Black News Anchor Claps Back in Glorious Fashion After Viewer Insults Her Jewelry

Barbara Ciara of WTKR 3 news in Virginia and North Carolina is not here for petty complaints. The 38-year veteran reporter recently delivered a glorious clap back after a viewer insulted her jewelry, insinuating that it was gaudy. From the viewer;

“All the female reporters and anchors wear litlle [sic] to no jewelry but B Ciara wears the biggest and worst jewelry I have ever seen, please have her play by all same rules as every one else.”

Ciara responded on her professional Facebook page;

This is an email I opened from a gentleman viewer after our broadcast last night typos and all–
“All the female reporters and anchors wear litlle to no jewelry but B Ciara wears the biggest and worst jewelry I have ever seen, please have her play by all same rules as every one else.”

And this is how I replied:

Thank you so much for watching News 3.

I read your email with a great deal of interest. On a day where a multi-million dollar lawsuit was filed against one of our regional jails, A Navy Seal lost his life during training, The Mayor of Suffolk delivered her state of the city address, and an overlooked neighborhood in the East End of Newport News finally gets a grocery store– you noticed my jewelry.

Perhaps you are correct, you are so distracted you didn’t hear a word I said.

Have a blessed day,

YAAAAS!

It is refreshing to see a black woman news anchor so unapologetic, given the pressures they face to toe the line between (sometimes) culturally insensitive audiences who nitpick their appearance, and station bosses who might not have their backs. Last year a black news anchor made headlines for telling a news intern to straighten her natural hair to “please everybody.” And in 2012 25-year news veteran Rhonda Lee who was fired from her station for responding respectfully to a viewer who insulted her natural hair.

What do you think of Ciara’s clap back?

  1. I work in an environment where colleagues’ blatant disrespect for others earns whispers behind doors but no one usually has the balls to tell people where to get off. This age of social media where negative comments reign free never ceases to amaze me. The worst part is that most aren’t even constructive. I wish people would use their fearless voices to make an actual difference in the world. Bigups to the Keke Palmers and B Ciaras of the world who love and respect themselves enough to not be disrespected and most importantly do it in the classiest way possible.
