact opposite of who she is or better yet of who she wished she could be. We as black women face a lot of diffrent blocks in our road. But I as a black woman know without a doubt that women of colour (other than white) have natural beauty no matter how beautiful they are it is not on a level that they can achieve. Period. I say she is just crazy period. And she hates who she is and described someone the EXACT opposite of herself self mutilation ? Look up Munchausen syndrome she probably had some form of that and no one paid her any attention so now they had no choice….And she can live with her poor misconcieved self for life.

  13. Over on my blog, some people have decided you fight this issue, contacting the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Clark County Senior Deputy Prosecutor’s name is John Fairgrieve in Portland, Ore.Letting him know that this type of behavior is highly offensive to bw and there needs to be an apology and punishment for subjecting black women to criminal issues.

  14. I got the impression from the snippet I read that Bethany was an attention seeking oddball to do what she did and the implication seemed to indeed be that the black woman was jealous of her, it goes with the e-fit being almost bald. I feel that JC maybe did not know that this was within a community where black people are a minority and come under suspicion because the ‘victim’s’ plight went national and had the community rallying around her.

This story doesn’t reflect anything on white people or race relations. It sounds like one nasty, conniving individual who duped the nation for a while. She was going to be on Oprah after all.

  15. As a black person from Britain i have to say i’m a little embarresed by jc’s comments. Anyone would think that there’s no such thing as racism in these parts, there’s no such thing as racial profiling and no black man or woman has been wrongly accused of doing any white person wrong. Can you not see how this would bear on our communities? Did you ever hear of the nun in England who claimed she’d been raped, describing her attacker as a black man with locks. It turned out that she was trying to cover up a drink problem and had actually been out that weekend drinking in bars. This report reminded me of this situation and others i have heard about. Thank god we have some black people who have committed themselves to fighting some of the injustices and general discredit a lot of our people face in this modern day world.

  16. The situation perpetuates the stereotype that Black people are evil and devious. Sad that this continues to be true in 2010, and that even people like Oprah fell for it, rather than investigate the situation.

  17. @JC I got the idea it was an acne treatment gone wrong that she had daubed onto her face. the pattern of injury was consistent with this. There is no evidence of her throwing acid onto her face. There is also no medical diagnosis as far as I have read regarding her having a mental illness of any sort and as her parents stated she did not show any signs whatsoever of any mental illness prior to this acid burn incident.

It’s also disconcerting to see her mother apologising to “all the communities involved” but not directly saying the black/african american community. :/

  18. I think it’s funny because the stereotype is that we are jealous of white women when in fact I think they want to be like us. They tan their skin, inject their lips, hips, and butts, and adopt our culture whenever possible. And what kind of woman has those features naturally? Women of color. It sounds to me like you want to be like us just as much as we try to look like you (women with perms)

  19. For the anon commenter going as What? I am well aware of the deeply ingrained race issues in USA. I have never stopped saying and will never stop saying to everyone I meet that the only option (yes really the only option) is to always rise above.

As Mandela said in his book which I really think everyone should read…we should live our lives not ordinarily but rather with a vision of ideals. In an ideal world the mention of one albeit fictious black woman would not send an innocent woman to change her habits. In an ideal world, we would not take on the burden of an unrelated person. In an ideal world we would be individuals. My ideal world.

Frankly I am no spokesperson for UK. UK is diverse and there are many people with many varied experiences. Some people would greatly relate to you but others wouldn’t. I feel hugely privileged to have been brought up in Africa for most of my life (which most people in the UK were not). My perspectives come from the fact that I was raised never to feel inferior, because that comes with consent from self.

Finally are you seriously going to say to me that a sane person would actually throw acid onto their own face? Seriously? As her parents say, she has deep psychological issues…

  21. @JC- as a fellow Brit I can see that you are not aware of the fact that race relations are not the same in the UK as they are in other countries. i.e. America is essentially founded upon racism and inequality still prevails in the USA. In the UK however racism is much more discreet and people like to act as though things are equal when they are not. None of the articles that I read about Bethany mentioned that she had a mental illness.

