Can't Win? Natural Hair Vloggers Face Backlash for Both Big Chopping and Relaxing

big chop natural hair relaxer long natural hair

As I scrolled through my YouTube subscriptions list recently, I stumbled upon two new videos that came as a surprise. Two of my favorite YouTubers and long-time naturals made a change.  Africanexport, who had at least mid-back length hair, big chopped. Simplyounique, who had disappeared from the YouTube world for a while, now had relaxed hair.

In case you missed it, here are the videos:

Of course, as an avid YouTube watcher and natural hair enthusiast, the videos were a surprise. These ladies were two of several channels I watched frequently, especially in the beginning of my hair journey. They both rocked their natural hair with confidence and shared tips that helped (and still helps) many ladies on their hair journey. But, after I watched the videos and I began to read some of the comments, my jaw dropped. Several people expressed disappointment, feeling betrayed, and questioned why these ladies made the change. There were speculations about the personal life issues involved with their decisions and even a little anger was expressed. Some viewers unsubscribed and I remember seeing one comment from someone who said they wanted to punch Simplyounique in the face for relaxing. sigh I can only hope that the writer of that aggressive comment wasn’t serious.

It is always a little shocking when I see a blogger/vlogger receive backlash for making changes to their hair, regimen, or lifestyle. On one hand, I understand that some of us as viewers feel connected to these individuals through their blogs/vlogs. We watch their hair journey, dream of reaching their length, or even think that they are our ‘friends in our head’. However, how invested should we be in how someone else chooses to wear their hair? I am all about natural hair and I currently choose to wear my hair long, but whom am I to judge or criticize someone who wishes to cut off all their hair or to relax their hair.  Each person’s hair journey is just that, THEIR hair journey. And, as much as, it would be awesome if every single person in the world went natural, each individual will ultimately choose to wear their hair in a way that suits them and their lifestyle. Some say ‘it’s just hair’, but it’s not just hair. Our hair is an expression of who we are, our personalities, our confidences, and our strengths. So why can’t each person choose to wear their hair in a way that reflects THEM? It also makes me wonder, what reactions would I get if I should relax or big chop tomorrow?

On a positive note, while there were many who expressed disapproval, there were also several comments of encouragement and support. I am still a supporter of their channels and I think both ladies still look beautiful, regardless of how they choose to wear their hair. In the general scheme of things, I think it is important for us to continue to support each other, whether we are relaxed or natural.  Don’t you agree?

What were your thoughts about these naturals’ decisions? Would you ever go back to relaxing? Would you big chop again?

  1. My thing is, don’t expect me to stick around when you decide to chop off your hair and start anew. I don’t have the time or patience to invest in another 2 years worth of videos. I subscribe to someone because I relate to them and they inspire me. When they decide to take a route that completely obliterates the point of their channel and reason I subscribed, I am deuces.

  2. It is everyones own decision what to do with their hair. Maybe it is disappointing for some ‘fans’ or ‘followers’ . However there is no reason to exaggerate over hair or insult/bully someone because of that. At the end of the day I am sorry to say that (although you said the opposite what hair is) it is just hair. Dead cells…and there are soo many beautiful ways to feel great . It is not your hair which defines your beauty….

  3. All that says to me is people are too loose when it comes to the internet. They feel they can say whatever the f***k they want. Black people need to get the hell over this hair obsession. LET IT GO.

  4. The backlash speaks volumes about our obsession with hair length, as opposed to our fascination with hair texture. I have never seen either of these ladies blogs or vlogs. I am only interested in natural hair, but I wouldn’t slam someone for relaxing their hair. If they were a friend or relative I would express my disapoinment without turning into a hair nazi. As for the lady who cut her hair, it looks wonderful. It suits her. We all have to remember that hair health and appreciation of our hair’s natural texture is more important to some than length.

  5. People can be mean and petty sometimes. If you really have an issue just watch videos that relate to you and the stage in your hair journey. Unfortunately, the anonymity that the internet affords seems to allow people to think that they are holier than everybody else and allow them to badmouth other people. Personally if you live in a glass house dont throw stones: I forget who said it in previous comments – these women have gone out of their way to share their lives with us, the least we can do is be grateful.

  6. I also love both of these vloggers and, just in case you haven’t seen her yet, Younnique has big chopped again and is now rocking her twa. I love it!!

  7. I am a big fan of both bloggers. Ironically Simplyounique just did another big chop….and guess what she is still beautiful.

  8. It just shows our obsession with long hair (African Export) and really feeling like these people owe us or are obligated to us because they make videos. It’s wack and borderline disgusting (for the girl who threatened the lady). Sadly this attitude is prominent offline too. My hair is almost to my waist and quite frankly sometimes I get the desire to cut back into a tapered cut. When I expressed my desire on cutting my hair, I received resistance. I know it wasn’t ill intentioned but still it’s my hair. It’s their hair. Feelings change. Circumstances change. People have to understand that their preferences have no bearings on others.

  9. I love African Export’s cut–her face is perfect and the new cut emphasizes that. I kind of had a feeling she would do it at some point, because in all her wig reviews, she always seemed more enthused about finding a good tapered fro, and I was always like “girl just cut it, bc these wigs will never be good enough.” I always got tthe feeling that she only let her hair out to do videos anyway. Never felt like she cared that much about length. Anyway, it’s not my hair so i’m not terribly invested. Don’t see why people care that much.

  10. I think it’s a tragedy that so many people model themselves after all of these regular girls that are called “bloggers”. It’s hilarious!

To say I’m upset, sad, etc, because of their choice is INSANITY! I could care LESS what any of these people do with their hair. The info on good products and hairstyles is all that I ever watch hair videos for. That’s all they should be used for…..not to try to BE these people.

Lord knows I’m gonna do what I want to do with my hair, so again, it’s sad that so many people have feelings of hurt or anger or even disgust for these ladies’ decisions.

Look to a real model….Jesus Christ!

  11. I watched Simplyounique’s video briefly on why she relaxed her hair. I say briefly because I didnt wish to watch the full video because I dont feel that she should have to explain to people why she made a decision with HER HAIR. So many people take this “natural hair movement” a little too far. To make the choice to wear your hair natural is just that, a CHOICE. I have gone back and forth from natural to relaxed since 2009 and I have received somewhat of a teasing backlash from family and friends for going back and forth but SO WHAT it was and still is my CHOICE. We live in a day and age where if you get to a point where you’re not able to grow your hair to a certain length then you can go to any beauty supply or website and buy you some. But did it occur to anyone that maybe these ladies may have gotten a little bored with the usual twist out, braid out, wash and go hair styles and wanted a significant change? Kuddos to these ladies for their change!!

  12. I think you should follow who you resonate with. But each person is different. Some want to only follow relaxed hair, twisted hair, afro or whatever. If someone isn’t wearing their hair the way I want and I can’t get inspiration from their archives of videos, then I move on and I don’t comment it about their preference.

That said, I see more supportive statements and most of the women I follow know that when they get on youtube they can’t please everybody and they don’t try. They are professional and strong.

Sometimes I think we want everything to be perfect. If you do, then videos will not be for you.

  13. I don’t see the problem with AE, I mean a lot of naturals are cutting their hair into a shape. Her face it beautiful enough to pull it off. But SY..smh, I use to follow her when I first BC, and she was my inspiration. I have no problem with her perming her hair, but I didn’t like the reason she gave “to make my life easier”. Wasn’t this whole journey is to educate women who think or hate natural hair to rid themselves of the chemicals? I listen to all the right reason to free my self from the creamy crack, not to go back to the crack just to make my life easier. Plus with all that hair, a natural ponytail would not look just a good? If it was too much, then how come she didn’t cut it back to shoulder length? Waist length hair is a little too much for me too.

    1. Dorism – it seems like you are still looking at this from your point of view. We can’t say what would have been easier for SY or what would have looked just as nice from her view. That’s your opinion and that’s fine. I used to watch her for her makeup videos, I’m guessing before she was natural. She still had great videos then and when she went natural her channel grew even more. The message here is that you may not approve, but she was open enough to share her journey and as her life has changes other things may have forced her to change her priorities. If Perming her hair was “easier” we should learn to accept what we don’t understand. Personally I wouldn’t go back but that’s me. I’ll still watch her either way. Oh btw I just saw that she BCd again so I know that will start this whole thing over again.

    2. I agree with you, I was disappointed with her reasoning it seemed very contradictory of everything you previously lived by. That’s why I don’t care, I love my hair. Permed or Natural and when I say it is beautiful either way I am not.making that up. But I prefer natural, it suits me better, and I am not going to start a channel about how I love natural hair and how you should too to turn around and perm it. WE paint ourselves in these corners for subscribers and likes, be whoever you want to be today because that is okay! I think she lost kewl points for that lame explanation because honestly she didn’t need one.

  14. I love these two, and I love their confidence with facing the hair nazis! #YES. Some people have such a sense of entitlement- these women don’t owe us anything, this is THEIR hair journey! I still love their channels and will continue to be a fan, irregardless of their texture or length. The irony is that both of them approached the explanations of their hair changes in different ways- Africanexport with the “I don’t really care what you think, because my hair is boss” attitude and SimplyYounique with the “I understand if you unsubscribe” approach. In my opinion, what these women do or don’t do with their hair is not a reflection of their character and I still adore them to pieces. Do you ladies!

