Introduce yourself!
A: Aiesha Letman from Queens, NY.
Why did you make the decision to go natural?
A: I’ve been natural for 4 years now. My daughter is almost 4, and I big chopped when I was pregnant out of curiosity of my natural texture. I’d never seen it before that time. My curls had always been altered in some way.
How would you describe your texture?
A: According to hair charts I have type 3 curls. My hair responds really well to gels and defining creams. My strands are also pretty dense and easily rejuvenated.
Describe your styling regimen over the course of the month.
A: I do what I feel is right. I’ve lived in extreme weather conditions and used protective styles, I’ve also forgotten about my hair for days (no products) because maybe I’ve been busy doing other things and my afro has had enough TLC in previous days to maintain. I enjoy my hair in an afro shape, but I think this year I will let it grow down. This will take a lot more styling effort.
What does wash day look like for you?
A: I will use any sulfate free shampoo if I do shampoo, because I don’t often. I like Garnier conditioners and sometimes I use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie for definition. I like applying coconut oil directly to my scalp too.
Describe your favorite go-to hairstyle for days when you don’t have a lot of time to style.
A: 4 straight back braids!
How do you combat shrinkage?
A: I don’t.
What are some of your problem areas (if any) that require special care and attention?
A: I’ve learned not to ever comb my hair while it’s dry. It took discipline, but it was my only downfall.
What are 2 do’s for your texture?
A: Moisturizing and massaging my scalping to stimulate growth.
What are 2 don’ts for your texture?
A: Combing my hair dry and bleaching. DON’T.

I was just about to comment about the clarification of her curls. There was a style icon posted a few days ago who had type 3c/4a curls that mirrored (at least in appearance) my hair exactly. While I’m not a huge typist (?) I found it helpful to better understand the way my hair behaved without manipulation. I was very confused when I saw her hair because while it’s gorgeous, it was very different from how I understood 3c to look. Thanks for some of the clarification.

with all due respect, i believe, due to the size of her curls, that her hair is more 3b than 3c. i’m inclined to say she’s just straight 3b. Love love LOVE that tattoo on her thigh. it’s gorgeous!!!!

It’s so interesting how this 3C and another 3C posted earlier last week have two very different hair textures. Does 3C have subcategories? I thought I was 3C but maybe not. Beautiful hair by the way.
3c is just the size of the curl diameter, not the texture. Alot of people have a misconception that 3c and up are only silky textures. You can be a cottony, silky, thready, or wiry hair texture with a 3c curl size/pattern. For more info on textures look up the lois system.
