7 Signs Your Hair Products Aren't Working For You

by Daily of Daily Curlz

With so many products to choose from, how do you know that you’re using the right natural hair product? For the most part, choosing the right natural hair product is a try and error type of thing but there are a few points that will narrow the error i.e. hair type, texture, if your hair is color treated, oily, dry etc.

If you want great hair, it’s not enough getting a generic brand made for everybody. You need a hair product specially made for your hair type and the best way to do so is by reading the description on the product. If doesn’t work for you, just try another one. But how do you know that the hair product you’re using is the right one? Here are the 7 signs to help you identify it:

1. Your shampoo leaves your hair feeling like a brillo pad

Shampoos are meant to clean your hair, not leave it dry and rough. If your shampoo is ripping your hair’s natural oils and leaving it impossible to detangle, that is definitely a sign that you are using the wrong hair product.

2. Your styling product is leaving a white flaky residue

There are several different reasons why your product is leaving a flaky white residue on your hair: hard water, your diet, too much alcohol in the product or you are using too much product. Flaky white residue doesn’t always mean that you are using the wrong product and the only way to find out is trying the different solutions.

3. Your curls/coils are not as defined as you would like

This is a no brainer, right? If your styling product is not delivering the results you are looking for, no matter how many curly girls like it, you are using the wrong product. *Please note: If your hair has an undefined z-pattern, or if it naturally loses its curly/coily texture as it dries, this point is not applicable.

4. You are a retouch junkie

After you wash- detangle-seal-style your hair, you shouldn’t have to reapply the product every few hours, not even everyday. Most hair products activate with water, so just spritz your hair with your water mist and you are good to go.

5. You leave a trace in your pillowcase and anybody that gives you a hug

After your hair is dry, it’s not supposed to be dripping oil or products, this happens for two reasons: 1.-you are using the wrong product or 2.- you are using too much product.

6. You need to use a whole bottle of conditioner to detangle your hair, even though your hair isn’t that long

Yes, we have a lot of hair but we do not need to use a whole bottle of conditioner to detangle. If this is the case for you, more than likely you’re using the wrong product.

7. Your hair takes forever to dry

Glycerin based products attract the moisture in the air, so if the humidity in your city is very high, your hair will take forever to dry. This also means you will need to switch your hair products.

Are there any products out there that signified less than desired results on your hair?

  1. If I live in a humid city with harsh winters, should I use glycerin based products during the winter?

  2. The one thing I dislike about my natural hair is finding products that work for me…I’m not a product junkie by any means and I especially hate wasting my money on products that don’t work for me and trying to figure out what to do with them lol

  3. I’ve found number 5 to be a huge problem for me… I can never tell if my hair is truly moisturized or not; when I do my regimen I have nice slip with my hair except for the fact that it is so oily that touching my hair at all just leaves an oily mess on my hair. I wash my hair weekly, spray my hair with a mixture of water and shea butter, detangle with Curls Unleashed 2nd Day Refresher (which isn’t the products intended goal but it works wonders on loosening my curls), then I dip my fingers in a jar of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and rub it along my hair. I finish with Grow and Strengthen Taffy and unrefined shea as my sealant. Maybe I’m using too much product? I have high porosity 4A hair.

  4. 6 and 7 is me. Personally, that is my downside with my hair, I love it but finding products that actually works in my hair is a pain.

  5. Quemet biologics products don’t work for me. Always an oily, greasy, sticky disaster. Part of my head is 4c but perhaps my strands are not coarse enough.

    1. It probably is your strand thickness, because I have mostly fine hair and it did the same thing to me. I haven’t tried the whole Qhemet line, but the Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee made my head crazy greasy. I was sad, because it smelled nice, had a great tingle, and it was moisturizing for my hair…it just gave me a little too much Soul Glo.

    2. QB never absorbed into my hair and didn’t provide any moisture(except the gel)and my hair is coarse maybe you have low porosity hair.

      1. I got my hair analyzed and I have normal porosity, elasticity and strand thickness. Average all the way. My hair doesn’t respond well to castor oil and quemet products contain a lot of that ingredient so that might be it.

  6. I gave up on the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Threw some Extra Virgin Coconut Oil in it and just use it as a pre-cowash. 🙂

There goes my $2 off coupon…lol

  7. The “you’re” in the title should be “your”*….
~ But I am sure that will be fixed 🙂

Number #2 is definitely true for me. As much as I wish I could like the ever so popular Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing smoothie, it literally just coats my strands no matter how many times I’ve tried different techniques to apply it. :-/ I’ve accepted it though, and managed to find major success with other products, such as my homemade shea butter mix. Moral for me with that is: Some hair products truly aren’t for everyone!

  8. Just to let you guys know, the “you’re” in the title should be “your”.
Thanks for another great article though!

  9. I had started using the Pantene Curl defining custard, and the first time I used it, I had with flakes all throughout my beautiful braid out…I was furious and thought about throwing the entire tub in the trash…but I experimented with it a few more times and finally found the perfect way to use it. If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.

  10. Of all the above, I cannot stand products that leave flakes or white/grey residue or overcast. Hint Hint too much Eco Styler Gel or Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Combining these 2 is the worst disaster ever.