  15. People are always saying “I’m gone do me”, but what they need to say is “I’m gone let you do you”. It’s not of our business. It’s called a journey so it has turns and curves and even U-TURNS and new directions. We change our shoes, we change our mates, we change our minds, we change our hair. People can’t be mad and keep another person down. This is a form of not allowing someone their choice. THIS IS AMERICA!

    1. Love your comment Asmerelda, but it’s a global village not just America cause I’m all the way in South Africa, Mzanzi for sure!!

  16. I’ve come to the conclusion that its funny when people get so upset to give each other a backlashing because of a change in their hair. I went from having relaxed hair all my life that began thinning really bad in 2010 before my 20th bday (3 visible bald spots!) to gaining somewhat thick hair from two 6-month stretches (ends still thin, 1 bald spot still visible) to finally big chopping May 31st (2014) with 2 inches of hair on my head. When I first BC’d some of my close family members & friends were PISSED!!!! Even though they KNEW & SAW the damage of my relaxed hair, only a few of them are happy for me & see how much growth I’ve gained in these 2 & a 1/2 months (only 1 bald spot remains & is growing back rapidly!!!). So, I wrote all this to say, in the long run do what you feel is best for you. Anytime someone says something negative or gives a nasty look toward my hair, I just think to myself “it aint on your head, so why worry about it?” 😉

  17. Nikkimae2003 also did another big chop recently and she was my main inspiration of going natural. At least she and africanexport are still natural. I think it is a positive thing to cut their hair short because those who cut their hair short recently could relate to where they are in their journey. When I first did the big chop I followed them as my inspiration for long healthy natural hair but I also looked for vloggers who were new to natural hair (such as naturalme4c). I think it’s wonderful Nikkimae2003 not only cut her hair but also donated it shows that kinky natural hair is valuable and can be grown long enough and healthy enough to be donated.

  18. AE Looks good!! I love the cut!!
SY on the other hand I personally do not find relaxed hair attractive on Black Women so I cannot say anything positive about her choices.

Its their life but I can see myself still watching AE because she is still natural, I will not be watching SY because she has nothing useful for me any longer. Her focus will be on relaxed hair and thats not what I like.

  19. I love them both. More reason, why ppl should just do them! They chose to share a piece of their life with us…but at the end of the day, it is not about us! Im shocked that folks would go soo far…get your own life!

  20. I love African Export’s cut. I have always loved this cut since the 80’s/90’s. That singer from the British R&B group Loose Ends(I know I’m dating myself, lol) had a similar cut. I have seen a few of SY’s vids, but have watched more of AE’s vids, so if she has a channel that is about more than just hair (like Joulzey or TheChicNatural aka BackSyncFan, her viewership could survive.

  21. I love AfricanExport and her hair is amazing long or short…It’s perfectly acceptable to unsubscribe to Simplyounique’s channel if you wanted natural hair support.

  22. I agree with the commenters. You won’t find me hairbashing here. I remember hearing that Younique had some major life changes/additions or what not, so I understand as well. And AE, I kinda figured she would BC only because she was wearing wigs so much, and it’s hot in Cali. Still love and will watch both, esp. AE.. love her personality.

  23. I still for the life of me cannot figure out what the heck is wrong with these people flipping out about about hair that does not belong to them! Being surprised or shocked even, is a natural reaction but backlash that’s just stupid! No one…No One is going to tell me what I can & can’t do with my hair. They could not possibly be that concerned when trust & believe there are more important issues than someone’s hair. Get yo life, please!

  24. If you check out simplyonique’s facebook page, she states what she’s going through.

Let’s not only keep her in our prayers, but each other too. Remember, nothing in life is guaranteed…, but we can try and do our best.

Peace & continued blessings to all,
    tms

  25. I agree, at the end of the day its their hair, their life. I grew my natural hair past my brastrap and recently loc’d it.. I caught a little flack for that? And I am still natural. It always surprises me when people get so mean and ugly over people’s decisions to do what they want to with their own hair. These vloggers become hair slaves to their viewers sometimes…its crazy. I have followed both of these ladies since 2008 because it is when I went natural and seeing the changes didn’t throw me off. I understand that after a while you start to make changes to your natural hair depending on lifestyle, level of patience etc. The overall goal is not always “long” natural hair. Most vloggers will tell you that. It really is their journey and they are just taking viewers along for the ride. Also once thick natural hair gets to a certain length it is a ton of time and work. Everybody don’t have time to be dealing with it, and everybody doesn’t want to.

  26. Kudos to both ladies for doing what is best for them. Why do we as a black community feel we need to judge others by what they do to their hair? It’s just hair and it will grow back. With regard to the young lady that chose to relax her hair, she knows the pros and the cons and has been on both sides of the fence. And for the other young lady that decided to cut her hair into a bangin hairstyle, I totally love it. Let’s focus our energies on things that are much more important than the length and the texture of our hair.

  27. i saw the video of African Export and I can see why she did another Big chop,i’ve been thinking of cutting my hair too!. But with regards to Simply younique, well, it’s her personal choice. Keeping natural hair is more than hair to many and this is why their viewers feel “betrayed” when one of their sister crosses to the other side. Also, your hair becomes everyone’s hair the moment you start a public website giving other women hair advice.

  28. It always amazes me how horrible and trite women can be…two wonderful, lovely women made decisions regarding their hair….something we ALL DO AT SOMETIME IN OUR LIVES and it is as if each of them walked up and stole something precious such as a child or a beloved mate from them. Ladies..it is just hair..subject to review and change. These grown women did not have to say one word to any of us regarding their choices! Grown women do this everyday..make decisions about all sorts of things..are we going to get disappointed and depressed every time a grown woman makes a decision that has NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR LIVES?! I simply do not see the importance of SimplyUnique’s or AfricanExport’s decision to change THEIR HAIR as something for me to get emotional or much to my surprise violent ( the reader who wanted to punch SimplyUnique in the face is a person who needs watching/observation in my view) over. IT’S JUST HAIR and IT’S NOT YOUR HAIR. As a woman that has been natural since 2008 I have to say the natural way of growing and dealing with your hair is NOT as simple as any of the YOU Tube video’s would lead you to believe. One of the stark realities I have come to know (and there are many) is the longer the hair grows the more time effort and in many cases talent you have to have to really make this thing work. Most of us wanted “the freedom and ease ” of doing our hair in the most chemical free and cost effective way…the real deal..this is not an exact science and what may work for one may not work for others. In my life trial and error are costly…need I say more with respect to “product junkies” ( by the way..ya wind up spending just as much in product buying and testing as you would visiting your salon every two weeks for a wash and set. Life is unpredictable and we all have to “roll with it baby!” as it comes along…this includes doing what is best for the amount of time we have available. AfricanExport and SimplyUnique will always remain women I admire and will continue to follow…and I do not care how they decide to do their hair..I will be watching..cuz that’s what REAL GROWN WOMEN DO!!!..WE DO WHAT EVER WE WANT OR DECIDE TO DO!!

  29. I also saw these two ladies and you know what, big deal!!! There are so many issues going in this country right now and the world, hair is not that important especially someone elses hair you don’t even know personally. I left positive, reinforcing comments on those videos because I knew they were going to get the business from the mentally challenged folk in YT land.

  30. People are nuts! These people follow others on YouTube and convince themselves that they are really friends with these people and have the right to be angry with people for making changes in their personal lives. Its ridiculous.
Personally I understand perming or cutting waist length natural hair. My natural 4b hair is mid back and the trial and tribulations of wrangling this thick main into submission can be time consuming. You know how much money I spend on my favorite products? If I had their length, I’m not sure I’d perm it or chop it off but I totally understand why they did it.

  31. My hair is relaxed, and long. It’s not how fast your hair grows, but how much of that growth you keep. I keep the length because my hair doesn’t tangle as much in a relaxed state. I just make sure I keep it moisturized. If my hair were natural (and it was for a very long time) I’d still be breaking combs left and right. The condemnation of the Natural Nazi’s is irritating at best. Hair IS just hair – an accessory to do with what you will. If you choose to say your hair is a political and social statement, fine; but please stop belittling others who don’t follow your course.

    1. For one thing using combs on natural hair is something taught in Naturals 101, thats why u experienced breakage!
And, if u have so many issues with Naturals why are u on a Natural Hair Blog?!?!?

  32. At this point when I watch YouTube I look at only that. I dont even bother with the comment section anymore. I was done after all these petty, no life having, bitches dumped on her. And yes, she is on a personal journey right now according to her Facebook posts. Everyone has a right to walk this life out whatever way they choose. Our hair is a personal expression, but when you have a real life, with real issues, at the end of the day, it is just hair!

  33. Honestly it makes perfect sense to unsubscribe from them. If you watched their videos to get tips on managing long natural hair there isn’t much point to it nor unless you’re just sticking around because you enjoy them.

I feel like they’re taking it too personally. Obviously they should do what they want with their hair but that doesn’t mean everyone is obligated to be a part of it.

