Amber Rose's Feminist Credentials Questioned After She Clowns Fan Who Was Molested as a Child

Rose on the set of her VH1 talk show

Last night Amber Rose asked fans to share their confessions in a Instagram Live session she did with bestie Blac Chyna. The session was casual — Rose, Chyna and a few other friends drank and laughed as fans called in with wild and funny stories. But the tone changed when a young woman called in to confess being molested by her uncle as a child. Instead of addressing the fan Rose hung up on her, stating that it was “too deep.” Viewers who watched the live stream say Rose and Chyna then laughed.

Following her splits from Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa Rose has rebranded herself a feminist and, through her annual Slut Walk, an advocate of victims of slut shaming and sexual violence. Understandably, fans and critics alike blasted Rose’s callous response.

Rose took to Instagram today to defend herself stating that she hung up because she didn’t believe the caller was serious.

I was on IG live last night with my friends a woman called in and said that she was molested by her uncle when she was 5 years old at the same time laughing with her friend in the background. She obviously wanted A moment on our IG live that’s why I said ” That’s too much” and hung up on her. I’m not gonna deal with people that think its funny or they just want to get a little five minutes of fame on Instagram. It’s really fucked up because I give my life to helping women, rape victims, sexual assault victims and women that have suffered from molestation. Furthermore there were people in that room with me last night that were molested, also SO WAS MY MOTHER! So why would I ever laugh at someone that was molested????

Though videos of the live stream incident haven’t yet surfaced, many are casting doubt on Amber’s story, saying the caller was indeed serious and Rose did laugh after hanging up on her.

Rose went on to blast those who claim her Slut Walk is a ploy for money and exposure.

“All of you so called supporters of mine were never supporters at all, if you were you would’ve known better. Also I’m so sick of people saying that I make all of this money from slut walk. Guess how much I make??? 0 fucking dollars Slut Walk is FREE and I put my blood sweat and tears into it every year. I’ve taken so many punches for all of you!!! From social media, media outlets, people on the street to brands that won’t even work with me because I stand for women and Slut shaming. It’s disappointing that you can devote your life into helping people every single day and one misunderstanding everybody turns their back on you. Stand up and make a change! Ask yourself what are YOU doing for Women’s Rights? Or whatever ur cause is. Know ur facts before you try to erase all the good someone has done. I have an extremely compassionate heart and I will continue to take the punches – Muva”

Unsurprisingly this defense is not going over so well with Rose’s fans who point out that she is doing what men are often accused of — discrediting a sexual assault victim to preserve her own image.

Doubts about the efficacy of Rose’s brand of feminism have been cast for a while. Ratings quickly sank after the summer 2016 debut of her eponymous talk show, which many hoped would delve deeper into issues of womanhood but is essentially pillow talk, with features including “fuck a rapper” tryouts.

While Rose’s embrace of her sexual life is bold, she has not been able to extend her message beyond that. And, judging by her reaction to this call, she might lack the depth to do so.

If Rose is serious about being an advocate for women, she has to do much better than this.

  1. isn’t there a quote that says “when someone shows you who they are believe them” I find that very rarely are people more than they seem and I don’t doubt Amber Levonchuck is exactly who she appears to be and nothing more. The idea that she is the deeply compassionate and capable person with intentions beyond fame, money and beauty is….unlikely

  2. It’s sad if true. We have to remember that rappers, models, and super stars, most aren’t qualified to to answer deep, life-altering questions or discussions. They have their own agenda good or bad and most of the time they are focused on the money, attention, and how to keep the camera/social media on them as long as possible and the money train rolling as long as possible. They may not care as much or equipped to be a friend or trained professional in deeper issues that happen to us. No fans no MONEY.