Let me not digress. The fact that she claimed the attacker said ‘hey pretty lady’ definately (in my opinion) implies that the alleged attacker thought Bethany was beautiful and attacked her out of jealousy. Essentially Bethany was playing on racial stereotypes; society has shoved the idea that white women are more beautiful down our throats for centuries and many of us believe it. It’s unfair and ridiculous. Its also really sad that people are still empathising with Bethany even after finding out that she lied about the whole thing!

  22. I also believe that she was trying to do some kind of chemical peel. The substance was said to be applied, not splashed. If it was applied, I doubt she would’ve sat there while it burned her up as she was applying it. It was probably something that she put on her face, let sit for a while, and then it burned her. Also the burn marks are in a the shape of a mask with the most severe burns in areas that would’ve likely had heavy face-mask-substance application. I believe she is just vain, not mentally ill at all.

  23. Afrika: you have misread me entirely and bashed me because of it. What I am saying is that because of the media attention on BM/WF relationships (they way they have made it seem like some big phenomenon) and the way they push the idea of the “jealous” and “angry” black woman, it didn’t surprise me that this Storro chick would say that a jealous black woman did that to her. That’s what some people believe about us and that is likely to garner a reaction from the public.

and I said the sidelining of black women when it comes to the idea of BEAUTY, but you conveniently left off that part to make my statement something different. Nice.

I was trying to convey her point of view and what things may have made her think that way, as deranged as it is. So you need to chill out.

  24. I’m of the opinion that this ‘black women jealous of white beauty’ trope, is only in the minds of non-black individuals. We as black women are sort of touted to be the opposite of white women in terms of looks and femininity in general, and it seems that the idea of being opposite of whiteness automatically means black women are unattractive and therefore, we must be jealous. (harsh side-eye)

My main issue with this story is that people overuse the terms ‘mentally-ill’ and ‘ignorant’. These are just excuses. There are plenty of mentally ill and ignorant individuals who don’t do this shit. In fact, the last thing she is is ignorant… she knew enough to know that saying her attacker was black would be most believable. Her phantom attacker being jealous of her beauty was just the extra racist icing on the cake. Either way, you throw ‘it was a black guy/girl!’ in there, you will be believed. Thats the opposite of ignorant.

  25. Black people are 12% of the US population. Yet “anonymous assailants” are a significantly higher proportion. This isn’t the first case of blaming a black bogeyman/woman. How many black people are incarcerated or executed because they are black? This is injustice of the highest order. I hate it. My black sisters and brothers, what can we do to address this?

  26. I’m just glad they found out it was a lie BEFORE they “found” the suspect. There are barely any black people in Vancouver to begin with, so I can understand how some of the black women there would be a bit nervous about fitting the description of the supposed suspect. Police have arrested mand of ‘us’ that fit the description in the past, and I fear that it would have happened again in this situation.

The girl is mentally ill, I mean, she’d have to be to throw acid on her face, but I don’t think she should get a ‘pass’ b/c of that. She still needs to suffer the consquences of making a bogus claim.

  27. I knew something was off with her story from jump because there are hardly any Black ppl in Vancouver, WA and any Black person accused of a crime there would have been picked up with a quickness.

  28. Maybe it’s just me but when the story broke I sideeyed this chick. I’m TOTALLY NOT SURPRISED that it proved to be a hoax.
She garnered the sympathy of many b/c her “Before” pictures contradicts the look of her B.S. assailant. Black ppl are always the scapegoats of whites in terms of “angry black ravenous man” and “bitter black woman” There was less coverage on this being a hoax then it being exposed as a lie. We need to start a FB page of LEAVE BLACK FOLKS ALONE W/YOUR LIES/STEREOTYPES b/c this has BEEN utterly ridiculous since then to now. *Sigh*
From the Black man stole my car & killed my kids to this and all the lies in between I know GOD got a better plan for us b/c we stay getting used & abused by the media.