  34. I was actually a little saddened by the changes to both ladies hair but not in a way that I would bash them. I personally prefer long natural hair but that’s my preference. At the end of the day, what a person chooses to do with their hair is really their business and while I may feel that, “awwww dang why did you do it?” upon first finding out, it quickly changes to an “oh well, not my damn head.”

  35. I do respect the choices of both women; however in simplyounique is no longer natural. I do know first hand that life can throw you a curve ball and sometimes that last thing you want to deal with is your hair, but I understand.
I don’t understand the uproar with Africanexport, her hair is still in its natural state ( hair gorgeous as ever). I believe she has a great deal to offer the natural hair community. She hasn’t altered her hair texture. I think that we have to remember that both of these women are “Grown” and if they choose to go bald, color there hair, b/c it’s there choice to do so, I think people might be a little bit more vested than they should be. These YouTube channels are for entertainment purposes while still providing great information on how to care for our hair.

    1. I’m actually not surprised about African Export cutting her hair. She wore her hair in wigs and weaves a lot for awhile there and that is partly why I unsubscribed to her channel awhile ago. There’s nothing wrong with wearing weaves and wigs, I wear extensions sometimes, but it’s rare. I wanted to glean inspiration from her and others as to how to wear, manage, and grow my natural hair without weaves. AE has also expressed how she gets bored with the same ol’ same ol’ and likes to change things up a bit. Retaining length is often about wearing your hair in variations of the same way until you hit your goal length. Or knowing your hair is waist length but it’s armpit length or shoulder length shrunken and you have to resort to all of this threading, blow-drying, flat-ironing (and don’t sweat or get wet!), bantu knotting, a bunch of braiding – you feel like your hair is more work than a relaxer, the thing you wanted to get away from – just to get your shrunken tangled hair to half the length and manageability it is stretched. There’s also a long list of don’ts when you are trying to grow your hair long and some people find that frustrating and limiting. I think the short haircut suits AE but since I don’t plan on cutting my hair, I won’t be watching her channel anymore.

As far as Simplyounique, I respect her decision but I won’t be watching her channel, either. Her relaxed her is pretty on her and all that matters is that she’s happy. I personally have no desire to relax my hair. I know what it looks like relaxed and I feel like I see relaxed hair all day and every day, it doesn’t excite me or suit me personally. In terms of natural hair being time-consuming, when my natural gets to be too time consuming, I throw it in a bun or would rather wear braid extensions then get a relaxer. But that’s just me. These vloggers have to understand that when they make major changes, their loyal years-long subscribers are not all going to be supportive, especially if they’re channel was about growing long, natural hair.

Conversely, Kisseventy stopped relaxing her long hair and is transitioning and her subscribers are mad at her. NikkiMae cut off her hair and donated it to Pantene Lengths. There didn’t seem to be backlash toward her for doing that. Even though Nikkimae’s cut was fierce, I felt like I was the only one shocked at how much hair she cut off after she led us through a long hair journey.

  36. I cant believe Simply, relaxed her hair! YESSSSS, its her hair & she can do what she pleases with it. But, I cant wait to see how it looks in year or two length wise ’cause I have yet to see a relaxed woman or girl who started with extra long hair and dont experience major breakage.

  37. I’m in shock simply yo unique was one of the first natural hair youtubers I found I’m suprised she relaxed it wowwwww!!!! I’m stunned but it’s her hair not mine. then as for African export that was also a shocker. But I mean it’s whatever she grew it before she’ll do it again.

I love how simplyyounique is real understanding how it could effect her subscribers.

Check out http://www.curlskiksfashion.com for fashion and NAtural Hair also we have a giveaway going on

  38. From 2003-2010 I was natural and my hair was below waist length. Then I got a relaxer. For me, it was the most destructive and worst decision I ever made concerning my hair and when ALL was said and done, it was just over bsl in the back and to my breasts in the front. Then I went natural again and had to bc all that leftover relaxed hair. But… even though for me it was a mistake, I COMPLETELY understand why someone would chop it all off. When you grow hair for a long time, it often is lost on others the amount of time and care one has to devote just to hair.

I was in the middle of a large move, new jobs, new home and schools , etc and doing hair was just not in the cards–too much going on. Plus I was simply tired. I would have to spend over an hour detangling and if I decided to use heat, my arms would ache from having to hold up sections to press and even at arms length, my hair was longer than my reach–a real bummer.

I stopped watching the ladies above a while back and honestly if I was still watching them, I probably would not watch videos of a person with relaxed hair simply because I want inspiration for my natural hair and am not into being a reality tv or youtuber fan. I watch to learn, mostly about products and techniques but if a vlogger begins to give more than that, I usually keep it moving because I never watched for those other reasons.

People should do what they wish with what they have–but hair on youtube and caring for it is a product and it has and draws a certain audience–as long as vloggers who gained their fans due to hair understand the gamble–then it is all good and all on them. Best of luck to both ladies and what ever Younique is going through I truly wish her the best.

  39. Personally I’m thinking about putn a relaxer in my hair too! I have been natural since 2011 and it is NOT working for me! My hair is LIMP, brittle, dry, etc. Going natural has been the worse experience for me. I have realized that natural is not for everyone. It’s not that I don’t want it to work, but it’s just not working.

    1. That’s honest. Iv been natural and back to perms twice. It was a lot to take care of, and time consuming. Now this time around I’m a little wiser. But, I don’t blame u. In the words of Jill Scott, “everything ain’t for everybody.”

    2. I’m sorry that you’re struggling with your hair journey. Whatever you choose to do with your hair, I hope that you find what works for your hair and it is healthy and you are happy. Good luck and be blessed 🙂

  40. First of all, it is just hair. Anyone who has a life and responsibilities and concerns othet than the most superficial realizes that hair isn’t the most important thing in life. All my hair says about me is that I wear it naturally. I can have long hair or short hair, how I feel about myself doesn’t change. As for long haired naturals going short, long hair is boring and time consuming. As for relaxers, why on Earth would I care if a stranger chooses to relax her hair? Is it envy that causes some women to get upset about these women’s hair?

  41. I can definitely see there is emotional pain in her face and voice as she spoke. my eyes started to tear because I felt it too…I can tell that this vlogger loved her natural hair but when situations crop up in life things that used to matter don’t anymore.

  42. I actually think short hair looks better on AfricanExport. Her features are so refined and elegant and the short hair really highlights that. I’m almost inspired to cut mine, but I’m too lazy and cheap to deal with the maintenance of short hair :

    1. Yes. I actually thought the cut was really cute on her. It brings out her beautiful skin and facial features. Joulzey also cut her in a similar style and I actually liked it better. I thought it really brought out her features as well. Some people have a hard time separating what they see in media (youtube is media) from reality. These people who make videos do have other things going on in there lives besides being on YouTube. Things change and hairstyles are no exception. They are entitled. And I like Simply’s relaxed hair, cute.

  43. It’s had to be hard for them to come forward, I applaud their courage. Natural hair has been hard for me, I have had so many setbacks it’s ridiculous.

Many people make bold statements and then have to change their stance due to extenuating circumstances. We should not judge, it’s just hair…

  44. I haven’t read all the comments (my computer doesn’t want to load them?!) but I have a couple of thoughts. 1. It’s not just hair. Not yet, not for a lot of us. And even though we have come a long way in understanding our hair…not so much with the scalp. It is still unexplored territory. And for a Long time we sacrificed the health of our Scalp for our hair. But that comes with a terrible price. Hair loss. Or the inability to grow hair or growing hair but it’s so thin you can see through it. And then there are those who became ill or got an infection and there illness or infection happened to be one that affected the scalp. So they See someone who Can grow long thick hair and they route for that person. And when that person Appears to through away what THEY would Love to have it brings the pain up again (in my opinion). And they can react negatively. But this should not stop the You tuber from wearing their hair how they wish. I just say this because there is a reason Why people react the way they do and While I do think there are always a few jerks I think there are reasons why the others had such a reaction and knowing that we can Understand and realize they have to deal with this pain and loss and then WE don’t feel like we are divided against ourselves. It’s just some of our members working through a painful subject. 2. Keeping long Natural is a Labor of Love, Money and Time. My 4c hair is armpit in the back and past bra strap in the front. My goal is past waist length. And already it takes FOREVER! But lets talk about the money because some naturals had long hair relaxed and I think they believe that long natural hair will behave in a similar fashion. Nooooooooo it won’t. It takes SOOOOOO much product!!! So much! Conditioner Tresemme Naturals everyone knows that. I use it as a Prepoo. I use 3/4 the bottle! Each time! And I haven’t even washed, Deep Conditioned (because you better) yet!! And the deep conditioner.. ..one use if it’s an 8 ounce bottle! :'( And they Usually only come in 8 ounce bottles!!! Then we got to style. $$$ And this is for spring-fall. Winter my hair requires 16 ounces of deep conditioner. Yes it doubled. Now true my hair is porous (always has been) but still! Am I complaining? No (venting:) because I LOVE LONG HAIR! And to achieve it I don’t mind what it takes. But I also realize the MAINTENANCE!! Or should I say the $$$! And a lot of the time you wear it up in a bun. Because it knots easily so windy day NOPE! Shorter hair is more Fun! I mean you can change it more easily do more things to it with less consequences. If your a person who loves change…… yeah I don’t see you Keeping long hair because while in theory there’s all these things you can do You Never will because of the amount of work it takes to do, undo or repair your hair. So yeah I’m perfectly fine with doing nothing but braids and then bun Now but I big chopped 3 (or 4 can’t remember. It was a lot) Times! I did all the styles, hats, updo’s and you name it’s while I was trying to learn what my hair liked and disliked. And Now I’m perfectly content to wear my hair the exact same way day after day except for special occasions and then back to old faithful 😀

