Bright Colors
There’s no denying natural hair has a lot of character. It lends itself to bright, bold color choices. If you’re nervous about experimenting with colors, start with jewel tones. They look amazing on most shades of brown skin. See more looks from Eloise here.

Um… just read some of the posts. Jeez louise. Conservative much. All fashion blogs and magazines always do posts like this. I absolutely adore the family on the front. They are hip- not clownish. I think the SUGGESTION is that natural hair can be freeing, style wise and creatively speaking. No one is saying you better run out and buy a big bow ASAP. Lighten up.
I love that family! I want to be them! Or watch them on a tv show or movie. Lol! So funky, so cute, so creative.
I’m seriously shocked at the negativity on this post. People will always try and take something positive and make it negative or find something negative to say about it. These are creative ideas for the women who look for such things you don’t like don’t sit here being a neg nancy & b about it.Goodness this is ridiculous I loved the post and sure many other women love it and appreciate it as well seriously get over yourselves.
Well Im black and I relax my hair when i want and then if i want it thicker i grow out my perm and it transitions big deal hair is hair i hardly wear my hair anyways i dont want it out in this winter natural smatural hair is hair black ppl need to get over hair like its such a stresseddddd topic in only thissss group do w.e you want w.e best suit you w.e is convenient the end
This post is ridiculous. So if your hair is relaxed or you have a weave good luck wearing bold prints or red lips. get out of here
Great suggestions!
Ladies, ya’ll can wear whatever you darn well please and it will ROCK. Don’t feel limited to those looks above. 🙂
Hey y’all. I get your point that natural hair is not a trend and all, but to the rest of the world it kind of is. Well, not a trend, but it isnt the norm. For that reason it is different and therefore requires some kind of reason behind it. Most often it seems the person that is wearing the natural hair is out to make a statement, either that they are unique or beautiful or bold or proud or something. Most black girls( at least that I know ) don’t just go “hey just I’ll be natural just because” Most do it for a reason or because they just have that kind of personality. Now I am a black teen that wears her hair natural( and its quite large and attention grabbing). I’m not bold or fashionable and I’m not trying to make a statement, but people often look at me like they think I am. Furthermore, the very act of going against the norm – straight hair or weaves – is a statement in itself, I guess. Though I never purposely tried to make a point or difference by wearing my hair natural, I know that I am making a point by wearing my hair this way. especially since I am one of the only naturals at my high school. I’m constantly questioned: why do you wear your hair like that? why don’t you straighten it? sometimes i wanna get all political and what not but i don’t, just to sort of prove that i don’t need a reason to be natural
The African/Ethnic/Bohemian look is really what works now-a-days. Being natural with a ethnic look just goes hand in hand. I can rock turbans, long printed dresses anything with this look
I agree, this post makes it seem like natural hair is some trend or accessory. I think most of the looks presented are “cute”, “fun”, and borderline clownish and certainly not classy or dignified. Why not show beautiful natural hair in a multitude of settings and on a wide range of ages/stages…. Natural hair “goes with” everything, because that’s the way it goes.
I totally agree with you. I will continue to wear what I’ve always worn. Didn’t know I needed a new wardrobe because I wear my hair natural.
Green eyeshadow 😉
Thank You for the Good ideas as my hair continues to grow in health I believe that I would use some of these ideas. Especially the lip stick and color love beautiful bright colors. Thanks Pam
Just coming to this site, lovely pics and being a natural black woman, myself, I appreciate other NBW out there and this site.
I understand what the writer is trying to do here, but seriously? “looks that go with natural hair” you make it sound like natural hair is a trend. it is not, it is simply the hair that grows out of your head, so guess what, it goes with EVERYTHING!
naturals tend to go overboard with the ” look at me, isn’t my hair so pretty like this, etc. ” that’s what makes it easy for others to bash natural ladies, we are constantly looking for validation. your hair is what it is, bold lips, prints, earrings or not, it would still be beautiful!
You are SOOOO right! and they make it seem like every natural is extroverted, out there, and attention seeking… natural hair goes with everything from a beautiful wedding gown…to basketball shorts and a tank… sheesh…
well put!
