Introduce yourself!
My name is Daniela Mondlane and my name is Filippa Mondlane. We are half Swedish and half Mozambiquan. Daniela is a Fashion Marketing student and Filippa is a Music Industry and Media Business student in London. We also have a production company called “AfroTwins Productions” where we produce, direct and edit visuals including music videos, styling and photoshoots.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
Daniela:
My hair has always been natural. When we were kids we had braids and our mom never believed in relaxing our hair, and I have just continued being natural because it is so much easier and more convenient. You don’t have to spend a lot of time and money in a salon. I think everybody should find a hairstyle with their natural hair that they are most comfortable with that looks good. We shouldn’t have to change much. Do something fun and cool with the hair you were born with and you will be fine, hehehe. I have coloured my hair though. Either I wear my natural hair colour or I colour it a redish burgundy colour.
Filippa: My hair has also always been natural. When I was younger I had a lot of braids because it was easier for my parents to maintain. The only thing that is not natural about my hair is the colour. I am not a natural blond, my natural hair colour is dark brown.

How would you describe your texture?
Our hair is very thick and soft.

Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
Daniela:
The only thing I really do with my hair during the course of a month would be shave my sides two times. I don’t use any styling products actually. I use Aussie Shampoo and Conditioner for dry hair to wash and condition my hair, but that’s pretty much it. I don’t have a problem with dryness, but I like this shampoo and conditioner because it makes my hair softer.
Filippa: I also shave the sides of my hair twice a month. I wash my hair with Silver Shampoo and use a conditioner by John Frieda called Sheer Blonde, which removes the yellow colour from bleached hair.

What does wash day look like for you?
We are pretty low maintenance so we just wash our hair, condition it, let it air dry and go!

How do you combat shrinkage?
We don’t really have a shrinkage problem.

What are 2 do’s for your texture?
Daniela:
Use a good conditioner and let your hair air dry.
Filippa: You get really nice curls when you swim in the ocean because of the salt water, so definitely dip your hair in the ocean whenever you get the chance. Having a good conditioner helps too.

What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
Daniela:
Try to avoid any type of hairsprays. They always dry the living life out of the hair. And don’t over wash your hair. Twice a week is fine to get a little fluff to the fro hehehe.
Filippa: Use a hairbrush, rather than a comb to maintain the curls.

  1. I am from Maputo and I saw these girls many times, I am a big fan of their hair, they have the hair of my dreams, LOL. It Is Very beautiful. I love it.:)

    1. Haha! I’m also from Maputo and these girls are my brothers’ friends. So great to see that their natural beauty is being celebrated here. They might not know this, but they inspired me to also go natural. Rock on!

  2. Enjoyed their interview! They Made growing and taking care of hair simple and less stressful though they are lucky their hair complies to such simple regimen! In all, I just love the fact that they are really rocking and enjoying their hair. Which is what its supposed to be! Grow it and enjoy it!!! Style it the way you want! Afterall its hair and its yours!!! Cheers

  4. I loved this feature! These ladies were a breath of fresh air 🙂

One thing though–I don’t feel like Daniela and Filippa have short hair….it looks medium length, or even long in some photos. I feel like they were tagged as short just because they’re rocking their shrinkage…

  5. And i thought that MY routine was super simple!
Beautiful girls! Its nice to see them featured- i have seen their pics on Tumblr. Nice to put the face to the name….?? does that work in this case? LOL

  6. Ahh! I love how they have the simpliest regimen ever… I freaking wish I could. Also lovve that they colored and share the same haircut. Even twitter and instanames are similar, I wish I had a twin lol. They are so awesome

  7. OMGoodness but that first pic so reminded me of “Cat In The Hat’s” Thing 1 & Thing 2 LOL. No offense. They are adorable. Always wanted a sister 🙁

    1. yeah! I got that Cat in the Hat vibe too! but more like Gorgeous Thing 1 & Gorgeous Thing 2 with the matching fros! twins are awesome

    1. I was thinking the same thing. I’m often overwhelmed by all the work that goes into keeping these naturals “looking good”. If you ask me, curl definition is overrated if I have to spend 2 days to get there (pre-poo overnight, DC all day, etc). They look happy and I think it’s because they accept and enjoy their hair. Nothing more.