  45. A grown woman being angered about what another grown woman does to her hair is just bizarre.

  46. I do think I would feel a little disappointed if a natural blogger I followed relaxed, but this is still a free country so if I didn’t like her videos anymore I could just unsubscribe! As for big chopping, it’s just a new style. I have a few non-black friends who have “big chopped” a few times in their lives just for a change or to remove the weight or even to get a fresh start after something emotional. The thing is that now we know enough about out hair that cutting it or straigtening it doesn’t “ruin” it. It can be grown back. I personally will not relax my hair again because I hated it and my hair was way too thin, but I don’t feel rage when I see a black woman with straight hair. Unless relaxer is contagious I think naturals are safe 😉

    1. i loved everything about your comment. its so true,
relaxers are not contagious, so while ppl would feel disappointed there shouldnt be any ‘backlash’..and it will grow back!
thats the whole point of the natural hair movement, isnt it? To say that first and foremost OUR HAIR GROWS and can grow LONG. if our hair didnt grow, the cutting or perming would be awful,a crime even.but if we think it does grow then whatever. 🙂

  47. I had very fine hair but very coarse so relaxed it and had been doing for years. What I found was that my relaxed hair would always break as new hair came in. This continued for years until I found Elixir hair oil by Les Joli. This oil truly saved my hair. It’s all natural which is a bonus. I massage it into my scalp every night and have been using it for a little over a year now. My hair does break anymore and is actually thicker and fuller for the first time in 8 years. My hair always grew anyway everyone’s does but it would break just as fast so my hair was always above shoulder height for most of my adult life. In this last year my hair has reached my shoulder blades! As an Afro caribbean this is outstanding! I have told all my friends and family about this oil because it has truly changed my life!

  48. Not that many people expressed negative opinions.. talk about a reach, and if they did, so what? It’s called a comment section for a reason and they aren’t even disabled. Dissent =/= backlash, a large number of threats, insults etc would be in that category. I think this idea that natural hair is inherently difficult is problematic, people that have been natural since their childhood most likely do not reach for relaxers because of time constraints, stress etc, it’s a mindset that many of us still have but I respect Simplyounique’s decision with her hair. I love AfricanExport’s cut, I would’ve did the same thing, i’ll cut before I ever relax or better yet get some weave/wigs/braids. No biggie though, wasn’t subscribed to either.

    1. Every site has negative comments…welcome to the internet. But for the most part the comments are overwhelmingly supportive.

  49. Problem is black women now are having a time of their life, colouring, cutting, going back to relaxers, now they know how to care for their hair. Both ladies look fabulous and may God bless them and comfort them through their testing times.

  50. I feel like these claims of a “backlash” is a joke. I went through the comments section and I MOSTLY noticed positive feedback from viewers, yet the focus is placed on the few bad apples. WHY!!?? People are trying to take advantage of anything, even if it means taking the few questionable comments out of context and inflating the negatives. It’s a shame.

    1. I agree. The comments are overwhelmingly positive, but people have a knack for focusing on the negative. I have seen a few youtubers get one or two negative comments out of hundreds and then go on a tirade about all the haters. It’s ridiculous.

      1. Right!! It’s annoying. Then have the nerves to blame it on the natural hair community..No, those people are just jerks..they do NOT represent the whole natural hair community. Cant stand those types of generalization. If you are going to call someone out, then go ahead and call THEM (by name) out.

  51. Youtube is for sharing. I don’t get why people take these videos so seriously. These ladies (and myself) are letting viewers into our journey. Either buckle up and enjoy or get off the bus. We’re not here to be judged.

  52. There are so many injustices in the world today. People are dying, crime is beyond control, etc. Spending time on debating what a person should do with their hair is pointless. Obviously they did not consider anyone else’s opinion when they made the decision. Just live your life.

  53. I am also a subscriber to both ladies channels. I was a little shocked at simplyounique’s relaxtion : ) but i wouldn’t lower myself to post derogatory comments. It’s her choice…her hair. It amazes me that some people think they have a right to spew such negativity about someone else’s choice…smh

  54. These two ladies do not owe anyone an explanation. The explanation doesn’t have to make sense or sit well with any one of us because in the end, it’s NOT our hair. If relaxing her is easier on her then so be it. If a person decides to chop a head full of healthy hair, big deal. Everyone has a right to switch it up and do whatever they want to their hair. Their reasoning behind their new change does not need to be validated. Yes, they choose to be on Youtube but they are not OWNED by anyone. They have choices and options just like the rest of us. I can appreciate African Export’s comment about not caring about those who are disappointed. Cutting her hair didn’t affect anyone but her plus it looks good on her. And Simply Younique’s hair is pretty whether it’s natural or relaxed.

  55. Ppl really need to find some business instead of trying to make others feel bad about THEIR decisions with THEIR HAIR….

    1. Well if nothing else good comes of this then I sincerely hope that wake-up call does hit home to the worshipful fans. The only deity man needs to worship is God. These modern-day idols are not God but it’s evident that to many desperate followers they are something of potential cult leaders. Sounds strong? not when you see the fierceness with which they’ll defend their hair-god, the dedication and praise heaped on them, and the obsessive compulsive giving of their attention & time to what sometimes is no more than another insecure person, looking for validation and celeb-status and revelling in their ability to draw in the masses with their ‘top of the chart’ tresses(!) Ugh! it’s bordering on mindless cult/guru following ….for some I hasten to add..thankfully not all are so undiscerning of what’s really going on. I’m sure some of the non-believers are wondering what the heck I’m on about too.

  56. Life is more than hair!As much as vloggers put themselves out there we must remember we do not own them and thet are FREE to do as they please. It’s really not that deep…..

  57. Why would people be so personally invested in a grown woman’s choice about her hair? Even though these ladies opened themselves up for comment, one still has to wonder why others responded so vehemently negative about a personal choice. I am not my hair or anyone else’s.

  58. Simplyunique is going through a divorce. In the video she vaguely explained how she was very stressed and frustrated and did not want to be bothered much with her hair. Some people chop it all off, some people tuck it away while others just relax. That’s what she felt was best for her. Let her be. Everyone handles things differently. We never know what people are going through so it would really help to not be so quick to judge and or assume. I wish her her the best and will pray for her.
This is what she posted to her facebook for everyone to see.

“Hi Everyone! I do not want to get into details about everything but I did want to let you know that I am getting a divorce. Not because of a lack of effort on my side. The relationship was not a healthy one (please note: no physical abuse involved). Maybe one day I will be able to share my story with you but for right now I would like to keep everything light. Life is a journey. In our lifetime we will be faced with many challenges but as long as we keep pushing forward, learn to adapt and recalculate we will always succeed. Never get too comfortable in a mess that you decide to stay there instead of brushing yourself off and trying again. Please continue to keep me lifted up in prayer. God Bless!”

  59. I have had a different range of styles, these women are doing what they feel like with their hair, the same way you do what you want with your hair.
As much as she is dedicated to her subscribers, she comes first and so does her happiness.
I’m natural, but I love my hair in braids, and when I do get length I will either put locks in my hair or go back to relaxing because I wear my hair the way I want and we as women,do not have to stick with one method of hair, our whole life..

  60. Ultimately, I find that a lot of women of color [followers, in this case] still have deep- seeded hair issues for a ton of reasons. Those reasons did not go away with “going natural.” Instead, they’ve amplified and have turned into issues of length, texture, and adamance that natural is the only thing anyone can ever do with their hair. I’ve been natural my whole life [my parents had 5 girls and perms weren’t even discussed in our homes as our parents constantly praised our thick kinks.] I acknowledge and accept that unless you truly do have self- hate issues which, newsflash natural hair community, not everyone does, it’s okay to do with your hair as you please or style it in a way that you think is most flattering to you/your lifestyle. That means if you decide that healthy straight hair is your best look (which, is entirely possible), or short hair is your thing you should do that without the fear of a bunch of self- conscious followers essentially putting their baggage on you. I feel badly for these YTers.