  29. “…the rise in black male-white female relationships and just the general sidelining of black women” – aiych

Here we go again. Scroll down a few pages to the post about how the writer’s natural journey made her appreciate black men. Read the comments. Most of the black women who left comments are in or in support of interracial relationships with non-black men.

Isn’t it funny how when a black man is in a relationship with a white woman, he is sidelining black women and he’s also suffering from “self hate”. When a black woman dates someone outside her race, she is applauded on natural blogs as if she is a war hero.

Why the double standard aiych? why? I am sick of people making such misguided statements. So only a black man can be a victim of self hate??? I don’t even have any more energy left for this topic. If constantly bashing black men makes you feel good about yourself then go ahead.

  30. Well, I don’t want to jump all over JC because she probably doesn’t know what happens here when a white person accuses a black person of a crime. Yes, we’ve had false accusations from our side, but they are treated with much more skepticism, and more importantly, white people who are accused of crimes don’t get profiled. Some very prominent cases in the U.S. in the past two decades resulted in the civil rights of many black men being violated. Charles and Mary Beth Stuart, where the husband shot his pregnant wife in the head and superficially wounded himself. He gave a generic description of a black assailant and black men in Boston were stopped and questioned without cause for MONTHS afterwards. The ONLY thing that put an end to it was the fact that Charles Stuart finally confessed to his brother, who finally told the police, at which point he committed suicide by jumping off the Tobin Bridge. When Susan Smith killed her children by pushing her car into a lake, she also gave a description of a black assailant, and again, black men were questioned. It took VERY little time for this latest hoaxer to get invited to the Oprah show. So it’s not all in our heads. When white people accuse us, all of the rules about due process and civil liberties go out the window and even an upstanding, clean cut, law-abiding citizen has to worry-and honestly, even if you aren’t so upstanding you still don’t deserve to have your rights violated. If I accuse a white man or woman of attacking me, you can bet your britches that the cops will not start searching every white person who fits my attacker’s description.
But truthfully, I’m a a bit surprised b/c it’s not as though you live in a racial uptopia. In fact, quite the opposite from what I read (and I do read the Guardian and bbc.com for example). Sometimes, allowing yourself to see the true reason for something is the first step in actually getting together with people to make a difference. Pretending that racism doesn’t affect yourself doesn’t make racism go away. And that’s not playing the victim, it’s just walking into a situation with your eyes open.

  31. This story bothers me for soooo many reasons but the ending does not surprise me. Susan Smith, the lady who claimed that she was kidnapped by black men when they found her in Disney land with her child a few years ago are just a few examples of blacks being the boogieman in the closet. Why would she throw acid in her face and then blame a black woman? Plain crazy. The crazier part to me was that the newscaster/commentator was feeling sympathy for her after the hoax was revealed. What would have happen if some innocent black woman was arrested for this hoax? Thank God it didn’t get that far.

  32. I think what is more sad is that she splashed it on her own face. Now, she has a messed up face. Kind of vain how she would blame it on someone else.

  33. MOST BLACK WOMEN THAT I KNOW ARE MARRIED TO BLACK MEN. SO WHY IS THERE ALL THIS TALK ABOUT INTERRACIAL. ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ARE MARRIED TO SOMEONE BLACK. I HAVE A BLACK FATHER, GRANDFATHER, UNCLES ETC.. AND THEY ARE ALL MARRIED TO BLACK WOMEN. SO WHY ARE THEIR STILL STEREOTYPES ABOUT BLACKS NOT MARRYING THEIR OWN RACE. ITS WRONG AND IGNORANT!

  34. IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST IGNORANT. WHO SAYS THAT BLACK WOMEN FEEL LESS THAN BEAUTIFUL COMPARED TO WHITE WOMEN? I DONT BELIEVE THAT AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS DONT FEEL THAT WAY EITHER. WHITE WOMEN TAN THEIR SKIN ALL THE TIME AND YET NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO AMERICA!

  35. @Jc…. Woooow. I don’t even know where to BEGIN with your misguided statement.