Yea u r so right..black girls r so used to the weaves and the sew-ins that they and the rest of the world think that ur god given hair is a trend..
Thank you faye but I wouldnt bother some people get DEFENSIVE when they see Lovely Beautiful BLACK Women getting alot of attention here also as well as them selves, unlike the White Mags that only can go ever so shade of mixed race, or very light brown. Some people dont want to share the space with darker females on a regular Basis.look at TV shopping channels promoting shades of make up and saying they have foundation for Black skin, or products for Black womens hair then Wheels on a clearly clearly clearly mixed race woman. Bet theres no DEFENSIVE about that!!! I love this site that wonderfully supports all shades of black and Brown.
Well said and very true 🙂
Wait, so…only girls with shades of brown skin have natural hair? Guess I have to get a relaxer now :-/
PS – light shade mixed girl speaking, so I get defensive when I read things like that. Still, I appreciate your site very much!
You completely missed the point of the post smh There were clearly women with skin from light to dark in the pictures
Lol white people always want to make it all about them
Really, Bella? White people always want to make it all about them? You must have missed the MIXED portion of the comment.
Lovely, stylish family.
so it is okay to wear leggings with open toe and slit sandals ?
How could anyone NOT look good standing next to the fine brother?
Definitely fitted dresses,Bold lips, and bold earrings.
I like the post. I thought I was the only one bugged by the multi-click posts I loooove this site but I travel very often and happen to be tuning in from Haiti. The connection is slow so it takes sooo painfully long for each single photo to load. I hope you’ll consider a one-click format.
Big earrimgs all the way:):)
omg what shall we do? bglh did not include a style in their list trhat we can wear???? I guess I can’t leave the house *shrug*
the article was obvoiusly for ENTERTAINMENT people! please get over it. do you jump off a bridge because someone posts an article showing someone doing it and looking cool at it? no because you know better.
why then act like BGLH is the authority on what to wear and getting in a tizzy because they didn’t include in the list, a style you think you can rock? Some of BGLH’s articles are for fun and entertainment just to peruse in your spare time. Its not an oracle! Saviors can we move on please!!!
I totally agree with this list!
What about us with conservative jobs in the traditional corporate world? What about us who are persuing post graduate degrees and need to make a certain impression.
I’m tired of seeing natural linked to anything bohemian, back in the day when natural hair was the norm, the women did not say hey let me color block or wear huge doorknocker earrings. Just a thought.
You could just style yourself . This is bite size content which I’m not a fan of but I sense it is here for people who just want little bits of information in short, quick articles. BGLH isn’t a fashion blog hence LH=Long Hair.
I’m assuming these are the looks/styles that one would wear on the WEEKENDS or holidays. Do you wear corporate attire on Saturdays – if you’re not going in to work? I personally never assumed these are people (in the photos) were on their way to their corporate jobs.
Stop bringing other issues with this article. I’m assuming that this is also a fashion blog. If you’re a conservative dresser, don’t act surprised when such clothing isn’t shown.
Hence, I liked the article. The looks are quite funky and unique.
Also, the multi-pages weren’t an issue for me. If you’re reading this blog on a mobile phone, you have to realize that there are consequences to doing so (e.g. unable to read articles). Change is good. Staying in a dull box isn’t.
Peace.
+1 I really don’t think the multi-page post is a big deal. SO many other sites do it, I just don’t get why it’s an issue. It’s not like this is being done excessively. I actually like it. I don’t like long form articles (I know, I know, I’m a product of our attention deficit culture), so it’s easier for me to just click through and get the info that way.
Also BGLH left a couple comments saying that only a few of the posts will have it, so what’s the big deal. If you don’t like it, just skip to something else. o_o
jasmine, IT IS A BIG DEAL. Have you read the comments?
That is why we dont read thefrisky bossip madame noire and many of those sites.
Havint to click through makes pages have to load and reload.
I get BGLH want to make $, but if the format is so bad that we dont read, what $ will be made ?
I couldn’t have said it better.