    1. I agree with you Kelsey. I didn’t ‘go natural'(a phrase that irks me, its not new if its something you always possessed) I stopped relaxing in 2010 because it was damaging my hair and I had gotten in to a decade long cycle of relaxing, getting damaged hair, growing out damage with weaves and extensions to relax the virgin growth and repeat. This was after not being able to cope with my unprocessed hair the first time I decide to stop relaxing in 1998.
I loved the youtube channels back in 2010 and 2011, but I am increasingly seeing what I feel to be a lot of internalised issues creeping into the natural hair community. Lengths checks, texture discrimination, growth enhancers, companies with ridiculously extensive product lines, and product hauling.
If the hair grows out of your head it’s natural in my opinion. If you relax it then you are chemically processing your hair, and yes it often is for manageability. I know while I got used to having textured afro hair again for at least two years I almost ran to the hair shop for a relaxer kit on wash days. I’m glad I was more committed to having healthy hair than not. So committed, I am now seeing the benefits of being patient. However, even though my hair is now thicker and longer than I can remember, I am tempted to cut it short just so I can spend less time on it. This isn’t hatred of my hair. Yes our hair is our crowning glory but I think women of colour are slaves to their hair and have been for a few decades now. So much so that there are more non black than black individuals financially reaping the rewards of our obsession. My hair journey has been a journey of continuing self acceptance. I always joked I wore my natural as a statement to the outside world that I am good enough as I am. Now I really don’t care. The natural hair community has given me great information on how to care for my hair and been a support when I wanted to process again, but is also full of hair care disinformation, rigidty/facsism sometimes and some questionable agendas.
When all is said and done we are not our hair. Our hair is our adornment. Props for encouraging more black women to love their hair in it’s natural state, however we need to love ourselves and each other no matter what state we or our hair is in. You can’t love another till you can love yourself so start there.

    2. Exactly! Thank you! I don’t think we’ve reached TRUE acceptance until we allow ourselves to style as we want to, and still embrace and uplift one another. Formerly having been both relaxed and natural before, I thought the natural movement would unite us in a sense – and it has. However, some have taken the opportunity to segregate themselves by texture discrimination/superiority (the ‘hair typing’ chart), defining what is “truly natural,” dismissing and denouncing styling techniques, the whole nine. It’s incredible. Gone are the times when women styled out of ignorance, never really knowing the potential of our hair. The information is out here now. Black hair is so versatile and it’s ours, the only of its kind, so if my sisters relax, ‘go natural,’ dye, flat iron, braid, take growth aids, whatever, it should only serve as a testament to the flexibility of our hair – not a catalyst for confusion or hate!

  61. I’ve been natural for 3 years now and I want to be honest here. I know the right thing to state publicly is that every woman has the right to do what she wants with her hair, but I’m not sure I really feel that way. Maybe I don’t passionately despise naturals who relax their hair or who BC after achieving such great length, but I do know that those decisions are incomprehensible to me. I will accept their decisions, but I will secretly disapprove. This makes me feel bad because I want to be open and supportive of all naturals/ women in general, but I’d be totally lying if I said I am. I haven’t ever seen the videos from either of these vloggers, but I know exactly what I would do if I loyally followed either one of them: I would feel disappointed and I would be less interested in their videos. (Not entirely uninterested, just less interested) And don’t get me wrong, I love short hair as much as I love long hair. I think the difference between BCing perfectly long and healthy natural hair and BCing damaged hair is that I can comprehend and accept the appeal of the latter, it’s out of necessity. The former just doesn’t make sense to me YET. I’m going to force it to make sense to myself one day.

    1. It comes down to choice,as a natural that person may not want long healthy hair, but short natural hair and that is the point.
      they are allowed to change

    2. Your honesty makes me uneasy. I don’t want to say your way of thinking is wrong, but it is flawed. First, there is absolutely nothing wrong with someone switching up their hairstyle by cutting their hair. Some people do not obsess over length;especially, as it is not an indicator of health. There seems like a deep rooted issue. I me a this in all respect of course

    3. I hope it does soon, because no one owes you anything really. They could close their youtube channels and I am pretty sure that your life would continue. While I love SimplYounique, she was one of the first vloggers I followed who had similar hair to mine, I am not begrudging her hair choices–because surprise, its HER hair! She didn’t sell me a bill of goods, I followed because I was interested in what she was doing at the time. Equally, if I am not interested, I just don’t click on the video. That simple.

    4. There are some people who just simply like to have fun with their hair. They view their hair as an accessory. My cousin had hip length hair that was thick and luscious but it never phased her. She really did not care for length. To her, long hair was boring so she cut it, colored it, flat ironed it, wore wigs etc. She did all of these things and never regretted what she did. For her it was about having fun with her hair because she got bored easily. It seems like her hair was one of her many ways of expressing her personality. Not everyone is like that but that’s just who she was. It’s that simple. No one has to do anything out of “necessity” it’s about the choice to do as they please. To secretly disapprove someone doing something drastic to their own hair sounds really strange unless it’s an immediate family member. You now it’s a problem if you are more invested in someone else’s hair more than they are. Don’t take life so seriously. Live a little.

    5. It’s easy come, easy go ….but not for all. Things are only precious to us when we believe (or experience) we won’t come by them easily again, if at all. Not surprising women who experience laborious years for growth are loathe to go chopping that growth off. If they knew it was easier to grow back then of course there’d be a lot less emotional investment attached. Just look at a handful of random naturals’ videos on hair growth progress and their 25-step (wash-n-go??) regimes and you’ll start to get a feel at least for the value of this commodity we have on our heads. If you were hungry & not knowing when you’d get to (food) shop again, you might be more than a bit peeved at seeing someone rock up and start chucking food on the floor mightn’t you? You’d certainly be more reluctant to go clear out your kitchen cupboards & fridge-freezer.

  62. I only wonder what possesses individuals to return to relaxers. Longer hire equals longer time investment. I have thought about cutting several times. But I agree to each her own. I personally think hair length shouldn’t matter. I think that length obsession can be similar to straight hair obsession. Both can be linked to a European standard of beauty. Just my 2 cents

  63. I love AfricanExports cut..she wanted some style and a change. That makes sense. Now as for the Simplyounique, I don’t know if the high maintenance reason sounds genuine to me. You can choose how much or how little you want to do with your hair. She mentioned she just wears a ponytail or a wig now – why couldn’t see wear a ponytail/bun or wig with her natural hair? The make-up she had on in the video sure didn’t look low maintenance, but hey maybe she did that just for the video and its not a day to day thing-like with styling her hair. I wonder if the days when she doesn’t feel like doing her make-up if she just puts on a mask.

You know what though? Some days eating 3 meals and 2 snacks a day just becomes too time consuming and expensive. So, from time-to-time I just go hungry. I get so tired of being hungry all the time though, but what can you do? I guess this is the same thing. (I’m being real serious-matter fact its the hunger that has me so damn sarcastic right now)

    1. Well I’m not sure but as I was reading through some of the youtube comments, it seems that she relaxed her hair out of convenience due to the stress from a divorce. Even if you wear a simple bun, if you do not properly maintain it, depending on the texture you can experience, tangles, breakage, matting etc and all of that takes time. Especially if you have thick long hair. So there still needs to me daily, weekly or bi-weekly maintenance such as detangling, styling etc which can be tedious and or time consuming considering how thick and long her natural hair was. I guess it was all about convenience and easier manageability. I mean, considering her situation I’m sure she went through a lot so I understand.

  64. I read through their comments and did not find one negative one. This is all unnecessary propaganda. People are not upset with them. It is just hair.

  65. I didn’t notice any negative comments on AE’s video, but since YT does this “most liked comments/popular comments up top” type of display, I honestly probably didn’t see them.

Also, can we talk about why people say “big chop” just because you got a new haircut style? I did know about this phrase 2 years ago, and I kind of miss that time, haha! So many beauty and hair channel women get new haircuts (bobs, pixies, asymmetrical, tapered and so on), and just because a natural hair black woman does it, we have to label it “big chop”??? Ergh.

  66. We need to support these ladies, united we stand divided we fall. Whether you are relaxed, natural, dreads, braids, weave. We all have issues and should lift each other up and not down.

  67. Wow! I can’t believe somebody would threaten violence against someone because of their hit. What is this Iran? We live in a country of free choice! Right? Now I can see both sides of the coin. We watch these vloggers for tips, and to help us on our journey too. You get so excited at their progress because it reflects you own, then they change the course and it feels like a betrayal. I get that. But why get so wrapped up in their journey, it’s THEIR JOURNEY. I like to look at the videos and refer to them when I am stuck on an I pass. I like to see how they handled breakage and such. However, I know that in real life, I am can chose what is best for me. I don’t follow anything or anyone. I don’t look to see myself in their eyes. I don’t go to that level. These women that are looking for this, need to find the beauty in themselves and know their journey is unique. And a hair cut and some creamy crack isn’t going to change that.

  68. I love African Export’s cut. I think she looks great. I don’t know anything about the other woman. I personally don’t care but I also don’t think it’s wrong that other women do care. I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion. Sometimes people are going to dislike what you do. I don’t think there was a backlash. Some people just didn’t like their choices. I also want to say I hate that people say they get relaxers because natural hair is difficult. I used to get a relaxer every 6 months and wash and style it every 2 weeks. I still think my natural hair is easier.

  69. I think since YouTube is such a voyeuristic site that encourages and input form the users, people think they have some sort of ownership over the vloggers and voicing their displeasure and going ade $hit over something like this is absolutely normal. You can’t possible be so passionate about something if you are not emotionally invested.