First off, you do not live in the United States. You do not live in Washington. One of the articles pointed out that THERE ARE FEW BLACK WOMEN in these areas. So the few there that match the bogus description WERE ALL SUSPECTS! Are you familiar at all with the United States police force? More often than not they arrest first and ask questions later — ESPECIALLY when it comes to blacks.

These women did not “victimize” themselves, they were put in the UNCOMFORTABLE and AWKWARD situation of having an entire community begin to look at them suspiciously, and they did what they could to protect themselves.

Also, I haven’t read anywhere that Bethany is mentally ill. If you read that, please post the link so that we all can see. If anything I read a report where police said that she IS NOT mentally ill and has an amazing amount of clarity.

What Bethany did was malicious and racist and represents the WORST of humanity. Your comment FLIPS the situation to make the black women in Washington seem as though THEY are the ones with a backwards racist mentality. I find that highly offensive.

Also, if you’re not familiar with the United States, Washington is a VERY white state with VERY low crime! The black people who move there are not hooligans and gang bangers. The Pacific North West (where Washington is located) is actually a very “mixed” state when it comes to blacks. I have family there and there aren’t many ‘black on black’ couples. Black men and women tend to intermarry. Which makes this situation all the more heinous.

Please don’t make comments all the way from the UK, critical comments at that, without understanding American geography and culture.

I’m not trying to be mean or anything, but I was just really, highly offended by the things you said and implied.

  36. Drea, I thought the same thing. I am unbelievably relieved that the attacker was not black and I do think that Storro should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

  37. The thing that fascinated me most about this story is the reaction of residents. One lady saying she avoided tying her hair back and wearing khaki shorts just in case she was mistaken for the ‘assailant’.

It is quite sad that we often don’t think as a community when we should and we often think as a group when we shouldn’t.

Why in the world should the handful of black residents in this community decide to label themselves as victims and yet they are totally blameless?

The lady is confirmed to be mentally ill so I for one refuse to condemn her actions. People who are mentally ill often do things that they would not do in a ‘normal’ (or atleast balanced) state. This includes saying and doing things that people know are taboo – abusive, aggression, racism, drugs, promiscuity.

In short the mind of someone who is mentally ill and unstable is not like the mind of a normal person.

The real story comes from the reaction of the public. We (speaking about the reaction of black people since this is what I have read) are the ones who are guilty of stereotyping….so badly that we even think of ourselves as criminals! Seriously how can the announcement of ‘black woman’ committed a crime make you change how you feel guilty so much so that you change your daily routine? That is so messed up!

The faster we get to the thinking mode that we are individuals and stop taking offence at the mention of race, the faster we will begin to form a better world for ourselves.

If you flipped the situation and a black woman said that a white woman wearing khakis poured bleach on her face, I really do not see white women as a group identifying themselves with this individual and not wearing khakis, ‘just incase’.

We are individuals let us stop identifying with the negative!

  38. Every time I hear about this hoax, it makes my blood boil because that is just a damn shame. First, because she lie about something so horrific and serious, then she has the nerve to blame someone regardless of race. It goes to show you that stereotypes are alive and well, especially black people as supposedly criminals and that black women are jealous, envious, or this that or the other. I mean please, can’t speak for any other black woman but I’ am sure as heck not jealous of white women’s beauty. Beauty can be found in every race. I hope the powers that be charge this chick…

  39. @Drea When a white person commits a crime it is an individual act. But when a Black person commits the same crime it is a condemnation of an entire Race.

  40. This kind of story turns on white people of the baby-boomer generation. I swear, they are programmed with a different “micro-chip” of some sorts than people born in later years. Even if the story were true, which it sounded ridiculous in the first place, why would this be a black-white issue and not a crazy person issue? I can not believe how much attention this lady is getting..it’s 2010…wow.

  41. I knew something was off when I saw the post-‘attack’ photos. The acid preferred by such attackers wouldn’t have left her with those superficial burns…and sunglasses wouldn’t have saved her.

    Effing lying trollop.