I completely agree. Nice photos, but would you post an article titled “7 Looks That Go Well With Brown Skin”? Or how about “Looks that work for Chinese Women”? Sorry, but I think this article is well meaning but going in the wrong direction. While I could see posting ideas on different ways to STYLE natural hair, saying that certain clothing choices work well with natural hair, you are implying that some don’t. You’re implying that women should be concerned that the natural state of their hair may or may not work well with what they’re wearing. Sorry, but that’s just a big fail to me.
Sorry. This was a reply to Nikkie’s comment above.

BGLH! I dont like this new scroll across system! argh! it’s like Madame Noire! Do you mind switching to the old format? scrolling down?? 🙁
A regular reader x
I love the colourful clothes. You make me remember a photo of a colourful outfit. Sonja Wanda wearing a design of Cora Kemperman:

That looks like its been photoshopped to much .lol…
Can I add that its not a look, but well shaped brows take your natural hair to the next level, it’s something I’ve noticed about naturals…and with the big earrings, red lips and colour… off to get me some red tights…
Agreed! Ladies don’t underestimate the power of a good well shaped brow. It is so simple but give you great results and look even without makeup. but I love the looks. And I agree with the multiple page feedback 🙁
Agreed, but ladies please stay away from the drag queen brow that I am beginning to see on some naturalista’s…

Smh…True Story.
What about hair accessories, like flowers, headbands, and elegant clips? Those work well in different natural styles, such as updos and the like… Natural hair is so fun and versatile!
I think that you can rock any look or clothes style with your hair no matter how young or old the person. Like certain headbands, and even certain eyeglasses actually look better on a person who has become natural because there features are now prounounced more :). Check out this cutie with all of her natural long hair showcasing her dress style … fellow youtuber “LongHairDontCareLLC” this is her daughter.

I love bold colors be it clothes, jewelry, shoes, or makeup. I think it looks wonderful on my darker skin tone and emphasizes how even and smooth my skin is. The key is pairing or combining them effectively.
I think natural hair goes with every style imaginable, but I have found that since going natural, every now and then, I push the envelope even more. I am not scared to be different or stand out.
I like the content of the post. However, I am not understanding the need for an article like this. I mean are there any looks that don’t go well with natural hair? Does the fact that you have natural hair mean you fit into a box in terms of style? Maybe I’m doing to much, but I really don’t see what the texture of your hair has to do with the clothes you wear. So are other styles less becoming with women/girls with natural hair? I like the styles in the post though (most of them I rock or would rock). Maybe it’s the title; the instant I read “…Looks tat Go Well with Natural Hair” I thought “WTH? What look DOESN’T go well with natural hair. Why can’t they just say styles natural girls rock?”
But that’s just my 2 cents…
I think she is just making suggestions about how to coordinate your style with natural hair. This is especially helpful for the newly natural girls who are in a tizzy about how they should modify their look to suit their hair.
But you are right. EVERYTHING looks good with natural hair. I wish she would include suggestions for the more conservative naturalistas, such as myself.
I have to agree with Nikkie. One of the “problems” I have with a lot of hair sites and articles about natural hair is the overwhelming amount of styles that are “funky”/”afrocentric’/”bold.” I feel that it may cause someone who is on a more conservative career path to deem that it is not for them. Natural hair is not a style but simply accepting the texture that grows out of your scalp. Whatever style you want it to take you can. The concentration of articles like this is one of the reasons why so many women ask how am I going to wear my hair for an interview/work/etc.
My personal career path is very conservative and I absolutely think that natural hair coincides with it because it is a medium in which any style can be achieved. It would be nice to see the elegance, softness of natural hair and not just it being loud and bold.
Thanks guys. I’m also very much on the conservative end of the style spectrum; though I can pull a bold print and some red lipstick out of my hat when the occasion calls for it. I think that was one of the issues I have (not just with this article, but when it comes to most style articles related to natural hair). I don’t see the modest, elegant side most often. However, I appreciate both sides (the bold colors, big head bands etc. and the earth tones, shapeless clothing, more traditional, etc.). I just wish the perspective was broadened.