  70. I don’t understand “It was too much to deal with” and “life took over” – just leave your hair alone? Twist it up and tuck it away? Put it in a bun? Vbloggers don’t need to justify their hair choices to me, but when reasons for relaxing are those mentioned, I don’t get it. Isn’t it really just “I wanted a change” or “I prefer it relaxed right now”? Which is fine.

What is the difference (in terms of time consumption and styling) between wearing your relaxed hair in a ponytail everyday and wearing your natural hair in the same “protective” style everyday? The only time saving I can think of is wash day (admittedly a big one for some).

This whole narrative of “Natural hair makes life difficult” is redundant. You know, the whole “Natural was sooo stressful. I couldn’t feed my kids or have fun with my friends. It held me captive.”

    1. LoL…exactly! People are starting to make natural hair into and ordeal. I’m tired of hearing how easily it breaks off because of its kinkiness. Of how every turn of a coil is a weak spot…like okay stop cause if that was the case no one would be able to grow even 6 inches of hair. Then there is the you can’t use heat, just one pass of low heat is enough to warrant heat damage and necessitate a big chop. Now it’s you can’t even color natural hair, cause if you do you will have to sacrifice length. So apparently your hair will break off from that too. Apparently, you can’t wash natural hair either, cause of the shrinkage, or the dryness, or the best one of all “hygral fatigue” . Like stop this madness.
My original impression of natural hair is that it is inherently stronger and healthier than relaxed hair. That is why I transitioned. I was able to flat iron, wash, and blow dry my relaxed hair and still had hair down my back. So I figured hey, if my hair was natural I’d probably be able to retain even or length, faster, and with alot let breakage.

    2. “What is the difference (in terms of time consumption and styling) between wearing your relaxed hair in a ponytail everyday and wearing your natural hair in the same “protective” style everyday? The only time saving I can think of is wash day (admittedly a big one for some).”

      I’m saying…

She could even get it straightened or get a Brazilian Keratin treatment…which would allow for her to revert back to curly hair.

  71. The unique and beautiful thing about our hair is that the texture makes it so versatile we can do so many things with it. We can rock it straight (permanent and temporary), locked, braided, twisted, cut, colored, weaved, etc., and a host of other things. To take personal offense over what someone else chooses to do with their individual lives is rather over the top. As long as these ladies are happy that’s all that matters. I STILL watch their vlogs!

    1. The person who has no business of her own to mind will instead busy herself minding the business of others lol

  72. I haven’t read all the comments yet but wanted to share my thoughts. What is wrong with big chopping again? Of course, it’s a woman’s prerogative but in a way I see a big chop as a good thing and a sign of progress. Why? Because now Black women know it’s possible to have healthy and long hair and achieve it. Many of us didn’t know that before the natural hair movement and believed black hair can’t grow and long hair was for white women and other races. How many of us tried to hold on to every last strand of our hair no matter if it was brittle or broken and not trimming it so that we can get some length? I know I did. It’s great to know if we can grow our hair long once or twice, we can do it again and again just like other races. As for relaxing, I was little sad to see simplyounique relaxed but so what? There are so many other naturals to learn from. And overall, I need to worry about the hair on the top of MY head, not someone else. My energy needs to go to that.

  73. I refuse to believe natural hair = more time. What styles you CHOOSE to wear and the aesthetic values given to those styles determines how much work you feel like you have to put in. Folks make a million in one excuses for why they return to the creamy crack when in reality it’s because you wanted to. If you are tired, stressed whatever you can big chop and rock a TWA. Weaves and wigs also provide versatility as well. Natural hair is not hard people are just hard on their natural hair and what they deem as beautiful.

And yes I unsubscribed bc permed hair does nothing for me.

As for AfricanExport I love her hair!

    1. I agree that your life should not revolve around the time it takes to maintain natural hair. But that depends on one’s perspective at that moment in time and their current situation in their life. In her case, she went through a divorce which explains why she was stressed, frustrated and did not want to be bothered. Everyone handles things differently. Some women would have chopped it all off, but she chose to relax. No matter how simple your natural hair routine or hair styles are, it still takes a considerable amount of time to maintain the tangles etc especially hair that is thick and long like Simplyunique’s hair. So during her hard times, I guess she felt she needed to do what was easiest for her. You never know what people are going through which is why I never assume or judge. I wish her all the best.

  74. I’m not surprised that people were disappointed, but I am surprised that people were not able to rise above their own expectations in order to respect the decision these ladies made about their hair. I know that change is challenging for everyone, but I don’t understand why people feel so strongly about the hair growing out of another adult’s scalp. I look forward to the day that everyone has the opportunity to have bra strap to waist length hair, so they truly understand the amount of time and love it takes to retain length.

I am truly thankful for the two ladies mentioned above, because they are addressing issues long hair naturals encounter after years of caring for their long hair. I am also thankful for Cipriana, Alicia James, and Razorempress for helping me understand that my routine doesn’t have to take over my life, but ultimately people have to do what is best for them. I just wish, as women, we did a better job of building each other up, even when we don’t agree, and respect each other’s decisions.

  75. Vloggers become public figures when the launch their youtube channels for the world to see. Unfortunately, some folks believe that they are entitled to an opinion of others behaviors – this is compounded when the other person is a public figure / celeb / even in the general vicinity… I prefer to live by the “do you/do no harm” philosophy.

  76. I follow both ladies and I would never dare blast them. After all it’s their hair! People just need to relax the comments I read had me appalled. Personally I no longer have a reason to follow simplyounique because I have learned what I can from her already and going forward I don’t think her videos will appeal to me.

  77. I agree with what jojosatoes said. I’m not subscribed to either of these ladies–(tho I’ve seen a few of their videos in the past), but decided to scroll through the comments posted to their videos to see the backlash for myself. “Backlash” really is an exaggerated way of describing it. I kept scrolling and scrolling, and hardly came across any hate or vitriol. A few people expressed disappointment, but the majority of comments were very positive, supportive and encouraging.
I love BIG natural hair, lol. But Africenexport’s cut looks wonderful on her. I’m confused by Simplyounique’s explanation of relaxing due to being stressed and overwhelmed. As though relaxed hair is easier to maintain than natural? I don’t agree with that, but to each his own I guess *shrug*

    1. It seems that Simplyunique went through a divorce which explains why she was stressed, frustrated and did not want to be bothered with the time it takes to maintain healthy long thick natural hair.

  78. Simply Younique has said on her facebook page that she is going thru a divorce dealing with that is why she chose to relax. African Export wears a lot of wigs so IDK why she even cut her hair I am sure it will be covered in a wig again on her next video.

  79. I’m not judging either, their hair, their business. As for me, I would big chop again, I have countless times over the last 9 years since returning to natural. I will never relax my hair again! I don’t care what’s going on in my life. I have had challenges just like most of us have had over the last 9 years, but nothing that has prompted me to even consider getting another relaxer. My answer to stress, death, depression and any of those nasty hands that life will deal out has anyways been a good ole’ hair cut 🙂

  80. I was never subscribed to Simplyounique but was disappointed she relaxed. No I will not support her. I won’t die, and I won’t comment about my lack of support. Does she really care? Should I? I have been subscribed to African Export for about 5 years now. She had fabulous hair but I was excited for her cut. She kept it natural so why should I be concerned with how she chose to style it? Change is good, but I don’t like it when they spell out all the dangers of relaxing and then go back. I can support a hair cut. The length isn’t serious to me. But at the end of the day I would never be rude about it because it isn’t my hair. But I can support whomever I want.

  81. Long/natural hair is not for everyone-short/natural hair is not for everyone. Long hair doesn’t empower me-It’s just HAIR! I have never been obsessed with long hair. I’m natural but my goal is only is only 12-14 inches. That is more than enough hair for me. So why get mad at someone for cutting or relaxing their hair? It’s there hair!

  82. I really don’t understand why people are so invested in another person’s scalp. If these bloggers/vloggers/curlfriends in my head want to big chop, relax, wig it up, or weave it down, then that’s fine with me. I have no plans to finger detangle their bee-da-bees while I still have my own (or ever). Their journey is theirs and mine is mine. People act like hair won’t grow if it’s chopped, relaxed, or pressed. These people are grown adults. Let them be.

  83. Their hair looks awesome either way. It is there’s and they had their reasons for doing what they did.

Oh and can we please stop calling a hair cut a big chop? lol…if you are natural and you cut your hair just cos…it aint a big chop. Now if there is damage then ok…maybe I will give that to ya. lol

Some people are a mess and nothing can be done about it sadly.

  84. I have seen both of these videos and laughed to myself that African Export’s reason for cutting her hair would have worked for simply unique’s hair as well, but to each her own.African Export is trying to get her fitness game on now that she is in her mid 30’s and her hair was no longer a top priority. Plus she stayed wigged up so much there really wasn’t a point to having long hair. I am not mad or shocked at anyone who goes back to relaxing or if they chop off their hair. Its not my hair so I could care less. What both examples show is clearly long hair is a big deal to black women.