  42. This story most certainly feeds into the myth that masses of jealous Black women are roaming the streets harassing, threatening, and obsessing over white women and their “beauty”. I for one am sick of it. I am tired of seeing white women with Black men who cringe as I walk by and then the man pulls the woman closer as if I am even concerned about them. It is their BEHAVIOR not their race that caught my eye, child please! This false report hyped up ill informed white women, ignorant teens, obnoxious Black males, and racist old farts who wrote all types of foolishness on the internet in defense of this alleged “victim” attacking ALL Black women. Did any of you see these comments? I am sick of it. We are owed more than an apology.

  43. I think it plays on the stereotype that black people in general are criminals. When I read the article (b4 the truth came out) I was thinking, “Darn another black person breaking the law.” Anyway, I mad she lied.

  44. I don’t think that black women are jealous of white women’s beauty AT ALL. That idea never even entered my mind. Black women have no reason to be jealous….our beauty is just as diverse and bountiful.

    Anyway….beauty is subjective.

Oh, and P.S: This chick is crazy! When do white people stop being so gullible and abandon the assumption that a black person accused is the same as a black person, convicted perpetrator.

    Sheesh!

  45. I don’t think that black women are jealous of white women’s beauty AT ALL. That idea never even entered my mind. Black women have no reason to be jealous….our beauty is just as diverse and bountiful.

    Anyway….beauty is subjective.

  46. Bethany has been quoted as saying that she saw “jealous rage” in the black womans eyes as she threw the acid.
I knew she was not telling the truth when she said that.

  47. I don’t know if makes me think that a black woman was jealous of her looks but it just frustrates me that she chose to blame it on a black woman. It reminds me of when Susan Smith had claimed that it was a black man that had drowned her children. I think when they accuse someone of color they think it will be more convincing to the public, I guess? Just a thought.

  48. all I have to say is: Really Oprah? Smh, come on now. What would’ve been the reason she would’ve been on the show? WHY did she need to be on the show? What’s she trying to imply about this lying chick’s situation?

  49. Once I found out about the hoax, I immediately thought about the “black woman” thing, too. I’m glad I’m not the only one offended by her choice of assailant.

  50. It reminds me a lot of the story right before the 2008 Presidential Election when a white woman claimed that a black male attacker held her down while carving a “B” (for Barack) in her cheek with a knife. It quickly turned out to be a hoax, especially since the B turned out to be backwards (aka. she did it to herself in a mirror).

Sure its a story perpetuating a sterotype of black women being jealous, but the reality is that there are a lot of people that will go to crazy, deceitful lengths to ensure that blacks retain a criminalized image in the media. It’s very sad, but very true.

  51. When this story first broke and they showed the drawing and I assumed the “attacker” was white. I had no idea she was suppose to black or that anything was said to the “victim”. This is madness.

  52. I immediately went to that line of thought when I saw the initial story.

To be real, with the surge in “black women can’t get a man” stereotypes, the rise in black male-white female relationships and just the general sidelining of black women when it comes to ideas of beauty, it did not surprise me at all that she chose black women as her target. As if she was thinking “They’re jealous of white women and everyone knows it, everyone will believe me if I say I was attacked by a black woman who was jealous of my ‘beauty'”.

The comments on news websites are pretty interesting too. Anyway, I’m so sick of having white folks blame their own crimes on blacks and I’m sick of people falling for it. And I am aware of the black women who have done the false accusation things as well, there have been at least two that I know of. It’s equally frustrating.

  53. Say word? Okay… Nothing new tho…seems that adds a layer of urgency whenever white folks are victims to black inflicted crimes. But as usual the more priveleged race recognized their position and used it to further their own agenda. Not surprised at all. But this week in honor of the so called “jealousy” that my sisters apparently feel towards the Eurocentric beauty ideal.. I will rock my BIG ASS FRO all week. Real talk. Peace sistas…one day we will be free of the struggle….

  54. It’s ironic that when I saw the drawing of the ‘acid assailant’ I thought that she was quite attractive! It was only after that I saw the heading of the picture and the story that followed. I agree with the person who wrote in, it means something when someone who could think up this ploy would choose a black woman to be their ‘assailant’. I look forward to further comments.