I happen to be more of a bold/ fashion-forward dresser, but to me natural hair goes well with anyone’s personal style. I don’t think new naturals should feel pressure to change their style if that’s not how they would ordinarily present themselves. While the aim of this piece was probably just to highlight looks that the author uses to play up her natural hair, the title “Looks that go well with natural hair” can be construed as encouraging conformity amongst naturals.
Yeah, I’m more conservative in the way that I dress. I also like soft femininity, which I didn’t see. These looks were nice for the women rockin them, but they (I assume) have the personalities and careers to pull such looks off.
+ 1- No matter what one wears natural hair will complement. My style is classic, chic, feminine and conservative and IMO, the natural works no matter what I choose to wear. I wear my hair and clothes, they do not wear me. These ideas are both lovely and fashion forward, but let’s not cheat ourselves into believing certain looks work better than others. Please remember that some of us are not in our 20’s and 30’s.

Thanks for the feedback ladies. We’ve been making changes to both the kind of content we present and the way in which we present it throughout the year. BGLH is a great natural hair resource, but we’re sitting on a lot of information that’s scattered throughout several posts on the site. It’s our goal to begin aggregating our own content and presenting it in a streamlined manner.
The multi-page posts allow us to do this without posting long-form articles on the front page that slow down the site’s loading time.
And although our aggregation posts will take this form our style icon, news & views, video and question of the day posts will all remain single page posts.
Would it not be possible to just have the intro on the home page and when you click the article the whole story show up?
Just an idea.. Love the blog either way.
+1
really despise it. thats why i stay away from thefrisky.com
Ladies, thanks for your feedback. We are definitely listening.
BGLH is in the midst of major changes. We are moving away from a more folksy style of blogging to a streamlined approach. As our audience grows, we are looking to new ways to provide the information in a more clear and concise manner.
Going forward about 30% of our posts will be clickthrough. We have no need or desire to change the format of popular features like style icon or question of the day, which will remain single page posts.
We researched click through posts before implementing and understood there might be some pushback. But we’ve also received great feedback from our Facebook and Twitter fans, and the amount of FB and Twitter shares of our clickthrough posts have gone up since we began.
We’re headed in a new direction and, although it might be uncomfortable for some of our older fans, we hope that you will stick around to see what else we have in store.
This feels like when mainstream magazines buy-in content which is bland and uninteresting but serves a purpose to them (fills space) but not the reader so much. Twitter and Facebook is perfect for the zero attention span, 140 characters all filler crowd but some of us are not in that demographic. Just saying.
I really think that we should stay on topic…who cares about the clicks thelooks and suggestions were great…really we’re talking about clicking a button?? We have become so lazy as humans…geez…
Click-through articles are legitimately awful. I tend to totally ignore them.
yep, echoing the sentiment of the article being nice, but these page clicks are not where it’s at. one of the reasons i loved this blog was it didn’t go down the road of breaking up an article into multiple pages.
hope it doesn’t continue…still am a huge BGLH fan
Cool topic!
I would have to agree with the statement about the page clicks. It does put me off a bit. And I also love your blog. 🙂
I really appreciate all the photos, but I don’t really enjoy clicking through the multiple pages of your recent posts. I realize this increases page clicks but it is inconvenient for the reader… trust me I loooove your blog, it’s my #1 fave. just a bit of user feedback. thanks.
I COMPLETELY AGREE! I know it’s good for click-throughs, but it is pretty inconvenient to reader, especially if reading on a mobile device.
Hmm… I don’t really see the issue. Most news and gossip sites have click through posts. *Shrug* It’s nothing new.
I agree w you on that one.
I agree! I don’t like clicking through either. Each point is really concise, so it can all be included in one post and with the corresponding picture. I’ve always been a fan of bullet point, though 🙂
+1!
Yes, it’s annoying doing 8 page loads when all of it could have fit in one page – especially if your internet is slow!
I was just about to say the exact same thing!!!
+1 it’s annoying.
what a beautiful well dressed family! I really like the term “highly textured” I’m going to use this to describe my hair from now on.
Oh, and the family in the beginning = beautiful.
I completely agree with all of these. But I don’t think we should do all of them at once!