  85. I think the real issue is especially with simplyounqie is they sat here and made themselves popular off of natural hair videos. She took a cop out and relaxed it. But she was supposed to be all about natural hair? They have profited off of it and now it’s too much? Please. Glad I don’t worship bloggers. I find this is hilarious

  86. I think these ladies are echoing things that we have been unable/afraid to say ourselves. Our hair takes commitment and work. And there is nothing wrong in admitting that fact. But like Simplyounique said, if you get tired of the work you need to put in, you are left with only 2 choices relaxing or cutting. In the end they chose low maintenance over high maintenance. Choose what’s best for your life.

    1. I think another option can be to put in a weave or extensions. Those are styles that leave our hair relatively care free as well.

  87. I feel these women have every right to wear their hair as they wish. I personally haven’t been following either of them. It is interesting to note, however, that Simplyounique relaxed her hair because she was too stressed to deal with her natural hair, thus implying that relaxed hair was easier to take care of. Maybe her choice of style while she was natural added to the ‘stress of dealing with her hair’. When I don’t want to deal with my hair it’s up in twists for weeks/months. I could more understand if she simply said she just wanted to relax her hair. The way she pitched it sounded like she was embarrassed that she relaxed after making all those videos about natural hair. It is, after all, up to her how she wishes to wear her hair she doesn’t really have to explain herself to anyone, no matter how her followers feel.

    1. I understand where she’s coming from, natural hair IS a lot more to deal with then a relaxer. I never had to spend over an hour washing my hair when I was relaxed.

      1. I agree that these women have the right to do whatever they want to their hair without backlash, but I think we should be careful about saying/implying that relaxed hair is easier than natural hair, because I think that varies based on circumstances.

Relaxed hair was more difficult for me to maintain in several different ways as as compared to natural hair. My hair is fine, so relaxers ate up my length, and I was perpetually stuck in the awkward stage. My relaxed ponytails were sad, spiky imitations of what a ponytail should be, and I didn’t have very many styling options. Additionally, my stylist worked almost 45 minutes away from where I lived (and there weren’t Black salons any closer), so getting re-relaxed meant going directly to her shop right after school and trying to do homework while under the dryer, or completely sacrificing a Saturday to sit in a crowded, overbooked shop from 10am-6pm. Not to mention how much $80 every 6 weeks added up to….

As a natural, my fine, finicky strands are flourishing with little effort. Sure, thorough detangling means setting aside a 3+ hour block of my life, but who says I need to be thorough every week? Plus, I consider longer detangling and styling sessions to be a fair trade off for oozing scabs, hypocritical gossiping, and burnt ears. I’m on my own schedule, so I can do my hair when I see fit. And now, my styling options are limitless.

So if it’s easier for someone to pay more than $50 every 2 months, deal with scabs and breakage and be on someone else’s time, more power to them. But for me, being natural will always be easier. If my hair gets too long, I’ll just cut it off.

      2. I don’t spend over an hour washing my hair now that I’m not relaxed.

However when I was relaxed I spend over an hour doing my hair at the same length.

The difference? When I was relaxed I straightened my hair after washing it. This took ages now I don’t do anything.

      3. When I was relaxed it took me just as much time to do my hair as it does now that I am natural. The longer my relaxed hair got (and it was always considered long)-at the time time it was a little past BSL it was taking me 3 – 4 hours on average to pre-poo, shampoo, condition, blow dry, and then flat iron. That was my WEEKLY regimen. Only the first 3 days did I have “salon” looking hair, by the 4the day it was up in a bun or ponytail until wash day.
Day to day styling took about 15 minutes, the same as it does now that I am natural. The only difference now is that I do a wash an go everyday, but if I add the wash time to the styling time it takes me 20 to 30 minutes daily to style my natural hair.
It is all the same whether relaxed or natural.

    2. Yeah I found it interesting that Simplyounique mentioned that she didn’t have alot of time to take care of her hair but with her relaxed hair she says that she only puts it into a ponytail or a bun. so pretty much protective styling her relaxed hair something that she could’ve done with her natural hair.

now she is going through a divorce which is hard situation to go through so maybe relaxing it had something to do with that as well.

    3. From reading some of the comments under the her channel it appears that she has gone through a divorce. So i’m guessing that was the main reason for not wanting to be bothered with her hair. Her natural hair seemed pretty thick and long so I’m sure no matter how simple her hair style or routine was, it still took more time than she was willing to give in order to maintain it’s health and length by detangling, styling it etc vs the straight hair. I guess she just didn’t want to spend any extra time on her hair and you can’t blame her. You never know what people are going through sometimes so I rather just not assume or make judgements.

  88. I wonder what backlash YTers would receive for disabling comments? I’m all for discussion but not on my page you’re not, all that negative. I’m pretty sure all heck would break loose

    1. They won’t disable the comment section of the videos because for the most part that is how they make some of their money. But if the comments for those particular videos get out of hand they can choose to disable it for those videos specifically.

    2. Youtube pays based on subscribers, views, likes and comments MOST of these guru’s are making a killing off of youtube not to mention companies contact them and offer them free products and money to review their products. Disabling comments wouldn’t be beneficial to those there for the financial gain.

    3. I have seen some that disable comments/ likes for a majority of their videos. It makes me sad because I only thumbs up/ say nice things otherwise click out of the video. Too bad others can’t do the same

  89. Shocked at these ladies transformations. In the end I believe it is Just hair. No wonder in some cultures they cover their hair.! Different hair types causes a lot of envy, idolizing, anger and pain.

  90. Long hair is power, right or wrong. When the average black woman has naturally long hair, she is viewed as being a step above the rest. Same with women of other races. Obviously, there is a lot of psychological stuff going on about the benefits of having long hair but it is what it is. So a lot of people (other black women, in this instance) don’t understand why another black woman would throw away something they are desperate to have.

    1. I agree with you mia. Long hair is also a YouTube gold-value commodity as videos with thumbnails of women with long hair achieve HUGE viewing hits compared to those with women showing shorter hair. Totally agree with the psychological stuff going on too. I’ve observed behaviour/attitude differences even with some YouTubers – between when their hair started out short and when it became long. The outlook and confidence/self-love seemed to skyrocket along with the extra inches. Product endorsements fly in, slow-mo head twirling video ensues, some even post a ‘sympathetic’ (patronising) video consoling those viewers/fans ‘less fortunate’, you know with the zig-zag hair(!) telling them EVERYBODY’S hair is beautiful, just accept it….you get the picture. Makes me cringe at the misguided smugness and the low self-esteem fans of such posters who worship this kind of so-called hair success.

I can understand that length can be such a hard-earned commodity to come by, especially if hair is prone to breakage or slow growth, how it comes to be valued like gold, and if nothing else, chopping this precious commodity off seems like manic hair (if not Natural Hair YouTube) suicide to many… nevertheless it’s all so perverse in the first place – perceptions of good/bad & beauty standards that it speaks of bigger issues. Don’t you think?

  91. People are so crazy. I don’t care what you or anyone else does to their hair. I don’t even discuss my hair choices with my husband. I tell him what I’m going to do but don’t look for his approval or permission. We tend to think that people who are the limelight, i.e. stars, athletes, etc. owe us something because we idolize them. I’m beginning to understand and see what natural nazi means. Its almost like people have formed a natural cult and are punishing its members for stepping away from cult values and principals.

    1. Amen, though I still find “Natural Nazi” an offensive usage and thrown around as often “Nazi” in general is on the internet.

    2. Nazis killed people, women that are a little overzealous about natural hair express disagreement over choices, most of them are gone when you log off… not the same. Please stop using that phrase.

  92. I would be interested in the reasons they have for going back to a relaxed hair style. I don’t know if being natural was a part of a lifestyle or just a different type of beauty regimen.

  93. I’ll keep it simple. I’m glad they stopped doing what everyone else THINKS they should do or wants them to do and did what they felt was right for them. Also, as someone who started going natural back in 2002 when it was NOT a trend and UNPOPULAR, I have relaxed, big chopped and everything in between a few times. I don’t care what people say. I cut my hair now every two years. So what? I want to point out that African Export made a point that people keep missing: for some reason the natural hair community associates a natural hair journey with hair growth. Why? You literally have set yourself up for failure. 95% of naturals are chasing length bc of hair envy. Smh it’s sad what it’s become. Just be healthy and live for yourself instead of the constant approval of others. You already lost when your goal is based on envy.

  94. can’t believe AE received the amount of hate she did for cutting her hair. she gave many of us tips and tricks of the trade. we seen where we can go. she got to where she wanted to be and chopped. it’s just hair…it’ll grow back.

As far as Simply Yonique goes, i’ll still watch her youtube videos. relaxed or natural, healthy hair should ultimately be the goal. as far as i can tell, her hair looks pretty healthy to me and i’ll continue to watch. Just because a person isn’t natural doesn’t meant they know what they’re doing or that they have extremely unhealthy hair. GlamFun anyone? (like her but her hair was a hot mess). Also, she does wonderful make up tutorials.

I’ll continue to support them both. Funny how so many talk about unity and uplifting one another as black women but something as small as a haircut or a relaxer (dun dun dunnnn) can make us fall back from a positive individual.

