a hot mess

like any good and slightly narcissistic blogger, I google my blog’s name occasionally to see who’s saying what about it.

so i googled “black girl with long hair” today and didn’t find much commentary on BGLH — but, let me tell you, the phrase “black girl with long hair” is LOADED.

here are some excerpts from what i found on the Web:

“I mean, a lot of black men’s dream woman is a light skinned black girl with long hair, big boobs, a small waist and a big ass” — in reference to Kim Kardashian

“Being a light complexioned black girl with long hair, as a child I felt that I was superior to my peers because of that.”

“In my area it’s rare to see a black girl with long hair.”

“as i looked out the window there was a choong black girl with long hair and sexy brown eyes, she had da biggest bumpah ive ever seen and her breast were …” (i think i’ll stop it there…)

Hmmm…. I definitely have my own thoughts on this.
But I want to hear yours.

  1. I was cracking up at the guy who had to give a play by play on the chick he saw out the window with the big butt! Men can be so simplistic sometimes. No need for intellect or stimulating conversation. A big butt will do.

As for the light-skinned/dark-skinned thing, I think it depends on the man. But I have noticed (I’m brown) that most of the attention I’ve gotten over the years have been about equally divided between black men and men of other races, especially when I had long locs. Maybe there is something to the long hair thing. But I’ve never limited myself to dating black men anyway, so I wasn’t so affected by what one race of men had to say about me.

  2. Wow! I used to believe that black girls couldn’t have long hair but that changed once I started getting into hair care and seeing alot of black women with long hair. As for the second quote I think that’s a load of bull. I still can’t believe that after all these years this light skinned, dark skinned that is still alive.

  3. Coming from a dark skinned sister, like jenteel said, I am not surprised. It’s been this way for as long as I can remember…and I’m damned near 40!! The amazing thing is most lighter skinned women of color “seem to be” oblivious to this. Why? Maybe one reason is they have never had a guy tell them “you cute ….for a light skinned girl.” Attractive darker skinned women get it all the time…like darker skinned = unattractive. We could go on for days with examples like these. Colorism within our race is bigger than any racism outside our race. How can we expect another race to respect and accept us when most of us don’t even respect and accept ourselves? Me. I’m the shizz no matter what….Just my thoughts 🙂

  4. my brother (not usually one to say sweet & nice things to me) told me this weekend. I really like your hair (natural) it's cool. I prefer that girls have thier own hair.
Note: we are a dark pair.
Nontheless, he gave me hope that there are guys out there who find hair like mine beautiful. He'll be the first to stand up for my dark skin, although he loves to make fun of my occasional pimples! I love him and I'm sure there are other guys out there who would find my features & hair just plain beautiful

  5. I think if a a man prefers a light skinned girl for what ever reason, however superficial let him have her. If he wants a white girl, an Italian, whatever, it is all his choice. We all have our preferences. We all pick and choose and sometimes say things that are not uplifting about what we don’t like. Not all men are alike. My mother’s husband isn’t like that. Many of my male friends are not like that. The love of my life is not like that. But he has his preferences to. He doesn’t like locs, extensions, weaves, or make up. That’s his choice and I choose him. To each their own.

  6. re: anonymous’ comment:

“i have a mixed race friend that looks mostly black and the amount of attention she gets from black men is ridiculous. she has expressed to me in no uncertain terms that she believes that the reason for this is because of her long hair! stupid or what?! the annoying this is, she’s probably right!”

Hey hey hey… “attention” is cheap, and not always sustainable. especially if its based on color/hair prejudice.

  7. Yeah…that’s just the way it is…but not for long…I mean we can change it. I think that the reason why opinions like that have stayed around so long is because we’ve been conditioned to believe that its impossible for us to have long hair that is our own without a whole lot of mixing going on…or if we do its like almost porn status as brought to mind by that third little sidebar thingy you had going on there. Viva la hair revolution!

  8. I wish I could say i’m surprised 2 hear that, but unfortunately I can’t. It’s just another one of those things about the world that annoy me! black men would much rather have a light skinned girl with long hair, which by the way a lot of the times they be weaving it up too! they all seem 2 think that it’s only the light skinned ones that can have “long hair” (which usually means long n bone straight)which I think is ridiculous cuz they wud blatantly choose a light skinned girl over a dark skinned on that may well be much prettier because of the skin tone (no offence or hating intended as I believe that God made us all beautiful) but ya back to my rant. i have a mixed race friend that looks mostly black and the amount of attention she gets from black men is ridiculous. she has expressed to me in no uncertain terms th sathe believes that the reason for this is because of her long hair! stupid or what?! the annoying this is, she’s probably right!

  9. This is no surprise to me…colonization of various indigenous cultures all over the world with deep complexions, allow lighter skin to be the gold standard because that alluded to white blood. And that was the difference between being accepted by white people. Since the colonists were in charge it elevated the status of mixed blood people and also contrasted trememdously with their brethren and sistren who retained their deep complexion. Colorism is present in ALL cultures of color. India, Hispanic Countries, and Africa all have colorism issues. So this socalled “wish” of every black man wishing for light skinned females is no surprise to me. Just shows how deep colonization affects people of color worldwide.

  10. why am i not surprised???!!!
all i can do is laugh at this one
i’m sure there will be fabulous weigh-ins on this one lol!

    another great post l….
