Cuteness! Identical twins inspire each other to go natural **Updated with sad news**

Hello everyone.

It was recently confirmed to me that T’Neil, who is featured in the story below, passed away on July 20 after a weeklong battle with a sudden, unexpected illness. The day T’Neil died I noticed that BGLH had a huge jump in traffic — I soon realized it was from friends and family coming to see T’Neil in her element and show their final respects.

The story of T’Neil and D’Neil’s natural hair journey was particularly touching and, even though I don’t know them personally, I was devastated to learn that T’Neil died just a couple weeks after being featured here. I’m glad that BGLH was able to be a small part of her life before she left us.

Rest in peace, T’Neil. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

~Leila

ORIGINAL POST, JULY 6, 2010

I recently posted a story about best friends who went natural together. Here’s another cute story. 17-year-old Kentucky twins D’Neil and T’Neil inspired each other (and their mother!) to take the natural plunge.

D’Neil (right) and T’Neil

The twins, relaxed

Twins: We live in Lexington, KY where we are incoming seniors in high school. To pay for all the things we enjoy (shopping, partying, dining out etc.) we do eyebrow threading.

T’neil: I was the first to go natural, about two years ago the summer before our sophomore year. After pretty much having had every haircut and style in the book I needed to do something new and refreshing. I also wanted a style that no one else had.

I was overdue for a relaxer and my curly new growth caught my attention, so I cut the remaining relaxed ends off and the rest is history.

I think my decision to go natural had a lot to do with my sister’s desire to go natural. She was my #1 fan when I went through with it.

D’neil: I was fed up with having to constantly relax and do my hair. My money and time was being eaten up at the beauty salon and there was no diversity in getting perms for me anymore. I often found myself bored and displeased with my hair. With my sister being natural, I already had a taste of what the process would be like for me but I wasn’t really sure. Then my mom decided to go natural and cut her hair and that’s when I knew for sure that I wanted to go natural too.

The twin’s mother on the day she went natural

D’Neil’s new look

Twins: For the most part people were shocked as to why we would cut off all of our “pretty” long hair. Our friends and family loved it and supported us the whole way. Living in a fairly small town in Kentucky, natural hair is almost completely unheard of here. A lot of people weren’t used to it, so of course we have heard every joke in the book. But it’s grown on a lot of people and now guys can’t keep there hands off our hair.

Our best tip for transitioners is, “Don’t get caught up in what everyone else is going to think or say and embrace your natural beauty, because what you’re doing is normal, everyone else is assimilating to someone else’s idea of beauty. LOVE your hair.

  9. I never really knew T’neil and D’neil, but they were in my junior english class. I always thought they were absolutley beautiful, and I always saw them together. They were the sweetest people I had ever met, and extremely bright. When I came back for my senior year and saw her picture on peoples tags and shirts I just kept saying that’s not her until it said in the youth service center RIP T’neil. I was completely shocked, and it seemed so unfair. I wish I had gotten to know them better, but I only see D’neil in the hallways and it just seems so unnatural to see her without her twin. I imagine it’s hard on her because twins are usually always closer. I’m terribly sorry for your loss, and I wish the best for your whole family. She left a big impression on me, and everyone else.

  10. This story makes me cry and it’s so heartbreaking, it hits close to home for me. I’m an identical twin and we both went natural together in Jan 2010. I feel even closer to D’neil and T’neil (we’re right around the same age) I send my prayers to the grieving family. God Bless.

  11. Hello everyone. This is T’neil’s mom and I just want to express my appreciation for all the prayers, well wishes and words of encouragement you all have extended to us. I am comforted each time I receive a notification that a new post has been added. May God bless each of you according to your needs and His Will.

    1. may god bless & be with you also 🙂
T’neil will always be with you in spirit,, she is BEAUTIFUL.

  12. Hey ya!
I am having some hair problems, I am trying to go natural but my hair is so tripped out, I don’t know what to do….I have a natural curly wavy hair anyway, the kind that even perms can’t take the wave out, so I am going all natural, I am only half way there, but when I go to work, I try to wear the straight styles which require some flat irons, and here recently, my irons broke (oh-boy) and I have been just wearing it back in a pony tail, letting my hair rest, but it’s messing with my style, do you think I should get braid during this crucial moment?

  13. R.I.P T’Neil. T’neil along with D’Neil were both and still are very beatiful. As thier younger cousin I really look up to them.Seeing them with their natural hair was such an inspiration to love my own thick naturally curly locks no matter what people say. T’Neil was and still is sooo beautiful and will never be forgotten. Beauty all around like T’Neils and D’Neils is hard to find. So when you find it never forget it! R.est I.n P.aradise T’Neil…< Your little couzin:)