  95. To be honest, these ladies owe no one an explanation about their hair preferences. I really hate that people place judgement or hold them to the standard the way they do. I have NEVER been disappointed because someone else’s decision wasn’t like mine (i.e. sexual preferences, natural, relaxed, wigs or weaves). They want change just like the next person. Last time I checked, they are grown. Don’t get me wrong, people follow them because of their journey, tips and occasional “just because”, but it’s really not that serious. Be a leader in your own skin. Follow your own tips and create your own journey.

  96. I think Africanexport’s new cut looks so good on her! I don’t really understand Simplyounique’s explanation for going relaxed especially since she said all she dose now is wear ponytails/buns or wigs. Couldn’t she have done those same things with her natural hair??? I understand the attachment viewers feel to youtuers. I know I would be super disappointed if Naptural85 relaxed her hair, but at the same time it’s not my place to tell them how or what to do with THIER hair. Its not like the information previously provided by them loses value simply because they made a change to their own hair that no longer fits with my own goals and aspirations for my hair. I respect the choice even if I don’t fully understand the thought process behind it (referring to Simplyounique’s choice to relax). While some naturals may have more emotion and other things tied to their hair it really is just hair and with that being said IT WILL GROW BACK. All the negativity, violent borderline threats over someone’s personal hair choices is so unnecessary. We have far more bigger more pressing issues to get bent out of shape over than how someone rocks their hair.

  97. It is so sad that folks get so invested in what someone else chooses to do with their hair. It’s really not that serious. We all make lifestyle choices that others may not agree with. That does not give anyone the right to bash another person. My own husband won’t agree with my hair choices but it’s my hair/choice. I still sub to both pages and I know that their choices were thought out as what is best for them. How would those negative people feel if their parenting or relationship choices were met with backlash? They’d say it’s no ones business and their personal choice.

  98. I never followed a vlogger so the best I can liken these reactions to is like when you watch your favorite show and your favorite character drastically changes or leaves the show and you get upset, haha. Maybe the hair becomes the star of the show and people just don’t like change.

Personally it does not bother me but I can sort of understand for the reasons above (people just get invested in things). Although not all opinions are equally important so if it were me I would pause at giving negative/disappointed feedback because unlike a show this is a person’s real life. What is done is done so I’m not sure what purpose it serves to express that you don’t like it…but ya know the internet (shrug)

I would like to big chop sometime soon and all the reasons she said made total sense to me. I would not personally relax my hair again because I hated the maintenance involved (hours at the salon, not getting it wet, scabs, you know…). Best of luck to both women and hopefully they let the scrutiny roll of their back as that’s what one has to do when you’re in the public eye, especially women because we get it real hard.

  99. I’m not surprised, when you look through youtube comments you can tell that some viewers feel a bit of ownership over whichever youtuber they’re commenting on. I also think because some women have so much hair envy for others that they can’t fathom why a youtuber would cut or relax their hair.

  100. Exploring your natural hair is great! But so is switching up the style. If you aren’t a long-hair lover then it should be okay to wear a short do. And when you see a short haired naturalista don’t assume that they are in the adolescence of their journey. Same with relaxed girls or naturals who like to straighten their hair, don’t assume that they don’t know anything about your struggle. It’s all about your personal style. To the naysayers; you do you, & let other people be themselves.

  101. Agreed. It’s best to do what works for you. I enjoyed both of these ladies videos early kn my natural hair journey. I’m actually glad they were able to continue to evolve despite the backlash. 🙂

  102. I think they both look great. I big chopped again two weeks ago after being relaxed free for the 8 years. I got bogged down with the maintenance of long hair so I cut off.

  103. I do not agree with cyber bullying. However I can understand the disappointment when your hair crush cuts their hair off. As the saying goes if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. So I simply planned to unfollow and unsubscribe when my hair crush announced that they plan to let their hair grow out. So I will continue to follow and learn as long as that’s the case.

I agree that my hair crush has every right to wear her hair in a manner that makes her feel good and that she likes. However if I’m following you for advice and information on my journey and you change your platform then I have to move on. I don’t agree with attacking the person or making them feel bad. I personally would point my attention in a new direction.

  104. I was shocked at their decisions as I always envied their natural hair however I cared for about 10 seconds then switched on CNN and saw there were more important things going on in the world! Live and let live; they’re still gorgeous!

  105. I find it all the more interesting! We are not supposed to be coveting other people’s stuff to begin with. With that being said, I think it’s far more interesting to witness someone’s ebb and flow rather than watch someone pretend for the camera and for viewership. At the end of the day, hair grows back, and there is still time for them or anyone to change their CHOICE whenever they want to. The experience alone could even lead to a greater understanding towards life they could not have achieved otherwise.

  106. When will we realize that hair is just HAIR! WHO CARES what people decide to do to their hair! LET THEM LIVE. Geez louise….

  107. This was very interesting to me. I watched African Export’s video when she initially cut her hair and thought back then the viewers comments were overwhelmingly positive. Given that, after reading this article, I had to go and cursorily scroll through the comments. My impressions were the same. Then I thought to look at the video stats. I noticed 8K liked the video and about 1% or 110 disliked it. The video had about 50K views.

I hadn’t previously watched Simply Younique’s video so I proceeded over. Of course now I look at the stats first. Out of 77K views, the stats were 4k liked and less than 10% or <400 disliked. I watched first, then scrolled through the comments again and saw a few negative comments but again the comments were overwhelmingly positive. There were cases where some women were stating even though she was stressed, she could have still dealt with natural hair. I don't think they were at all negative, they were just discussing what she stated.

Would I use the word 'backlash' to describe the overall response? I would describe it as overwhelmingly positive although there were a few naysayers. Anyway, as the sayings go, humans see what they want to see. And, it's all in the mind.

    1. I don’t think the backlash is solely displayed on YouTube. In this video, African Export states that people were commenting about her cut. That means that it was a “hot’ topic before the video aired. I’m assuming that she, and maybe Simply Younique, have debuted their new hairstyles on other social media outlets before addressing it on YouTube. The only reason I would be upset about them not informing anyone about their choice would be to have 10 more minutes of procrastination. lol

    2. Interesting. I thought I’d see a barrage of abuse and hatte but I’ve have looked and found most of the response to be positive. I don’t know why people focus on the negative when there’s so much more positive! But you know, whatever fits the narrative.

    3. “It’s all in the mind”…of site editors looking for article titles that will generate more clicks.

Hey, I ain’t mad…I was writing for the Web not too long ago (for pay…I comment for free, lol) and I’ve been on the Web since the Web was a thing so I know how this game works… 😉

I don’t follow SimplYounique but I have followed AE off and on over the years. I haven’t seen all the videos pertaining to her BC but I agree that the few I did see generated commentary that was overwhelmingly positive. It should go without saying that mature people respect others’ choices even if they don’t agree with them. Sadly the Internet isn’t always the most mature space…

    4. Thank you! I said this before about glamfun. They focus on the few small negative comments and give them more weight than the positive ones.

    5. Thank you for being the voice of reason! Why start a fire where there is none? This site gets enough page views….

  108. I recently decided to relax my leave out to achieve the best look when I wear straighter hair extensions. It took me years to get to that decision and I was really nervous about it.

I did it and it will probably go down as one of the best decisions I made about MY hair.

Now I can go from a natural look (because it is easy to blend my relaxed hair once it is gelled up and tucked under my massive natural curls) to a straight look (with the extensions and relaxed leave out) without worrying.

People’s natural hair journeys evolve and when people know they don’t “have to” do anything and they are wiser about the products that they may use, the journey becomes more free to choose what THEY want without carrying the burden of the social issues.

And seeing the hurtful hair typing debate WITHIN the natural hair community over hair that was considered “nappy” and “non-biracial” just 10 years ago, makes me soooo over it all.

    Do you boo! Do you!

  109. I also did the BC again. It is interesting to watch someone who has experience with natural hair, grow their hair out again.

  110. See, I don’t understand this. I’ve been watching AfricanExport’s videos for a few years now and I’ve loved her tips. She decided that she wanted a change and chopped off her hair and people went crazy. There are folks telling her that she looks masculine now. I don’t see it? And so what if she cut it? It’s hair, she’s a whiz at nurturing it and she will grow it back if she wants too. The only thing that matters to me is that she keeps sharing her videos and her healthy hair tips!

    1. Africanexport’s cut looks amazing! I love the shape and it fits her. I’ve always been afraid to cut my hair short but being natural (long-termed transitioned) I’m more confident and am now considering chopping it all off because in my opinion, long hair gets very boring).

    2. Agreed! Also, I LOVE her new haircut, she really looks fierce and confident with short hair. I’m glad she did what she wanted and cut her OWN hair

  111. Generally speaking, i follow youtubers not because their hair is like mine (why would I expect that? Hair is so diverse, and if I only learned fro hair twins then I’d be a hot mess), but because they have something insightful and knowledgeable to say about THEIR hair experiences. I follow kinky curly TWAs, bone straight pixie cuts, white girls with butt length to ear length curls, relaxed hair, texlaxed hair, 2A-4QQ hair, and loced men, women, and children.
I learn FROM all of their experiences regarding how to treat and style my hair. Simplyounique and AfricanExport’s hair evolution just gave me more kinds of knowledge from a single channel, so if anything I’m grateful for their changes and sharing them with the world.
