Introduce yourself!
E: Hello!! I’m Emijaa Jaaemil, a personal style blogger and jewelry designer. I live in Brooklyn, NY. By day I work in a law firm, and I also handcraft costume jewelry aside from personal style blogging.
What is your style philosophy?
E: My style philosophy is I dress for me. Be original. Be confident. Be comfortable and love what you wear. That is when you’re the most sexiest {in my opinion}.
How would you describe your sense of style?
E: I’m most comfortable in a dress and heels, but I love to consider myself a fashion chameleon – I’ll wear anything as long as it goes well with heels… I have no rules – everything goes as long as I look good and feel good!
What is the process of deciding what to wear in the morning?
E: I like to dress according to how I feel. Some days, I want to totally dress up and other days I’m pretty laid back. It really depends on what mood I wake up in. If I had to give a step by step process it would go something like this:
1. Check the weather.
2. Skim through my closet to see if anything catches my eye – if not,
3. I’ll choose a shoe that I want to wear and build my outfit from there.
On most days, I change outfits a few times before finalizing my look – but the deciding factor is – am I comfortable in what I’m wearing?
What are the three favorite things in your closet?
E: I really don’t have favorites… I only make purchases that I absolutely love, but if I had to choose: 1. My tutu 2. My motorcycle jacket 3. My Gap denim jacket.
What are some of your favorite shops/websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
E: I love shopping at thrift stores. Some of my favorites are in Hampton, VA. I love Zara for statement/key pieces (at affordable prices), Old Navy/Gap for basics, Asos and American Apparel, Payless – to name a few. I shop everywhere – if I love it I buy it! Style doesn’t have a label.
How long have you been natural?
E: I have been natural for 3 years.
How and why did you transition into natural hair?
E: I decided to transition my relaxed hair to its natural state in 2010 after reading the blog “The Moptop Maven”. I loved the versatility of natural hair, so in July 2010, I did the big chop. It was my best choice!
What is your signature hairstyle?
E: Wash and Go, although since this feature I have been swearing by two strand twist-outs! My hair seems much more manageable this way…
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
E: My hair styling regimen is simple – I wash and condition/deep condition my hair once a week. I detangle my hair while in the shower using lots of conditioner. Afterwards, I either two strand twist my hair or I’ll apply product for a wash and go. I rotate between the products below.
Shampoos:
Pureology Precious Oil Shampoo
Kinky Curly Come Clean
Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy Ultra Shea Shampoo
Conditioners:
Pureology Precious Oil Softening Conditioner
Trader Joes Tea Tree Tingle
Herbal Essences Hello Hydration
Dove Intensive Repair
Deep Conditioners: Homemade
Styling Products:
Kinky Curly Curling Custard
Eco Styler with Olive Oil or Argan Oil
Taliah Waajid Curl Sealer

I absolutely love your style. I was born and raised in Hampton, VA, can you shine some light as to where you shop here? I always have to go out of state to buy my clothes which sucks. Thanks Ebony.
Hi Ebony,
I love Hampton for thrifting… so many cute spots but unfortunately I don’t really know the area or names – my mom takes me when I visit. I know a few of the thrift stores are on the same road as where the Hampton Coliseum is. Not sure how much help that is… sorry 🙁

I think your style and personality are lovely. In the first picture with the camel coat, near the stairs; can you itemize each item in your ensemble from the jewelery to the shoes and tell me where everything is from and a link (if it isn’t too much trouble).
Thanks-Jane

I LOVE your hair & sense of style!
I have a question — What do you use in your homemade deep conditioners?
Hi MangoMadness,
Thank you for the awesome comments! I love to use plain greek yogurt with olive oil and honey or coconut milk with 1 egg white, olive oil and honey. Those are my two favorite deep conditioners although I have several I rotate.
xx, EJ

SINDY!! You’re awesome – thanks for all of your support here and on my personal blog!! thank you!! xx, EJ
I love NATURAL HAIR!! I have seen more mere mortal black women transformed into GODDESSES on this site. You just don’t get that effect with straightened hair (IMHO).
I love natural hair too… everyone has their own identity… thanks for your comment Candice! xx, EJ
